How do you unlock Quiet Time? Guide says Money Lending I & II and Social Call but I’ve got a funny feeling that it’s just Social Call and Money Lending isn’t needed. Which is it?

Just Social Call bud. Money Lending has no effect. The guide is wrong on that.

I agree with you on these points of why Polite should not be first, especially the lip -synching and playing Polite after Exit. I  have been playing Polite later but never thought of playing it after Exit so I could get my horse from the stable. It makes more sense than the game leaving me in town without a horse because stealing one would not be laying low.

I also like the ideal of playing Without Sin on Day 1 and At Rest the next day. I decided to put my 100% completion game on hold because it is frustrating me too much and I started a new game but I will try this the next go round.

Also, do you have a completed list for Chapter 3 & 4? The only ones I have are from last year and I have a feeling there has been new discoveries since then. :)

Thanks, thought as much. I wanted to try Social Call straight after Sean’s party but then Dutch won’t give the Strauss reminder since he’ll be in his tent for Quiet Time.

Ye I honestly don't think the Strauss reminder matters to be honest. After all it's just a random thing anyway not a fully scripted one like Grimshaw's reminder about Hosea for Spines for example. I don't think it's a deal breaker going without it at all in fact without it may even make more sense because when Arthur talks to Strauss he acts like he doesn't know what Strauss is up to so...

That reminds me though something I was thinking about is - does it make sense to do Social Call and Quiet Time on the same day? I used to do that but for a while, I've been put off it because in Quiet Time Dutch completely changes clothes from Social Call which suggests they take place on different days. However I noticed there are other instances where the gang seem to completely change clothes at random times so that may just be a gamey thing. Like maybe Rockstar randomly generated clothes for certain missions without continuity in mind.

An example of this is Javier is always in a different outfit during Sean's Party than during First Shall Be Last and I think Charles is too and I also think some of the gang members during Jack's party are in different outfits than the ones they are scripted to be in during Battle Of Shady Belle and it SEEMS that is meant to be all on the same day.

Just a thought I had really.

There is also a very quick complete clothing change by Charles during Eastward Bound's ending cutscene if you watch close in the background between 9:46 and 10:36 here:-

I suppose, it just seems a shame not to include it. But I’d agree that it isn’t a dealbreaker.

Interesting stuff about the clothes. I always liked Quiet Time after Social Call since SC finishes at about 5.30 which seems perfect for QT. Plus the dialogue with Dutch about getting back on their feet makes sense after raiding O’Driscolls and making a decent profit.

However, I’m starting to think that Social Call maybe ought to come before Exit. Two main reasons: 1) it gives the player a good amount of money which they can spend on a horse, rather than having to cobble together enough from doing Money Lending/Snake Oil like we do. (And if Polite is going after Exit, then Snake Oil won’t even be available yet). Seems more intentional that a mission that forces you to buy such an expensive horse should have unlocked after a mission with a guaranteed payout. 2) The chimney searching in Spines to me implies that Spines goes after Social Call, so SC should go either before Exit or between Exit and Spines. Coupled with my first point, I’d prefer just to get SC out of the way before starting Hosea’s strand.

So I’d maybe put SC before Exit. Trouble is, I don’t know about QT before Exit too. I just feel that QT and Blessed belong to the second half of the chapter, so it’s strange placing them so early. I’m open to persuasion about that though. That means that QT couldn’t follow SC because I’d prefer to get Exit and Spines done first (QT after Spines late-afternoon would be perfect).

Anyway that’s basically where I’m at with SC. What do you think?

Ye I agree. It always kind of fits here more than anything else. I tried doing Money Lending 2 followed directly by Social Call which I thought would also make sense however at the end of Money Lending 2 because the ending cutscene and the last part of the mission takes place in camp the back of Dutch's tent is open as he isn't in position for Quiet Time yet until you are out of the mission. This means that as soon as the mission ends the back of Dutch's tent is still open even during the opening cutscene of Quiet Time which looks unintentional and then it pings shut during the cutscene at some point which looks even weirder ha.

Maybe but recently I've been wondering if Javier's Home Robbery should come before Exit to be honest. It is the first Companion Activity to unlock after First Shall Be The Last and the game notifies us about it too plus it's a good money mission.

Another thing to consider is do we NEED to rush to Emerald Ranch after Grimshaw tells us about Hosea rather than getting her message and then doing it later? We assume that we should be doing that for realism purposes but there are other clues in the game that characters are meant to be waiting at locations such as in Chapter 6 when Micah goes to Van Horn after Social Call yet dialogue suggests this mission should be left until after the whole Indian questline which means Micah and Bill would be waiting for a long time too. OR it may be the case that Rockstar never thought this through and we are just supposed to headcanon that Micah and Bill are traveling between camp and Van Horn or something same as Hosea could be in Chapter 2.

