RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 - "Chronological" Mission Order - Input Welcome!

Lol thanks it definitely does look better when the bear charges that way and you’re right about the dialogue seeming like you chose split up because the way Hosea talks about how you saved his life it works better if you go and find him instead of already being there.

Yep exactly. Both ways kind of fit but as you said this way clearly fits more.

The same for the following mission 'Spines Of America' - after it's finished no matter what Hosea says "Hello Sheamus. We met your cousins. Nice People" yet the only way Hosea meets them is if you choose to to the mission in the day when the option appears to do it day or night

@jimmyoneshot,

I have been trying for a long time now to get Pearson's dialogue about the trapper. After "Exit pursued by a bruised ego", I donate to Pearson: 2x perfect deer pelt, 2x perfect buck pelt, 2x squirrel pelt, 5x perfect rabbit pelt. After hunting with Charles, I donate 1 perfect pronghorn doe pelt and 1 perfect pronghorn buck carcass. No dialogue. One time donated 2 perfect deer pelt, 1 perfect buck pelt, and 1 perfect buck carcass after Polite Society, Valentine style. No dialogue from  Pearson after uncle mission. I do not understand what is going on.

Yep it's ridiculous. Especially since the game tells you to go to him for info on the trapper. I was actually going to try what you have just mentioned next so that saves me some time ha. Thanks.

The one time I got it was when I donated to him at the very start of Chapter 2 without even leaving camp but I've tried the same since and nothing. I'm wondering if it's a case of just staying in the donate menu without actually selling anything and just waiting until he says it. I'll let you know.

Just wondering do you do the final part that is up at the waterfall near Annesburg during chapter 4? I remember seeing the icon up there before I even went to Guarma. I don’t think it would feel right to travel up to that area before the gang makes camp at shady belle.

Yep I always do that in Chapter IV. That final part only unlocks after the card game on the boat mission (A Fine Night of Debauchery) in Chapter 4 too so you already would be at Shady Belle at that point. On my first playthrough I just explored everywhere so did all the 4 gunslingers at once but it really makes more sense to do them when the story takes you near I think.

Oops I meant Beavers creek camp. Should Arthur really travel that far north before the story takes him there? As I said like on the first page of this thread I did that all wrong the first time. I did the hot air ballon mission instead of the moving camp up to beavers creek mission and when that mission ends after the balloon crash you’re already up near Annesburg so I did the final gunslinger mission and all of the Edith downes missions to the point where Arthur helps her and her son get away. Basically I saw Annesburg and surrounding areas earlier than I should have. When I went back and did the move camp to beavers creek mission it ended with Arthur seeing Edith go into a room with man as if I hadn’t seen her in a long while... even though I’d just helped escape. I nearly slapped myself.

As for Pearson and the trapper I just got his dialogue about it when I delivered a perfect doe carcass to him. The only mission available at the time was Pouring forth oil part1 and I had already purchased the camp craft upgrade from the ledger after he had talked about that earlier, if that’s even matters.

Do you know what point the rescue Bill side mission triggers? I had Javier ride up to me about it when I was on my way to steal the first oil wagon. What’s the earliest this can happen? It didn’t feel quite right here because I could see the oil wagon riding in the distance and after I accepted javiers request it disappeared.

Lol it’s like I’ve got OCD over this sh*t.

Ah right I thought you may have meant Beaver Hollow actually. In that case I know what you are saying about Annesburg but the thing is when you go there in Chapter 4 there isn't anything to do there anyway so it doesn't really matter. Plus when Arthur goes there in the story he doesn't act as if this is the first time he's been there whereas, with Saint Denis and Rhodes etc for example, I think going to those places before the story takes you there doesn't make much sense because before entering Saint Denis in the story Dutch and Arthur look at it from afar like it's the first time they've been there.

Plus going to Annesburg as part of the gunslingers mission takes you from Saint Denis straight through Van Horn where you can do the freaks stranger mission as you are passing. Besides that there isn't any other story related reason reason to go to or through Van Horn.

And I really don't think the freaks stranger mission and the final gunslingers mission suit being done by Chapter 5/6 Arthur because of his:-

Spoiler

Tuberculosis. In fact I like to have all of the stranger missions that are available out the way before the end of chapter 4 and then I only have to do stranger missions that become available in chapter 5 and 6. These all seem much more suited to the new good guy sick Arthur if that makes sense whereas the older ones from earlier chapters really don't.

