RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 - "Chronological" Mission Order

Everyone else seems be away just now, so I’ll answer you alone. Honestly, I still like the original order. It was written based on a single play through, with the intention of creating a logical and coherent narrative. Since then, there has been much debate and new information, with seemingly-set-in-stone placements being overturned by easy-to-miss factors like lip synch issues and horse hitching locations. I think the most recent (and complete) order available is @jimmyoneshot’s, which I have copied and enclosed in the spoiler tags below. It contains only the main mission, gang activities, and honour missions for simplification purposes. When you say you want to clean up two achievements, which are you after? If they involve something to do with 100%, you’d be better off using one of the 100% orders. Simply to experience the story, though, I quite like the one enclosed.

Also, note that it is not complete. We have recently discovered a secret Strauss cutscene in chapter 2, as well as some inconsistencies with the black shire horse you sell during Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego. We are very nearly done! So chapter 2 will soon be revamped slightly, although I think the rest of the chapters are fairly robust.

The order below takes into account as much dialogue as possible, and this leads to some fairly odd-looking placements. So I think the original order still plays well, but this is the most up-to-date version (to my knowledge).

That's a good order, only thing I would change is to put The course of true love 1 and 2 before american distillation because Dutch says on The New South for you to get check the Gray's farm

And also would change Horse flesh for dinner to the fine joys of tobacco place and vice versa

A couple of things I noticed yesterday:-

  • If after Sean's Party you start Polite Society after 1pm after waking up from Sean's party time goes relatively quickly and it finishes at about 5pm or just after so when you get back to camp it is about 6pm or so. You'd have to try this to see what I mean. The reason why this feels better than returning earlier is because people in camp seem to have 2 'modes' - day mode and night mode. Night mode seems to start at 6pm at which point chores also become disabled. During day mode Uncle has some scripted conversations that cancel out being able to talk to him about what happened in Valentine - the one where he is sitting there and shouts Arthur over saying "Hey Arthur" and the one where he is reading the paper angry about the war with the Philippines. Dutch also doesn't seem to approach about Money Lending after 6pm.
  • I feel that Exit Pursued straight after Money Lending 1 - 2 fits really well because it is the only actual story mission left after we do the usual 5 missions (At Rest, Without Sin, First Shall Be Last, Polite Society, Money Lending 1 - 2) and it explains why Arthur would 'need a break' more the anything else. So I thought about Snake Oil before ML&OS 1 - 2. I haven't tried this in a while but I tried fitting Snake Oil, Money Lending 1 - 2 and then Exit Pursued into one day. The reason being Exit Pursued is meant to be an evening mission and if you start it early in the day time gets set to 5pm as soon as you enter the Stables. It seems too much to do all this in one day because even by rushing and literally doing only Snake Oil and Money Lending 1 - 2 and ignoring everything else it was still almost 6pm - 7pm by the time I got back to camp. Plus I think if Arthur was going to do Snake Oil he would mooch around town first as it is the first time he is there without an actual mission being there.

For the above reasons I'm thinking that only the following is really feasible:-

- Americans At Rest

- Who Is Not Without Sin

------------------------------------------

- First Shall Be The Last

- [ Sean's Party ]

- ( Sleep until noon )

------------------------------------------

- Polite Society Valentine Style ( start after 1pm )

------------------------------------------

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2

- Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego

I'm wondering if it is possible to fit in Charles Hunting, Snake Oil (sell the pelt in Valentine and then do this) and Spines the day after Exit Pursued perhaps while still having Spines in the daytime. I will test that later after work

I still don't quite understand why do polite society before money Lending, money lending was one of the leads hosea gave us and it would make sense doing polite society after it

I don’t think Money Lending before Polite Society works time-wise. As soon as you finish Money Lending, you need to start Exit so Arthur has a reason not to go after Downes. If you do Money Lending straight after Sean’s party, it will be too late to start Exit by the time it’s finished.

So if Money Lending can’t go straight after the party, Polite Society is the only other option.

Another reason is that I don’t count Strauss as a proper lead. Hosea never says “help Strauss”, he just says Strauss returned from town with a creepy little smile on his face. After following up on two out of three leads, it’s not unreasonable to assume Arthur might want to find some more. And I don’t think he would approach Strauss on his own, because he doesn’t like usury and thinks it’s dishonourable.

Because it's not urgent and Arthur despises it.

I always loved the way hosea says "that creepy little smile of his" and good points btw

With regards to completing the Chapter 2 order, shouldn’t Snake Oil come before Exit? Wasn’t it established that both Snake Oil and Money Lending should be completed first so that there is enough money for a decent horse? If so, the most natural spot for it seems straight after Polite Society. Also, what does everyone do with the stolen horse if they play Polite Society after Sean’s party?