How about Home Robbery on the day following Sean’s party? If Polite is going after Exit, there needs to be something else to fill the half-day. Money Lending is too long, so it’s either Social Call, Polite, Exit, or the robbery. I think the robbery would fit because it’s unlocked by First Shall be Last, so it dovetails nicely. Only issue is that dirty shotgun which needs cleaning.

I like Exit straight after Money Lending since loansharking seems a good reason for Arthur to “want a break from this place”. What about you?

Ye recently I've been doing it after Sean's Party as you say but I also do Money Lending before Javier's robbery like this if I sleep until morning during the party or I just don't go to bed:-

- Americans At Rest

- Who Is Not Without Sin

-------------------------------------------------------

- First Shall Be The Last

-------------------------------------------------------

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 (All 3 Debts)

- < Javier - Home Robbery >

-------------------------------------------------------

- Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego

OR if I sleep until noon and then spread the debts over 2 days like this:-

- Americans At Rest

- Who Is Not Without Sin

-------------------------------------------------------

- First Shall Be The Last

-------------------------------------------------------

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 (Wrobel Debt)

- < Javier - Home Robbery >

-------------------------------------------------------

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 (Matthews Debt)

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 (Millet Debt)

- Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego

My thinking being that Arthur should probably do the money making mission that Hosea told him about at the start of the chapter (or part of it at least) before doing any other kind of money making and this also touches on the 3 things that Hosea told Arthur to do at the start of the Chapter rather than him going to Valentine to look for leads when he hasn't looked into all of the first 3 leads that Hosea told him about yet.

As for the Shotgun at Chez Porter I don't think that's a deal breaker because it's not part of the mission itself. It appears there anytime and once Arthur and Javier have cleared the place it seems like they want to get out of there fast.

EDIT OR Another possibility I just thought of which may make sense because Exit Pursued looks like Arthur is on his way out of camp during the opening cutscene which fits with it being a morning mission:-

- Who Is Not Without Sin

-------------------------------------------------------

- Americans At Rest

- (Bath)

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 (Wrobel Debt)

-------------------------------------------------------

- First Shall Be The Last

-------------------------------------------------------

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 (Matthews Debt)

- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 (Millet Debt)

- < Javier - Home Robbery >

-------------------------------------------------------

- Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego

You could maybe even do the Matthews and Millet Debts on the same day as Americans At Rest and then even do the Wrobel debt actually on the way to First Shall Be The Last.

Psycho18

Talking about Javier's house robbery, Sean is in the cut scene. For me, Sean disappears alot from the camp. Comes back for the cut scene in the house robbery , then disappears again. I don't like this. So I put house robbery after Mrs. Downes shows up at camp for Arthur's coughing, and after PFO4 so I know Sean is in camp.

Thank you for the list.

I've decided, with this game, the list will never be concrete. I've been on here since Sep. 2019 and chapter 2 is still under discussion. lol  It makes sense, though, with so many people having different opinions but that's what makes it so interesting. So many ideals to try until you find the one that's right for you.

I tested Goodbye Dear Friend for the best time to start.  I started at 7am, 12:30pm and 4pm and time went to 3pm when they went out the door every time. The time was still 3pm when the shooting stopped and also when Arthur returned to camp so it looks like it's still the same day when it finishes.

Yeah I see where you’re coming from but I don’t really class Strauss as a “lead”. Hosea doesn’t say “Strauss wants you to collect some debts for him”, he just says he “came back from town with that creepy little smile on his face” or something like that. Has Arthur done debt-collecting work in the past? I can’t think whether there’s a reference to it or not. Either way, I can’t see Arthur volunteering himself for the cause, which is why I like to put it off until I get the Dutch reminder.

Each to their own of course. I get why you want to get all 3 leads squared away before beginning anything else.

Another thing is that I prefer to do all three debts at once because it seems weird to go out to Emerald Ranch for Chick and Lilly but then ignore Downes who is the closest for days just to get the Strauss cutscene. Seems more likely that Arthur would get all three while he’s focused on the job, but then get distracted with other business for the next few days and completely forget about Downes.

