elliotrodger
Because I've never seen one before. Today, I recieved a sealed boxed GTA 2, and I opened it, except it wasn't in a big box, it was in a jewel case sized box. I thought it was gonna be a big box, hence why I paid like $19 for it, but I realized something, I've never seen an American big box of this game, and even the American box scans I've seen are only the jewel case sized boxes. So does there exist a big box version that was released in America? I'll feel bummed if I actually opened a sealed boxed first ed. GTA 2.
totyak
There is an USA big box edition but I think it's rare. https://gamesfoundhere.com/products/grand-theft-auto-ii-pc-1999-big-retro-box
jm-9
It seems to be extremely rare from what I have seen, but it does exist. The site that totyak linked to above is the only place I've seen it online. A few years ago I did manage to get the contents of the box (but not the box itself). The maps from this release are easily the best GTA 2 maps available. They're far bigger than the PS1 maps and European PC maps. You have to squint to properly see the others in places, and the European maps aren't as clear in some places, particularly the residential district (the European and US maps are drawn slightly different from each other). If you can't get this release, I'd recommend getting both the European PC release and the US PS1 release for the maps. If in doubt as to the version of US PC GTA 2 for sale, the GTA 2 logo on the disc from this release is shiny.

By the way I saw 3 different American big boxes. The 1st is the one with "FREE PAGER OFFER" in the right top corner. The 2nd is the one with small "Mature M ESRB" logo and DMA Design logo in the middle. The 3rd is the one with normal "Mature M ESRB" logo and this time both, the R* and DMA Design logo are on the right side of the cover. I don't know how else they differ and I don't know which is the first/original one. Edit: I forgot to say that for some reason the 1st American Big Box I mentioned, doesn't have the "Mature M ESRB" logo on the front cover, however the logo is on the back cover unlike the other big boxes had it on front cover, and it also seems to be the old ESRB logo, because the M letter is white instead of black. So maybe the American big box with "FREE PAGER OFFER" in the right top corner is the first/original one? What do you think guys? Okay, this is what I can confirm. The 3rd picture was released in 2002. The 2nd picture was released in 1999. The 1st picture is hard to tell. The only way you can confirm for sure is to compare both bar codes. See if there's a difference in numbers and look it up. It will tell the date of when the game was released. Update: The 1st picture with the pager logo on it has the same exact numerical bar code as the 2nd picture without the pager logo. I honestly don't know which one came first but to be honest, I think the one with the free pager has more value in my eyes than the one without the pager because it's an extra feature. I'm still curious which one came out first though... Edited September 18, 2022 by Adrian51399
