Ye that's another one ha. I think it is hard to tell to be honest because I think daylight wise late in the day 6 - 7pm looks pretty similar to midday so even though time is set to 10am in the story it is likely meant to be a bit later just before night if that makes sense. You can do sidequests in the meantime but like you said most of them seem very strange to do at this point with the exception of drinking at the bar for Artists's Way Part 1. I like to save Brother Dorkins until after Jack's party because at that point Swanson always comes over and tells you about him in the morning and he fits in great just before seeing Mary I think.

hehe yeah that is very true.  You know, since Dutch and Arthur first head into the city at about 4pm, if the clock hadn't reset in Joys of Civilization, they would have reached Bronte's house about 6-7 pm, in which case leaving the house at 9 pm would have made total sense.   Well, I'll just play it through as if that's what happened and ignore the annoying clock reset.

Agree about Brother Dorkins - I like to do that before seeing Mary, and I like getting Swanson's remark.  :)

It actually helps with the letter problem because as soon as you complete Social Call the letter appears at Arthur's tent which is unavoidable but if you do Exit Pursued, return with Hosea and then do Paying A social Call then the next time you return to camp after that Grimshaw will tell you about Spines rather than mentioning the letter. I then head straight out and do Spines overnight (with Charles Hunting on the way) before returning with Hosea and doing the Ellie Ann Swan bounty to take up the daytime and then Quiet Time > Blessed Are The Meek after which point I camp out then return to read the letter. So basically this:-

  Reveal hidden contents

- Americans At Rest

- Who Is Not Without Sin
---------------------------------------
- First Shall Be The Last
---------------------------------------
- Polite Society Valentine Style ( After 1pm )
---------------------------------------
- Money Lending and Other Sins 1 - 2
---------------------------------------
- Good Honest Snake Oil
---------------------------------------
- Exit Pursued ( Return )
---------------------------------------
- Paying A Social Call
- ( Grimshaw reminder about Spines Of America )
- < Charles - Hunting >
- Spines of America (Return with Hosea) (After 8 - 9pm and wait until Day)
---------------------------------------
- < Bounty Hunting - Ellie Ann Swan >
- ( Grimshaw reminder about We Loved Once And True 1 )
- A Quiet Time
---------------------------------------
- [ Valentine Dr Robbery ]
- Blessed Are The Meek
- ( camp overnight )
---------------------------------------
- < Lenny - FFF >
- We Loved Once and True 1
- Money Lending and Other Sins 3
- Pouring Forth Oil 1
- < Javier - Home Robbery >
- ( camp overnight )
---------------------------------------
- We Loved Once and True 2 - 3
- *Pouring Forth Oil 2 ( Skips at this point )
- ( Stay in hotel overnight )
---------------------------------------
- Pouring Forth Oil 3
- Fisher Of Men
- Pouring Forth Oil 4
---------------------------------------
- American Pastoral Scene
- Sheep and the Goats
- ( camp overnight )
---------------------------------------
- Strange Kindness

Another thing to note is that Paying A Social Call unlocks Quiet Time but during both missions Dutch is in completely different clothes so doing them both in the same day feels weird. Having Spines available in between helps break the 2 missions up onto 2 days which doing Exit before Social Call allows.

So basically I'm dodging the letter and dodging Dutch 😂

Aha that's perfect, I'll definitely be trying out this order

I'm finally able to catch him consistently, close to the arch that leads into the courtyard where 3 people are standing.   No exploit!   I have to time the melee button just right to tackle him and start the cutscene.  I really like being able to tackle him this early, rather to face all those brats!  Here's a video.

Hey @jimmyoneshot,  here's another timing issue.  It seems like the next mission, "Angelo Bronte, A Man Of Honor", should start immediately after "The Joys Of Civilization" which ends for me about 10:00 am.  If Arthur rides directly to meet up with Dutch and John in front of Bronte's house, that's about 10:30 am or so.   However, upon exiting Bronte's house (going off to the cemetery with John) the clock advances to 9pm.   This is really annoying.  It is a very clear time shift from morning to night with no logical explanation in the story.   There are plenty of side quests Arthur could do before meeting Dutch and John, but that just doesn't seem realistic, since there's nothing more important than rescuing Jack.   It is also annoying because several of the quests are on the way (the lady asking for donations, Brother Dorkins, etc, depending on the route) which I just have to ignore.  That said...   Dutch does say he has to fetch John (who I assume is still at camp).   But since camp is fairly close by, this might be a delay of an hour or so at most?  Still doesn't give me any satisfaction about the obvious time jump while at Bronte's.

