It been a long time since I played this game. I probably get back into playing next month. I am not sure when Mary's letter arrive , I do remember that Mary-Beth tells Arthur about Mary in Valentine after Paying a Social Call and Exit pursued by a Bruised ego.

After Paying Social Call and Exit pursued by a Bruised Ego, Susan will talk about Mary. I pretty sure the letter arrive then. I don't read the letter until after Spines of America. I visit Mary after Spines of America and Blessed are the Meek.

As for, Susan approaches Arthur to tell him about Hosea went Emerald Ranch. I get this after Arthur return to camp after hunting rabbits for Pearson's camp request and after Exits pursued by a bruised ego.

Same here! Keep meaning to pick it back up with another playthrough but never seem to find the time. Thanks for the help mate, appreciate it 👍

I have a question about when people think it is appropriate to go fishing as Arthur away from the mission strands? Going after the legendary fish, challenges etc. Whenever fishing is in a mission it feels like there is some sort of tutorial involved such as Javier giving you crickets for bait. So should Arthur stay away from fishing until after all tutorial elements are completed?

I fish when I feel like it.  I usually fish after these missions.

In Chapter 2, I usually go fishing after Fisher of Men. I fish for smaller fishes. Only bait I have is cheese, bread, and corn.

In Chapter 3, New south gives you either a river/lake lure.  Javier gives you crickets.  Fish for bigger fish. Kieran introduces legendary fishes, but no bait yet. After fishing with Kieran, I visit Fisher of Fish guy. To receive the Legendary fish map.

In Chapters 4 and 6, Hunting with Pearson will receive cray fish. I usually go Lekay bait shop in the swamp to buy lots of bait. Then I go out fishing bigger fishes all over the map (No New Austin with Arthur 😪). Then I follow the legendary fish map that Arthur received from the Fisher of Fish Guy in Order. Arthur gets  7 Legendary fishes.

In Epilogue, John will get 6 legendary fishes. Only John can meet the Fisher of fish guy for  the 2nd meeting. I will finish hunting, collecting, and fishing after the story  in New Austin and all over the map.

This is almost exactly what I do as well, although I go fishing before Fisher of Men, because I enjoy fishing.  I got the sense that Arthur knew enough about fishing to at least teach Jack the basics, so it makes sense to me.

Psycho, I bet you meant the Lagras bait shop, rather than Lakay (their temporary camp in the swamps)  😉

Got two questions regarding Chapter 2. Firstly at what point does Mary’s letter arrive? Is it after ‘Paying A Social Call’ is completed and does anyone actually tell Arthur about it or does he just discover it himself? Second is when Grimshaw approaches Arthur to tell him to meet up with Hosea at Emerald Ranch, does this always happen after ‘Paying A Social Call’ is completed aswell?

The letter itself appears by completing a combination of both Paying A Social Call and Money Lending And Other Sins II (the actual returning of 1 or more debts to Strauss) in any order. As @Psycho18 mentioned the letter also mentions that Mary has seen the girls in town meaning that Polite Society must have been done beforehand even though it is not required to unlock the letter.

Grimshaw never specifically mentions the letter itself. She says "one of the girls saw that Mary Linton sniffing about". I tested it out a while back and she only starts saying this once Paying A Social Call has been completed even if Money Lending And Other Sins II hasn't also been done yet.

It could be taken:-

  • Mary saw the girls then went and found the camp and has dropped the letter off there
  • Mary saw the girls a couple of times and gave one of the girls the letter in town when she saw them
  • Mary saw the girls and later left the letter at the post office knowing it would be collected by one of the gang

The third seems like the most likely for me because later on in Chapter 6 when Tilly gives Arthur the goodbye letter she says "A letter came for you. I know it's from that Mary" which she sounds like she is assuming and in the letter it says "I don't imagine you will receive this letter but nonetheless I must send it" pretty much confirming Mary sends them via post office.

By "sniffing about" it's likely that Grimshaw was just referring to the girls bumping into Mary in town and then gossiping about it when they got back to camp.

Regarding Spines Of America (meeting Hosea at Emerald Ranch) - No that can be done at any time after Exit Pursued has been completed and then Grimshaw will start approaching Arthur about it.

