As I like to play my games in the most chronological way possible just like you I noticed that this sequence doesn't make any sense.

In Pouring Forth Oil [IV] at the end, Arthur mentions that he already found "some of them near Horseshoe Overlook".

  Reveal hidden contents

(I presume he's talking about Milton and Ross encounter in A Fisher of Men)

That being said, I have found that the most logical order for those missions would be:

Pouring Forth Oil [III] - Do it at night. Do not sleep, go straight into Micah mission.
An American Pastoral Scene - Try to get that by 5-6AM.

  Reveal hidden contents

(the wagon shows up by 7:30 AM more or less)

A Fisher of Men - Do it straight after An American Pastoral Scene, since fishing in the morning makes more sense and the next needs to be done during afternoon.

Pouring Forth Oil [IV] - Do what you want but be there during afternoon. (Arthur haven't slept and he'll do it till nightfall during the first mission scene)

I know what you mean. One thing I noticed though is that during the fishing Arthur says "It's getting late" or something like that which makes me think it should be done during the afternoon because 5 or 6pm onwards would be late for a kid like Jack and Arthur would know he needs to go and do the train robbery too.

For that reason I like to do Pouring Part 1, 2 and 3 in the morning, Fisher of men in the afternoon and then Pouring Part 4 after that which automatically transitions to night during a cutscene in the mission where Arthur and Sean "get some rest before nightfall". Also once you have told John that you have the wagon he tells Arthur to "meet us at the wagon when you can" so it makes sense to get there soon otherwise John would be in the middle of nowhere waiting for Arthur.

Thanks bud. I know what you mean but remember Arthur didn't approach Hosea to talk about the bonds it is simply brought up in conversation during the mission. It's also worth noting that whenever something needs selling Hosea is the one who deals with it by default so Arthur would already know this having known him for 20 years. There are several examples of this in chapter 3 such as when the gang steals the moonshine Hosea is the one who's job it is to sell it. Plus when you steal the rifles with Lenny Arthur can actually ask him if he's had any luck selling those rifles.

I also like to speak to Dutch after missions. I've been meaning to note down which missions trigger something to say to him afterwards.

I think even though there are missions in camp at that point Arthur knows what's more important. It is strange having to go and get Swanson when for all Arthur knows he could be fine but I suppose because he hasn't returned overnight (if you sleep after American's at rest) Arthur could be worried. The main reason I go for him is because he is stupidly at Sean's party no matter what though tbh.

I don't think there is any dialogue that happens if you leave him there for a while although I rarely leave him there long to be honest due to the Sean's party situation.

Yeah I know it’s not right to rescue Sean before Swanson because of the party thing but I just thought maybe Social Call could be done before getting Swanson then rescue Sean after that.

Hey guys, been reading through this thread the last few days and the insight has been great. I formed my own list using a little bit of information from everyone. Here is how mine plays out:

I checked what time the missions start by using the replay mission feature. Not all missions have a specified time, but some do so I listed the times for the ones this applies to.

CHAPTER 1:

Day 1

(12 AM) Outlaws From the West (The gang arrives in Colter at this time, the VERY FIRST FIST FIGHT happens in Sadie's barn, so I'm going to ignore trying to chronological order things based off the tutorial missions)

(7 AM) Enter Pursued by a Memory

Day 2

(6 AM) (Day begins with "We have been running for weeks" Journal entry narration)

(9 AM) The Aftermath of Genesis (feeding the camp should be number 1 on the agenda)

(4 PM) Old Friends

Title Screen reads "A Few Days Later"

Day 6

(9 AM) Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?

Day 7

(7 AM) Eastward Bound (Gang begins move to Horseshoe Overlook)

(4 PM) (Dutch sends Micah and Lenny to scout ahead, Micah says he'll buy Lenny a whisky which sounds like a direct tie-in to the Strawberry incident)

When you arrive at camp Strauss says he is going to head into town to see if he can strike up some business

CHAPTER 2:

Title Screen reads "A Couple Weeks Later"

Day 1:

(9 AM) (Hosea gives you a few leads to start off the chapter. Micah can be seen in camp, going off another users experience it seems like Grimshaw sends them out scouting again after this. Arthur socializes around camp, performs chores then heads over to the train station any time before 5 PM. Because 5 PM is when he finishes playing cards.)

(5 PM) Who is Not Without Sin (Learn Poker, get into yet another fist fight which gives you practice before the huge "Boss" fight in Valentine, learn to stop witnesses, save Swanson and return to camp)

Day 2:

(8 AM) Polite Society, Valentine Style

Americans at Rest (Trelawny arrives after the fight and tells Dutch where Sean is being held, Dutch sends Javier, Charles and Trelawny to scout Blackwater, then tells Arthur to get cleaned up and join them when he's ready. This should be first on Arthurs agenda.)

