Does anyone know the best time to get Pearson's rabbit request?

Remember to have a low health core to look "peeky", there's infinite whisky in Hosea's tent. You can also use it to gain weight, drink 8 bottles of whisky and then save and reload, every time you do this you gain +0,75% of weight, I once increased Arthur's weight from -7,50% all the way to +7,50 by doing this just to see how he looked like fat lol.

I just tried a slightly different order for the early section of chapter 2 that ended up working pretty well. It keeps "Americans at Rest" as the first mission while avoiding some of the usual downsides of that order. It also takes into account recent changes you guys have been trying like doing "Exit Pursued" before "Polite Society" and having Javier's home robbery after Sean's party. Let me know what you think:

JE) Americans at Rest

JE) The First Shall Be Last

JE) Companion Activity: Home Robbery

RS) Who is Not Without Sin

LS) Money Lending and Other Sins I-II

H) Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego

U) Polite Society Valentine Style

The main difference here is that I postpone "Without Sin" until after the party and home robbery. I know we thought Swanson is meant to be rescued beforehand given that he shows up to the party regardless, but wouldn't it be realistic for Swanson to return to camp every now and then? Maybe the party was what started him on this particular drinking binge. And by doing the home robbery in between the party and Swanson's mission, we give him time to return to gambling, so that Grimshaw's dialogue still makes sense: 'It looks like he's been up for days'.

And like I said this order seems to have many advantages overall:

  • The chapter begins with "Americans at Rest" which is narratively a much stronger opening mission than "Without Sin". It involves several main characters (not just Swanson), takes place at Valentine which is a central location of the chapter (instead of a random train station we barely visit), and sets the initial events of the chapter in motion (it's not just a standalone mission).
  • "Americans at Rest" -> "Without Sin" -> "Money Lending" matches the order of leads as given by Hosea at the start of the chapter.
  • By postponing "Without Sin" we avoid having such a rushed first day. Arthur can take his time socializing, exploring, hunting etc. before he goes into town.
  • We also avoid having two major fist fights on the same day. (And we still get that hand to hand tutorial in "Americans at Rest" before "Without Sin").
  • The Javier missions are nicely organized together and not broken up by a random Swanson mission. This improves the flow of the chapter IMO as these Javier missions are directly related. We meet Javier and the boys in Valentine, learn that Sean has been captured, ride to Blackwater the next day to rescue him, and then Javier follows up on the home robbery lead he heard about in town.
  • It now makes sense for Arthur to play cards (and get the poker tutorial) during "Without Sin" because he already rescued Sean and is not pressed for time anymore.
  • "Money Lending" is played right when Dutch's prompt for that mission is unlocked (which seems to happen once "Americans at Rest" and two other main missions are completed). So you don't have to worry about triggering the conversation by accident when you go behind Dutch's tent.
  • By the time of "Exit Pursued" Arthur has completed all the initial leads mentioned by Hosea and should have enough money for a decent horse. The fact that he just did a bunch of debt collecting would explain why he tells Hosea 'I could do with a break from this place'.
  • Finally Arthur won't be stranded in Valentine if he returns the horse after "Polite Society" because we already unlocked the stables.

Sound like a good option if you like it Canadian. After all we just kind of assumed that Swanson being back means he has been rescued whereas who knows if that was or wasn't Rockstar's intention because as someone else pointed out a while back for Hosea to know about him going to Flatneck Station he must've gone there and came back before.

After all, there are other examples in the game where it makes sense dialogue-wise for a certain mission to be left until later which gives the appearance that characters are left out of camp for a long time when in the context of the story it may be that they are actually going to and from camp but Rockstar didn't code this in for obvious reasons as th main (yellow) missions always need to be available to the player.

An example is Delights Of Van Horn in Chapter 6 which is unlocked early but based on dialogue is strongly hinted to come late yet this means that Bill and Micah APPEAR to be out of camp for a long time.

Can anyone confirm this for me:-

Hunting Requests 1 - 4 are all available as Arthur however you can't get Hunting Request 5 until after starting the epilogue and finishing The Wheel at which point you can then finish the mission

Was just double checking.

Yes, Hunting Request 5 is the only one Arthur cannot do.