The only activity I do before meeting Dutch and John is the fundraiser.

To make a little sense of the time jump, I go to camp to donate money, eat stew and change clothes, then I head back to Saint Denis.

1. I just do a couple of chores whenever there is time to waste/spare however I like to do all the chores on the first day before leaving to do Americans At Rest because it lets you hear a few unique conversations that happen at that time in camp. I class the first day as a way to get to know all of the camp mechanics like this:-

  • Coffee = Arthur gets coffee from Hosea at the start
  • Stew = I grab a bowl of stew at the start of the Chapter because a few other gang members seem to be eating here
  • Chores = I do all the chores in camp while listening to the conversations that take place at this time (Dutch happy with how things are, Sadie harassing Kieran, the girls complaining about working, Hosea and Lenny discussing their leads, Abigail consoling Sadie about her husband, Hosea telling John to rest for a few days, Micah pointing his gun at Arthur)
  • Shave = I shave just before heading to Americans At Rest
  • Donating food = When in Valentine I buy a piece of meat from the butcher and donate it to Pearson
  • Changing Clothes = After Americans At Rest Arthur is covered in dirt so I change clothes back at camp before heading to Without Sin
  • Donating Money = During Without Sin I rob the witness and donate whatever he gives me
  • Cooking/Crafting = At the end of the day I cook and eat one of the pieces of meat that Arthur starts the Chapter with and sometimes craft tonics from the herbs Hosea gives you at the start of the Chapter
  • Sitting by the campfire, drinking etc = I do this with the gang members just before bed
  • Sleeping = I sleep in Arthur's bed for the first time

2. Arthur's default hair at the start of the game and in the trailers/media/artwork etc is the Right Parted Style and is length 3 (3 white rectangles) and is at length 4 when Chapter 2 starts. His beard in most of the trailers/media/artwork etc is either Length 1 (clean shaven) or Length 2 but at the start of the game it is Length 3 and then Length 4 when Chapter 2 starts at which point the game tells you that your "beard is getting long".

So I like to keep his beard between Length 1 - 3 at almost all times and the only time I let it grow is at the end of Chapter 3 when Arthur leaves it to grow himself for a while. Then I get it shaved to Length 1 for a later mission which Arthur needs to tidy himself up for. As for the hair I get it cut to length 2 - 3 once in Chapter 2 before seeing Mary and then once in Chapter 4 when Arthur needs to tidy up. But I'd say it's entirely up to you what style you want.

Fascinating. Seeing as I do Who is Not Without Sin, my first day is much different. I usually shave first after listening to Dutch, donate a few dollars, donate meat to Pearson, eat stew, get Dutch's pipe request, talk to Micah and Lenny about what they saw when scouting (weird that Arthur will ask two weeks later lol), talk to John, Hosea, Susan, Greetx2 and antagonize Micah, get on my horse and leave camp to hunt.

Ye this is a possibility too. And if I recall correctly this (and possibly during while Joys Of Civilization is active) is the only chance you get to see the hidden encounter where Abigail is upset about Jack and Kieran says it is his fault because obviously after Bronte that dialogue never happens again. These ones:-

There is also the fact that sometimes Grimshaw randomly approaches you and tells you that your bedroom is upstairs on the left which is weird after Jack's party because Arthur has likely already slept in there by that point.

Do you guys fit in any item request if so please tell me

Also jimmyoneshot, wouldn’t Arthur just get a bath at hotel after americans at rest, it makes sense because he knows where the hotel is in polite society

She's never approached me on my first visit. Usually get Swanson or Javier approaching.

Several of us do Americans at Rest before Polite Society.   In fact, I do Polite Society after Sean's party.    It makes more sense that way, considering the dialog with Uncle on the way, and the fact that Arthur is clearly hung over/very tired while waiting on the girls with Uncle.  That said, Arthur knows there is a bath in the hotel, so I don't see a problem taking advantage of it, after getting all muddy fighting Tommy.