Ye I was just thinking about this now. Considering Snake Oil is classed as a story mission I think it's likely Rockstar intended us to do it and you're right it seems that after Polite Society is the most logical spot because it is technically an extension of that.

I am really against buying anything other than the Standardbred so I think it is necessary to be able to afford that too. I remembered that we get a discount on the horse if we get some honour and even by doing things as honourably as possible and all sorts of random encounters with Money Lending 1 - 2 alone I wasn't able to afford the Standardbred because it didn't give me the discount and I don't think we can really rely on the discount anyway.

I think to solve the problem of where to put it that it is best to do it on it's own day and class it as Arthur's first PROPER exploration of Valentine on his own. So we could do stuff like visit each of the shops which gives us some dialogue about the Tommy fight from the Gunsmith too, do Snake Oil and then get a bath because I've always noticed Arthur seems to be scripted to get unavoidably filthy during Snake Oil which makes me think this was what they intended. Plus the Hotel Manager will mention the events of Polite Society too at this point. Then maybe watching a show before returning to camp in the late afternoon.

So something like this:-

- Americans At Rest

- Without Sin

----------------------------------------

- First Shall Be The Last

- [Sean's Party]

----------------------------------------

- Polite Society Valentine Style

----------------------------------------

- (Butcher, General Store, Doctors, Newspaper)

- Snake Oil

- (Bath, Show)

----------------------------------------

- Money Lending And Other Sins 1 - 2

- Exit Pursued

I’ve just finished doing Snake Oil After Polite Society, both after Sean’s party. Polite Society finished about 13:00 (because I started it quickly) and it’s now around 21:30 (after spending the afternoon in town and going after Allbright). Your idea sounds quite similar to what I have just done, where the only difference is the amount of time to spend in town. I suppose either works, but I do like the idea of having the whole day AND being able to bathe after the bounty which I currently don’t have time for.

Do you just ride back to camp on the stolen horse? I whistled for mine as we left, so I could return the stolen one and still chase the bounty. During the cutscene where Jimmy recognises Arthur, if you whistled for your horse you can see it some way off, so I suppose Arthur might have got on the closest horse rather than run after his own to prevent Jimmy from escaping.

Oh, and when going to First Shall be Last I usually get the snake bite encounter, which is another thing which can be done in town - choose a free gun.

Ye my issue with Polite Society is that it leaves us without a horse unless we actually whistle for our own one which obviously wasn't Rockstars plan hence why we steal a horse in town. So I think the idea was for Arthur to return with the group on the wagon but then Jimmy Brooks happened. This is why I think the next day for Snake Oil is best. It's likely that Rockstar expected us to walk freely around town at some point so I think it seems like a decent day for it.

Usually after returning the stolen horse the following encounter almost always happens 99% of the time in which case you can take one of the horses without getting a wanted level so this is my usual way of getting back to camp. As long as you just ride that horse back to camp and then flee it then you won't bond with it to Level 1:-

That all looks good. So if Snake Oil comes next, followed by Money Lending and Exit Pursued, then that just leaves Social Call and Spines. Obviously Social Call must come first to get Spines to spawn, but I think this works out well.

You return from the hunting trip, then get some breakfast and speak to Kieran while over there. Upon returning back to camp, Grimshaw tells you to go to Emerald Ranch, so Spines (day approach) happens mid-afternoon. Return with Hosea and this sets up Quiet Time perfectly.

That's very true actually. The only small issue is Arthur says "have you sold them bonds yet" and Dutch says "Hosea is working on it" when Arthur has just been on a hunting trip and robbery with Hosea. This is why I was thinking more along the lines of Charles Hunting and Spines on one day, sleeping and the Social Call and Quiet Time the next which would feasibly give Hosea the day to do this while we are out of camp at Social Call.

I'll nee to test it out a little bit though.

That too could work. The only things I can see being an issue are:

  1. You have to sell the Bison pelt in Valentine to get Grimshaw’s message, which isn’t a deal-breaker but is a bit of a waste of time and a waste of a perfectly good pelt that Pearson can use.
  2. Social Call needs to be started around noon if it’s to finish at 17:30, so something else has to fill the first half of that day

I’ll let you test it though to see how it goes.

I think the entire issue of Snake Oil boils down to the horse you must buy in Exit Pursued. Without Snake Oil, there’s no guaranteed way to get the required $150. If you don’t mind the Morgan, or have another way to make up the money, then I can see Snake Oil working well after We Loved Once and True III.

Good point.

Also in A Quiet Time Arthur mentions the last time he was in Valiente he got into a fight, so it makes sense for Americans At Rest to be the latest Valentine mission instead of Polite Society Valentine Style.