That thing you noticed with Mrs Downes is a known bug too that a lot of people have came across. I actually think it is right to do the balloon mission first before clearing out beaver hollow but you should return to Dutch straight after doing it I think and then do the beaver hollow story missions which lead to what you saw and THEN do the side missions where you help the Downes. Basically R* f*cked up and should have locked those missions until after you see her during the Chapter 6 story missions. A lot of people likely did what you did i.e. the balloon mission and then stayed in the area where it ends to do some other stuff which is completely natural.

It's strange that you mention the Bill rescue mission as I've just been waiting for that oil wagon to move an bumped into Javier so it must be that area where it triggers. Starting that encounter also seemed to make the oil wagon start moving for me. I'll look into it further and let you know.

Ha. I think we are all just deep thinkers.

During pouring Forth Oil Part 1 you need to steal an oil wagon. It is usually inside a compound but sometimes it ca move to Valentine and you can steal it there or on the road which is much easier.

Chapter 1: I was in a little debate about which should I do first. Bill or Pearson? I came with the conclusion of going hunting first, Bills mission is more straight forward to Who the hell is Leviticus Cornwall? Yes I know doing this mission before The aftermath of Genesis adds an extra dialogue, I don't know I'm still 50/50.

I'm very OCD about visiting new places on the map - I won't go to a new town unless and until the game takes me there. But once it does, I spend as much time as I need exploring the area.

But the game actually took me to Annesburg early on in Chapter 2 - after hunting the bear with Hosea, I came across a lady stuck under a horse on my way back home, and it seemed only appropriate for my highly honorable Arthur that I took her where she needed to go.....which was Annesburg.

After having rode all the way there, I thought it was only fair and reasonable for Arthur to then stop and have a look around.

So in that context, it wouldn't seem out of character for Arthur - once he found out that Calloway was up there - to head back to Annesburg to finish that story thread......

Same. I did it on my first playthrough because I didn't know how big the map was etc but then I regretted it and have always stayed in the state that I'm currently in in my replays since unless the game takes me elsewhere as you said. I think it just feels more special to go to Rhodes and Saint Denis for the first time as part of the story itself too.

You are right about Annesburg too. Although I didn't need to go to the town itself when I took the Legendary Bear Pelt to the trapper which is strange. I don't have any problem with going there earlier in the game though especially since the gunslinger stranger mission takes you right there. I class Annesburg as a 'secondary' town with the main towns/cities being Valentine, Rhodes and Saint Denis in my opinion.

Does Arthur actually get told Calloway is up there? I thought the saint Denis and Annesburg Calloway  mission icons appeared at certain points and it’s like Arthur just randomly stumbles upon them when he goes to them with out actually knowing they’d be there. If that makes sense.

That girl you took home to Annesburg, was that the girl under the horse in the middle of the heartlands? I got that too on the way back from hunting the bear but her home was in valentine.

I got saint denis spoiled for me before chapter 4 on my first play through because I had that event where you take the guy to the doctor where his arm gets amputated. They should’ve locked some of these encounters until you reach certain chapters. I really ruined the moment later on when you first go to the city.

Are you sure the balloon mission should be done first? I did do that first because I cared about John more than anything but when you finally get control after getting back from guarma everyone at camp is wondering what to do next and Arthur says he’ll talk to Dutch making it seem like you should see him ASAP.

Also during the balloon mission when you’re flying back from the prison island and you see Sadie being chased down van horn is there a reason she’s that far north? Did she say she was going to meet them up there or did they just coincendently see her as they flew by?

Anyway back to chapter 2... I actually stole the oil wagon near valentine the first time but was killed by lawmen in the heartlands because I didn’t stop a witness. I was only interrupted by Javier about bill the second time I tried to get to the wagon. After I rescued bill both wagons were at the oil factory.

To be honest I can't remember as in depth because it's been a while since I replayed Chapter 4 now because I've been replaying Chapter 2 so much ha. I'll have to recheck this when I'm done with chapter 3 and get back to you. I think the main reason was that during the murfree country mission Arthur has the option to take money from the woman who's daughter he returns from the cave or nicely refuse it and he seems to have these options for a lot of the other missions after...

