I do the same 3-4 day vacation in Chapter 3 to Strawberry, but I do it earlier in the chapter just after Trelawny's stage coach as there's nothing urgent. This also gives Bill, Karen and Lenny time to make plans for the bank robbery. While there, I collect Holmes' debt, do Hector's three robberies, finish off the Appleseed Timber company mission strand and visit Watson's cabin if I haven't already (I usually do it on the way from visiting Flaco Hernandez in Chapter 2).

Hector's second robbery is linked with the Appleseed Timber Company as Arthur robs a stage carrying their payroll and I find it funny to help them one minute and rob their payroll the next lol. Plus it wouldn't make sense to rob payroll belonging to them if their mission strand is long done in Chapter 2 as they've cleared from site and moved on.

That is a very good point I had not thought about! I have always done all the timber company stuff much earlier. I will have to revise...

Is it possible to do the Appleseed Timber Company missions in chapter 3?

I skipped the Appleseed Timber Co. missions in chapter 2.  After Hector's second robbery, I when back to Appleseed Timber company and it was deserted.

I thought the Appleseed Timber Co. missions was timed event in Ch.2. Appleseed Timber Co. and Castor Ridge house builders are connected.

There is glitch going on with these timed events ( Appleseed Timber Co., Castor ridge house builders, Central Union Railroad Co.). If I do one mission, Skipped the next mission, and final mission disappears with the areas deserted.

I do the first one before meeting Micah at his camp near the end of Chapter 2, and the worker trapped under tree and wolves in Chapter 3. I'm the same with the Central Union Railroad. First one near the end of Chapter 2 and the next 2 in Chapter 3.

All the times I've played through, if I want to save Appleseed / Castor Ridge missions for later on, I have to absolutely AVOID going anywhere near either site as it starts to trigger events. And once triggered, they seem to run themselves out on some kind of timeline of their own. Or at least, that has been my experience.

Below are my updated lists for Chapter's II and III. Chapter III I have realized is probably the most difficult chapter for me personally and you can see why in the notes. Also, I'm curious what people think of my "Arthur's Vacation" idea at the end of Chapter III. It's something I have done on my most recent playthroughs and I really enjoy it. It allows me to experience more of the game than I would otherwise and I can even justify working it into the story.

Anyway...

Chapter II - NOTES

-Chapter Two is the second biggest chapter, and because of that it starts to get a bit convoluted here. This order may still be a work in progress as the placement of certain missions can be endlessly debated and a satisfying answer is not always clear.

-At the very beginning of this chapter, Hosea will tell Arthur about two potential leads: one involves the boys who have gone into town, and the other involves the Reverend, who has "found something at the train station." Because Hosea is not specific about who went into town and what they are doing, we can justify leaving "Americans at Rest" for another time. Hosea is more specific about Reverend Swanson at the train station, however, and there is no reason to leave him sitting around there for several days waiting for you to arrive. You'll find that I use this as a general rule for mission priority: if a character tells you to meet a specific person somewhere and maybe even notes a specific time, its best to follow up on that as soon as possible. If they are more vague about it, you can leave it up to interpretation.

-Originally I had "Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego" after "The First Shall be Last," because after the latter mission, there is a break in the narrative where Arthur has no other obligations to anyone or anything. However, after several playthroughs doing it this way, I found that it always felt a bit off... "Exit, Pursued" does not really add anything or have any impact to the story and almost feels like a tutorial mission, while "The First Shall be Last" kind of gets the ball rolling narratively. It just feels awkward to leave it sitting for so long. It's also worth mentioning that this mission unlocks "Spines of America," but it can sometimes take several days for this mission to open up. So playing it too late may risk messing up the order entirely while waiting for "Spines of America." Plus, walking around camp getting shouted at by Hosea for days on end can get quite annoying. "Hey Arthur!" "Hey Arthur!" "HeY aRtHuR!"

-"Good, Honest Snake Oil" is not a required mission to progress the story. However, it is necessary to complete in this chapter if one wants a good introduction into bounty hunting side missions. The best time to do it is early, preferably before "Americans at Rest," because at this point the gang has not caused any trouble in the area and thus, are not sought after by the law.

-"The Spines of America" and the Lily Millet's Money lending mission are done on the same day because both are in Emerald Ranch. This will limit the amount of backtracking you have to do. Note that the order of these two depends on whether you prefer to take the daytime option or nighttime option in "Spines." If you prefer the night option, do the money lending mission first as by the time the mission is over it is already very late at night.

