Write your own RDR2 alternative ending (SPOILERS)

Recommended Posts

Jimmy Darmody

After 3 weeks i finnally finnished the game and i gotta say i loved the story behind it, however there are a few things that put me off.

1. The fact that Arthur dies and you end up playing as John is too obvious for a story like this. When half of the fanbase already "knew" what was gonna happen that is a turn off imho.

2. For the relevance that Williamson and Javier Escuela had in the first game, they felt almost absent. You play a dozen of missions with Williamson by your side and that's it, we never get to know him as a character. Even less so for Javier.

3. The story never brought us to Mexico/New Austin.

4. Dutch showing up at the end feels sloppy, confusing and is incongruent with RDR1 where John was surprised to find out Dutch was alive.

Here how the story should have ended for me.

Chapter 6
1. After John gets shot at the train robbery we would have never seen him again for the remaining of the game.
2. After saving Abigail and Sadie, and sending them to aid John, Arthur would confront Dutch at the camp, just like in the game. The Pinkertons would raid the camp. Javier, Bill, Charles, Micah's men would hold them off, while Dutch and Micah run INTO THE CAVE to get the money. Arthur would follow them. The iconic fistfight between Arthur and Micah would happen INSIDE THE CAVE as Dutch looks for the money.
3. As Arthur loses the fight, Dutch shows up. Arthur begs Dutch to shoot Micah because he's a snitch, just like in the game. Instead of confusingly walking away, Dutch would reply "I know he's a rat Arthur. I always knew. And it's all the same to me. The gang has been nothing but a bunch of pawns for me,that i could use to make me rich. You fool."
4. There would be a stand off between Micah and Dutch, 2 selfish psychopaths fighting for the money. Micah would miss his shot, while Dutch would hit Micah in the leg and flee off the cave with the money.
5. Micah's boys would show up, take Micah and chase Dutch. Javier, Charles and WIlliamson, would show up and take Arthur, and chase after Micah and Dutch.

6. As Dutch is crossing a small river near the cave, CLEET (Micahs boy) SHOOTS AND HITS DUTCH who falls in the water with the money and both go down the stream!!! Then a small cutscene would play showing the INDIANS WE HELPED FINDING AND SAVING DUTCH IN THE RIVER'S SHORE (And that's why Dutch end's up ruling over a gang of natives in RDR1).
7. Arthur passes out.

Chapter 7
1. Arthur wakes up in in a moving wagon in MEXICO with Javier, Bill and Charles.

2. Javier tells Arthur they were there because they need a warm and dry envrionment for slow progression of Arthur's disease while needing to flee the US from authorities.
3. Javier and Bill are mad that Dutch and Micah betrayed them, becomes paranoid and does't know who to trust anymore.

4. Javier, Bill, Charles and Arthur kill the Del Lobos gang leader, but in a PLOT TWIST Javier becomes the leader of the Del Lobos and starts terrorizing Mexico.

5. Javier, crazier than ever, decides to raid the whole town of Armadillo as retribution for the government being on their tail since Blackwater.
6. The government sends a Punitive Expedition of Pinkertons and Army men to catch Javier.
7. At some point, Javier and Bill KILL CHARLES... because paranoia (and because Bill is racist af).
8. Bill decides that it would be harder for authorities to catch him and Javier if they seperated into 2 different gangs and leaves to Fort Mercer.

9. Javier is bipolar and confused. He loves Arthur and wants to be loyal to him but at the same time thinks he cant trust him. ARTHUR IS HELD HOSTAGE BY JAVIER'S GANG.
10. FINAL MISSION: An epic chase through Mexico where Arthur, aided by Monroe, is trying to flee both Javier and the Pinkertons, to catch a BOAT TO AUSTRALIA, where he can live comfortably. Arthur ends up falling into an ABYSS but the BODY IS NEVER FOUND, LEADING YOU TO THINK HE MAY HAVE FAKED HIS DEATH.

Epilogue.

1. Jack Marston arrives Darwin, Australia, 1918. He tells a Lady that he's writing an Old West Romance called "Red Dead" but based on HIS MEMOIRS  and is trying to interview people from his past for inspiration. Then asks the lady if she knows someone named Tacitus Kilgmore. Lady says "No". Jack then asks if she knows someone named "Arthur Morgan". Lady looks at Jack suggestively. THE END.