Spoiler

he realises he has tuberculosis and changes his ways. Previously he just took money whenever it was offered. So my opinion is that doing this mission after Arthur has been diagnosed makes the most sense and Arthur gets diagnosed on the way to that balloon mission

I'm not 100% on this though.

Also what I normally do when it is in Valentine is put my mask on and hogtie the cornwall guard who should be standing near it and then ride off with it and whistle my horse to follow. If there are any witnesses it won't matter because I had my mask on. I've never failed doing it that way if that helps.

I just think that Guarma and then moving to Beavers Hollow feels more like a compete arc for chapter 5 then riding to saint denis to help John (and finding out about the illness) works as a begginging for the depressing chapter 6. But yeah I’m  getting too far ahead here I’m sorry, we’ll get to all this much later lol.

So you’re experimenting with chapter 3 now? Are you satisfied with your chapter 2 and officially moved on?

Ha. Ye I can't really comment too much until I'm back into that chapter. I feel sad in those late chapters too tbh and wish chapter 2 could last forever.

  2. Americans at Rest
  3. Who is Not Without Sin
  4. The First Shall be The Last
  5. Paying a Social Call
  6. Bounty Mission - Good Honest Snake Oil
  7. Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego
  8. Spines of America
  9. Money Lending and Other Sins I, II and III
  10. We Loved Once and True I, II and III
  11. Bounty Mission - Ellie Anne Swan
  12. A Quiet Time
  13. Activity - Home Robbery (Javier)
  14. Blessed Are The Meek
  15. Pouring Forth Oil I
  16. Activity - Hunting (Charles)
  17. Pouring Forth Oil II & III
  18. A Fisher Of Men

So when John first mentions the oil wagons you go hunting with Charles before getting a wagon? What do you do with the bison pelt you’re asked to stow on your horse?

With the letter from Mary, I remember the first time Susan came up to me telling me I’d received a letter but that didn’t happen this time. If I walk around camp long enough after getting back from Thomas Downes I assume she should come see me at some point. After which mission does the letter icon first appear?

Yep the reason I do that is you have to do something like a small mission to trigger the oil wagon to move out of the compound it seems and I think doing that one will trigger it too but I'm just double checking that as we speak. Doing the 2nd bounty mission definitely triggers it to move to Valentine. It's best to do it in the morning though because I've tried this at night and after I finished the bounty mission John had already got the wagon. So what I do now is camp something outside the camp until morning and then go to camp and Grimshaw will approach me to speak to John so I do and carry on from there.

Are you sure she ever does that? I thought I remembered her doing that once too but then I thought I may have been getting mixed up with when she tells you John wants to speak to you. I know she sometimes comes over and says that she has heard that Mary Gillis is about in town or something like that but not that a letter has arrived for you.

I'm doing one final final quick playthrough of Chapter 2 now though.

My memory is that you get sent on a bit of a wild goose chase to find Calloway - first you go back to the bar in Valentine, and they tell you he's on a boat in St. Denis; you get to St. Denis, and you find Calloway, but he says you've got to go find Slim Grant in Annesburg. You get to Annesburg.....and then you're told Grant is out chasing outlaws near Beaver Hollow. It's only then that you trigger the action part of the mission.

The girl I took home I found up in the Grizzlies East, I believe, near Moonstone Pond. Almost everyone I've seen got the same location as you did and the request to take her back to Valentine. It seems mine was the rarer version!

I did as well - but thankfully not until I had about two missions left in Chapter 3, so not too soon.....I did even go into Bluewater Marsh until I was halfway through the third chapter!

Yeah I’m 100% sure she told me a letter had arrived, I thought her doing that actually triggered the letter to be there but obviously not. What are the prerequisites for the letter mission to unclock?

So I just did Fisher of Men and then Pouring Oil part 4 and after that it left only Micah’s second mission up near strawberry left but not long after I got ambushed by some pricks and died. When I respawned there was alsothe mission for John in Valentine and the mission description says “John told you he was trying to get something going in valentine”. Does he say that at the end of Pouring Oil 4 or earlier? I don’t remember him saying anything about it.