-Interesting note: I originally had "Money Lending and Other Sins [III]" occur after "We Loved Once and True," but it turns out that the game will not allow this to happen. If you try to do it in the opposite order, Strauss will confront you after reading Mary's letter and the money lending mission will trigger automatically. Therefore this needs to be done the day following the other Chapter Two money lending missions.

-I like to play "A Quiet Time" after "We Loved Once and True" because of one line: while drunk in Valentine, Lenny asks Arthur why he never married, to which Arthur sadly replies, "no one would have me." Having played Mary Linton's mission previously, it creates a poignant moment that contrasts well with this otherwise hilarious mission.

-"Blessed are the Meek?" comes the very next day after "A Quiet Time." As much as Arthur dislikes Micah, at this point saving him before he swings is pretty much a priority.

-"The Sheep and the Goats" and "A Strange Kindness" occur on the same day, because after Cornwall and the Pinkertons corner the gang in Valentine, the pressure is on to leave the area immediately.

Chapter III - NOTES

-Chapter III is shorter than the previous chapter, but it putting it in a logical and cinematic order was MUCH trickier. I think what makes it so difficult is the fact that Dutch and other gang members are constantly telling you to go meet someone, making you feel obligated to do certain missions in a certain order, even if it is to the detriment of the narrative. Other times, the game seems to prompt you towards doing certain missions before others when said missions might be confusing if others have not been completed beforehand. I think the order above is probably the best solution to all of this, though it is not perfect. Let's dig deeper into the specifics.

-Immediately as the chapter opens up, you will hear Pearson and Sadie in the midst of a heated argument in camp. Naturally, you might want to go investigate. However, getting too close to the pair will trigger "Further Questions of Female Suffrage," which isn't a terrible opening mission, but Dutch's "The New South" works vastly better as an opening mission. You meet the Gray family who provide some exposition revealing their feud with the Braithwaite family, which ends up being the focal point of the chapter. They show you around area, pointing out key locations such as Rhodes and Caliga Hall, and even warn the player about the Lemoyne raiders. The mission concludes with a relaxing fishing trip alongside Dutch and Hosea. This mission has everything going for it in regards to being the perfect "opening" mission for the chapter. It's just odd that the game will naturally draw you toward Pearson and Sadie instead. My best advice would be to ignore the original bickering... chalk it up as background noise, and go straight to Dutch. After the mission, you will end up back in camp. Rather than going straight to Sadie an Pearson, take off to the left, call your horse, maybe do some hunting, then camp overnight in the woods and return the next day to begin "Further Questions of Female Suffrage."

-American Distillation needs to take place in the morning. No matter what time you start this mission, the game will automatically revert the clock to the morning after the mission.

-I originally had "An Honest Mistake" placed way later in the chapter. My reasoning was that, during the course of the mission, the law becomes aware of crime in the area, and may connect it to Dutch's gang, especially since it's another robbery on Cornwall's assets. But doing it early solves two problems: one, it prevents Molly O'Shea from sitting around under a tree calling Arthur for a week, and two, it clears some space up in the last half of the chapter to allow more focus on the Gray vs. Braithwaite Feud.

-After "The Course of True Love [III]," Abigail will more than likely approach Arthur as soon as he heads into camp to inform him that John and Hosea are currently waiting for him by the moonshine stash. At this point you're pretty much obligated to immediately start "Advertising, the New American Art." And that's okay, because it fits well here. Just make sure its sometime in the late afternoon/evening, as this mission will always end later in the night.

-After "Advertising," Dutch will instruct Arthur to meet Hosea at the Braithwaite's, and will also say that he has sent Sean McGuire as well. Therefore, "The Fine Joys of Tobacco" mission should be done next day. Feel free to spend the earlier parts of the day hunting/fishing/doing side missions, because like "Advertising," this mission will always end at night. It's worth mentioning that Dutch will also instruct Arthur to meet John and Javier at the Gray's, but that mission, "Horse Flesh for Dinner," isn't even available until after "The Fine Joys of Tobacco" is completed. I consider Dutch's instructions on this to be more of a "do it when you can," thing rather than an immediate obligation.