After this, we would play the "post-game" as Sadie Adler.

John's story would be a 30+ hours DLC.

What you think?

Arthur never gets TB, not needed. Arthur, Adler and John hunt down Micah and go their separate ways. Free roam as Arthur.

I'm not gonna flesh it out so much as you did, but

Arthur lives. He rides west in to the sunset after skinning Micah alive somewhere in Tall Trees. Sadie dies during the fighting.

Epilogue

After a cinematic ride west combined with the credits, we join up with Arthur somewhere in New Austin. John and his bitch wife are nowhere to be seen. Freeroam galore.

Everything is pretty much the same except Sadie and Charles are left down the mountain and Sadie never comes up to assist John. Micah and John are the only ones up there and Dutch is not present. They have a standoff and John kills him by firing all his bullets. Micah falls to the ground the same way as he dies in the game.

John looks at his revolver thinking about what he has just done. Starts to pace backwards before finally turning around. Boom. The whole screen turns red with John's face to the right. RED DEAD REDEMPTION II appears in big letters. The same sound cue at the end of RDR1 plays mirroring the end of RDR1 when Jack kills Ross and Red Dead Redemption appears. Credits Roll. It makes sense considering both acts are committed when someone in this case Arthur tried his very best to help John get out of the life but got put the pinkertons back on his trail because of this. For Jack I hope he managed to get away with it though and I think he did. Kind of slightly off topic but I hope that is never continued. I would rather it not be continued than be messed up later.

Anything with one exception: Arthur does not die and you are still playing with him after the story.

If I had a gun pointed at my family and my only condition was to keep Arthur with TB, I'd make Micah catch it during their fight. After Arthur dies, you begin playing as Dutch who has to put up with a sick sidekick. At any point, you are allowed to off him to protect yourself.

Want him to look at some flowers? Put a bullet in the back of his head. Tell him you want to go fishing, then leave him in the middle of the lake.

Or leave him behind in a small robbery. Let the hangman catch him. When the hangman catches you, you don't get a bullet. When the hangman catches you, ya hang.

Just finished this weekend and the end irritated me. I knew Arthur was going to die people spoiling it online all over the place, but I thought they would somehow still allow me to freeroam as him when the game finished maybe flashing back to a certain point? I don't know. But I was still very disappointed that I had to basically start over as John. I was really salty at first, but I've made a story in my head that John is the protégé of Arthur and is now the new badass in town. It's not so bad now I've finished the epilogue but I think it was really unnecessary to kill him off. Those stupid ranch missions really hurt after being so invested in Arthur, I still had a bunch of things I wanted to do with him. Oh well, waiting for RDR Online now I guess but I'm still playing. Hunting for the rare horse breeds, legendary animals etc. Also, where can I find high stakes poker games?

My alt. ending:

Arthur kills Micah and Dutch gets defensive not sure whether to trust Arthur as his trust has been waivering any how. Arthur and Dutch get into physical battle where Arthur gets the upper hand and player gets to decide whether to kill off Dutch or not. If you kill Dutch you can get his stash of money. If you let him live, you have extra missions in the epilogue or he gives you a special item maybe a rare horse.

Arthur does not get tuberculosis. Dutch lets him pick up the gun in the fight vs Micah, Micah gets killed. Dutch leaves, Arthur passes out facing the sunset. Same epilogue untill you find Charles and discover he went back for Arthur and that he is most likely alive. They find him in New Austin and at this point you can play as John and Arthur. - Not really a great story but would be more satisfying to me

Arthur rolls off the hill during the Micah fight. Dutch tells Micah to run as troops are coming in fast. Micah shoots into some brush thinking he is killing Arthur. Arthur is found by Indians and taken to the Chief. Rested and healed up he goes and finds Mary to spend the last days of his life with her. New identity and new area he lives for the next 3 years until his death from TB finally catches up to him. The chief extended his life span from TB with herbs and medicine.

Arthur dies a peaceful man in his mind knowing he done right by being with Mary is his last days.

Near the end of the final mission, as Arthur breathes one of his last breaths, CJ appears from the sky and gives Arthur a cure for his illness. The gang celebrates and even Micah isn't left out from a group hug, then CJ gives everyone a jetpack and they fly off into the sunset with Tahiti as their destination. It turns out, it was Dutch's plan all along.