I personally never have this issue since I just purchased one of the two horses of my special edition but I get your point.

Edit: Also Exit Exit Pursued By Bruised Ego feels to much like a tutorial for horses, camping/crafting & hunting, one of the reasons I do it early

Also guys now I think without sin should definitely come after Americans at Rest cuz on the official guide, Americans at Rest is treated as the combat tutorial mission

And on the without a sin tab they say something on the lines of "use what you learnt on the last mission to take this opponent

Also in A Quiet Time Arthur mentions the last time he was in Valiente he got into a fight, so it makes sense for Americans At Rest to be the latest Valentine mission instead of Polite Society Valentine Style.

I took that dialogue to mean “The last time we were in the saloon”  I.e. Americans at Rest. Polite Society can still work first though.

I think he says something like "me and the boys got into a bit of a fight the last time we was here" but I think he's talking more about the saloon plus the fact he says "we" also means he's talking about when he was with the boys than on his own if that makes sense.

Ye that's true. We get the fighting mechanics during At Rest and then have a fight in Without Sin.

Yes, I’ve purposely tried completing the Without Sin fight using only the basic punch - no blocking or dodging - and it’s quite difficult. It makes much more sense to do At Rest beforehand, so the player knows how to fight properly.

@JonnyTNT7 @jimmyoneshot fair enough, I need to put more attention into that dialogue.

I've been testing and I'm really liking this approach so far;

*Polite Society, Valentine Style*

*Americans At Rest*

__________________________________________

*Who Is Not Without Sin*

__________________________________________

*The First Shall Be Last*

__________________________________________

*Paying A Social Call*

__________________________________________

*Money Lending And Other Sins I & II*

*A Quiet Time*

__________________________________________

*Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego*

__________________________________________

*Blessed Are The Meek?*

__________________________________________

*We Loved Once And True I*

*Money Lending and Other Sins III*

*We Loved Once and True II & III*

Try to do without sin on the same day as polite society and Americans at rest if you want cuz when you finish polite society it'll probably be 3pm in-game and then Americans at Rest finishes at 4pm or so, then when you go to get reverend the game locks to 5pm

I feel I need to ask this again... Is this thread about chronological story order or gameplay order? The in-game tips are made under the impression that you don't know how to play. It's more likely that someone new to the game is going to go for the missions closest to them ("Polite Society Valentine Style", "Americans at Rest") and go from there. Meaning Rockstar, more than likely, placed the in-game hints in the order they figured most new players would use. Arthur knows how to fight, from the start, so the tutorial has nothing to do with the story's chronological order.

Tbh I don't even know anymore, we are looking for the smoothest order but the boys here are looking for the original script order (what seems impossible to find out since many missions were deleted or changed) I think if we want rockstar original order just use the guide's order cuz rockstar worked very closely with piggyback to do it

I tried that at first but I felt it was to much for Arthur to do in one day...

Any thoughts on this? Personally based on what we've spoke about the last few days, I can't see anything else other than this for a few reasons:-

  • The 'Shire tests' show that Exit comes after Money Lending 1 and 2
  • Snake Oil needs doing before Exit Pursued too to be able to realistically afford a Standardbred
  • The way Arthur deals with Downes really fits with the cutscene where Strauss encourages him after reading Mary's letter so that seems canon
  • Although I think it feels weird to camp out overnight after Blessed Are The Meek before returning to camp it seems like the only way because when we get back and read the letter from Mary and do the Downes debt Grimshaw approaches to tell us about John for Pouring Forth Oil 1. The issue with this is John says he needs to "head into town for Abigail" and gives us the mission to retrieve the oil wagon, all of which makes much more sense in the morning than in the evening/at night which it would've been if we returned straight after Blessed

2 things I'm not sure on are:-

  1. Whether to let Pouring Forth Oil 2 skip and have John do it. This may makes sense because Arthur would likely go and see Mary and then forget about the wagon
  2. Where to place American Pastoral Scene. I simply can't see why Arthur would go straight to visit Micah when he is planning for a Train Robbery and just after he has seen the love of his life. However the mission is technically unlocked by Pouring Forth Oil. The choice is either where it is below or straight after Pouring Forth Oil 4 before Sheep and the Goats

I'll test it when I get a chance:-

- Americans At Rest
- Who Is Not Without Sin
---------------------------------------
- First Shall Be The Last
- [ Sean's Party ]
- ( Sleep until noon )
---------------------------------------

- Polite Society Valentine Style
---------------------------------------

- (Explore Valentine during this day too)