Thanks @jimmyoneshot I usually leave the letter until returning back to camp after Blessed Are The Meek. By that point the cutscene with Strauss always happens where he forces Arthur to collect the debt from Thomas Downes. Everything just seems to fit really well here in terms of how Arthur would be feeling, having reluctantly helped Micah shoot up the whole town of Strawberry then finding out his ex is back, only to have Strauss nagging him about debts as soon as he gets back and he ends up taking all this built up frustration out on Downes. He even seems lost in his thoughts when Strauss approaches him when he says ‘Sorry I was miles away’. At that point his head was all over the place and it really was a combination of those events that contributed to his excessive beating of Downes and ultimately contracting TB.

Great ideas!!!! Never thought about collecting debt Thomas Downes later after reading Mary's letter and Blessed Are The Meek. Very Interesting 🤔!!! I might have to try it out. If Arthur contracts TB early chapter 2, then there is a huge gap between chapter 2 and Arthur's coughing in chapter 4. Maybe collect debt from Thomas Downes closer to the start of chapter 3 will short the gap.

Plus, I usually collect the debt from Mr. Wrobel after Arthur gets out of jail in Quiet Time. Arthur is not feeling well. So, go beat up Mr. Wrobel and take a taste of Mr. Worbel's food cooking in the pot. When Arthur gets back to camp, place money in cash box, use the camp upgrade book. Arthur will taste some of the stew in the pot and throw the spoon back into the pot. By, throw the spoon back into pot during the cutscene, it reminds me that collecting Mr. Wrobel's debt could be in the morning with the stew is day old, no favor, or Arthur is not hungry from drinking too much the night before.

This is the order I might try.

Sean's Party

Collect Debt's from Lilly Millet and Chick Matthews

Paying a Social Call

Good Honest, Snake Oil

A Quiet Time-  I like this dialogue. Arthur and Dutch talk about the Bonds they stole in chapter 1.

Collect Debt from Mr. Wrobel

Exit Pursued By a Bruised Ego-  I like this dialogue. Arthur needs to get away from the camp.  Arthur and Hosea talk about the Bonds they stole, Arthur stay away from the saloon (American at Rest and A Quiet Time), Micah is in jail and Micah's code (Micah has no gang code).

Spines of America

Read Mary's letter

Blessed are the Meek

Collect the Thomas Downes Debt- Arthur Contracting TB.

Meet Mary.

Pouring Forth Oil 1-3

Mrs. Downes shows up in camp- Gives the Debt. It is a shorter gap between beat up Mr. Downes and him dying.  She forced to give the money after Thomas Downes dies.

Has anyone else tried putting First Shall Be Last on the same day as Americans at Rest? That’s how I’ve been doing it the past couple of playthroughs. My reasoning:

Spoiler
  • The biggest issue I have with At Rest is what to do after it. Saving Swanson just doesn’t feel right given the urgency of the Sean situation, and there are no other significant distractions. Flatneck Station isn’t even en route to Blackwater, so there’s no reason (in my opinion) to postpone Sean’s rescue in favour of Swanson’s.
  • I strongly feel that the intended thing to do after Without Sin is to spend the night in camp. When you complete the mission, the sun is setting, Dutch is playing opera, and it just feels right to stay in camp rather than head to Blackwater immediately. But it makes no sense to stay in camp after saving Swanson if Sean is still out there - or it doesn’t feel right, anyway.
  • There is plenty of time to fit both in the same day. At Rest is finished by 11am/12pm at the latest. I ride down to the river when Dutch tells Arthur to get cleaned up, since your horse is always dirty at this point too. Then I head towards Blackwater. Even with interacting with random encounters, I still make it there comfortably for 3/4pm.
  • TFSBL pauses time at 5pm, so there are no time-related issues there. Plus, it avoids the awkward fast-forwarding of time that occurs if you play the mission in the morning, as you cross back into New Hanover. I always find this very jarring if I wait until the following day to play TFSBL, since the sun is visibly accelerating to make it night for the party.
  • The only issue I see is the other gang members changing clothes and having a tent set up. I don’t mind either since (a) clothes have been shown to be inconsistent (and they may havebeen changed because they got dirty during At Rest) and (b) I think the tent is just a generic campsite model, so doesn’t indicate the boys have necessarily camped overnight.