Well, that's an idea to help with that time jump.     But I can't see returning to camp, when  Dutch has just left him to go back to camp to get John, and they are returning to Saint Denis to meet him to confront Bronte.   If he had the option to return with Dutch, this might work.   Do you see the two of them if you go to camp?

Ooooo, I've never seen this convo with Kieran!    Hmmmm, maybe I'll have to rethink that.    🤔

Trying to figure out when Tahiti becomes a thing.   Anyone remember when is the first time Dutch mentions Tahiti as his Grand Plan for the gang?    I feel like I've missed something:

  1.  In Chapter 3, Lenny asks Arthur out of the blue "Wonder what Tahiti will be like?"  Weird.  Did I miss something in Chapter 3?   Or was that a glitch?
  2. Riding to Saint Denis for the first time (end of "The Battle of Shady Belle") Dutch tells Arthur they might leave the country,  "... put some ocean between us and all of this", and Arthur is surprised.  No mention of Tahiti, but sets the ground for it.
  3. At Jack's party the first night of Chapter 4,  Dutch mentions Tahiti to Arthur in a dialogue.   Dutch: "Tahiti, dear boy, Tahiti!"  Arthur: "If you say so."   This is the first time I've heard Dutch mention Tahiti, but Arthur's response sounds like he had heard it before and was skeptical as ever.
  4. Also at the party, but after that dialogue, Dutch gives one of his campfire speeches about faith and plans (with awesome lightning bolts striking behind him):   "We are gonna leave this place, and we are gonna find our own paradise...   Tahiti.  Fiji.  Australia."    So not Tahiti for sure, but as one possibility for escape into "the real new world".

I'm confused that he mentions it to Arthur like it's already a thing, and afraid I've missed something important.

I look on this forum every now and then. Can't believe it's gotten to this many pages. Below is a mission order with some notes on a playthrough from awhile ago. Obviosly, some are personal preference and require some head cannoning but some mission start times and weapons loadouts that fit the missions are listed. For example, in Revenge is a Dish best Eaten equipping one shoulder repeater because Dutch tosses you a double barreled shotgun breaking in the house that will be slinged around Arthur's back when done using it. Some are done in the same day but are listed below eachother, it's just a vague list if you're interested. Some stranger missions I do not do as they mess with the flow of the story. Some robberies and other things I do are missing as well on this list. Some options I chose go with the newspaper articles i.e. Sodom?BTG The newspaper mentions the safes were blown and Karen acted drunk I believe.

*"Go Slick" means only primary and secondary weapons are holstered. Some missions I prefer not to have Shoulder/Back weapons.

I wouldn't worry about number 1 as I've got dialogue from Lenny to Arthur in camp in Chapter 3 where he says he didn't think we would be camping there after him and Arthur cleared the place out (he's referring to Shady Belle and Preaching Forgiveness as He Went).

First time Dutch mentions Tahiti to my knowledge is when he approaches Arthur at Jack's party. He talks of going overseas before then in Battle of Shady Belle while going to Saint Denis.

Speaking of dialogue, I heard a funny line from Susan in Chapter 3 while playing poker where she said "Did you know that Bill thought Rhodes was spelt ROAD" 🤣

The beauty of this game is that you can play these in any order available and be able to justify the dialog in one way or another.

In Chapter 2 it is pretty obvious that the mission with Uncle and the girls to Valentine is the one they want you to do first, although I usually go to valentine to get my free weapons and get the pamphlet from Mr Downs, and then go get rev Swanson first.

The mission with Uncle and the girls sets up lots of future missions and it unlocks the mission to get K off the tree. I can't stand to have him tied up for weeks on end, so I get him off that tree as soon as possible.

In fact there are a lot of missions in chapter 2 that I usually just knock out quick, just not the lenny drinking mission or getting Sean, I put those off till after I go explore around and build up camp.