Stranger - The Noblest of Men (After the fight Arthur heads down to the other Saloon for a drink, triggers this stranger mission. Then walks back to camp)

Day 3:

(10 AM) The First Shall Be the Last (The mission starts at 10 so get there before hand. On the way back to camp Arthur runs into a Stranger selling a map, and robs him. Then they party at night)

Stranger - Jack Hall Treasure Map (I choose to rob the guy because he makes it sound like he's out of time and has to leave the country, why would Arthur choose to do him a favor pay someone who seems like he has no other ways of profiting off this map. Plus Arthur isn't fully reformed in his decision making yet.)

Day 4:

Paying A Social Call (Kieran has been tied up to that pole for weeks now, supposedly without food. It's time to figure out what his value to the gang is, or get rid of him.)

Good, Honest Snake Oil (It's time for Arthur to start making a little cash and get these chump change bounty missions out of the way early. The cutscene is perfectly ambiguous for this type of open mission structure. The Sheriff openly talks about how he knows you aren't exactly a saint, presumably after the huge fist fight in the street.)

Day 5:

Stranger - A Test of Faith (Stop by Dinosaur bone lady on the way to Emmett Granger's)

Emmett Granger (After killing him, kill his pigs and bring one of their carcassses to Pearson at camp, which will trigger Pearson telling you about the Trapper and his location.

(5 PM) A Quiet Time (Start this mission any time before 5 PM. If you hover over the mission on the map, the description is "Ask Dutch if he has found a buyer for the bonds", which makes me believe this should come before Exit by a Bruised Ego. Also, when out with Lenny, you should let yourself get caught, because that seems to be the canon approach according to some dialogue later in the game - thanks whoever mentioned this. And although Arthur is in no rush to rescue Micah, Dutch gave him clear orders to do so. Plus he's in jail waiting to be hanged, there is no time to waste.)

Day 6:

(8 AM) Wake up in jail with Lenny

Blessed are the Meek? (Micah tells you to visit him at his camp and he'll make it up to you. But Arthur could care less, he can't stand Micah. Head back to camp and on the way Arthur stops for a smoke break at Flatneck Station and encounters the Card Collector)

Stranger - Smoking and Other Hobbies

When you get back to camp Dutch approaches you and asks you to do him a favor and help Strauss with money lending. Arthur says he's been working hard but begrudgingly agrees to help him, for Dutch. Miss Grimshaw tells you she saw Mary Gillis sniffing around.

Day 7:

(5 PM) Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego (Start this mission any time before 5 PM. You should now have enough money to buy a good sized horse and avoid the shrink down animation. Arthur asks Hosea about the bonds.)

(11 PM) Set up camp with Hosea and sleep.

Day 8:

(7 AM) Arthur and Hosea continue their hunt the next day. Choose the split up approach, and stay to hunt the bear after. Seems canon due to dialogue later in the game, someone else mentioned this. Sell the Pelt to the nearby trapper. On the way back to camp you rescue a woman whose trapped under a horse, she asked me to drop her off in Valentine. While in town, grab the second bounty poster.

Bounty - Ellie Anne Swan (Capture and return her for some chump change)

Day 9:

(8 AM) Spines of America (Miss Grimshaw told you Hosea wants you to come to Emerald Ranch. This should serve as an introduction to Emerald Ranch according to Arthur's Journal. I chose the day time robbery approach because of Hosea's line later where he says "we met your cousins, nice people")

Day 10:

Money Lending and Other Sins 1-2 (Collect the first 3 debts. Return to camp, hear Strauss's request to retrieve the Downes debt. After the cutscene ends Arthur is walking towards his bed, not the horse/camp exit. Call it a night.)

Day 11:

Money Lending and Other Sins 3 (Visit Downes, beat him up. Arthur contracts Active TB, symptoms show within the first few weeks so we need to start this asap before Javier's homestead robbery mission. After giving Strauss the money, I go out and collect the treasure from the first Jack Hall Gang Map)

Day 12:

We Loved Once and True (On the way to Valentine I was ambushed by an O'Driscoll wagon road block. I killed them, then took their wagon to Seamus's newly acquired Fencing operation. I came back to Valentine for the Mary mission and passed by the side saloon where Uncle can be seen getting kicked out, stopped for a quick chat with him and then met Mary. She tells you to go to Carmody Dell, Arthur knows where that is now because of the Hosea mission)

Day 13:

Flaco Hernandez (I know some find it strange to send Arthur back into the snow after they spent weeks complaining about how miserable they were up there. But he believes there's a reward in it for him if he helps this author out, so it makes sense for Arthur to go back up in the snow while he's still here. Kill Flaco, on the way back down, loot the house near Barrow Lagoon, hunt the legendary ram. Go back to camp and do not sleep past 6 AM.)

