RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 - "Chronological" Mission Order

There were two Downes interactions, one before AAR and one after AAR. I have more than 4100 hours on this game. From 2018-2024. Two year break from 2022-2024. Just started playing again 2024. Somewhere in my break from playing, R* patched the 2nd Downes Interaction after AAR with one of RD Online Updates. I have Standard Disc version and the digital Ultimate Edition. I cannot get the 2nd Downes Interaction after AAR.

Brother, that’s great and all but I’m literally playing the game right now and just got the second interaction…you can only get one or the other, not both. If you want the second one you can’t walk past Downes before Americans at rest. Experimented with it just today. I also have thousands of hours over 4-5 playthroughs. Just started this recent one to do 100% completion.

I feel like I remember being able to get both my first second or maybe 3rd but this time around I’ve only been able to get one of the other

Polite Society after American at Rest, The Law saw Arthur beat up Tommy, Arthur killed Odriscolls at Six Point Cabin, Arthur killed Bounty Hunters saving Sean, Arthur Killed Law in Strawberry with Micah. Pinkertons knows the Dutch Boys is close to Valentine. In Polite Society, there is no reason to chase Jimmy Brooks before he rides to Blackwater.  Chasing Jimmy Brooks is programed into  the mission.

 

 

Jimmy Brooks recognises Arthur and is a possible snitch, so there is every reason to chase him down and talk to him/kill him regardless of whether Arthur has committed crimes or not. In fact it is what an outlaw like Arthur would do.

I'm currently working on something which might interest everyone here when I get time or I'm bored ha - a video of all of the unique dialogue responses that gang members have to Arthur completing missions in each Chapter.

 

For example after completing Americans At Rest, when talking to Bill, Arthur says "Bruises don't look so bad". He has unique dialogues with most characters which are triggered after completing certain missions so thought it would be interesting to compile them all. I've got all of the chapter 1 dialogues so far.

People with a holier than thou attitude. I have killed him a few times in playthroughs and always thought it might be better as you lose a lot of honour for it and it makes Arthur's redemption a little better going from bad honour to good.

That happened to me recently did you reload a save in chapter 1 ? I thought might’ve been the issue. I wasn’t that far into ch2 so I just started a new game, made sure to talk to everyone between missions in chapter 1 and it stopped

I feel like first time playing its a good first or second mission. Going back thru though it does fit well somewhere in the middle. Both of the leads that come from them going to town don’t happen until late chapter 2 and even into chapter 3. The lip sync at the beginning has me stuck as well. Definitely reasonable I think to do a day or 2 after Sean’s party

I prefer it as a first mission for chapter 2 but yeah after Sean's party is also a good fit.

I think it works well as the first mission in Valentine or after Sean's party.  Sometimes I do it after arriving back at camp with Hosea after Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego which is the mission I always do after Sean's party. I don't leave it too late in the chapter as Mary-Beth's dialogue about being cooped up for two weeks won't make much sense.

 

If I do it as the first mission in Valentine, I always follow up with Americans at Rest to kill two birds with one stone. I leave the bounty hunting mission for later on.

 

My main Chapter 2 starting mission is Who is Not Without Sin as it's a pain in the backside to put anywhere else and it's convenient as it's near camp.

Yes it happened after reloading a save. Updates have f*cked this game up.

I like to do without sin first then after I drop off Swanson in camp immediately follow with polite society, flows nicely into Americans at Rest and serves as a nice intro to Valentine.

I also like the description in Strange Man's cabin better when Arthur kills him.

 

Regarding Arthur turning from dishonorable to honorable, I don't think this should happen only when he finds out that he has tuberculosis and is going to die, becoming good just because you know you will die is just a lame excuse to redeem yourself and get a better ending.

 

In my opinion Arthur should start becoming honorable right after the mission "Blessed are the Peacemakers", as he goes through a near death experience but he still don't know that he will die later, and also because I like the reference to John's gravestone in 1911.

By the time he's diagnosed, he has high in honour in my game. Jimmy Brooks is killed in Chapter 2, Arthur's diagnosis is Chapter 5. Chapter 6 is when I usually stop outlaw activities outside of missions such as robbery and when I start helping people more.

I usually do outlaw activities up to "Blessed are the Peacemakers", like robbing trains, stagecoaches, etc. But I only kill those who fight back, I may be dishonorable until this point, but I'm not a complete asshole either.

I kill those who fight back, those who start shooting or ambush me, or witnesses that never listen. I don't kill innocent people if I can help it. I hate killing horses in ambushes or bounty hunter dogs but it has to be done.

This is basically what I do myself, I always help people in random events too, most of the time we earn something for it.

There's an open thread in the RDR1 section if you guys are interested. Like @AudaxTenebra said we figured out a rough mission order a while ago, but it's definitely not perfect, and lately we've been updating the list again. Regarding Chapter 6 and the conundrum of Delights of Van Horn, I believe it's meant to be placed much earlier in the chapter. In fact as the next Main Story mission after Just a Social Call.