I’ve got this on paper but I’m not sure how it’ll play:

Spoiler

Without Sin

-

Americans at Rest

-

First Shall be Last

<Sleep until noon>
-

Javier - Home Robbery

-

<Dutch reminder>
Money Lending I & II (All debts)

Exit Pursued

-

Hunting - Charles

Social Call

<Grimshaw reminder>
<Sleep now or head out and start Spines at night>
-

Spines of America (Day option)

Polite Society

<Return horse and retrieve yours from stables>
Snake Oil

Quiet Time

-

Blessed etc etc

I’ll see if I can test it in the next few days.

Strauss's missions are easy to me. He gives a note and I follow that order.

And that is:

Lilly Millet

Mr. Wrobel.

Chick Matthews.

Thomas Downes (after having waited for the famous cutscene, to prove that Arthur was too distracted by Mary to do any work).

Winton Holmes.

Gwyn Hughes.

Algie Davison.

J. John Weathers.

Arthur Londonderry.

After reading everybody's ideas, I do agree on many.

Here two good ways to start Chapter 2.

1st way is still my favorite.

Without Sin

Polite Society

American At Rest

First shall be Last

Party

Money Lending- Mr. Worbal, Millet, and Mathews

Money Lending next day: Mr. Downes

Paying a Social Call

Snake Oil

Quiet Time

Exit Pursued- stay behind to hunt animals or return to camp at 9am

Spines of America- daytime mission

Blessed are the Meek

2nd way works well too

Without Sin

American at Rest

First shall be Last

Party

Money Lending- Mr Worbal, Millet, and Mathews

Money Lending- next day: Mr. Downes

Paying Social Call

Exit Pursued- Return to camp with Hosea only at 9am

Polite Society

Spines of America-- In-game time clock is fast, nighttime mission.

Snake Oil

Quiet Time

Blessed are the Meek

I agree that Money Lending needs to be done first after Sean's Party. Hosea and Dutch tells Arthur about helping Strauss.  Money Lending needs to be done before Spines. In Spine, Hosea says "you the one is Gallivanting around here".

I agree that Paying a Social Call needs to be done before Spines of America. In Social Call, Kieran tells Arthur to check the chimney.  Social Call is a good way to earn a lot of money to buy a expensive horse in Exit Pursued.

Snake Oil needs to be done before before Quiet Time. In Quiet Time, when Arthur gets arrested, the Deputy tells Arthur not to come  back. Snake Oil, opens up after Polite Society. Polite Society should be done early in chapter 2 or after Exit Pursued. If Polite Society is place after Exit Pursued, then Snake Oil and Quiet Time needs to be done after Spines. Blessed are the Meek should be placed  immediately after Quiet Time.

In Pastoral Scene, Arthur receives an Lancaster rifle from Micah. Before PO4, I equip the Lancaster rifle and Double Barrel Shotgun, but in PO4 Arthur auto equips Carbine rifle and Varmint rifle. It not fun to shoot the lawmen with a varmint rifle. Pastoral needs to be after PO4.

What do you guys, think about placing Fisher of Men after PO4 and Pastoral Scene?

I think that Fisher of Men should be after, because the Pinkertons follows the river saw the mess that Micah and Arthur made in Pastoral Scene. Then the Pinkertons continue follow the river and saw Arthur fishing with Jack. Plus, Pastoral Scene is the final mission between Blackwater and Horseshoe Overlook.

In PFO IV Arthur always says that the Pinkertons found him near Horseshoe, so Fisher of Men must come first since that’s what he’s referring to. I like your lists.

So do you ride all the way to Emerald Ranch, then all the way back past camp to Painted Sky, then back towards Emerald? I’d have thought that was a bit cumbersome. Or do you split them up?

Yes.

By doing that I'm headcanoning that Arthur, who hates doing Strauss's dirty job, gives Matthews a little more time to pay his debt.

Looks good, especially the start but one issue is Mary's letter will appear after Social Call which I dislike because the letter mentions the events of Polite Society which won't have been done yet. Seems strange that a letter unlocks about an event that hasn't happened yet especially when it's so forced on us being right at Arthur's tent.

To be fair I think doing Javier's home robbery does make sense before Money Lending 1-2 too in a way because Arthur and Javier ride right past Downes ranch on the way to Chez Porter which would be unlocked if Money Lending 1-2 had been done. Another thing is when Dutch gives th reminder to Arthur he says "but I've been working hard Dutch" which would make sense if he'd done a job with Javier.

The last time I was messing around in Chapter 2 I tried this out but can't remember if anything weird happened

Just a note about Arthur's Journal in relation to Money Lending 1-2. The following gets added to the journal the next time Arthur sleeps or if a save game is reloaded any time after Arthur has first approached Strauss for Money Lending 1. You can even sleep while the mission is active and no debts have yet been collected and it will still get added. It doesn't change even after doing all of the debts before the entry gets added.