Oh that's funny about Lenny's comment.   Yup, that dialogue at Jack's party was the first time I heard it, too.  Just checking :D

I hadn't heard that comment from Susan.  That's hilarious.  Poor Bill, so duuuuumb.   I did finally hear his dialogue with Strauss asking what they eat in Germany  ... or Australia.  🤣

Yes by the time I've left Chapter 2 for 3, my dead eye is usually level 7 as I collect the dinosaur bones, killed the coyote for the trinket and collected about 10 valerian roots. My horses stats are full too as I make sure I get the second race with the old man on the Nokota (he shoots his horse after usually, but I dead eye and kill him as soon as he draws his gun on the horse, worth the loss of honour lol).

No you don't see Dutch or John in camp. You don't see Susan either.

Actually you're right. This reminded me, I seem to remember that if you return to camp any time before completing Angelo Bronte Man Of Honour Grimshaw is not there at all like you said.

It's also very strange that thy included dialogue what you have to do something really obscure to trigger. For example that dialogue in the above video I posted where John is arguing with Abigail at camp in which case you'd have to ride to Saint Denis with Dutch and then rather than look for Bronte like he said do a U-turn and return to camp haha

Good work goldmembber. I know what you mean about the weapons. Really annoys m when we have weapons forced on us at certain points in the game. There really should be an option to disable auto-loadout in the menu.

Also jimmyoneshot, wouldn’t Arthur just get a bath at hotel after americans at rest, it makes sense because he knows where the hotel is in polite society

Ye that's an idea too. Sometimes I do that.

Does the game always force the DA revolver in Advertising an American Art part 2?

No I don't think so but I would have to double check. I usually pick it up during Sean's home robbery which I usually do before that and can't recall it being forced there.

I know that if you have it during Urban Pursuits in Chapter 4 it gets forced which is a good reason not to grab it ha.

And during Fleeting Joy we get given on for some reason if we don't have one by then.

I usually dual two Schofields, but everytime I do that mission with Hosea, I end up with the DA revolver and the cattleman. I'm not picking it up next time I do Sean's robbery.

Does anyone know if there's a reminder in camp for An American Pastoral Scene?

I don't think there is. Micah does tell Arthur to go see him sometime.

I've been playing the game again after the new update fixed that annoying weather bug dialogue, and in the first mission something new happened for me.  I had no idea you could have dialogue with Dutch after asking Micah "Further?"  (You have to go really slow and not match speed so Micah slows down his horse).  So my question did anyone discover any dialogue that can be missed in a mission.  I posted the Dutch dialogue in mission 1 and Arthur and John's dialogue in mission 2 that I have also missed.  Does anyone know of any other examples of this in other missions?

Dutch's dialogue is at 6:40 in the clip.

Arthur, John and Javiers dialogue is at 16:05 in the second clip.

I charted which missions I did on which day in chapter 2 and here's the result: Link

The empty days are days spent traveling, and missions that take place over multiple days are marked with Roman numerals (e.g. Exit Pursued I and II). I wanted to do Javier's robbery mission earlier but he decided to disappear so I had to fit him in after Pouring Forth Oil instead, but other than that I'm mostly happy with it.

A whole chunk of dialogue between John and Charles can easily be missed during "Bare Knuckle Friendships" if you don't manage your walking speed properly. It's very tricky.

Here's the entire discussion (high honor).