Day 14:

Charles - Hunting (After this mission sell your legendary ram pelt to the trapper)

Javier - Homestead Robbery (Arthur starts showing symptoms of TB at the end)

Day 15:

Pouring Forth Oil 1-3 (I think the true canon way is to steal the Wagon's while they are on route or in Valentine. Arthur is a lot like Hosea and wouldn't want to head into a facility guns blazing when there is an easier solution. But there is a weird glitch where the wagons sometimes don't leave. Just save your game, reboot and when you load up your game the wagons should be in different locations. To me this isn't cheating or ruining the immersion, it's a glitch.)

Edith Downes can be seen coming to camp later the day and returning some debt to Strauss, she mentions to him that her husband has passed, I've witnessed this happen on two different playthroughs.

Day 16:

Fisher of Men

(7 PM) Pouring Forth Oil 4 (Arrive before 7 PM if possible. The gang waits till 9 PM and then heads out)

Day 17:

(8 AM) The Sheep and the Goats (I got to camp around 5 AM and didn't sleep, I figure Arthur is still wired from that shootout and decided to have some coffee and meet up with John who said he was going to Valentine.)

A Strange Kindness (Time to move, Arthurs lack of sleep might explain his attitude in regards to helping out the family they discover hiding)

By my count the gang has spent exactly 1 month at Horseshoe Overlook.

I saved An American Pastoral Scene for Chapter 3. I don't think Arthur cares for Micah and is in no rush to see him. Micah isn't a part of any story missions until much later in Chapter 3 anyway. I will head back to see him when Strauss gives me money loan mission number 4 near Strawberry.

- I usually choose to visit Swanson first, because the guys in town have a hotel and women to keep them company. Swanson can't defend himself so he probably requires checking in on first. But if you really, really want to have Polite Society be the first mission, you can save Swanson after doing The First Shall Be the Last, on your way back from Blackwater stop by the train station and the mission should be available, and the mission times match up which is even better. This way you have everyone back at camp for Sean's party, let me know if this mission is still available or if all story missions get locked down after rescuing Sean.

- I'm locked in on the order of Americans at Rest and The First Shall be the Last. Dutch tells you to get cleaned up and join them in Blackwater, this is urgent and no other time consuming story mission going between them.

- There are two ways to handle Pouring Forth Oil. You can steal the wagon or you can "forget" about it and let someone else steal it for you. For the second approach you can talk to John as soon as someone at camp tells you he was looking for you, which you should probably do before reading Mary's letter and doing her mission. That way Arthur will have a good reason for his mind to have been so side tracked that he completely forgot to steal a wagon, plus I kind of like that he messes up at some point in his relationship with John, so that its not so one-sided with John always being the one that messes up. Also, the wagons tend to glitch and not leave the factory sometimes so this might be a good approach.

Working on Chapter 3 next, its tricky.

Here is an easier to read version of the list:

Who is Not Without Sin

Polite Society, Valentine Style

Americans at Rest

Stranger - The Noblest of Men

The First Shall Be the Last

Stranger - Jack Hall Treasure Map

Paying A Social Call

Good, Honest Snake Oil

Stranger - A Test of Faith

Emmett Granger

A Quiet Time

Blessed are the Meek?

Stranger - Smoking and Other Hobbies

Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego

Bounty - Ellie Anne Swan

Spines of America

Money Lending and Other Sins 1-2

Money Lending and Other Sins 3

We Loved Once and True

Flaco Hernandez

Charles - Hunting

Javier - Homestead Robbery

Pouring Forth Oil 1-3

Fisher of Men

Pouring Forth Oil 4

The Sheep and the Goats

A Strange Kindness

Some good thoughts bud. I had the same thought the other week about checking start times by doing replays and checked some myself. I don't think it's accurate in the replays though and don't think it's worth basing playthrough order on because of that.

For example after American Distillation it is night and Hosea heads straight over to the Braithwaites with the moonshine after which Dutch tells you to go and meet him so it only makes sense to go and do that mission (joys of tobacco) straight away otherwise if you instead did it the next day Hosea would be at the Braithwaite overnight which is pretty unlikely. The mission also seems like it's set at night because there is noone around working like there is in the day etc. However during the reply the mission always begins in the day.

I think in general the whole replay system is a bit messed up. Good to know those times though thanks.