Of course, this changes absolutely nothing overall, since it’s literally just moving a mission from being standalone to being on the previous day. Still, this is my new favourite opening to Chapter 2:

Spoiler

<Spend time in camp, hunt, explore etc>
Who is Not Without Sin?

Americans at Rest

The First Shall be Last

<Sean’s Party>

Very similar to how I play it!

I always put First Shall Be Last on the first day, in the afternoon (after doing chores and hunting and chatting with folk in the morning).   I like this for many reasons.  Seems like the most important thing at the time - Swanson is known for getting into trouble, and the guys are fine in Valentine.    And it gets it out of the way.   I figure it needs to be done before the party, as Swanson is there (and we never see him come back to camp any other time until Arthur fetches him).

I do Americans at Rest on the second day in the afternoon (after spending the morning hunting, etc).  I enjoy the interaction with Dutch & Molly, when he tells Arthur to get out there after Arthur teases them about their "romance", which is for me what finally gets Arthur setting off for Valentine to see what's up.   After getting a bath at the hotel, I ride off and camp out between Valentine and Blackwater.  Like you, I don't think anything should come between Americans and rescuing Sean.   It is just too important.

Like this for me:

Spoiler

<Spend time in camp, hunt, explore etc>
Who is Not Without Sin?
- - - - -

Fishing? Aint got no time for no damn fishing.

You are now wanted in at least 3 states and the pinkertons are hot on your trail.

You need to make some cash and get the f*ck out of town, quick!

After my little trip with Jack, Arthur never touches a fishing pole again.

Anyone else struggle to place ‘An Honest Mistake’ in Chapter 3? It doesn’t seem right to do this too early given Arthur’s original lead was to look into the Gray’s so Course Of True Love I,II & III, Further Questions strand would definitely come before it. Uncle also mentions that he’s been scouting the job for ‘weeks’ which wouldn’t make sense as once Chapter 3 starts the gang have only been there for a few days. When he brings up the fact Arthur and Bill have been ‘playing lawmen’ this also seems to imply the events of ‘American Distillation but could also be argued he’s referring to Arthur helping catch the Anderson Boys in ‘New South’. But there are also contradictions to doing it later on. When talking about how Uncle found the lead Bill says ‘we’ve only been down here five minutes and you’ve already found a lead’ or something similar to that. Also I know it’s a small detail but I absolutely hate doing this mission with Arthur wearing the deputy badge, it just wouldn’t make sense for him to do that. So when do you guys usually fit it in?

I believe that the badge comes off when doing/after Advertising, the New American Art. Which makes sense because Arthur doesn't want to be going to Braithwaite Manor wearing that badge!

So if you follow the Gray/Deputy missions up to this point (New South, Distillation and Course of True Love) then mix in some of the other available missions/activities like Further Suffrage, Strauss's debts etc plus the brief time lapse after the chapter starts, then you could probably argue that they have been there a couple of weeks. Which would give Uncle time to get the lead and give you time to get rid of the badge.

The "down here five minutes" bit is subjective in my opinion. If Arthur's kept himself busy, that time will have flown by for him.

The fact that Sadie's mission is called Further Questions of Female Suffrage makes me feel more and more that this has to be done after The Course of True Love III seeing as that is about female suffrage. Is that something that people agree on?

I still don't like leaving Sadie and Pearson arguing in camp but I suppose the best way around this would be to do The New South then head straight out of camp (trying to avoid going near Pearson's wagon) to do The Course of True Love I-III consecutively and then return to camp for Further Questions. I think that can work.

Yeah totally agree, feel like the same also applies to ‘Spines Of America’ which the title of the missions suggests it should be completed during the day and not night, otherwise it just doesn’t make sense. I always do New South and try and block out their argument as background noise. Then when Arthur comes back and hears them still arguing that’s when he decides to step in and intervene 😂

It's good to see that this forum is still going strong. Here's a list I've come up with that is for players that want a slower paced play-through that's not rushed. Please let me know if there's any major plot holes that don't add up. Obviously some orders are up to player opinion. Each line is a new day.

