What's a good starting vehicle besides the Elegy?

Well if by chance you are a returning player, the Duke'O'Death is actually an even better starting car. Fast, armored and with good protection against bullets, it's a great workhorse for the starting criminal in Los Santos  It's also a free car for returning players.

 

If that's not the case, then I don't think that there's a better choice than the free Elegy. It's fast, it's great around corners and with some armor and bulletproof tires it can take a good beating, making it useful for early missions.

Sentinel XS or Sandking XL. You can use either one to spawn & sell custom npc vehicles.

If you're looking for solid performance outside of sports cars, the Stratum and Stanier, both in the Sedans class, are capable. In SUVs, there's no going wrong with the Dubsta. And if you are looking for power, the Muscles class has the Ruiner, and the Sports class offers the Sultan. All of these are common on the road and can be stored in a garage right off the street.

OT - The Premier could be a good car to start off with. It's cheap, fast, nimble, and there's upgrades a plenty for it.

Interestingly, that was my very first car Got it a while before I could finally get my first garage and Elegy, and it served me well for lots of Contact Missions and getting around in free roam. I still remember it, matte black with orange accents... I sold it long ago while needing to raise money, a choice that I ever since regret

Zion (especially if you want to upgrade on Simeon's dime and sell it later -- lots of options at LSC). Fast, stable, good handling. 

 

Stanier, as Willy A. Jeep mentioned, but Washington and Primo have almost identical performance and handling (more upgrades for Primo, though, and it's narrower, offers a spoiler for improved traction, and has truly beautiful taillights). I went with Washington, but they're so close, you may as well choose whichever one looks best to you out of these three sedans. 

 

Sanchez. Uglier than a bald dog, but agile and fast. 

 

Dominator. 'Cuz Dominator. 

 

Dubsta. Competent, seats 4, handy to climb on top of to get on buildings or use as cover, and can be used in SUV and Off-Road races.

I dont know but i love the buckets with good handling. I find that a car with a great swing that u can mavouver fast enough turns to outrun cops, but still make the sharp turns. So i love to start with the primo. 4 seats, and i love the old school scraper buick look, cruising through the ghetto.

I would imagine the OP has chosen one by now but a much underrated vehicle is the Schyster Fusilade.

I suggest f620, it is a neat coupé car, fast and look good i believe this is an excellent choice for starters.

Other one probably the stainer, very easy to control and a good 4 door car - as for look? Well if you like american sedans then you might like it.

Sultan is amazingly cheap and fast. Plus it looks nice.

Karin Futo is a good choice, too. Especially since you can buy it outright now instead of stealing one off the street. Makes a nice budget entry-level drifter to rip around in - even for long road trips across the map. Dirt cheap, fast acceleration, responsive handling and good customization is available.