-Originally I had "Magicians for Sport" before "Fine Joys," but I discovered that after "Magicians," the game will automatically skip to the next morning and Arthur will be in Rhodes. I wonder why Arthur would go to Rhodes, and I figure a good reason would be to collect the debt from Gwyn Hughes. Make sure to speak with Strauss at a point prior so this money lending mission is available. Then, straight to "Horse Flesh for Dinner."

-The rest is pretty straight forward, but I would like to point out that immediately after "Blessed are the Peacemakers," is probably the best time (and last chance narratively) to explore/do tasks in Strawberry, Big Valley and the Grizzlies West. If you're trying to complete as much of the game as possible as Arthur, this is your chance. Typically, I do the money lending mission for Winton Holmes and the Joshua Brown bounty hunting mission and well as the general store side business. You also have the Legendary Buck and a nearby trapper to sell the pelt too. Then, I head up into Grizzlies West (make sure you pack some warm clothes!), complete some treasure hunts and tame the White Arabian Horse. Taming this horse is necessary if you want to get both the Legendary White Bison and the Legendary Sockeye Salmon. Load one onto your main horse and the other onto the White Arabian. Then I do the Flaco Hernandez gunslinger mission, and head back down the mountain and make my way back to camp. Hit up the trapper near Riggs Station, sell the bison pelt, then ship off the Sockeye Salmon. Take the White Arabian to the stable near Strawberry, keep it or sell it, then head back to camp and pick up the Legendary Chain Pickerel on your way back. For me, this all takes about a week in-game time. You may wonder why Arthur would return to Strawberry after shooting up the place with Micah, or even why he would go back into the mountains. I figure long enough time has passed since "Blessed are the Meek?" that its safe to return, and Arthur's appearance should be different anyway. Now that he's back on his feet after nearly dying at the hands of the O'Driscoll's, maybe Arthur wants to take a relaxing hunting/fishing trip in the mountains before returning to work. The guy deserves a vacation, right?

Wow, so much amazing detail and thought you have put into all of this! I am taking SO many notes.  Especially for Chapter 3 you have some things in there I really have not considered before and I love it! I do also very much love the idea of the Arthur "vacation" there. I am always looking for more places to do "free roam" without feeling like the main quests are pushing at me. I wish in general that Devs would give more 'pauses' for people to just explore and roam without having quests that feel important to get done hanging over you. Same issue I have with the Horizon series. You feel like doing a side quest is going to lead to the end of the whole damn world because you shouldn't be wasting a minute! Anyway, THANK YOU so much for putting all of this together. It is so very helpful!

You and Psycho18 have both especially given me so much rich detail and thoughtfulness about all the RP and mission order. I don't do vids anymore just because it is hard with my disability issues, but I've been doing an expanded written "Arthur's Journal" (taken up by John later) that I'm really trying to get the best timeline put together for. Just for my own fun, but it gives me a lovely excuse to really think about and explore so many aspects of the game I haven't before.

Thank you! It's clear to me that Rockstar structures the missions in their games like they do in order to create a sort of "illusion of choice," so that the player feels like they are more in control of the narrative. However, that's all it is... an illusion. It really feels like Rockstar had an intended order for these missions, and it's odd when they seem to direct you towards one mission but another available mission would flow with the narrative so much better (see "A New South" and "Further Questions of Female Suffrage"). I kind of wish they just made the story missions linear while keeping everything else player's choice, but then we wouldn't be able to have these interpreting discussions.

As far as "pauses" in the narrative, I agree that we could use more to allow us to explore freely while also not feeling rushed by the story. This becomes more of a problem as the game progresses with later chapters burdened by a heightened sense of urgency, but I have managed to identify a few "pauses" and I' considering updating the list to include mention of said "pauses" so that player's know when they can relax a bit and do some side stuff.

Also, love the idea of an expanded Arthur's Journal! If you ever get around to posting it I'd be interested in taking a look!

I'd definitely be interested in seeing where you think good "pauses" could be stuck in. I do try to take a small one in my current order of First Shall Be Last, Polite Society, Bruised Ego. I don't go back with Hosea and wander around for a day or so there, picking up a few side missions and random encounters. But I always feel the weight of that impending train robbery, bah. And then I try to leave Micah for as long as I can stand LOL.