CHAPTER 1

-Outlaws from the West-

-Enter, Pursued by a Memory-

-The Aftermath of Genesis-/-Old Friends-

-Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?-

-Eastward Bound-

CHAPTER 2

-Americans at Rest- (Bathe and sleep in Valentine Hotel)

<Castor's Ridge>/<Appleseed Timber Co.> (Camp near Strawberry Stables after you lead lost man to Strawberry)

-The First Shall be Last-/<Sean's Party> (Sleep until Noon. Swanson goes on his drunken bender)

-Polite Society, Valentine Style-/<Castor's Ridge Shootout> (Start after 1pm. I walk my butt to camp and arrive around nightfall.)

-Money Lending and Other Sins 1/$Money Lending-Wrobel$

<Trapper>/-Who is Not without Sin- (Swanson has been gone for a few days since the party so after the trapper, I pass by Flatneck Station)

$Money Lending-Chick Matthews$/Save Valentine Woman trapped under horse/-Good, Honest, Snake Oil- (Sleep in Valentine Hotel)

<Gunsmith>/?A Test of Faith? (While Hunting you run into stranger)

-Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego-

-Hunt Legendary Grizzly Bear-/<Trapper> (Camp near Ocreigh's Run/I choose to stick around and hunt)

<Save Bill from Bounty Hunters with Javier> (This always triggers when returning to camp from hunting trip north of Cornwall Oil Factory)

-Charles-Hunting- (Usually check out the abandoned oil derrick after if you want dinosaur piece)

-Paying a Social Call- (I camp out near Cornwall Oil Factory by railroad tracks after. Gives good story on why Arthur knows about oil wagons and near Emerald Ranch)

$Money Lending-Lilly Millet$/-A Quiet Time- (Collect debt and explains Dutch's clothes change if you want that since it's the next day)

<Gunsmith>/<Castor's Ridge Homestead>/<Valentine Doctor's Office Robbery> (I leave town and then wait until night to come in through back way for robbery)

<Appleseed Timber Co.> (I kill the wolves, camp near Strawberry stables to collect the lumber the next day)

<Collect Lumber>/<Castor's Ridge Homestead>/Blessed are the Meek? (I start mission around nightfall. Return to camp in morning. Grimshaw talks about Hosea and Mary)

-A Letter From Mary cutscene-/$Money Lending-Thomas Downes$

<Javier-Homestead Robbery> (While you were in West Elizabeth with Micah, Javier got information on Chez Porter in Valentine)

-John-Pouring Forth Oil 1-/-Pouring Forth Oil 2- (I usually steal the wagon around dark)

-Hosea-The Spines of America- (Hosea's been selling the valuables you donated for camp funds at Emerald Ranch. Time to check-in/Day Time/Go to Valentine after)

<Stables, Gunsmith, Shave at Barber> (Buy better saddles, upgrade guns, look clean for Mary)/-We Loved Once and True 1- (Probably unpopular but I see Mary in evening which is why the woman pulls a gun when answering door. Late caller/I find Jamie in the morning on mountaintop/Sleep in Valentine Hotel)

-Pouring Forth Oil 3-/-A Fisher of Men- (John has finished his end of the train job and you have finished yours)

-Pouring Forth Oil 4- (The mission starts at night and ends in morning)

<Fence> (Sell all the valuables stolen since Spines and Train Job)

<Castor's Ridge Homestead Collection>/-An American Pastoral Scene- (I usually buy clothes at Wallace Station then return to camp)

-Valentine Bounty-Ellie Ann Swan-

-The Sheep and the Goats-

-A Strange Kindness- (I start after midnight because when you arrive in Dewberry Creek near morning, the girl says her father was taken last night)

CHAPTER 3

-The New South-

-Further Questions of Female Suffrage-

-Javier-Fishing-

-American Distillation-

-Sean-Homestead Robbery-/<Save Girl and take her to Lagras while on your way to Emerald Fence to sell Gold Ingot>