Based on the way Arthur is talking about what the debtors are going to BE like rather than what they WERE like suggests he may have written this entry before any of the debtors are approached. This may indicate that Arthur is meant to talk to Strauss late in the day and then sleep before doing any of the debts or maybe just do the Wrobel debt only and then the others on another day. Or he could just be referring to what the debtors in the later chapters could be like.

It just seems strange to me that he would write "It'll be the usual sort of desperados - sick farmers, pregnant maids, lovesick young men" rather than describing the debts he has already collected.

OR it may just be that the journal is inconsistent with the actual game/story which is the case at other times.

Yeah I noticed that and I think you’re right, it makes sense to do Social Call first. I wonder if Polite originally unlocked Social Call OR Polite was originally a third condition for the letter to appear or something like that.

Yeah I agree with this. Imagine how things might have turned out if Arthur had sent Javier in to collect Downes’ debt instead 😂

That looks pretty perfect actually. Might get a chance to play it through later. I stay in the Valentine hotel after meeting Mary but that’s the only difference.

I wonder if that’s just an oddity with the journal system or if Arthur is canonically only writing in it before he goes to sleep. If it’s an oddity, you could explain it by saying that Arthur writes in his journal a lot more often, we just don’t see it. So he may have written that after speaking to Strauss but before leaving camp. Saying that, it’ll be evening by the time you return from Javier’s home robbery so you could very reasonably get Dutch’s reminder late, then speak to Strauss and sleep before heading out the next day.

Possibly. In fact even if you do literally just Americans At Rest and Social Call then from that point onwards Grimshaw can approach you and give you the reminder about Mary i.e. "one of the girls saw that Mary Gillis sniffing about" even without the letter being unlocked because Money Lending 2 hasn't been done yet. Social Call basically triggers that Grimshaw reminder so it makes sense that Polite Society should be done before that as it's very likely that Mary saw one of the girls sniffing about in town and then left a letter for "Tacitus Kilgore" at the post office or something which again makes no sense if the girls hadn't been to town yet.

Ye that's what I'm thinking. A tag team debt collection would've been funny 😂 Although it wouldn't be a complete deal breaker I'd say as sometimes the locations are a bit all over the place story-wise like the way Javier says the fastest route is through Cumberland Falls when that's actually a long way around.

Ye I do too sometimes. That starting the mission late thing is optional. I just put that in there as a not really. The only issues with that order are:-

  • Grimshaw might remind you about Hosea after returning from Polit Society. I can't remember if she does here or not.
  • If she does then it would make sense that Arthur would do Social Call and then head straight to Spines after Bill and John leave. The issue with this is after Social Call time locks at 5:30pm for some reason until you get back to camp at which point it resumes so when you get to Spines straight after Social Call without returning to camp first it will still be that time meaning the night option won't trigger in Spines
  • Best case scenario is she won't do the reminder until after returning from Social Call OR you could of course just return to camp anyway donate some money or something and then head to Spines from there at which point it will be night time

Ye that's what I'm thinking. Rockstar probably just expected us to be saving and sleeping etc more but it also seems weird that they'd expect us to accept this mission and then not do it until tomorrow when the game directs us there with yellow markers straight after we accept it so most players would just do it. Also means you could possibly do this though:-

Yeah I was thinking about her reminder but there’s no real way around it:

  • Polite before Social Call because of the letter
  • Social Call before Spines because of the chimney
  • So both Polite and Social Call before Spines

And Grimshaw approaches after you return to camp i.e. after any one mission, so there’s no order in which you can get the Spines message after both of these. You can a) try and be quick and start a mission before she speaks to you, b) get the reminder and ignore it until you’re ready (Hosea does say to come when “it’s convenient”) or c) hunt a deer or equivalent before returning after Polite Society so that she doesn’t approach. That feels a bit glitchy, but it’s probably the best option and it’s good practice to hunt dinner before returning anyway.

I presume she approaches after Polite. If not, my points above are moot, but I can’t see why she wouldn’t. So in your order above, you could remember to hunt a deer after Polite and then you wouldn’t be reminded until after Social Call.

Does the time lock post-SC happen every time? I don’t think I’ve ever noticed it happening. So would it stay at 5.30 even if you travelled the map?  Seems strange.

EDIT: Forgot to say I like the second of the two orders above, where you start Money Lending after the home robbery and sleep. The Dutch reminder is pretty important to me since it emphasises Arthur’s reluctance to help.

