[GTA3] Crashing after modifying LC

Recommended Posts

DKMR

Playing on version 1.1 (Steam), game crashes after adding 2 or more objects into the world.

The same thing happens if I edit the pre-existing .ipl files or if I use my own .ipl.

I'm trying to build a road using ID 1119(rd_Road2A50). Placing just one instance is fine, but placing another one causes the game to crash during the loading screen. This happens with a lot of objects, I've maybe encountered 1-2 objects that I was able to place in multiple instances without crashing. Those objects don't overlap and don't have rotation applied. Here's my ipl:

inst
1119, rd_Road2A50, -280.004, 457.448, 87.522, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1
1119, rd_Road2A50, -280.004, 507.448, 87.522, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1
end

Tried using a different object in this case:

inst
1119, rd_Road2A50, -280.004, 457.448, 87.522, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1
1120, rd_Road1A50, -280.004, 507.448, 87.522, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1
end

Crash...

I'm frustrated with this issue and it's been holding me back for a couple of days, I can't force myself to do the map editing first because if it's gonna crash always, what's the point...

Anybody got any (and I mean any) ideas what's causing this?

Figured it out - roads have path data for peds and cars in their IDE files. I was surprised to see peds walking on the sidewalks when a road piece was placed. For some reason, placing one road instance is okay, but if you add more the game will crash.

The solution was simple, extract road models from gta3.img, rename and import them back in the archive (<- this step might not be required, but just in case...), export the collision model from the original and rename it to be the same as your renamed road object and place it in your .col file in data/maps/x.

Also, give your new object a fresh ID and voila, you have the ability to place multiple road instances.

P.S. from info gathered, seems like this is only an issue with GTA 3 as it's the only game to have ped and car paths stored in the .IDE file.
