Either San Andreas or IV, seeing as San Andreas has the grind for stats like for the underwater Wu-Zi mission, or learning to fly.

San Andreas has the longest storyline in all the GTA series. Even without Zero’s missions, casino heist and the garage missions after driving school it is still about 87 missions. GTA IV had roughly the same amount, but it doesn’t require much grinding to complete it. San Andreas on the other hand needed you to upgrade lung capacity to proceed with the Amphibious Assault mission, followed by the need to get more gang territories before you can trigger End of the Line. With GTA IV it was as simple as turning up and doing it. Not to mention when it comes to mission failures, San Andreas would’ve required you start all over again after going back to the trigger point, whereas GTA IV let you try again from the phone. Some missions needed to be triggered at a certain time in both games.

Story-wise, I'm pretty sure it's IV.

Unless it's San Andreas? I'm pretty sure that one has like, exactly 100 story missions. Both are definitely contenders for the longest though.

San Andreas. I believe IV comes in second place and V comes in third.

Cutscenes are counted? San Andreas might have more than 100 missions, but a very few of them are over the 10 minutes.

If you look on speedrun.com (which still remain a good reference even if the majority of us aren't speedrunners) you can notice that the Any% difference between GTA San Andreas and GTA IV is almost negligible... San Andreas is a bit longer, but I think that with cutscenes included the result would be different (in a speedrun ofc all the cutscenes are skipped). Always according to speedrun.com, this is the correct leaderboard (Any% - in these speedruns the goal is to reach the last mission in the minimum amount of time):

1) GTA V: https://www.speedrun.com/gtav#Any

2) GTA SA: https://www.speedrun.com/gtasa#Any

3) GTA VCS (Real Time): https://www.speedrun.com/gtavcs

4) GTA IV: https://www.speedrun.com/gtaiv#Any

5) GTA CW (No save glitch): https://www.speedrun.com/gtacw#Any_no_save_glitch

6) GTA LCS (Real Time): https://www.speedrun.com/gtalcs

7) GTA 3: https://www.speedrun.com/gtaiii

😎 GTA VC (Japan PC release - No glitches): https://www.speedrun.com/gtavc#Any_No_SSU

GTA V is probably at the top of this leaderboard because of it has more non-skippable missions, if you want to reach the last mission you have to do all the heists and all the previous quests. IMO GTA V, IV and SA have more or less the same lenght, the only things that could change from a player to another probably depends on how you play and on how much you like these games. I've never played VCS and CW, but it's interesting to have them in such a high place... VC could be completed in less than a hour if you're very good at the game :)

Actually hold on a second. I did a comparison based on the GTA series videos gameplay. And as it appears GTA V, IV, SA all seem to be quite similar in length(13-14 hours) but be advised that V and IV have a lot more cinematic cutscene time in comparison to SA. Also note that I only counted ONE of the possible paths and setups for V's heists.

According to howlongtobeat.com, the median lengths of story playthroughs in order:
1. San Andreas - 32 Hours
2. GTA V - 31 Hours
3. GTA IV - 28 Hours
4. Vice City - 20 Hours
5. GTA III - 16½ Hours
I omitted spin-offs because the amount of polled players was significantly lower.

To be fair one has to wonder if this median lenght takes in factor missions difficulty (as if if this length takes as a scale if someone pretty much runs through missions or it also counts in possible retries and so on, mission preparation, etc).

I know, its awfully nitpicking

I think it does, and also see nothing wrong in it.
