The most underdeveloped character of the GTA series

Recommended Posts

muvdafucupouttahere

Which character of the GTA series do you think is underdeveloped?

For me, the most underdeveloped character of the series would have to be either 8-Ball from GTA LCS/GTA III or Ryder from GTA SA. The former doesn't really have much of a role in either of the two games he's in, and even then, his missions are somewhat irrelevant to the major plot, and the latter is unceremoniously killed off just halfway through the storyline after his improvised betrayal.

Stretch and Wei Cheng. The sad thing is even some of the characters who never appear in GTA IV and only appear as profiles on the LCPD database have a better sense of characterisation than these two chumps. It makes things worse considering the fact they're bloody....

Underrated characters from each game:

GTA 3: Luigi Goterelli

VC: Kent Paul

SA: Ryder

VCS: Jerry Martinez

LCS: Vinchenzo Cilli

IV: Manny Escuela

V: Stretch

And somewhat Devin Weston, only true developed antagonists of GTA V was Steve Haines.

Is sad that you didnt care about your enemies in game.Thats I call bad writing...

Underdeveloped: probably Toni from LCS:

I really wish the game told more about his backstory

We already got to know about his relationship with his mother and Sal, and we learned he killed a maid man in LC just four years prior to the story. What more has to be known about him?

I didn't hear much more from Luigi after Salvatore's death. I figured he just hightailed out afterwards.

Stretch and Wei Cheng from GTA V. Even the Jewish and Albanian mobsters from GTA IV/EFLC have more characterization, are more memorable, and are better fitting for main antagonists than these two lackeys.

Agreed, Devin Weston seemed like a poor copy of Steve Haines without some of the charm. Steve Haines wasn't that good compared to the other main antagonists like Dimitri and Tenpenny but still a solid character at least, unlike GTA V's other antagonists which were crap

In my opinion, that'd be 8 Ball from GTA III. He's featured in a lot of artworks and promotional media for the game, so it's weird how he got so little screen time, only appearing in the prologue and the mission that everybody hates for some reason. I think it would've been better if he was Claude's pal during the entire game or at least featured in more scenes.

Ryder, it would have been cool to have more missions with him developing about his background and things he did before CJ came back in Los Santos.

Here's my list

El Burro: He doesn't appear much outside of phone calls.

8 Ball (GTA 3/LCS): He was a great ally who didn't get to develop more in neither the original nor its prequel.

Mercedes (GTA VC): She seems more of a SLI and hardly has much of a personality up her sleeve

Ryder (GTA SA): Needs no explanation.

B-Dup (GTA SA): It would've been much more interesting to know his experience with the GSF and have him give out missions in LS...or probably take Ryder's place as the traitor of the gang.

Big Bear (GTA SA): Considering what happened to him with the crack, they've really should've shown how he would rehabilitate himself and how he would get back on his feet.

Floyd (GTA 5): The guy is just killed off instantly in the second act.

I don't really get what Stretch did that would make him a central antagonist. Sure he sided with the Ballas but for most of the game he was non existent. There seemed to a lot more to the story that wasn't told. Stretch should've had a bigger role to him than just being a whiny ballas spy.

Stretch is such a boring antagonist it actually hurts. It's bc r*'s focus was all over the place with 3 characters.

Kenny Petrovic comes to mind. He never actually appears in GTA IV's story yet he's the main catalyst for the events that lead Dimitri to stab Niko in the back.

Franklin and it's not even close. Apart from the "good" ending, both the endings to V place him firmly as an antagonist, betraying and killing those closest to him. It's even alluded to throughout the game, considering a lot of the things Lamar says. Yet despite this characterisation, Franklin is never actually shown to be a bad guy. He's apologetic, he's void of much character, and despite being capable of stabbing people in the back he doesn't seem to have much ambition or passion.

The character-switching mechanic could have been an amazing way to reveal him as an antagonist. Allowing us to see his thoughts and dealings, painting his relationship with Michael and Trevor in a completely different light. But all we got was a bland nothing of a character, whose sole personality trait seems to be rolling his eyes at everyone around him.

Honestly, he was the biggest missed opportunity in that whole game.

8-ball has always been at the back of my mind. I always wondered what he's up to, but it was never really revealed.

And then as @Typhussaid - Franklin is an empty shell. I even forgot about him, until I saw the above message!

CJ. Possibly the emptiest character in the series even including side characters. Even minor side characters generally have a personality and some sort of nice to fill. CJ kind of fails at having any of this. The general weakness of CJ as a character goes back to what is basically the core flaw of San Andreas. They took an everything but the kitchen sink approach to the game and  threw in anything and everything with no regard to quality, consistency, or cohesion. They didn't develop a strong character and then surround him with an environment, characters, abilities, missions, etc that made sense for that character ala Niko in IV. Instead they needed a character who fit all the random bullsh*t they decided to include in the game. CJ had to be a character who could wear a wife beater and jeans, sports gear, leisure clothes, leather, tuxedos. A jheri curl or afro as well as a hot pink mohawk. Had to roll through the hood on a BMX then steal a jet fighter and get into dogfights. Help a group of Triad open a casino then break into a military base, steal a jetpack, and use it to steal alien goo. CJ essentially had to be a total blank slate out of necessity, because all these wildly clashing things would make no sense on a strongly defined character.

Even Claude had more personality than CJ. Considering Claude never spoke a single word, that's saying something. CJ never shut his mouth but never had anything of worth to say. When I see people say CJ is their favorite character I have to chuckle a little because he's barely a character at all.

Ryder by far is the most underdeveloped character of the series. The guy starts off as a GSF gang member and all of a sudden betrays the gang without a reason, no motivation, no foreshadowing, and everyone just ignores him completely. His betrayal just felt so improvised that it kinda felt as if Rockstar said "You know what? We don't know what to do with this guy! It's not like anyone else even remembers him! Just turn him into a traitor! We have to get rid of him somehow!" Hell even when it's time to kill him, his death scene is dull as hell, and his lines are just recycled from his ped quotes. I'm not saying that people should cry over his demise, but you would think that Sweet, said to be one of Ryder's closest friends, would at the very least ask about his whereabouts. Waste of who could've been a good character.

%70 of gta V’s characters.

and of course: franklin

edit: just saw bill’s post and yeah, big bear obviously. we saw the guy in two missions but it seems he could have a lot more because of his past with the gangs.

i think that's pretty much what rockstar intentionally had in mind for CJ tbh, he's essentially supposed to be the player avatar type of character, and that's not really a bad thing. i mean the biggest element of SA was its gameplay, which takes precedence over story so i dont see how an "empty" character would detract from that experience.

they tried working on this in V, and it didnt really work that well imo

I wish he appeared in LCS so that we could see more of his relationships with Toni and Sal. Would also have fleshed out the Leone family a bit more