In a mission cutscene before the end of Chapter 3, Arthur coughs in the face of everyone else in the gang, and in Edgar Ross's face, and gives them all TB.  They all die in a later cutscene in Chapter 4, and we have to sit through each cloying, tearjerking death scene, as each one of them says profound, sad stuff.

Before all these TB death cutscenes, Arthur has visited a saloon in Saint Denis, where he ordered realistic steak, which they served with a side of stale bread and some mouldy cheese.  Turns out the mouldy cheese is a precursor to penicillin, and it cures Authur.

Subsequently, through a series of missions, he eventually becomes the biggest power player in Saint Denis, and then is voted US Senator from Lemoyne in 1900, based on his down-home, aw-shucks country personality.  After two terms as Senator, in another mission 12 years later, he runs for President of the United States in 1912, and wins.

Arthur decides to involve the United States in World War 1 early in the conflict, helping to beat back the Germans very early in the war, saving 10's of millions of European and American and German lives.  He negotiates the German surrender, and the German people are so captivated by Arthur's charming personality that they feel no resentment over losing WW1, so the Nazis don't gain a political folllowing, and so there is no WW2.

Arthur wins the Nobel Peace Prize, and writes his memoirs, and people put statues of Arthur Morgan in every major and minor city in the world.

The End.

OP you're a genius. That would have been way more cool to play through and makes sense to the events in RDR1.

I'm pretty okay with the ending as is, but I don't think playing as John after finishing the game in free mode was the right call. I spent all this time working to help John go from his outlaw past to family-man rancher future just to have him leave his family to run around everywhere his gang used to run to pick up bones, rocks and dreamcatchers while causing whatever mayhem in between? Totally breaks what they were going for to me. I think they should have had you play as Sadie after the revenge mission to get Micah, even though that still doesn't make complete sense I think it makes more sense for John's story. Also why can't John say hello like a normal person from horseback.

I honestly thought they would have a callback to this ending and bookending them since they are both similar in the nature of a dead protagonist sacrificing himself (Arthur RDR2 and John RDR1) so that the current playable character (John RDR2 and Jack RDR1) have a chance at a normal life but put all that in jeopardy by taking revenge. We John got the bureau of investigation on his trail whereas Jack may have gotten away. But oh well. Just would have made the conclusion more epic.

Arthur needs to die for his character arc so definitely wouldn't change that. It's fitting to play as John after that to set up RDR1 properly.

Wish he got to kill Micah though and yeah John meeting Dutch in the epilogue felt a bit forced. Overall the ending was amazing though.

Also Bill and Javier were already wasted in the original RDR1, especially the latter. They were mentioned a lot because John was hunting them but it's not like they weren't great characters (if anything RDR2 fleshed them out more and showed they weren't just evil). Dutch was the only memorable one

Since everyone’s already said the ‘Art doesn’t die’ idea, I’ll play it different:

When Dutch leaves John for dead, he never shows back up. Instead, he doesn’t return until the final moments of the last mission. Micah has Arthur pinned and is about to kill him, but John arrives and kills Micah. Arthur expresses pure shock that his friend is still alive, and John tells Arthur where he’s been: he’s been taken in by the Pinkertons, and they offered him freedom in exchange for hunting down the living members of the gang. Including Arthur. Arthur asks why John saved him then, and John simply states “Micah was on the list too. Besides, you deserved to know the story.” Arthur, on the verge of death from TB anyway, simply accepts his fate. Knowing in his last breath he helped John escape. John aims his gun at Arthur, and the camera switches behind John as we take control of him. The objective pops up on screen: ‘Kill Arthur Morgan.’ And we pull the trigger, ending Arthur’s story.

Then the game jumps to 1903, where John has managed to track down several of the gang members throughout the map. We players are tasked with hunting down Sadie and Charles. The Pinkertons have decided the rest of the living gang aren’t a threat, and thus there’s no reason to hunt them down. The Pinkertons have yet to manage to locate Dutch, Javier, and Bill. After we kill Sadie and Charles, the game jumps again to 1911 where John is taken from Beecher’s Hope by Ross and his partner back east due to a lead on Dutch. To ensure John follows through, they inform him Abigail and Jack have been taken hostage until the three remaining members are dead. After going there, we find the lead to either be phoney or old. Ross then delivers John a lead on Bill in the state of New Austin. They board a paddleboat back to Blackwater. After they leave the docks, John is placed on the first train to Armadillo. The screen fades to black and the mission name appears on screen: Exodus in America

From then on, we play a full remake of Redemption 1.