- Good Honest Snake Oil
---------------------------------------
- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2
- Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego (Return with Hosea)
---------------------------------------
- < Charles - Hunting >
- Spines of America (Return with Hosea)
---------------------------------------
- Paying A Social Call
- A Quiet Time
---------------------------------------
- Blessed Are The Meek
- ( Camp overnight )
---------------------------------------
- < Lenny - Five Finger Fillet >
- We Loved Once and True 1
- Money Lending and Other Sins 3
- Pouring Forth Oil 1
- We Loved Once and True 2 - 3
- ( Stay in hotel overnight )
---------------------------------------
- Pouring Forth Oil 2 *(Skipped)
- American Pastoral Scene
- Pouring Forth Oil 3
- Fisher Of Men
- Pouring Forth Oil 4
- ( Camp until noon )
---------------------------------------
- Sheep and the Goats
---------------------------------------
- Strange Kindness

That's very true actually. The only small issue is Arthur says "have you sold them bonds yet" and Dutch says "Hosea is working on it" when Arthur has just been on a hunting trip and robbery with Hosea. This is why I was thinking more along the lines of Charles Hunting and Spines on one day, sleeping and the Social Call and Quiet Time the next which would feasibly give Hosea the day to do this while we are out of camp at Social Call.

I'll nee to test it out a little bit though.

I used to do it there too but I think it feels really strange with Arthur returning to the police station after A Quiet Time.

He only returns if you get arrested. Whatever the outcome of A Quiet Time, you get different dialogue with Lenny at camp. So getting arrested isn't exactly the canon way, just the easier lazy way of your horse being close when you get out of jail lol.

I love that cutscene with Lenny in jail though ha. It feels like a shame to waste it. Plus, even though this is a VERY obscure thing to get, I noticed a while back that if you do Preaching Forgiveness before doing Female Suffrage and American Distillation then there is some unique dialogue where rather than talking about one of those missions Arthur and Lenny instead talk about the jail cell in Valentine even if we escaped during Quiet Time (2:00 mark) :-

Another thing i like to do sometimes after Quiet Time is go and get my hat from the pig pen and then Arthur notices the policeman at the back of the Doctor's office and does the Dr Robbery. I headcanon that Arthur takes the Schofield and that's why I also headcanon he lends Micah his Cattleman during Blessed Are The Meek and why Micah gives him a holster at the end of the mission i.e. to give Arthur his gun back 😄

Agree completely with your bullet points. My opinion about your unsure points:

  1. I don’t know if Pouring Forth Oil II is even skippable any more. I’ve tried Doing WLOaT II-III instead of PFO II, then I slept for a few days and the wagons were still available. This might be a glitch specific to my save file, or it might be a glitch for everyone. Someone else will have to test it to be certain. In any case, if PFO II is completed, it fits just before WLOAT.
  2. I really don’t like An American Pastoral Scene. There is nothing narratively to suggest it should be completed before the train robbery. I’ve outlined my thoughts on this before, but essentially in Arthur’s mind, in the player’s mind, in the story arcs - it should be left until after PFO IV. The trouble is that newspaper article saying law enforcement received a tip-off. It’s really obscure, but it does suggest AAPS should be done first. What do you think?

If American Pastoral is moved to after PFO IV, something else needs to fill the spot between PFO III and a Fisher of Men. My vote is for Hunting - Charles. It’s the only viable companion activity, and I think it flows quite well because you can return to camp with the pelt and donate it to Pearson for crafting, which puts you right beside Abigail to have her call you for a Fisher of Men.

  1. Ye you're right I couldn't get it to skip myself although saying that I only did a really quick test. I think maybe if I take it slow and play as I would normally it might work i.e. speak to John, travel to Valentine, get a haircut and then speak to Mary. Then there is also the woman who needs a ride to Emerald Ranch which almost always happens on the way to WLOAT 2 which could take up some time. Then staying in the hotel overnight fits well after WLOAT based on what Arthur says when he looks in the mirror in there - "You ugly bastard", "No wonder they all leave you" etc ha. I'll try it as out soon as I can but either way it fits.

It feels like too much of a connection that reading Mary's letter triggers PFO 1 and that there is a cutscene for if Arthur forgets the oil wagon. There aren't many/any other missions that have this as far as I can recall. It is like Rockstar put it in there as a choice between getting the wagon or visiting Mary to show that Mary is Arthur's weakness.

  2. I know exactly what you mean. The only thing that bugs me is the line where Arthur says to Sean "if I bring you I might as well bring Micah along" which I always thought implied Micah was back at camp although it could technically mean that Arthur could just go and get Micah from his Strawberry camp. The news article I never looked too much into because I think the whole setup thing was a Red Herring

@JonnyTNT7 Whoops pressed save too early.