I'll post another message tomorrow about my thoughts on your mission order because I need to sleep ha

I suppose you could do that and that way you wouldn't have to dodge Hosea when leaving camp because Social Call ends outside of camp too. But it seems a bit strange because Dutch is involved in this mission at the start and the last thing he told you to do was to look for Sean "when you're ready" so dealing with Kieran instead seems like you've ignored his orders if that makes sense.

I think dealing with Kieran is a bit of a luxury mission because I doubt Arthur would have a problem leaving him there another day or 2.

Yeah you’re right I didn’t think about Dutch being there at the start of Social Call.

I really wish they didn’t add in Hosea calling out “Hey Arthur” and just had him sit there silently until Arthur greets him lol.

I agree about most of the mission start times not mattering. But there are certain ones that skip forward and I think those are important to nail. Like the Joys of Tobacco immediatly after Art of Advertising. Art of Advertising should also start around 8 o clock because Hosea bribes the gaurds for a "half hour of their time" to give away the booze, and the Lemoyne Raiders barge in at 9PM. So 8 is a good starting point for this mission. It's a busy day/night for Artuhr.

And during chapter 1 I thought it was noteworthy that replay has Pearsons mission start at 9 and Bill's mission start at 4. That is around the exact time you return from hunting with Charles.

The last mission of Chapter 3, the Battle of Shady Belle, ends up transitioning right into the beginning of Chapter 4 with Dutch and Arthur heading into Saint Denis and Dutch giving instructions to search the place to find clues of Brontes whereabouts. The clock is 4PM at this time. I think thats important to note, because once you hunt down the kids in Joys of Civilization, you meet back up with Dutch and he tells you he's going to get John and to meet him at Bronte's house. The game then has a short cutscene and when you get control of Arthur again it is now 9AM. If you go meet up with Dutch and John at that time, it will fast forward to 9 Pm when you leave Bronte's house. I like to kill time during the day and arrive around 8Pm and make the sky transition feel more natural.

Has anyone figured out what the time frame window is for some of the companion activities like robbing a stacecoach with Bill and Sean in Chapter 3? It seems like you need to do missions in a certain order or you risk missing out on these.

Some great points there Ant. When I said I didn't think times mattered I was mainly referring to the times that missions start when you use the replay option. For example I think if you replay Joys Of Tobacco it is set in the day sometime whereas it is pretty clear that we both agree it should be started at night. The replays themselves seem to be a bit messed up.

Completely agree about doing Joys of Tobacco straight after Advertising as it only makes sense because Hosea literally went there straight after Advertising and advertising is scripted to finish at night. I think one of the things that makes coming up with a 'correct' order so hard is that they accounted for all possibilities. For example in Joys of Tobacco if you go there in the day there is some dialogue about Sean and Arthur resting there until it's night whereas if you go there at night this dialogue isn't in it and it simply stays at night. It would've actually been easier to come up with an order if they didn't have things like this in the game although that would make the game less open and restrict player options.

Good point about the Lemoyne raiders turning up too although this doesn't concern me too much as I like to think that either Hosea just kept paying them to stay away or that they just left for good anyway. It's most likely just an oversight by Rockstar though ha.

I've recently been replaying Chapter 1 and I agree with you on that too. I used to always do Old Friends (Bill's Mission) before Aftermath of Genesis (Pearson's mission) but recently I'm starting to think that doing it the other way around flows better. There is some more dialogue in Aftermath if you do Old Friends first plus you can also speak to Kieran in the barn afterwards however more dialogue doesn't necessarily mean it is canon. It is likely included to account for all possibilities as mentioned above. The times also flow very well if you do them in the order you mentioned too and it means you can do them in one day rather than 2.

You're right about the first Angelo Bronte mission too. It does seem like a good little scripted break to explore town a little before that one. Otherwise Arthur could have just gone with Dutch to Bronte's.

I've tested a few times and it seems that the coach robbery missions are unlocked by completing the mission Friends In Very Low Places.

If this is done then both Bill's and Seans coach robberies should become available. However if Sean's home robbery hasn't been done then I THINK he will still be waiting for you to do that but if not this may cancel out his home robbery mission. I have always done his home robbery by this point so it's never really affected me. However if Bill's mission Sodom Back To Gomorah is active in camp and waiting to be done then obviously he won't be available for his coach robbery mission so this will also need to be finished before his coach robbery becomes active. And if Joys If Tobacco isn't done then Sean won't be available for his coach robbery until that is completed.