Thanks mate. I couldn't remember whether it became available after The Wheel or Motherhood too. I know it was one or the other

Hi everyone! I started this game yesterday, aiming to do a 100% complete playthrough where I try to motivate every ingame action I do with a canon or at least a headcanon reason. So reading up in this topic (which I can do freely, by and large - a friend of mine spoiled the ending a few years ago but that isn't gonna stop me from having fun with this) has been a great help. Thanks to everyone for that!

Currently, I am at the beginning of chapter 2 with a couple of questions. I've got a few different save files, so I can go back if needed.

1) I triggered Hosea's book request by reading another book of his near his sleeping spot in camp. However, neither Arthur nor Hosea acknowledged this, aside from any unrelated "Hosea is reading a book at the table" banter, I suppose. Is there a way to trigger this item request with some kind of dialogue? Or is Arthur thinking something akin to "better get my good friend another book before he has nothing to read anymore" in his head? The other two item requests so far (Dutch's pipe and Mary-Beth's pen) did have a fair amount of dialogue, which makes Hosea's request stand out even more.

2) The same friend who spoiled this game also gave me the tip to find a gold bar for good early money in Limpany. Approaching the area from camp, I found a fisherman fishing at the river, but he didn't have anything worthwhile to say when I greeted him. I was wondering whether that encounter was glitched, or if I did something wrong (like spooked him, I did shoot a deer a short distance from him). Or do some of these events just have nothing to them (except maybe rob the people, but I'm going for high honor)?

3) In Limpany, I found a jail with a locked cell door. Do many locked doors like these exist? Because I was wondering whether I should look around for a key in the area right then and there, or save it for later? I decided the latter - if there even is a key, Eagle Eye didn't pick up on anything in that cell after all.

4) I went a little bit further down south besides the river from Limpany, spurred by the noises of another random event, when suddenly I got a popup saying "Legendary fish location discovered" or something similar. Now this one irks me the most, how is Arthur supposed to know abouth this location just by running a few yards somewhat close to the river? And how would he even know about the concept of Legendary animals (or fish) in the first place? Legendary animal hunting would seem to me to be a concept introduced during a mission or at least a side mission. I was thinking maybe it could have been linked to the (botched?) fisherman encounter from question #2.

5) Said random event from question #4: originally it was a man inspecting his horse, who got his face kicked in. I was a bit salty about being unable to save him, more so because I held the left trigger too soon after getting off my horse - which made me just look at my own horse instead of his, whilst his death was happening behind my back.
A reload to my most recent save of a couple of in-game hours earlier, and the random event in the same location changed to a woman trapped under a dead horse. After freeing her, I could offer her a ride to Valentine, but seeing as I haven't been there yet, I reloaded yet again because I didn't want to get overwhelmed by the combination of escorting her to Valentine and the "first visit to Valentine" scripted events that I imagine might happen.
Final reload luckily just gave me a stagecoach being robbed by a couple of O'Driscolls which I could settle right there.
So I was wondering whether there's an exhaustive list of all these random encounters somewhere? Possibly with information regarding if they only occur in a certain time frame/chapter/time of day or other conditions, whether there are some that only give you one chance to succeed at them, and so on. A pessimist thought of mine was that maybe the lady who you can offer a ride to Valentine won't trigger anymore once you get to Valentine yourself, but that might be too extreme.

6) I was looking at the list found in this thread https://gtaforums.com/topic/956896-100-chronological-order-of-missionscraftingrequests/ and thought about using it for my own playthrough. Seeing as the place where I'm posting right now is linked to in that topic, I hope some people in here have also seen that list. In which case, I'm somewhat confused about the data in the "notes" column, the timing in particular - e.g. "Day 1 Morning".
Looking at chapter 2 for example, it says "The Spines of America (Hosea)" with timing "Day 13 Morning". But the entry directly below that is "Charles Oleander Request" with timing "Day 1 Morning"? I might be missing something here, but I'd think the timings in the "notes" column might just be wrong, whilst the order in the "missions" column is still fine by itself? A little bit further down, the list mentions the final chapter 2 mission "A Strange Kindness (Dutch)" with timing "Day 8 Evening", which is impossible if The Spines of America happens way later on day 13. So what kind of reasoning (or maybe bug) is behind this "resetting" of the calendar in that specific ordered list? I see it happen in the later chapters too.