Soooo. I was working on Arthur's expanded Journal and I really love to maximize getting all the dialogue I can in the game. But you know, I just cannot bring myself to spare that first O'Driscoll even though I know if I do there is an extra scene at the start of the gunfight in Old Friends. I just feel like Arthur would NOT let him go, on the very slim chance he might inform Colm of what happened there and that he'd seen Dutch. Because that would put the whole gang in huge danger. Argggh. But I hate missing the scene.

Well, I'm going to RP that Arthur thinks the guy is so near death as it doesn't matter after the horrid beating he's taken. Like why bother killing him the rest of the way when he should suffer for attacking him. Especially after they find Sadie. I guess that's the best I can do to get the scene. Even though I want to kill that damn O'Driscoll immediately!

Totally agree about the O'Driscoll in the barn. I used to spare him often in playthroughs and shoot him later in Old Friends, but now I never spare him.  He mentions a camp full of O'Driscolls nearby and he knows the VDL gang are now in the area, so killing him stops him running his mouth. Choking him out might be extreme, but he's an O'Driscoll and I see it as Arthur protecting his family.

I am so frustrated right now. So I have my play order for Chapter Two finally like I want it, with all the great advice and help here, and I wanted to start over fresh from right after Chapter One.

And there is a glitch. On BOTH PS5 and PC versions. Even starting from a fresh game all the way back to game start with a fresh install.

The stupid Pearson rabbit request for the Scout Jacket is bugged. Not that I can't get the scenario to pop. (Pearson, behind the table, drinking beer & whistling.) But when you approach him, BOTH dialogue options are greyed out instead of only the "Greet" being available to get his request. I even loaded someone else's beginning chapter two save just to check and it happened with that one too.

I've always gotten it day one before doing Without Sin. Or day two if I forget. Now I get the same glitch on any day I try it. Even loading up saves that are well into chapter two with quite a few missions. Greyed out dialogue option, can't select it, can't get the item request. From what I can tell, the last time I got it was two updates ago so I wonder if it was broken in one of those updates.

I'm sooooo mad. Because the only fresh save I have immediately at the start of Chapter Two with the Pearson request doesn't have Micah's revolver. And I want that for my RP. Grrrrrrr. I guess I can use someone else's save that has it but it really bugs when when something gets broken in the game after five years!!!

Pearson rabbit request only pops up in the morning. That's want I seen. It doesn't pop up after 12:30 pm.

This what I do.

Exit Pursued By a Bruised Ego. In mission, Arthur hunt a rabbit. Return to camp with Hosea at 9:30 am.

Save Game. Walk around, Talk, Chores, Eat, Drink etc.

At 10:30 am, Stand at the poker table, and watch Pearson. When Pearson stops to drink at small table. Run to Pearson and Talk.

Reload the game if Susan or Swanson (Maybe Kieren too, if Paying A Social Call is completed before Exits) tries to talk to Arthur many times.

Always works for me.  You probably trying to talk to Pearson very late in the day.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but I have no issue getting the request scenario to pop. In the morning. Between 10:30 and 11:30AM. I have it down to a science. Been doing it for years. Getting Person to do his little routine to get behind the table, drink his beer & whistle isn't the issue. The issue is that now, since the last update - or possibly two - unlike previous many dozens of times, the "greet" option to prompt the rabbit request is greyed out along with the "antagonize" whereas with the item request normally (as with all of them) only has the antagonize option grayed out and you can click on the "greet" o stary the request. On both PS5 and PC.

But thanks for trying to help. Appreciate it.

If you got the physical version of the game I strongly suggest you to play on Version 1.00 without installing its updates, sure you can't use the LeMat Revolver, the M1899 Pistol and the Evans Repeater Carbine, among a few extra horses, missions and what not, but in exchange everything that was already in its original version works properly without exceptions.

Screw that. 1.0 is terrible.

For the same reason you don't run window xp, it lacks all the updates.

And who said the updates made this game better? I got nearly 5 years of experience with this game and I know exactly what each update did to it based on my very own testings and feedback from many other players here in GTAForums, but just in case you didn't keep up with us you can check my topic and gain some knowledge on the matter before talking about what you don't know.

do you think Arthur should encounter Murfee Brood before chapter 6?

Hm... Bill says he robbed a house in Roanoke Ridge as soon as Chapter 3 himself, but I'd wait until Chapter 4 at least before exploring this county and meeting the Murfrees yourself, the way Arthur asks Charles to go with him to take over Beaver Hollow in "That's Murfree Country" is like he knows how dangerous they are and this implies that he met them before, maybe not at Beaver Hollow itself, since this would be extremely dangerous, but at least in the camps that they usually spawn robbing two people that they killed and their random ambushes/events.