The Bill and Sean coach robberies basically disappear as soon as A Short Walk in A Pretty Town is unlocked (obviously so for Sean) because they are both involved in that mission and after that mission the story gets pushed forward into the Blood Feuds and Shady Belle missions ending the chapter.

The problem here is A Short Walk In a Pretty Town is unlocked by completing the 4 missions - Joys Of Tobacco, Horse Flesh For Dinner, Friends in Very Low Places and Blessed Are The Peacemakers but if you do those in this order for example:-

- Joys Of Tobacco

- Horse Flesh For Dinner

- Blessed Are The Peacemakers

- Friends in Very Low Places

then you will miss out on the coach robberies because the above will unlock Short Walk In A Pretty Town which makes the coach robberies disappear. I think this is why a lot of people are missing out on these missions. So basically as long as you don't do Friends in Very Low Places as the last of those 4 missions you will be fine e.g. :-

- Joys Of Tobacco

- Horse Flesh For Dinner

- Friends in Very Low Places

- <Coach Robberies>

- Blessed Are The Peacemakers

I don't think there is an actual timescale on these missions. I think people just assumed that was what was causing them to disappear when it was actually this.

That's actually hugely helpful, Jimmy - thank you.

The two Chapter 3 coach robberies were amongst the things that I missed on my first playthrough, that I was hoping to get now on my current second time through (I did do Sean's homestead robbery, and both the fishing side missions).

And it probably was because Friends in Very Low Places was the last mission I did of those 4. I will correct that this time through!

Out of curiosity, is there a similar trigger for Pierson's hunting and Uncle's rustling side missions in Chapter 4?

Neither of those came up on my first playthrough either. And it might be because I just rushed Chapter 4 a bit (Shady Belle wasn't my favourite so I definitely didn't take my time there as much as Horseshoe Overlook/Clemens Point) but it could also be because I did the missions in an odd, broken order (I sometimes have a tendency to choose an odd order just to be obtuse!).

I did get both Lenny & Micah's coach robberies.......

Fisher of Men

Pouring Forth Oil 4

The Sheep and the Goats

A Strange Kindness

Just getting round to replying to this bud.

Chapter 1

I like your chapter 1 and recently as I said in my last post I've been preferring to do Genesis before Old Friends like you too. I've noticed that at the start of Old Friends in the cutscene Dutch says "you might fancy living on deer piss and rabbit sh*t" which implies that Arthur has hunted the deer because when you do Genesis Pearson says the only food they have is "a few cans of food and a rabbit" i.e. no deer.

Chapter 2

For the start of Chapter 2 I would LIKE to be able to do Who Is not Without Sin first but one thing I've noticed is that when you start the chapter the 3 girls are in the exact position that they are in during the cutscene of polite society whereas if you leave and come back then they aren't and Karen is also suddenly the lookout if you leave and come back so it looks even more strange if you do polite society at any time other than first. It's almost like it's meant to be the first mission.

I also feel like doing Polite Society and then Americans on the first day allows you to go back to Valentine and explore a little and get the first bounty mission (which is directly unlocked by Polite Society) the next day as well as dialogue from some people about the fight with Tommy etc before doing Who Is Not Without Sin which takes place at 5pm

It's pointless me commenting on the stranger and companion missions etc as I believe these can just be slotted in where you feel they are convenient as you have done, with the exception of Javier where Arthur already seems to have TB but you took that into account too.

The rest I'd say is a pretty good order and one that I do myself sometimes. I used to do A Quiet Time before Exit Pursued too for the same reason i.e. the dialogue about the bonds although I never noticed that was in the mission description so that's new to me and useful. I've always been undecided about the dialogue because it seems that Arthur would KNOW that Hosea is the guy who sells the bonds rather than first hearing about it from Dutch but it does flow well if you speak to dutch first I must admit.

I usually like doing Social Call straight before Exit Pursued because of the way Hosea says "how are things between you and John?". When he says this it seems as though he is referring to you going out with John on your last mission whereas if you do things in the order you suggested Arthur has left and got Micah etc since the mission with John so it's strange why he wouldn't ask Arthur about that instead but they may have just left this out IN CASE people don't do it in that order if that makes sense. However you do have the option to speak to Hosea about the fact that you have rescued Micah during Exit Pursued so that's worth noting.

It is also worth noting that completing Social Call directly unlocks A Quiet Time so you may be right about it going right after Social Call.

Like you I also kind f like doing Money Lending 3 just before We Loved Once And True because it seems like a good switch for Arthur to go from his worst to his best.