-Kieran-Fishing-/Money Lending and Other Sins 2-

-The Course of True Love 2-/-Advertising, the New American Art- (Dialogue after with Dutch and Micah about inbred telling of Romeo and Juliet fits well)

$Money Lending-Gwyn Hughes$/-The Fine Joys of Tobacco

<Fishing>

-Horse Flesh for Dinner-

-Preaching Forgiveness as He went-

<Hunting> (I find a Lemoyne Raiders Camp by the A in ScArlett Meadows on the map)

-Friends in Very Low Places-

-Sean-Coach Robbery-

-Sodom, Back to Gomorrah-

?No Good Deed?/<Blackjack>

<Alden-North Scarlett Meadows Coach Robbery>/<Hunting>

<Fishing>/<Lemoyne Raiders Camp (Abandoned Church outside Shady Belle. Always bothered me having it occupied when moving to Shady Belle later)

-Bill-Coach Robbery- (I put this hear because Bill says he robbed a house in Roanoke an a soldier in the swamps. Gives him a few days after the Valentine Bank job)

$Money Lending-Winton Holmes$

<Victor-Fort Riggs Coach Robbery> (Return to Camp after)

-Blessed are the Peacemakers-

-A Short Walk in a Pretty Town-/-Blood Feuds, Ancient and Modern-

This mightve been discussed before, but how would the collectibles be tied into a playthrough? Dreamcatchers, dino bones and rock carvings. Some of them are quite far out of the way.

Also, the nine gravesites are required for the 100%. Would they make sense to get lore-wise?

It's a tricky thing trying to tie stuff like this into a playthrough from a chronological perspective. Chapter 2 and 3 is when I do a lot of stuff like this because there feels like there's more of a relaxed pace to the game in these chapters which allows for breaking away and exploring for things like this. But from a chronological perspective it needs head canyoning. Whereas I am just easily distracted and just go off on adventures! 😂

There's also the fact that certain things can't be completed until the epilogues which makes me wonder if this sort of stuff should be left for post game? Unless it's only available for completion in the main chapters that is.

Speaking of which, does anyone have a list of things that can only be completed in the main chapters and what can only be completed in the epilogues?

Arthur is a explorer and adventurer.  You can collect collectibles at anytime. In Chapters 2-3, Arthur will get yelled at by Dutch and Susan if Arthur stay in the camp for very long time. They will ask, "Why are hanging around the camp, you a man of action".  I start collecting, hunting, or fishing when Arthur gets yell at or if the missions ends far away from camp.

Dreamcatchers- Chapters 4-6, after Arthur helps the Indians. John doesn't help the Indians.

Rock Carvings- Started in chapter 2 with Arthur after meeting with Sinclair. Collect when traveling around in different regions in each chapter. Finish with Arthur in chapter 6. Meet Sinclair after Course of True Love, helping the kids escape on train.

Dino Bones/Place of Interests- chapter 3-6 as Arthur. John will finish. Start collecting after Preaching Forgiveness. Arthur will get introduced to the Abandoned Church in Lemoyne which is a Place of Interests. Some Dino bones are very near to POI. I usually place these two collectibles together.

Gravesites/ visit Campsites- John will visits these before American Venom. Remember fallen gang members before killing Micah.

I have moved onto Chapter 4 and have a question about Jack's party. Has anyone ever encountered Tilly there?

Although the game points you in the direction of finding Bronte to get Jack back, I decided to do No, No and Thrice No first before actually visiting Bronte. But when I was at Jack's return party there was no sign of Tilly. Thought that was a bit strange as the game usually accounts for the variables like that.

If you've done No, No and Thrice No she will be inside and at the back of the house. She just stands there looking out the back window at the bottom of the stairs the whole time.

Thanks @jimmyoneshot I usually leave the letter until returning back to camp after Blessed Are The Meek. By that point the cutscene with Strauss always happens where he forces Arthur to collect the debt from Thomas Downes.

Out of interest does any one know what the exact pre-requisite is for triggering this Cutscene?

Not having completed Money Lending and Other Sins III when you read Mary’s letter is clearly one, but are there others? Do you have to have done all three of the other debts (Wrobel, Mathews and Millet) for example, or any other missions?