Apologies in advance to the people who put themselves through reading all of that, as well as maybe apologizing for my English here and there - it's not my native language :)
And thanks already to everybody who is willing to answer any of my questions!

@jimmyoneshotNew user here, made an account because I want to do a story oriented playthrough. I completed the game recently and I'd like to play the story in a "canon" order, or at least one that makes the most sense. Could you please send me an updated version of the original post, or the best mission order in your opinion? You're the top poster and I've been reading your posts but it's really time consuming. Thanks.

Howdy Jornax,

1 - No you just trigger by reading the book. The dialogue in the previous cutscene was kind of the prompt, when Hosea talks about reading his book

2 - Sounds like that was just a regular NPC without any special event

3 - There are many locked doors without keys including that one

4 - Legendary animals are introduced in the mission "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego", Hosea will give you a map of their locations. Arthur will unlock the fishing rod during "A Fisher of Men". You get a map of legendary fish locations in a stranger mission called "A Fisher of Fish".

5 - About the stranded lady, she still spawns after you've been to Valentine. There's actually a few different places she might appear, and my favourite place is near Emerald Ranch. This might be the closest thing to an exhaustive list of random encounters: https://reddead.fandom.com/wiki/Random_Encounters_in_Red_Dead_Redemption_2. You can't always predict which encounter you'll get but there are only a few possibilities at each spawn location. If you want to reload and get the same encounters like before, make sure you fully quit out of the game before reloading, and follow the same actions (if you go to different areas or trigger cutscenes the encounters will change).

6 - Not sure it just looks like a mistake

Thanks for clearing things up for me and for the link!

Other than those "issues", things have been mostly going pretty good so far.

The exception is Pearson's rabbit request, which apparently is pretty infamous for its difficult/random trigger requirements. Haven't had any luck with it so far, but I was wondering if these two things might stop it from happening: 1) already having Pearson's compass request in the log; 2) a mission of Kieran being available near Pearson's cooking area in the camp.

Also, a different minor thing, but a while ingame back, Pearson told me about the trapper when I brought back some hunting spoils. Afterwards, a trapper icon got added to my map - in an area I hadn't been to yet, so I wasn't pressed to visit that person. However, a quit game/load save later, that icon disappeared from my map and it hasn't returned since. Is that a bug? Normal? Or was I supposed to immediately go to that trapper, maybe for some extra (Pearson-related?) dialogue?

No problem ✌️ Kieran's mission does seem to block it, I find the most reliable time is before Americans at Rest. The trapper is still there his icon just disappears

Hey folks, long time!  How is everyone?

Question for y'all - In the epilogue, there is a convo between Uncle and Abigail at Beecher's Hope.  Uncle says John Marston is the luckiest man alive (referring to Abigail), that Arthur told him that long time ago.   Makes Abigail cry.

Does anyone know how to trigger this interaction?   Is it before or after American Venom?  Is it always in the evening?

Here's a recording of it I found on youtube.   It is the last bit of dialogue I was hoping to capture before I am well and truly done with my film series.   I can do without it, but thought it would be nice.

I already got this after American Venom, but I think it can also happen before.

I did a little digging and found 4 videos of it, and in all 4 its evening/night and appears to be after American Venom due to there not being any more main missions on the minimap.

Thanks @Jisoo that is so helpful!!   I still haven't been able to trigger it, after American Venom in the evening or night, but will keep trying 🙂

Note - my save file is after American Venom, and also after John has done all the hunting requests and placed the squirrel on the mantel.  "It's art!"

Same question about the tête-à-tête with Mary-Beth in Chapter 6, when she tells Arthur to try to do the good thing.  I was never able to trigger that convo either.

No problem ✌️ Kieran's mission does seem to block it, I find the most reliable time is before Americans at Rest. The trapper is still there his icon just disappears

I have indeed found the trapper, he was doing just fine!
Still no luck with Pearson's rabbit request though, although to be fair I still haven't done Kieran's mission yet. Got too invested for that these past few days, in the stuff happening at Castor's Ridge and Appleseed Timber Co, as well as random encounters in and around Valentine. The amount of events offered is really incredible.