So I'd change it to this:-

Polite Society, Valentine Style (Unlocks Good Honest Snake Oil)

Americans at Rest (Unlocks The First Shall Be The Last)

Good Honest Snake Oil

Who is Not Without Sin

The First Shall Be the Last

Paying A Social Call (Unlocks A Quiet Time)

A Quiet Time

Blessed are the Meek

Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego

Spines of America

Money Lending and Other Sins 1-2

Money Lending and Other Sins 3

We Loved Once and True

Pouring Forth Oil 1-3

Fisher of Men

Pouring Forth Oil 4

The Sheep and the Goats

A Strange Kindness

It's a pretty great order in fact bud.

I posted this on the last page.

About chapter1, I do think The Aftermath of Genesis should be done after Old Friends because you’ll notice that in the cabin Molly is doing her makeup in the next room and outside Javier is standing by the fire outside the next cabin and both of them are in the exact same position when you get back from doing Genesis first. If you do Old Friends first they’ll have changed what they’re doing when you get back so it looks better, plus the Old Friends mission marker is closer so it’s only natural do go there.

then there’s the fact the weather has cleared up abit during Aftermath and Charles mentions this. If you do Old Friends after then it seems the weather goes bad again.

I missed all of those things mate, especially the weather so will look into them very soon. Thanks very much.

I've been going between the first 3 chapters testing things out. I was curious as to whether I could get Polite Society, Americans At Rest and Who Is Not Without Sin done in the same day so I've been testing that out as my latest test.

Polite Society doesn't really matter because as long as you start it before 11:50 am time seems to stop at that time until after you and Uncle have left the shop and after that cutscene outside the shop plays. It even seems to fast forward to 11:50 am at this point too if it hasn't got to that time yet. It's doing the next mission and getting back to camp fast enough that's the issue.

The problem with this has always been the lack of a horse to get back but I noticed that if you walk out of town towards camp via the route where the murdered hanging dead body is there are always 2 O'Driscolls there who threaten you so you can kill them and quickly calm one of their horses and then use that to ride back to camp. You can then change out of your muddy clothes and take your own horse to Flatneck.

When I did this I got there for around 6pm and time resets to 5pm once you start the mission however there really is no visible difference in daytime between 5pm and 6pm so it doesn't really matter I don't think. I tried taking the O'Driscoll horse straight to Flatneck too however when you do this when the mission finishes your own horse spawns in it's place which looks a bit silly.

I did this because I was thinking that it cuts down the time the gang are left over looking for Sean, however I still don't think it flows as well as Doing Polite Society and Americans on Day 1 and then Exploring Valentine, Snake Oil and Without Sin on day 2 and First Shall Be The Last on day 3. It just seems like too much of a crazy rush to squeeze the missions in if you know what I mean and it means you can't get Snake Oil in early which seems like it should be done early. And relying on taking an randomly encountered O'Driscoll's horse to make it in time doesn't seem canon.

No worries bud.

Yep I think it's a very easy mistake and think that they should've locked missions until others are done to avoid things like this. My theory is that they originally had it so that the missions were more linear and had to be unlocked by doing other missions but then someone suggested that they should be more open hence why there are some missions you can do that have dialogue that suggests other missions have already been one.

I'm not completely sure about Pearson's and Uncle chapter 4 side missions as I've mainly been going between chapters 3, 2 and 1 but I'll check that out in depth soon and get back to you asap.

Much appreciated, but no hurry!

My first, roughly three month playthrough, was my 'explorer playthrough' where I spent my time trying to investigate every corner of the world, and get 100% (and I would've done so, if I'd had the time and patience for Gambler Challenge #8).

This second playthrough is going to be my 'hunting and camp playthrough' where I try and complete the animal compendium and the trapper/Pierson crafting lists, as well as try to listen to every conversation in camp as I possibly can through chapters 2-4.

So I don't anticipate being at Shady Belle for many weeks yet!

Sounds good man. I'm thinking about doing an 'evil' playthrough at some point and trying to do everything as evil as possible without causing missions to fail ha. I'm just so obsessed with mission orders though mainly because I want to make a movie type video of the game in the 'correct' order eventually.

Regarding doing everything though, I also planned to do that at first but I've noticed that there is SO MUCH that can't be finished until you are actually playing as John (without using exploits of course) such as:-

- Dinosaur Bones

- A lot of the challenges

- Legendary Animals

- Hunting Requests

- Points of Interest

The following collectible type things can be completed as Arthur:-

- Cigarette Cards

- Rock Carvings

- Duchesses and Other Animals

However only the Rock Carvings (which is easy enough to do), Duchesses and Other Animals (huge pain) and Dinosaur Bones have cutscenes at the end of them.