This may help you people fitting Pearson's naval compass into your chronological order lists since you don't have to go out of your way to Braithwaite Manor dock to find it anymore, skip to 11:33.

So I have just done A Fine Night of Debauchery in Chapter 4 and have a couple of observations on this one.

First, when I met up with Trelawny at the tailors, Arthur says something along the lines of "Are we still doing this?". Is this an indication that the priorities have changed for the gang when doing this? A focus on the final bank mission perhaps?

Second, during the poker game with Desmond Blythe, they discuss Leviticus Cornwall and Arthur says that he recently had a tour of his facilities in New Hanover which I believe points to American Fathers needing to be completed before this. I haven't actually done AF yet so this appears to be set dialogue.

The letter appears after you have completed Social Call and Money Lending 2. The cutscene itself becomes available if you read the letter 12 hours or more after Money Lending 2. Only 1 debt is required.

You're right it's a set line. There's always been a few possibilities on this one:-

  • Arthur could be referring to stealing the oil wagon in Pouring Forth Oil 2
  • He could be referring to the fight with Cornwall's men in Valentine
  • He could be referring to chasing Cornwall's men from the Central Union Railroad company as that is in New Hannover
  • He could be referring to American Fathers 2 as you said

The issue with the last one for me realism wise is that after Arthur wakes up from the party at the Mayor's mansion Dutch gives him a couple of leads and tells him that Trelawny is waiting for him at the tailors in Saint Denis i.e. the start of Fine Night Of Debauchery and when we get there Trelawny is indeed there waiting and it turns out so are Strauss and Javier meaning the whole thing is prearranged.

And seeing as American Fathers 2 requires you to do American Fathers 1 and then wait a day or 2 before American Fathers 2 appears it means you'd have to leave Trelawny/Strauss/Javier waiting all that time.

I think the 2nd one is the most likely because that is the only one that DEFINITELY happens in the story as the rest are either optional or may not have happened yet. After all the question during the card game is if Arthur knows Cornwall and Arthur says "We've crossed paths. I was lucky enough to tour an operation of his in New Hannover" and during the Valentine fight Cornwall is there so it sort of fits.

Horsemen, Apocalypses observation. Although not immediately available for me after The Gilded Cage, the conversation with Sadie at the start sounds like it should occur very soon after this mission as Arthur says he just saw Bill at the party. Maybe a good mission to do in between the first and second part of American Fathers.

She'll be inside of the manor. Still, no dialogue whatsoever, this makes me think that *canonically* she has to be rescued after the party.

Yes I agree.

After Urban Pleasures is a good time for American Fathers 2 as Dutch and Lenny go back to camp all roughed up after it and when you get back to camp they look fine like some time has passed so it makes sense do do something in the meantime. American Fathers 2 takes you overnight to the next day so it fits well.

This is my usual order for Chapter 4 :-

- The Joys Of Civilization
- Angelo Bronte A Man Of Honor
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- < Fatherhood and Other Dreams 1 >
- < Help A Brother Out >
- < Fatherhood And Other Dreams 2 >
- < Uncle - Rustling >
- ( Camp until noon )
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- No, No and Thrice No
- < Charles - Bank Robbery >
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ( Sell horse from No, No and Thrice No or keep it and sell your old one )
- < Brothers And Sisters One And All >
- < Lenny - Coach Robbery >
- < Pearson - Hunting >
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Gilded Cage
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- American Fathers 1
- Fine Night of Debauchery
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- < Micah - Coach Robbery >
- Horsemen Apocalypses
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Urban Pleasures
- American Fathers 2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Country Pursuits
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- < Money Lending and Other Sins 4 >
- Revenge is a Dish Best Eaten
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Banking The Old American Art

I have a question about when people think it is appropriate to go fishing as Arthur away from the mission strands? Going after the legendary fish, challenges etc. Whenever fishing is in a mission it feels like there is some sort of tutorial involved such as Javier giving you crickets for bait. So should Arthur stay away from fishing until after all tutorial elements are completed?

There can be a natural beat, if you will, to fish and chill out after certain high stress missions I've found.

That said, I've also done Survivalist 10 before leaving Chapter 2 as well. And then I'll just fish for fun when I wish.