Ye the Grimshaw approach can be an issue in that last order I posted I'm unsure whether she will approach after Polite Society. I think a certain number of hours ned to have passed since Exit Pursued but I'd have to double check. Dodging around her like crazy would be a bit too gamey if she does.

Here's an alternative one I came up with a couple of months back. This is for if you do Polite Society early before Exit and includes Ellie Ann Swan:-

Spoiler

- Americans At Rest
- Who Is Not Without Sin
--------------------------------------
- First Shall Be The Last
--------------------------------------
- Polite Society, Valentine Style
--------------------------------------
- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2 ( All debts )
--------------------------------------
- < Javier - Home Robbery >
- Good Honest Snake Oil
--------------------------------------
- Exit Pursued
--------------------------------------
- < Charles - Hunting >

- ( Return to camp with pelt which will stop Grimshaw approaching about Spines )
- Paying A Social Call

- ( Grimshaw should approach here about Spines )
- Spines Of America (wait overnight when given the option and start it in the morning then return with Hosea)
--------------------------------------
- < Bounty Hunting - Ellie Ann Swan >
- Quiet Time
--------------------------------------
- Blessed Are The Meek
- ( Camp overnight )
--------------------------------------
- We Loved Once And True 1 ( Mary's letter )
- Money Lending and Other Sins 3 ( triggered by reading Mary's letter )
- Pouring Forth Oil 1
- We Loved Once And True 2 - 3
- Pouring Forth Oil 2 ( automatically skips here )
- ( Stay in Valentine hotel overnight )
--------------------------------------
- Pouring Forth Oil 3
- Fisher Of Men
- Pouring Forth Oil 4
--------------------------------------
- American Pastoral Scene
- Sheep And The Goats
--------------------------------------
- A Strange Kindness

You can also get the time to move if you do a stranger quest or random encounter in between Social Call and Spines. Arcadia for Amateurs works well enough but the Valentine bounty missions are the closest to where Social Call ends. Maybe Rockstar stopped the time specifically for people to complete Snake Oil or Ellie Ann Swan's bounty after Social Call.

I knew I shouldn't have gotten back on here. I thought I had Chapter 2 wrapped up but now I'm seeing new clues to make me change some things. lol

Good possible idea. It could be a number of things to be honest I used to think that it was meant because Social Call unlocked Quiet Time which is meant to start at around 7 pm so the time was locked to flow well with that mission. I also think it could possibly be a bug where they didn't want Social Call to go into the night so they set up a script that slows time down as it gets late in the day but when the mission ends they didn't unset this script like they should have so the clock stays locked. The reason it might unlock when we get back to camp may be because I think I remember hearing that time goes at a different pace when we are in camp so when we get back to camp the time switching to this new pace resets it back to normal. Just a guess though as a programmer myself haha

@JonnyTNT7 A small issue, I noticed yesterday with doing Javier's Home Robbery before Money Lending - After waking up from Sean's party at noon as I headed towards the back of camp where Javier is Dutch approached me and did the Strauss reminder. Moving anywhere behind or to the left hand side of Dutch's tent (when facing camp from the entrance) causes him to make a b-line for Arthur. I completely forgot about this to be honest ha

I actually like the thought of activating Strauss' debt collecting and then instantly going on the home robbery with Javier. It's a good money making mission early, plus if you're adventurous like me, you visit the derailed train afterwards which is nearby and use both gold bars to get most upgrades to the camp.

Usually I'd do Javier's home robbery in the middle of Chapter 2 and then go north to deal with Flaco Hernandez.

On another note, I think Arthur's journal entry is based on observation and past experiences debt collecting. I hate to think of how Arthur dealt with a pregnant maid in the past lol.

I usually head canon that certain characters who are in certain locations usually travel back and forth to camp when waiting for Arthur. It wouldn't be unusual either, seeing as they do live in camp.

If you do Exit before First Shall be The Last and have already had Grimshaw tell Arthur that Hosea is waiting for him at Emerald Ranch, then Hosea will still appear at Sean's party, but will disappear again when Arthur wakes up. The same with Swanson if he's not already rescued.

Swanson must travel back and forth between Flatneck Station and camp, otherwise how would Hosea know where he was? Plus Flatneck isn't far from camp.

I have certain head canons to make a few things make sense. For example, I usually head canon that Arthur was taken sick due to the sudden change in climate in the 2 weeks between when the gang arrives at Horseshoe Overlook and when we take control of him again. It would explain the beard growth lol.
