Saint Denis

It hasn't got the scale of some of the other great video game cities but in terms of detail, atmosphere and just the general feeling of life, yea, definitely for me. I love how well put together it is, foot chases through the city flow really well because of the alleys and passages that link up and flow into each other perfectly.

It amazed me the first time I saw it. A cowboy in a big city? Oh man.

Nope. It's too small to be concerned for that title. Personally,  New Bordeaux from Mafia 3 is my top video game city ever. Although,  Assassin Creed series did have many interesting cities.

I have to be honest and admit that I never played any of the Witcher games. I had to google it lol  :D

idk how yall can call it great already, theres not much going on there imho. saint denis is my fav city in the game and where i spend most of my time but its not that much to do there. sure its very aesthetically pleasing but its also really small. id wish they gave the small gangs more of a presence there

It felt really out of tone the first time I entered it. But now I like it. Escpecially when getting chased on foot by cops while escaping through the alleys.

For me definitely. Obviously it's not the biggest, but it feels big. Feels authentic. Feels like a city in 1899 should. Nothing about it feels generic. Ite fantastic.

I dunno, there's still not enough to do there for me.

I actually found the size of it quite off-putting as well.  I'd spend all of the game before then with Arthur never running at all (aside from occasionaly needing to during missions), and yet him walking so slow meant Saint Denis was a chore to walk through at times.

I still want Rockstar to make a GTA/Red Dead game where almost all interiors are enterable and have something going on.  It gets a bit annoying walking through a town and seeing dozens of buildings that look and sound cool but you can't do anything with them other than just look at.

St. Denis is a city best explored in first person view at a slow pace.
All the details like store signs, advertising posters, all the clutter and the small details is amazing.
Best city rendered ever in a Rockstar game...

Even the street names are tiled in the intersections if you look down...

Bayou Nwa and Saint Denis were totally unexpected for me, and they add extra variety to the game. Although, it does somewhat make Red Dead Redemption 2 feel a bit like it's to the Western genre as Mafia 3 is to the mafia genre. Granted, it's not THAT far "removed," and Red Dead Redemption 2 is the superior game of the two, but I hope people understand what I'm saying.

GTA IV's Liberty City (and Alderney) is still the best R* city, in my opinion, but that should be expected when an urban environment is the sole focus of that game. I'd say R* did a great job with the area in Red Dead Redemption 2 otherwise.

It is stunning, can't argue that. Beautiful.

I do prefer to slightly further north or east myself mind. (The swamp/Rhodes).

Liberty City for top spot though. :)

Wonderful place...beautifully crafted, diverse, atmospheric. If we can buy properties there in RDRO, I won't hesitate (as well somewhere out in the sticks).

Certainly the best in terms of how well the NPCs act and how REAL Everything is . I don't like the overall map in IV because it lacks a countryside but I think the City itself is phenomenal. I still think Liberty City from IV is unbeaten based on it's scale. But I have a strong feeling that the next GTA is gonna beat that based on what I'm seeing in Saint Denis. Los Santos is great as well in terms of how varied the city is in different areas. Saint Denis is definitely a great example of how a city should be done. Hopefully this can be done in a larger scale in future games.

St Denis is the best city for me. When i'm in the middle of that place i feel like the countryside doesn't exist. I love the sound of how busy it is too. Tram's ringing the bell telling folk to move. The constant sound of horses and stagecoaches on the tiles. The church bells, NPCs talking, just how populated it is. Hell even the thick smoke that sometimes floats above the city.

Some parts look like edinburgh. Some of the old looking buildings. I know it's inspired by New Orleans though. They REALLY nailed it.

I'd probably like it more if the Arthur himself weren't repulsed by the place.

Love how he says "civilization" like it leaves an unpleasant taste in his mouth just to say the word

As soon as we entered Saint Denis in RDR2, I could tell it was amazingly rich and dense and alive, seamless, organic, an incredible virtual creation.

I lived for a time in a US midwest rustbelt former industrial town, and the place was and is still a time capsule of those old dark brick multistory industrial buildings with the smokestacks and grids of windows, built in the early 1900s, and sometimes even back to the time of RDR2.  There are also typically tall concrete grain elevators from the same era, since the cities are surrounded by farmland.  Like you say about Edinburgh, these old cities have the sense and feel that was captured in Saint Denis.  Indeed, they nailed it.

It is a great city.... but also a pretty empty one.

Novigrad, Beauclair... the Witcher cities are better candidates for the top spot imho.

Meh the Witcher cities are good but there's something about the way R* do cities that makes it somewhat different and more alive. I don't know what it is though.

:/  Not even the best city in that game. Fun to drive in, but that city is like 16 square blocks and completely vacant of anything interesting to do.