 

Dutch's plan involving the Army, Dynamite, Railroads and the Oil Refinery begins to take shape even before A Rage Unleashed, as evidenced by the ending cutscene in Just a Social Call, where Dutch reads Cornwall's papers (that were retrieved by Micah, while Dutch and Arthur confronted Cornwall at the docks), and learns about Cornwall's connection to the army:

 

Dutch: "We just need a distraction. Buy us some time. It looks like Mr. Cornwall's company has signed a railroad contract with the army and they're also moving dynamite down from, well, the Annesburg mines to Saint Denis to resell. And there's bonds at his oil factory. Maybe there's a way to get them off our back and get the money that we need."

 

Dutch then proceeds to charge Micah and Bill with procuring the dynamite, and for Arthur to help them when he can, but first he asks Micah to speak in private about their plan.

 

Next time we see Micah (during Delights of Van Horn) he knows Dutch's plan from the conversation he had with Dutch after the ending of Just a Social Call.

At no point during Delights of Van Horn does Micah or Bill mention indians, because at this point in time, the indians aren't part of Dutch's plan, as they haven't been introduced yet.

 

This is what Micah has to say about the plan, during Delights of Van Horn:

 

Micah: "Dutch says we is to go on with plans to create a diversion. We gotta get some explosives to blow up the bridge. Keep the army out of here a few days." ... "We gotta confuse them one last time... then he and I will head to Blackwater, collect the money and help everyone leave."

 

As you can see, all of Micah's details about the plan are based on the information from Cornwall's papers from Just a Social Call. I do believe Micah would have mentioned the Indians, if he'd known about them, which he would have, if the Indian storyline or even just A Rage Unleashed would have been completed at this point.

 

At the start of A Rage Unleashed Dutch shares the first details of his plan (Make a distraction, get cash, go to New York, then Fiji / Taihiti / New Guinea) with Arthur. Then by good fortune Charles and Eagle Flies arrive, and Dutch's final missing piece falls into place.

During A Rage Unleashed Dutch has dialogue with Arthur, where he explains this:

 

Dutch: "That dynamite, the railroad contract with the army, it was all in those papers Micah found. I have a plan. You just have to trust me."

 

At the end of Delights of Van Horn Micah sends John off with the dynamite to blow up the bridge. I've also struggled with placing The Bridge to Nowhere because of this, but I believe it fits narratively and thematically best towards the end of the chapter, right after Favored Sons (as that seems to be Arthur's breaking point, when he loses faith in Dutch completely), before The King's Son.

That leaves John sitting around at Bacchus Bridge with the dynamite for quite a lot of time, but I can excuse this by imagining that he was spent the time hiding the dynamite (which makes sense, given as Dutch manages to procure some of it between Favored Sons and Bridge to Nowhere), and being informed by Abigail that she may have found Dutch's money stash (Dutch only informs Arthur, that he has procured it from the old Shady Belle camp during A Rage Unleashed).

 

So therefore I believe the chronological mission order for Chapter 6 should go a little something like this:

So this topic is mostly dead I think but I have been sick a long time and dealing with a wife with cancer so I never got to really dive in the way I wanted to with doing a chronological gameplay. But now I have some time and I'm very OCD so I'm trying to put together a document from this thread and other sources with an estimated mission order and an estimated timeline.

 

I've really found that I think one of the most interesting things that gets missed in a "timeline" sense is when Arthur says in "A Fisher of Men" that the gang was up in the snow for a "few weeks" (which I'm going to count as "two"). If we go with Hosea saying his bit about the weather in "May" in the opening dialogue, and the Blackwater robbery clipping being in a newspaper dated May that says it was "yesterday" - I think we end up with the gang not actually getting to Horseshoe Overlook until at least around May 14th. Pretty much every timeline I've seen puts the gang at Colter at the Overlook at least a week earlier, which doesn't go with Arthur's dialogue. Then "Polite Society", whenever you do that, would then have to be around May 28th at the earliest as the girls clearly say they've been cooped up at Overlook for "two weeks". Regardless, the gang seems to definitely not have left Overlook until sometime in June.

 

Of course, we have the Mayor's letters later on with one of them dated in May but I think we just have to ignore that and retcon it as the Mayor being an idiot or something because it makes NO sense to the earlier dialogues. The date on the second letter as "June" can be worked around.

 

Anyway, here is the document I'm working on, with commentary, for anyone who might want to add comments or contributions or alternate mission orders or timeline thoughts. Probably no one will because y'all have long moved on, but just in case. Still a work in much progress of course.

You may be aware of it but during "Eastward Bound", the game states its been "a couple of weeks" during the fade-out where it says "chapter 2 - horseshoe overlook" on the screen, backing up the girls saying "two weeks" during Polite Society

 Yep, but always good to have that backup notation thank you. it also reinforced doing Polite Society soon after arriving at Horseshoe in order for the Eastern Bound note and the dialogue from the girls to match up.  And yep, F cancer.