For the letter to be there you need to have completed 'Paying A Social Call' and 'Money Lending and Other Sins Parts I and II'.

Maybe her approaching you is random out I'll keep an eye out myself.

When I respawned there was alsothe mission for John in Valentine and the mission description says “John told you he was trying to get something going in valentine”. Does he say that at the end of Pouring Oil 4 or earlier? I don’t remember him saying anything about it.

Yep he says that at the end Of Pouring Forth Oil Part 4 after the train robbery.

I too have only the Micah mission and Sheep and The Goats (John's mission in Valentine) available at that point. I always do the Micah mission first though as it makes sense because:-

a) as you mentioned it is the only mission available straight after Pouring Forth Oil 4 so is good to do while you wait for John's mission to unlock

b) the sheep and the goats is where sh*t really hits the fan in Valentine and the gang are then forced to move which takes part in the next mission 'A Strange Kindness' which is unlocked as soon as sheep and the goats is finished so it makes sense to do that next

I had forgetten how frequent these bloody ambushes on the roads were, I die nearly every time lol. I got 100% completion on my main save and thought I was a master at the game by now but it’s hard with Arthur’s low health meter at this early point in the game.

How many times have you done chapter 2 now and do you still watch all the cutscenes every time or do you skip them?

Anyone have a good recommendation for a time that makes sense within the narrative in Chapter 2 to take a day and snag the White Arabian? Been thinking after Spines of America, before Money Lending and Other Sins..

I do I would do it myself after the game opened up and I was able to open more of the map as there is a spot near Strawberry one can get the Semi-auto shotgun and a couple of spots one can access early on tho they open later in side missions to get better weaponry-my reason is I not remember the Mission sequences but would want something for Bear and Wolves better than the Cattleman and Carbine Repeater when I go up [[I am actually right there looking for the Arabian at this very moment th I finished the game without it-just colltcting some horses and stuff.]]

I've pretty much memorised a lot of them now so I do okay. Sometimes it's good to just do a u turn get some distance and o another u turn and start dead eyeing them one at a time.

I also know where a lot of the valerian roots are early on and drink them as I go as well as doing chores and finding dinosaur bones etc to get my dead eye up fast.

I've replayed Chapter 2 a ridiculous number of times now ha. I skip them mostly when I'm experimenting trying to find out the best mission order etc  but if I'm doing a 'proper' playthrough I watch them all.

@jimmyoneshot,

I've just discovered something. It seems in order to get Pearsons dialogue about the trapper you need to actually carry a dead animal body to him and then choose donate. So when I go on my first hunt I stow an unskinned deer or whatever on my horse and then when I get back to camp I carry it to him on my shoulder and while it is still on my shoulder I choose the donate option when facing him.

I never actually knew you could do this before and didn't think there was any point in bringing dead animals back to camp besides it being for show. Doing this also allows you to donate the animals carcass in the menu. Hope that helps.

This topic got completely derailed when you guys stopped listening to me... Juuust kidding. I can't believe how long this game can be... And how jacked up you have chapter 2...

What exactly are you basing your playthrough on? Like the theme..I get chronological in a way.. But based on characters dialogue? Your vuew on Arthur? Time frame to complete the story?

Not nit picking.. Just love the conversation :)

@Urban Legends

I believe most of us are basing it off a variety of factors:

-The order that makes the most sense from a narrative perspective

-The order that is most conducive to 'role play' and immersion into the world

-The order that maximizes dialogue options and NPC interactions in and out of camp

Thanks, for the suggestion about Pearson's dialogue for the trapper information. I will try what you said when I replay chapter 2.

In chapter2, for me, I would snag the White Arabian after Spines of America, Money Lending and Other Sins, and We Loved Once and True. After you meet Mary at the train station in Valentine, she will say "you never change". To make sense of the narrative in Chapter 2, I will rob people at the train stations, shop robbery (Valentine), home robbery (Javier), go up north and kill Flaco Hernandez. On my way back south, I would stop at Lake Isabella to snag the White Arabian. I usually have to camp for a few days and look in the mornings for the horse.

Thanks @Psycho18

I really wish there was a way to get the Tiger Stripes Mustang earlier. Far and away my favorite horse.