This is how I would pretend to unlock RDR2's counties being you:

Chapter 2: Big Valley, Grizzlies West, Grizzlies East, The Heartlands and Cumberland Forest.

Chapter 3: Scarlett Meadows and Bluewater Marsh.

Chapter 4: Roanoke Ridge and Bayou Nwa.

Chapter 5: Guarma.

You can leave Bluewater Marsh to Chapter 4 and Roanoke Ridge to Chapter 6 instead if you want to, but this is pretty much how you can do it in a lore friendly way.

I always encounter them as early as Chapter 2 when selling the bear pelt to the trapper as they usually have a camp nearby where they're looting two dead bodies.

In my playthrough, Arthur always meets Murfee Brood 1-2 times in chapter 4. In chapter 4, I kind of go over the borders of Bayou Nwa, Bluewater marsh, and Scarlett Meadows by accident. When I run into the Murfees, it usually set up camp around SW corner of Roanoke Ridge when it is getting dark. I wasn't paying attention. Too busy collecting plants, fishing, hunting, or searching for Exotics Orchids and Exotic animals.

Story wise, it is ok for Arthur to meet the Murfees 1-2 times before chapter 6. In chapter 6, Arthur wants Charles to go with him to take over Beaver Hollow.

For me, it will be like this.

Chapter 2:  Big Valley, Grizzlies West/East, The Heartlands, and Cumberland Forest

Chapter 3:  Lemoyne, Scarlett Meadows, Bluewater Marsh.

Chapter 4: Bayou Nwa, half of southern part of Roanoke Ridge ( not too far north).

Chapter 5: Guarma

Chapter 6: Full Roanoke Ridge

I only avoid places in game if they're to be introduced in a later mission. I don't visit Rhodes before Chapter 3 and Saint Denis before Chapter 4.

Annesburg and Van Horn aren't introduced in game during a mission and there's nothing in Arthur's dialogue that indicates that he's new to both places during Chapter 6. I don't however make it a habit of visiting both too often before Chapter 6. I'll go to Van Horn if I want to visit a fence early before Spines of America.

During Chapter 4 it's free reins everywhere as it is the last chapter where a new town/city is introduced in game. Chapter 4 is when I finished off the gunslinger missions.

I only go to Annesburg in Chapter 6.

In Chapter 4, I go outside of Van Horn south entrance only.  Never enter it.

The professor in Saint Denis wants Arthur to steal a moonshine wagon very close Van Horn.

Arthur chases a coach halfway to Van Horn to get Mary's Mother Brooch back in Chapter 4.

If I been halfway to Van Horn ready, I usually go rob Van Horn mansion in Chapter 4. That's it.

I try to avoid Annesburg, Van Horn, NE Roanoke Ridge in Chapter 4.

Wtf? Arthur don't even leave Bayou Nwa when chasing Ashton, let alone getting near Van Horn in Roanoke Ridge lol, and the moonshine wagon robbery is in Bluewater Marsh, near Black Belle's shack.

Annesburg bores me and is a pain in the backside to get in and out, especially north of the town, so I tend to avoid it unless a mission is there/takes me there.

I do love Van Horn though as the smallest thing can end up with Arthur or John killing the whole town haha.

I always rob the mansion the first time I visit Van Horn.

What's up guys.. been a while. Haven't looked at this thread for about a year and a half and can't believe it's still going. Back then it seemed like we got a definitive order pretty much nailed down (in terms of making the most sense chronologically and dialogue wise). Has anything changed? Jimmy do you have a more up to date order? Planning on a new playthrough soon as I have a new PSN account so will be going for the platinum a second time.. wish me luck!🤣

That's a damn shame if true. Like you too I used to have that Pearson rabbit request trigger down to a tee. I'd hang around camp on Day 1 before doing any missions. Trigger all the camp interactions/conversations.. go out and hunt a deer and get a 3 star pelt. Come back.. and soon after you'd be able to walk straight up to him. Usually by around 10:30-11:00am in-game. Worked like a charm. Planning a new playthrough soon so will be annoyed if this is no longer achievable because I LOVE the jacket you get from it. Hate how Rockstar have seemingly neglected this game and made it worse with each and every passing update.