Which brings me to another question, I am done with Castor's Ridge and almost finished with Appleseed. I was planning to "acquire" one of those missable bucket hats by staying at the timber camp after the last worthwile event, which is the one with wolves I believe. Sadly, I just can't seem to only take out one guy with such a hat and go unnoticed afterwards. Every time I eliminate someone, I get the whole camp aggro'd on me, which I'd prefer to avoid. Doesn't help that no one of those hat people does a good job of isolating themselves from the rest of the camp.
Any tips for pulling that off in the most sneaky/peaceful way?

I did find a YouTube video showing me a possible way to do this, through a random event I didn't know about at the camp: a lumberjack with said bucket hat chopping down a tree and pushing the man into the tree as it falls down. However, I don't know if I can still trigger that encounter at this stage of the timber camp. Most of the trees have already been chopped down, and so far I haven't seen someone walk to a standing tree in the distance, let alone somebody wearing that hat. But I'm not sure if this is down to me having bad luck or not. Is it known what the last possible stage of Appleseed Timber Co is where that random tree chopping event can be triggered?

Edit: Update, I pulled it off! The tree falling random encounter can still happen after the wolves. I just had to wait until daytime, which I had before - but it was raining then as well. Don't know if it was just my luck but they wouldn't chop down trees in the rain. Once the weather cleared up, I had back-to-back opportunities for that random encounter in order to push a lumberjack under a falling tree. I was very grateful for that, as not all of them wear a bucket hat and it isn't as easy as one would think to push someone in the right direction, and even then I sometimes got the whole camp on alert for pushing too hard I guess 😁 But luckily it all worked out in the end!

Hello man. That's great to hear. The graphics are amazing on PC. @BrandyNova has some great 4k videos of the game on PC too. I did a couple of full playthroughs a few weeks back but I've been taking a little break from the game as I've been doing a fair bit of freelance work, plus The Last Of Us Part I just came out ha.

Well, there needs to be a little time gap between the bear mission and Spines of America, in my opinion. That's because Hosea managed not only to settle in at the ranch, he was also able to gain a lot of information about the place. And that requires time.

Robbing the place at night is efficient if you want to gain more money, but I guess the canon choice is the opposite.

I still say there is absolutely no correct order to play the missions and if you are doing so, you are playing the game wrong.

Every playthrough I do is different.

The game works well with the missions played in any order.

If you want to get realistic, then Arthur wouldn't do ANY side quests, would always have a bounty, and would play through the yellow story quest as fast as possible, leaving EVERYHING else for John. All collections, challenges, hunting and fishing would be end-game only.

Spines should be during the day, I just start at night to get the extended cutscene when Arthur decides to wait. Hosea scams the cousins w/ "spinal alignment" so the mission name is a reference to the day approach. For Charles, I have it there because it's on the way to Emerald Ranch and the bison will stay on your horse during Spines. It unlocks after Exit but I don't feel Arthur would go hunting again right away.

Agreed I prefer having at least another day between Exit and Spines. Grimshaw's prompt to see Hosea isn't that urgent so you could even wait longer IMO.

Some is personal preference but not everything, for example doing "Pouring Forth Oil IV" before "Fisher of Men" is objectively wrong. I personally find it unrealistic to speedrun the missions. There are times in the story without much (or any) urgency so I don't have a problem w/ Arthur doing side missions on occasion. Most strangers arguably do not fit well for John at all 😛

Looks good bud.

  • There's the issue of the Reverend not being at the party but as we discussed a couple of weeks back we know he comes and goes based on the fact that he has told Hosea about the train station before the start of the chapter.
  • I quite like the idea of staying in the hotel after Polite Society because for some reason Arthur always gets dirty during it for me no matter what so it's a good time to get a bath and then stay overnight. The hotel manager's dialogue I'm 50/50 on too. Part of me thinks it seems like it was designed to be on the same day as Polite with the "Oh, it's you!" line etc but I also wonder if that was maybe meant for another day. And doing Good Honest Snake Oil the day after that makes sense too. The dialogue with Uncle and the girls when we get back to camp too related to the mission also seems like it could be for either the same day or the day after but it does fit pretty well the next day i.e. the way Arthur says "So you and the girls got back okay?" with Uncle's reply of "Yeah. How'd you get on with that fella who ran off on you?" seems to fit more after some time has passed rather than if it happens directly after the mission.
  • Then there's the one about Dutch being in 2 different scripted outfits on the same day if we do Social Call and Quiet Time on the same day however we can choose to overlook that as an oversight by Rockstar I think.
  • I think you may have made a mistake after Pouring Forth Oil I where you've said 'camp until morning' because I think at that point it will still be pretty early in the day because We Loved Once And True I > Money Lending III > Poring Forth Oil I is what I usually do and it only normally takes until midday which leaves plenty of time for We Loved Once and True II - III. Other than that I agree completely.

