I'll post a video later today showing that I have the Thomas Downes mission and the Valentine bank robbery available at the same time and when I start the bank robbery, Strauss comes up and says Downes is dead. Eric Cartman
thomas downes mission is not missable. It is a "yellow icon" main mission from strauss. All other straus missions are missable but not this one.

I'm in chapter 3 with Downes still available to collect money from and the Valentine bank robbery for Bill. If I start the robbery Strauss will come up and tell me the debtor Thomas Downes has died and his wife is handling the debt now. As part of the mission I have to go to Downes ranch and collect the money. I know but Arthur doesn't know who that was. Arthur interacts with him early on when you first arrive in Valentine. Downes is the man collecting money for the poor. I also noticed that after this he starts to have a cough. Nothing like what comes later, but it is noticable. Also just to through this out there, TB can sit dormant in your body for years before you become symptomatic. It could be Downes had nothing to do with it, Arthur was already infected but his overall heath was fine and his body was able to fight the infection. Then his immune system becomes compromised by the stress of running from the law for so long and then the Guarma misadventure, and he gets full blow active TB. txzz0
I remember, if you decide to go fishing with Hosea and Dutch after that mission with Sheriff Gray in Rhodes, he will start coughing on the boat while singing with Hosea and Dutch. I noticed that in my second playthrough and i'm 100% sure it is the first time he actually shows signs of it after the mission with Mr Downes. Badman_
He coughs once at the beginning of Chapter 3 (The New South), while rescuing Jack (Chapter 4) and during one of the Strauss missions in Saint Denis. It becomes more noticeable and frequent after the mission where the gang kills Angelo Bronte. After you return from Guarma Arthur's stats will change to "unwell", meaning that he's sick, but still doesn't what is exactly. It's only after the "Fork In The Road" mission that he will diagnosed with TB.
KingArthur777
The first signs I noticed were back in chapter 2!! During the homestead robbery with Javier, Arthur and him push a crate off of a loot box. During and after pushing this, he has a small coughing fit. Javier's homestead robbery is always after the Thomas Downes mission, never before. ballstorture

I am playing in 1.0, I have not done Downes' mission, but I did steal on the farm with Javier. All this is very interesting since you could intuit that there are several ways to counteract TB and therefore (maybe) it could be avoided and discover another end. I doubt it, but it's funny how different people in different parts lived different situations. There is something, I don't know what, but something. That is not like that. CosmicBuffalo
The exact mission where Arthur begins coughing is called a Fork in the Road and it's a hidden mission in Chapter 5...you are on your way to meet Sadie in Saint Denis for a mission called Icarus and Friends. However, if you want Arthur to look healthy, you must make a save before Banking, the Old American Art the last story mission of Chapter 4. Once you leave Saint Denis into Chapter 5, Arthur's eyes are red and he looks high in the remaining cut scenes. JumpingGigawatts
I can’t believe how clearly signposted Arthur’s sickness really is until my second playthrough. From the moment he is coughed on, the cutscene takes a reflective moment. From there, I noticed every time Arthur coughed, which is more than you think. wangsparkinglot
UrSource4gameInfo
Arthurs face turned white, and his eyes were red right after you get back from Guarma. Before then he just sometimes coughs, but I would make a save right before you do the mission where you have to collect the debt from the downs because that's when Arthur is exposed to TB.