At the very end of the game, you’re given three options: freeroam in 1899 with a healthy Arthur and no camp [but can’t go to Redemption 1’s map], freeroam in 1903 with John [but can’t go to Mexico], or freeroam in 1914 with Jack but only in Redemption 1’s map. You can switch at any time, and each character has their own postgame challenges. Any stats/equipment carries over between switches, including Redemption 1’s guns. [even though several would be anachronistic in 1899]

I honestly hoped Thomas Downes' son was going to come back for Arthur years later and kill him in an optional stranger mission ala "Remember My Family" then you play as Thomas Downes son the scruffy looking mustache guy from the gameplay trailer who was robbing the train

Like who the f*ck are you, just some nobody with a gun whos pa you robbed out for vengance, and that's how it really goes, just some nobody with a gun gets lucky and kills the famous gunslinger

I'm fine with the way the ending played out in chapter 6. But the epilogue with John I felt was unnecessary.

So here's what I think.

The final few missions play out pretty much exactly the same way except for a couple different details.

Help John (High Honor): Arthur and Micah are slugging it out on top of a mountain and Arthur is losing the fight. The two grapple, Micah shoves Arthur to the ground, taunts him some, but Arthur finds the strength to shove Micah over his shoulders and off the cliff, where he falls to his death, perhaps crushing his skull on the rocks or being impaled by a dead tree. The last of his strength spent, he expires looking to the sunrise.

Help John (Low Honor): The same fight. Arthur and Micah grapple at the cliff's edge. A loose rock gives way and both men tumble over the edge. Micah gets impaled on a tree. Arthur somehow survives the inital fall, but then gets crushed by a rockslide triggered by the two and ends up being buried alive.

Get Money (High Honor): Arthur finds the stash in the caves and runs out with it, but Micah confronts him. The two engage in a knife fight. Micah stabs him in the gut, but Arthur slashes his throat, and both collapse to the ground. Arthur gets a few last moments to look at the sunrise before passing away.

Get Money (Low Honor) Arthur finds the stash in the caves and runs out with it, only to find an army of Pinkertons waiting for him, Micah standing confidently with them. Arthur is executed on the spot as the entire squad unloads their firearms into his body. Then, as Micah is about to celebrate, the Pinkertons decide to not leave any loose ends and blow Micah's head off with a shotgun.

End credits roll, and as they do we see a brief scene with an injured John meeting up with Abigail and Jack, and them riding off into the sunset.

After the credits roll, we're returned to just before the "point of no return" in chapter 6 to freeroam as we like.

The ending was pretty meh... Dutch showing up like that didn’t make sense really and then all of a sudden shoots Micah and walks away without saying anything and leaves all the money behind lol.

I’m glad John’s family ended up together like that...

As for Sadie, I didn’t like that she was bossing around and acting like an all mighty bounty hunter/bad ass etc. She only became an outlaw after her husband was murdered few years back and it didn’t make sense for her to become mrs know it all.

Telling John what to do and all that, are you serious Sadie? John has been an outlaw all his life. Show some respect! She became an obnoxious character in the epilogue,

Yes, now- this- is nihilism done just right, just like the movie Unforgiven, where there is no justice, no balance, no pattern, just people doing the wrong thing, using the wrong information, for the wrong reasons ("Deserve's got nothing to do with it.").

As opposed to the actual story arc of RDR2, which is scripted destiny, cratering straight into the ground, trying to appear nihilistic and thus arty, but instead just being frustrating.

I agree.  There was hardly any continuity or logical buildup to Sadie becoming Mrs. Badass, suddenly, in a couple of different missions.  It's clear they wanted to write a badass female into a main role in the RDR2 story, but it's clunky as hell.  Badass needs to be done right, as I said in the Karen Daniels thread.

This is just another symptom of Rockstar losing their way, chasing Hollywood dreams and slowly abandoning their video game roots.