Spoiler

Charles Smith: This way. My bag's on the dockside. So... what happened?
John Marston: You mean, back then? Arthur helped me get out... gave me a chance to... live, I guess. You-you know that, Arthur...
Charles Smith: Sure. Word got to me up North, so I went back and buried him and Miss Grimshaw.
John Marston: I had to run... if any of us had been found we'd have...
Charles Smith: Of course. I understand... He's where he would have wanted to be... a pretty hillside... facing the evening sun...
John Marston: He gave me his satchel. With some of his things in it. Remember that journal he always drew in? I got it... I'm a bit of a draftsman myself nowadays.
Charles Smith: He was a good man... as much as any of us could be...
John Marston: Getting sick like that has to rattle a feller.
Charles Smith: Rattle him or... give him some kind of understanding... what his life was really all about.
John Marston: Yeah... that makes sense.
Charles Smith: Anyway, I heard all of you were dead, or I might have come looking...
John Marston: And me the same about you.
Charles Smith: Dutch?
John Marston: Who knows? Dead, maybe. I'm not sure... I heard all kind of things, but one thing I know, he ain't around here... I ain't heard nothing real in years, since... well... that time.
Charles Smith: Nor me. Micah?
John Marston: I hope that bastard is dead. You know he was the one speaking to them agents?
Charles Smith: What?
John Marston: Putting them on us the whole time... or since before I got off Sisika.
Charles Smith: They picked up Strauss. The agents. Made a real mess of him. I heard he died in custody, never said a word.
John Marston: I guess some folk is strong in ways you can't see.
Charles Smith: Everything that happened... all those deaths... Micah?
John Marston: None of us is innocent in that... Dutch least of all... but I don't think we would'a had to make those calls. All that mayhem. If it wasn't for...
Charles Smith: We were on a very bad path...
John Marston: And Micah Bell dragged us into the abyss.
Charles Smith: It never ends well... gangs like ours don't ride off into the sunset. Not these days.
John Marston: Maybe Arthur's sunset's the best we can hope for.
Charles Smith: I actually believed it, you know... once... The original plan... that we'd have a ranch one day... horses, cattle, big noisy dinners... all of us living free and honest.
John Marston: Funny you should say that. That's what I'm hoping for this place in the high country. Only, it's just me and Uncle at the moment. And maybe Abigail and Jack if they'll take me back. And the ranch is... well, wait 'til you see the ranch. I'll let you decide what you think. I think it's mighty fine. Or has the potential to be.
Charles Smith: You're a lucky man, John. I always thought you might be.
John Marston: I hope you'll stay with us.
Charles Smith: I will... for a while.
John Marston: Okay. Where's your bag?
Charles Smith: Over there. It's where I left it.

I do remember that one, that was awfully brutal getting the full conversation.  Another one I remember having trouble with is the Micah companion mission where he says he slept with Jenny.

So I was reading the older posts and wanted to summarize the arguments/rationale/conclusions that were made. I think that'd be helpful for people who want to contribute to the topic but don't feel like going through hundreds of pages. This is only the first chapter done, let me know if I missed anything.

(Sorry for not giving credit. This is partly from memory and I'm not always sure who made a point first)

CHAPTER I: COLTER
Outlaws from the West
Enter, Pursued by a Memory
---------------------------------------
The Aftermath of Genesis
Old Friends
---------------------------------------
Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?
---------------------------------------
Eastward Bound

Spoiler

The general consensus on the forum is Genesis before Old Friends, but there's no hard evidence for a particular order. The game does a good job of changing the dialogue depending on your choice. For example, in genesis Arthur and Charles will mention the events of old friends if and only if that mission has already been played. So the order of these missions comes down to personal preference.

Here are the main points that everyone brought up:

Old Friends -> Genesis

  • Kieran interaction -- Starting with Old Friends lets you talk to Kieran at colter between missions. So you get some extra dialogue there.

Old Friends <- Genesis

  • Arthur's priority -- It makes more sense to feed the gang before raiding an O'Driscoll camp.
  • Narrative pacing -- Old Friends leads directly into Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall. Putting Genesis in between those missions can break the story momentum for some. Genesis also gives a break from all the gunplay in the first two missions.
  • Shot continuity -- In Genesis, Pearson clears a pot and other items off his table. In Old Friends, the table has been cleared no matter which mission you did first. [edit: jimmyoneshot found that an empty table is just the default game state outside of genesis]

Old Friends <--> Genesis

  • Dutch's dialogue -- In Old Friends dutch says 'Now you might fancy living on deer piss and rabbit sh*t... I'm getting too old for that life.' This can work for both orders. Either you went hunting already and Dutch is making light of the deer you caught, or you haven't gone yet and really are living on deer piss and rabbit sh*t.
  • Weather -- People used to say that Genesis has milder weather than Old Friends, which would place it after, but it looks like both have a similar temperature, snowfall, and cloud cover. In genesis Charles says the weather has improved, but this is probably in relation to the blizzard at the start of the game.
  • Time of day -- Old Friends happens in the late afternoon/evening, Genesis in the morning. Since we get control of Arthur early morning, the game might be suggesting that Genesis goes first. That order keeps things nice and simple with both missions on the same day. If we play Old Friends first, the current day ends and Genesis takes place on some other morning, which can feel more convoluted. But some might prefer having more playable days in colter since the first chapter is so short.
