Split Point Ammo: Why don't you use it? (How to Craft while on Horseback)

Recommended Posts

Psyperactive81

G'day Fellow Outlaws:

I am currently away from home and unable to play RDR2 right now, so I have been torturing myself by watching gameplay videos of epic fails and funny moments, as well as surfing these forums.

Something I have noticed more and more often in the videos I watch is the fact that I see people using regular ammo instead of split point ammo (not EVERYONE mind you, but more often than not)

Now, I understand that making split point ammo takes some time and seems like a monotonous task when camping, but I don't think everybody is aware of the fact that you can craft split point ammo (and any other kind of upgraded ammo) while riding your horse (at walking speed of course).

This way, you get to enjoy the scenery and make way to wherever you are going, and it doesn't really take that long to fill your reserves. (I haven't finished upgrading all my gear but I think I can Max out at 200 split point repeater ammo) which allows you to pick up more regular ammo for later.

The main benefit of Split Point Ammo is that it increases the damage dealt (a little) while reducing the speed at which Dead Eye is consumed (a little).

Just in case you don't know how to craft while on horse back, Open your Item wheel while on your horse and then go to the option to set up Camp, and press LT or RT to select Crafting.

You can basically craft anything that does not require a fire, and this will help save some time.

Nothing says you are an Outlaw as much as slicing your bullets with your knife while moseying on down the road on your horse. 😎

Edit: So, just to summarize what has been discussed below:

Split Point Ammo is apparently the only type of ammo that reduces Dead Eye Consumption as well as a slight damage buff which can be beneficial to Players who are still leveling up their Dead Eye level, or when going into a Hairy situation

Express Ammo, although expensive, becomes the go-to ammo due to the increased damage buff, but Dead Eye Consumption remains the same.

High Velocity ammo is good for those long range shots as it increases the range, but no change to damage or Dead Eye consumption.

Apparently none of these will alter the condition of animal pelts if you get a clean kill on the first shot; logically if a second shot is required, then no matter what ammo you use the condition of the pelt will be reduced.

I hope this helps New Players with choosing the proper ammo for the situation at hand.

I do use it in combination with other ammo types.

I used it in chapter 2. Then I got enough money and bought express and high velocity and never crafted split point again. Just seems redundant now.

I have a fair bit of split point ammo for the revolvers. For some reason my ammo keeps switching back to regular by default though, so I end up not using them. Might be the same for the people in the videos you're watching?

Crafting while you're on the road is so much fun... I've gone AWOL from the camp a few times now and Bill has come looking for me. 😄

I used it for a bit, then got some money. Now its mainly Express, and High Velocity maxed out most of the time.

Gives a bit more damage than standard bullets and drain dead eye a bit less than standard bullets 😃.

I do indeed. I like the crafting aspects quite a lot, enjoy having a full arsenal too, though there's much I just have as reserves to need less visits to shops and crafting for long spells regularly. And some extra XP always helps early on to get my cores up. :)

Out of curiosity:

Does Express Ammo have the same effect as Split Point or is does it deal even more damage / consume less Dead Eye?

I also wonder about using Express Ammo for hunting; does it reduce the quality of the pelts, or does it remain the same? (for instance, game that require a repeater for a clean kill)

Express have higher damage than split point, from what I know only split point use less Dead Eye.

Yeah that happened to me too, started to get a bit annoying after a bit.

That could be a good explanation

ahhh, see that for me is the main advantage I found while using Split point to fight of the Bounty Hunters.

One of the most irritating things this game does.  For some reason it randomly keeps switching your weapons and ammo and if you want to use special ammo , you are pretty much forced to reload at the beginning of fight even though you already did that earlier.

Oh wow, didn't know about horseback crafting, nice tip! Though split point still doesn't seem worth the effort tbqh...

If I’m going into something hairy, where I know I’ll need a lot of dead eye, then I’ll definitely be using split ammo.

If it’s just a random encounter that will only require one or two shots, then I’ll use regular ammo and save myself a few seconds crafting time later on.

If I’ve run out of split ammo (pretty easy to go through dozens of bullets in a single fight with semi auto pistols) I’ll use express ammo.

I’ve never been in a position where I’ve needed the extra range of high velocity ammo over the extra damage of express ammo.

Yes, I don't understand why is this happening... Why I have to change ammo type every time I switch guns? I am fairly used to it and doing it almost automatically but it's still annoying. But I found out that if you change your guns while on horse and draw them out (or keep them holstered but leave weapon wheel), than change ammo, you will have to reload. When you change guns and the ammo at the same time (in one weapon wheel visit) you will have selected ammo type already loaded.

To the topic - first off, didn't know until now that split point bullets drain less dead eye until now, so I didn't really saw the point.

Even now I don't think I will use them, I have over  $3000 and I have almost always full of Express and high velocity ammo, 400 of each so I don't really need another 400 of splitpoints... :)

I do use it from time to time but mostly for hunting purposes because its accuracy is so much higher than standard ammo, and that is the key to getting that "clean kill".

The types I personally think are most useful in gun fights are express and explosive.

...Oh and the slugs for the shotguns

Because it's a waste of time.

For a clean kill, you only need the right weapon. One shot in the right spot. Regular ammo works just fine.

True but I disagree when it comes to long distances

When you are pulling off a really, really long shot, it makes a difference.

I always use split point, although I don’t use deadeye on this playthrough (unless forced).

I never had to take such a long shot. Guess I could try, but I prefer to get closer, silently.

Split point is a complete waste of time after chapter 2. You get more than enough money to only buy express ammo (don't even need to go to the gunsmiths, just order it from the app) which is way more powerful and you should be stacked with chewing tobacco if you've been looting your foes.

Express has the highest damage, high velocity the highest range. If you kill a deer with clean shot using a rifle, the ammo doesn't matter from my experience

Ninja'd by Leon while typing this, but if you can get a clean kill with Regular Rifle Ammo, you're usually good to step up to Split Point Ammo, High Velocity Rifle Ammo, or Express Rifle Ammo. Explosive Rifle Ammo should be avoided for obvious reasons, outside of hunting legendary animals.

If anything, stepping up to a more powerful load will sometimes actually guarantee you a better chance for a perfect pelt. On some large animals, a vital shot, especially at range, may not always kill. If you have to shoot twice, it may severely compromise the quality of the pelt. Besides which, Express Ammo from a rifle is also a good way to say "F*** you!" to bounty hunters.

lol oh no doubt, but every once and a while something startled an animal I was after and it was more of a test to see just how far I could let it run before taking the shot.

I also take shots like that when up in the snow just because they are visible from long distances.

I've found it also comes in handy when I have a bounty and snipe the hunters before they even know what hit them lol.

Nothing shows them how ill-prepared they really are coming after me like a hole in the head, although it doesn't stop them from trying.

I hope that app isn't for buying ammo for online, griefers are just gonna camp like in GTA:O and that stupid idea to allow us to buy through the inventory.

Closer we get, more sh*t looks inevitable. Really am hoping this game is better than what GTA:O became.

All they need are friendly lobbies like RDR1 and then I won't care what grinding/griefing nonsense they inevitably add to it.

Very true indeed. Though I'm cautious until we know, I'm remaining as positive as possible really. Probably just getting itchy fingers as I'm keen now, lol.