So it seems to me that it's best to just do most of these once you are John Marston. In previous playthroughs I used to stop and spend days as Arthur finding dinosaur bones and cigarette cards but I feel like it breaks the immersion so much so recently I've just been finding 1 dinosaur bone and then leaving the rest to John etc

On that note do you happen to know if you start Duchesses and Other Animals as Arthur and finish it as John if the cutscene changes? I know it does for the dinosaur bones mission because John mentions to her that she used to know a friend of his who died once he's found all 30.

I started Dutchesses with Arthur and did the first list as John and the cutscene changed. John mentions taking on the task for a friend who died and Wasp says a something like “you’re about 8 years late but it’s all good” then the next few lists go on as normal. There’s a cutscene after every list.

So Nikos already answered your question - I can just echo what he said because it was exactly the same for me!

I can sort of sympathise with you in trying to do the game realistically, because the way Rockstar games work - there's always someone waiting for you to take on the next mission, so any large gaps in the story are a little tough to justify without breaking immersion.

Could you do so after 'A Strange Kindness' though? If you just hightailed it out of camp when you wake up the following morning, could you then justify a long hunting/collecting trip then? Noone's actually told you at that point that you need to go see Dutch or Sadie, have they? Maybe you could just be seeking supplies for camp.......

I'll accept that I can't think of another such gap at any other point in the game that could thematically justify such a long break!

Also, Hunting Requests also has a cutscene, which is (almost) at the end. And the Legendary Fish have a cutscene at the end, followed by a final sort-of-mission.

Yes, I'm also contemplating being evil Arthur this time round as well (I was goody two shoes Arthur first run). I've already kicked Jimmy Brooks off the cliff!

I'm just not sure I'm going to be able to ignore people at the side of the road/stop chopping wood/stop randomly greeting strangers long enough to get truly into the red...........

While we’re on the topic of doing things as Arthur - is there a list of missions or things to do, to max out the quotes that are said during Arthur’s last ride with “That’s The Way it Is?” I’ve watched a few different videos of this scene, and each one has a line or two that I’ve never heard. Like one where Arthur says “once loyalty is all that mattered to me.”

Thanks bud that's great to know. Means I can finish that damn thing as John instead ha.

Goo to know there is a cutscene after each one though. I thought a few of them were just letter getting sent and rewards getting retrieved from the post office.

I'm guessing whoever got that line got it because they didn't help someone else if that makes sense. So the line from the person that they could've helped got replaced. I'll let you know what lines I get when I get to that part because my Arthur is over the top good ha.

I've tried the order for chapter 2 that we discussed i.e. :-

Polite Society, Valentine Style

Americans at Rest

Good Honest Snake Oil

Who is Not Without Sin

The First Shall Be the Last

Paying A Social Call

A Quiet Time

Blessed are the Meek

Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego

Spines of America

< Charles - Hunting >

Money Lending and Other Sins 1-2

Money Lending and Other Sins 3

We Loved Once and True

< Bounty Mission 2 - Ellie Anne Swan >

Pouring Forth Oil 1

< Javier - Homestead Robbery >

Pouring Forth Oil 2 - 3

Fisher of Men

Pouring Forth Oil 4

American Pastoral Scene

The Sheep and the Goats

A Strange Kindness

I have a bit of an issue with it however. As you can see I've included the companion activities in this one where I think they can fit in. I always like to do Javier's one late on because of Arthur's TB cough in it. The problem here is before pouring forth oil Grimshaw approaches you and tells you John is by the tree and wants to speak to you so you need to go to him next, however Javier is in range of where you stand when speaking to John which means you can hear him shouting hey Arthur as you are speaking to John which looks silly.

For this reason I literally did the first dialogue which John which basically IS Pouring Forth Oil Part 1 and then I turned and did Javier's homestead robbery because he had already shouted me. The good part about this is that it triggers the oil wagon to move to Valentine once it is finished. I still think it looks a bit silly though so I was thinking about doing Javier's mission a bit earlier but the only spot to put this is directly after Money Lending Part 3 which seems a bit soon for Arthur to be coughing. Can someone be coughing on the same day as getting infected with TB?

There isn't much chance after that because of the We Loved Once and True letter that Arthur would likely want to check out ASAP which unlocks pouring forth oil when it's done.

I'm wondering if I could move Money Lending before Exit Pursued as that way Arthur would have been infected longer but I don't like doing that as according to Arthur's journal it seems that Spines Of America is his first time in Emerald Ranch whereas he goes there during money lending 😩

From my understanding the quotes are different depending on your honor, but I’ve heard different quotes for two different “bad honor” rides. But it also makes me curious if there are any missable good honor quotes.