I mean, ye but still, there are many clues some missions were meant to happen after others. Chapter 6 as a whole is the perfect example for it, evenets that havent transpired in your playthrough will get mentioned in missions no matter if you did or not the other missions. Polite Society lip-sync as well, although I can just judge it as a oversight by Rockstar.

Thanks for the feedback, it gave me some new ideas. I rewrote this post to explain my thoughts a little better (and I did some testing that changed some of my opinions).

re: Swanson

  • I found evidence that supports doing Without Sin before TFSBL.
  • When Swanson is drunk at the party he says 'this keeps happening', which is probably a reference to Without Sin.
  • Grimshaw says 'it looks like he's been up for days' after you bring Swanson back, implying that Swanson has been away from camp for multiple days. Even if you do Javier's home robbery in between the party and Without Sin, that's still only one day.
  • If you trigger Sean's party before you've rescued Swanson, he always seems to spawn in abruptly around the time Mary-Beth asks you to dance. If you've already rescued Swanson then he will (usually) already be in camp when the party starts. (I tested this before and he was spawning in both cases, but now when I rescue him first he's always in camp). This seems like a quirk rather than the game accounting for different orders.

re: Staying in Valentine after Polite Society

  • Yeah I think the dialogue works fine in either case, but I do see how it could imply a different day. 'Oh, it's you' arguably sounds like something you'd say after a few days, compared to 'What do you want now?' for example if it was the same day.

re: Exit Pursued before Polite Society

  • One downside to unlocking the stables before Polite Society is that Polite Society is most likely pushed to week 3 of the chapter, which means that Mary-Beth's dialogue about the girls being 'cooped up for 2 weeks now' doesn't quite fit.
  • I was thinking that maybe instead we could do Exit Pursued immediately after the home robbery, and leave Money Lending 1-2 for later, since the home robbery alone gets you more than enough cash for the Standardbred. But I'm not sure how to make that order work, with the timing of Hosea being at Emerald Ranch for Spines.

re: A Quiet Time, Dutch's outfit change

  • I agree the outfit change probably shouldn't be a deal breaker.
  • However, I was thinking about alternative orders and came up with this one, let me know what you think. I believe this works with mission unlocks but haven't tried it. Would explain Dutch's outfit change, and a nice thing is the end of WLOAT 3 would now lead naturally into Sheep and Goats since it leaves you in Valentine. Arthur would also read Mary's letter as soon as it arrives, which might be intended. The whole Lenny and Micah narrative becomes Arthur's distraction from PFO 2.

I agree partly and that is technically true hence why the missions can be done in whatever order you want but the idea of this topic is more about what makes sense as a chronological order rather than what is a definitive correct order as there isn't really any such thing.

There are clues in the game however as to what was perhaps an original order in the game before certain missions were moved around to be available at different points. In Chapter 6 during Bridge To Nowhere for example Arthur specifically refers to events that happened in missions that you may or may not have done yet indicating these should be done before it. Likewise in Chapter 2, he refers to the events of Fisher Of Men during Pouring Forth Oil even though that mission can actually be done before or after Pouring Forth Oil.

It is great to try out different orders though and you certainly should because it gives you different dialogues and interactions etc that you don't get otherwise.

Dutch's outfit is easily overlooked as he pretty much wears the same outfit, just with two different vests.

Now that RDR1 is pretty much completely playable on PC at 60fps using Xenia emulator I think I'll do a series for youtube where I play RDR2 and RDR1 back to back in chronological order. I've ever felt like those two games are only one story. RDR1 feels like the third act of a epic
