Do you think we will see the full map?

Without going into to much detail due to spoilers, do you think we will be able go into to new austin territory?

As much as I would hope so, I doubt we will be able unless they make some changes in that area.

I wonder what what everyone else thinks?

I'd hope so. My personal wish is that online is just as alive as storymode.

Honestly I think online is the main reason that New Austin was added at all, only one story mission in the main game is set there, and it easily could've been set in a different location, that would be a lot of work for them to put in just for a nostalgia trip, particularly since the entire epilogue is a nostalgia trip anyways. It makes far more sense that they decided that New Austin would be a relatively easy way to increase the map size for Online and its inclusion in singleplayer is rather tacked on, since they've mentioned they want RDO to be more narrative driven I wouldn't be surprised if the Tumbleweed Sheriff and Armadillo's cholera epidemic played a larger role in RDO.

Yeah I definitely think we'll see New Austin fleshed out Online and/or in possible single player DLCs. Whole lotta map to have put the effort into just to leave it practically empty...

The map we see is NOT the map we get. Take the grizzlies up north for example. They might look impressive in size, but the truth is the map isn’t as big as the borders suggest. How?

There are two large areas within the grizzlies that we CAN’T access. Those two areas are......

Area #1. The Tempest Rim - This area north of Valentine. It’s a large part of the grizzlies that we have ZERO access too. If you look on the map for a area called Tempest Rim you will see for yourself. This area isn’t off the map or anything like that, it’s clearly within the map borders, but completely INACCESSIBLE.

Area #2. The mountain we rescue John Marston from in Chapter 1, Mission 2 is only accessible during this mission, then it’s completely blocked off from being visited again. That sucks. This is a MASSIVE mountain above the clouds that has paths and climable ledges as seen in the mission. During the mission we climb up one way and climb down another way.

Before I go wishing/hoping for new areas or more flushed out areas. I hope Rockstar actually grants us access to the map we already have. The RDR2 map looks massive according to the map’s borders, but it’s far from the actual map we are able to explore.

I hope they keep the map as it is in story mode, except maybe "open up" a bit more of New Austin. Apart from Tumbleweed, any of the other towns/noteworthy locations in NA didn't really feel that worth visiting imo.

I also hope they keep saloons and other buildings open in Saint Denis, Valentine, etc. Perhaps even make some more buildings accessible?

That's the one thing I love about this map. The massive amount of interiors. I'm super hyped for online. R* don't fail me now!

First of all, Why do you think they won’t allow us to go there? I’m just curious. We are free to go there in single player, so why not multiplayer?

The reason the majority of New Austin had little to no interactions is because it would conflict with RDR1. We don’t get to explore New Austin as Arthur in RDR2, and John isn’t really supposed to interact with the New Austin townsfolk prior to RDR1. That is why Tumbleweed is the only location with real characters and side missions/bounties. (it was a ghost town during RDR1 so it wouldn’t conflict with the events of the first game). They made it so that

- Armadillo is plagued with cholera.

- Macfarlane Ranch (Drew & Bonnie) are on a trip.

- Thieves Landing is a gang hideout.

- Rathskeller Fork is private property. It’s all done for the sake of Johns story. If they allowed John to interact with these towns in RDR2 it would conflict with RDR1.

Except that John doesn't really interact all that much with anyone (of importance) in neither Armadillo or TL, apart from the lawmen and Irish respectively. Macfarlane Ranch I can understand and a populated Tumbleweed makes sense as well. But if the inclusion of NA is so conflicting with John's story in RDR1, then why did they include it at all to begin with? A lot can happen in four years. Especially in western frontier towns, I imagine.

Marshall Johnson and his deputies are nowhere to be seen, which again makes sense, but that also means they could've done so much more with a place like Armadillo without the stories ever conflicting. Not simply put it in a cholera epidemic and call it a day. The same thing goes for TL. Even more so with that one, but at least they made something useful/noteworthy out of it RDR2.

I just don't buy it as being all that conflicting. To me it seems more like a rushed and lazy decision on Rockstar's part.

Yup I know what you mean. Having played RDR1 storyline many times, and maxing my level Online, the single player Free Roam world always felt Dead compared to single player.

With 32 players we will NEED the full map.

What reasons do they have to prevent us from reaching there? If anything New Austin will play a much larger role online.

I gotta say I was very surprised that New Austin plays such a small role in the SP campaign, considering it’s even there at all. R* obviously put in a lot of work into facelifting and polishing it (haven’t seen that much of it yet but what I’ve seen is a huge improvement on RDR1), but we only get to visit it at the very end. It’s strange.

OnT, the above would lead me to believe that yes, we will be able to visit New Austin Online, otherwise it’s just hugely under-utilized. Could of course also be that R* locks it away in the same fashion as for SP, and it unlocks later. Who knows.

I knew pretty early on that New Austin was in RDR2 because of spoilers, but my belief was always that Arthur would make his way down there eventually in a manner of escape. 😪

Especially since John mentions in the beginning of RDR1 something like ”I was in a gang, we used to rob people and bla bla but I never went this far south” - essentially saying he’d never been to Armadillo.

Yup, like most of the guys above said, full map isn't even in question. There's only really 1 more thing about map that everybody wants to know but i won't mention it again :)

I hope RDO is set in an earlier time period. Perhaps ‘80s, with blackwater being a smaller town under construction, where players can play a part in the construction and it evolves slowly over the life span of RDO. It would also fit online better to be set earlier, in a slightly wilder west.

yea New austin is still a very viable area to explore and have fun in and i have no doubt that rockstar will add onto the map with time. Cutting new austin is like cutting off about 15-20% of the total map

From what ive read it unforunately isnt earlier.. its later than RDR2 SP but before RDR1 SP

Do you have a source from R*? Most of what I have read so far is just guessing. It would make sense to set it earlier, before armadillo is emptied of people.

ive looked it up again and it indeed isnt a direct R* source afaik. some RDR community on insta.  but rest of it seems true as well . Only thing they are stating is that "RDO will take place after the events of RDR2" . which seems logical to me.. therefore i think my earlier post might be correct because RDR1 takes place after RDR2.

Pre-story setting is certainly possible, but my money is on a setting roughly between the end of Arthur's story and the beginning of RDR1, 1899-1911. A 12 year general timeframe gives them plenty of leeway to make use of story characters after the breakup of the Van Der Linde gang without necessarily needing to get restrictively specific with characters who carry on into RDR1.

I believe the online story setting is at 1899. In some other thread, some dude (@Cutter De Blanc was it you? Im not sure) had taken his time to look around the West Elizabeth map and found lots of evidence that it is set at that year (despite we only being able to reach that area in the epilogue which is set in 1906).

I could see characters from rdr1 appear as well, such as Marshall Johnson and seth

Yeah, all of the graveyards in New Austin are from 1899. No graves later than 1898 anywhere in New Austin. It's safe to say New Austin doesn't have a 1907 variant like the rest of the map. I wouldn't presume that online will be set in 1899. They may simply not mention the timeline