I'm pretty sure that TB has a bare minimum of a two week incubation period, so I don't think - barring finding time for a two week hunting trip, which I know you'll want to avoid from an immersion perspective - there's any way you can make Arthur's coughing with Javier make a whole lot of sense. Unless you presume he has a completely unrelated coughing illness for an afternoon!

It really feels like the Javier Homestead robbery was originally in a later chapter, and then they moved it up for some unknown reason. Maybe they just felt they need more camp activities in Chapter 2, and that was the closest one geographically. Who knows?

Yep that's what I've heard too. I think the symptoms kicking in early are just one of those gamey things. I know for certain that Arthur has the cough at the very start of Chapter 3 and they have only been at Clemens Point for a few days so even that based on real life would be a stretch. The hard part for me is finding a spot for Javier's homestead Robbery at some point after Arthur has been infected without him and John both shouting you at the same time like a couple of fangirls ha.

Ye but I think a lot of the missions in chapter 2 take you into the grizzlies where that one takes place so it kind of fits there but I know what you mean. I think it was meant to unlock late on in the chapter and has been move to unlock at any point after Firs Shall Be The Last which was silly of them.

I'm thinking about this as an early order to justify the symptoms after a couple of days in the game world at least:-

DAY 1

- Polite Society

- Americans At Rest

DAY 2

- Good Honest Snake Oil

- Who Is Not Without Sin

DAY 3

- Money Lending And Other Sins

- First Shall Be The Last

It kind of makes sense because at the start of Money Lending Arthur says to Strauss "Loaning Already?" meaning the gang hasn't been there long, plus the money you get back from the Money Lending mission (about $40 - $50) is very little compared to the other missions that will be after that. And it means that Arthur has taken care of the 3 things that Hosea mentioned at the start of the chapter - meeting the boys in valentine, strauss debt collecting and seeing Swanson at the train station. I'm gonna check it out now.

is there anywhere that shows the different outcomes the missions? I forget her name, but I went to visit the widow up by the big waterfall as Marston, and she killed herself. I was hoping that would end differently

Doesn't that only happen if you didn't help her out and do all of her side missions as Arthur?

Here is what usually happens I think:-

Just discovered something in Chapter 2 which makes things way easier for anyone who was having trouble with getting the oil wagon in Pouring Forth Oil. Normally when I start that mission both wagons are in the compound and I try all sorts of things to get them to leave. You can actually do a mission such as Javier's Hone Robbery and this will trigger the wagon to move when finished for some reason whereas there are other missions where if you do them the mission will cancel and John will have gotten the wagon because you took too long which I don't like. You can of course shoot your way in or ride out fast or scare the horses by shooting from far away to make them leave the compound etc but these either resulted in losing a lot of honour, taking a lot of damage or just felt too 'gamey' for me.

I have camped for days sometimes to see if they move but they never seem to. Today I noticed that even before the mission the wagon is in Valentine at around noon (I slept in the hotel til noon after a late night). This got me thinking so before going back to camp when the mission was available I camped until noon nearby camp and then when I spoke to Marston after the cutscene the wagon was in Valentine. I tried this several times because I made a save before starting the mission and whenever I started the mission early such as 7am the wagon was still in the compound and whenever I started it just after noon it was in Valentine.

Hopefully this helps someone.

I'm also guessing now that the reason why completing a mission to trigger the oil wagon to move worked was perhaps because the mission finishes at around noon.

Didn’t you want Money Lending done after Spines of America because of the Emerald Ranch thing though?

Yep that was mainly due to the journal entry that appears after that mission though:-

"Hosea and I went robbing, just like the old days. A father and son pair of clowns at some farm house. Stole a wagon, sold it to some rat Hosea had met at some odd place called Emerald [?] Ranch. What goes on there, I cannot tell, but this little poacher of goods had us go rob his own family. Even by my standards, that was low, but the father and son we robbed was proof that even God makes mistakes sometimes."

That always seemed to me that it sounded like it was Arthur's first time at Emerald Ranch but I'm not so sure. What do you think?

On the other hand I know that during Spines Hosea has the line "you're the one who's been out gallivanting around here" which I always thought implied that Arthur had been here before such as during Money Lending.

Technically you can unlock Exit Pursued (which unlocks spines) before unlocking Money Lending because you can unlock it by doing any one mission such as who is not without sin whereas to unlock money lending you need to specifically complete Americans At Rest, although helping Strauss out with debts is one of the first things Hosea mentions at the start of the chapter too.

I'm thinking doing it earlier gives Arthur to realistically get TB for the cough in Javier's mission though.

Yeah I suppose his journal entry is just his proper visit to Emerald Ranch even if he already had a quick visit to collect the debt earlier.
