Grotti Vigilante

Similar Characters in 3D and HD Universes.

Recommended Posts

Grotti Vigilante

Has anyone noticed that there are a lot of characters in the HD Universe that are similar to the previous 3D Universe? I'm sure this is no coincidence given Rockstar's great attention to detail in many of their games, but I thought it would be interesting to make a thread about all the characters that are similar in nature. I'll start off by giving a few, and I'll leave the rest to you lot. This isn't just about similar characters though, I expect you will all very much end up in debates over which character is more similar to which and whose more equivalent to who etc., so do enjoy all of the thought provoking ideas you may have. Anyway, to start it off we have...

  • Corrupt Law Enforcement Official: I've no doubt some of you would've seen the similarities between Steve Haines in GTA V and Frank Tenpenny in San Andreas. Both corrupt law enforcers who blackmail the protagonists into doing their dirty work with them only to meet their end at the final mission (if Deathwish is selected in GTA V) after their grasp on the main characters are lost.
  • Important and Helpful Government Official: I also expect some to have seen the similarities between the U.L. Paper contact and Mike Toreno, who are both agents of an undisclosed agency who have the protagonist work for them in exchange for giving the main character what they want near the end of the game, in both cases a particular person but for different reasons.
  • The Annoying Girlfriends: Now Maria Latore may not count since she never officially dated Claude in GTA III, but I noticed this parallel with Ashley Butler just earlier today. They are both burdens on the protagonist who end up getting them in trouble with local mobsters and stick with them until the end of the game. Claude got lucky, but Johnny didn't so much since he lost his ways.

I could go further but I don't want to steal all the fun from you lot. So do have fun drawing similar characters between the 3D and HD Universes of Grand Theft Auto. My only request is you keep it to them two universes. Tempting as it may be I don't yet wish to draw parallels between GTA and Red Dead characters. But other than that, proceed ahead...

the protagonists in the III and HD era are both similar because they're both protagonists.

OT - You're talking about literary tropes and archetypes that show up in literally any form of media. Nothing really new here?

Lamar kinda = Ryder. A fun, quirky sidekick in the same gang as a protagonist. Too bad Ryder goes in a different direction.

This doesn't sound right... Lamar is just a complete idiot which is very loyal to his gang/family/whatever, Ryder is the complete opposite, he's cynical and doesn't give a damn about GSF.

I don't think there is an equivalent for Lamar in GTA SA. It should be a character that it's loyal to his family and at the same time it's a troublemaker.

Ryder isn't loyal but he is definitely an idiot.

I remember when Osho used to moan all the time how certain HD era characters were just "rehashes" like it was a bad thing. It's actually quite interesting to about. In some cases they're more direct nods and in other cases they just boil down to coincidence seeing that the series covers many archetypes so similarities are bound to happen at some point.

Anyway..

-Francis = Ray Machowski. Both are corrupt cops who use the protagonists to do their dirty work. Just like how Ray is being investigated by internal affairs for his links with the Yakuza Francis faces similar pressures from people like Tom Goldberg who threaten to expose his own corruption..

-Billy Grey = Big Mitch Baker. Not sure how many would agree. The only thing I can draw is they're both chapter presidents of their respective biker clubs.

Vinnie from Liberty City Stories and the other Vinnie from Advance. Both have identical names, are antagonists, bosses and both give a suspiciously similar mission (which Rockstar Leeds *might* have borrowed from), which involves a Banshee and the Pay n' Spray.

EDIT: Also the latin-american sidekick: Jimmy Hernandez and Andreas Sanchez, both Mexican-American, supporting characters who work for the antagonist, talk little, and betrays the antagonist just to get killed in the end. And to be honest, I kinda liked them, especially Sanchez, he deserved more screentime.

ontopic: I find little similarities between Stretch and Big Smoke/Ryder, as they were in the same gang as the protags Franklin and CJ but then betrayal happened

Ray Machowski=Francis McReary, both are corrupt cops who use protagonists to do their dirty work. Also, Ray Machowski is alive at the end of the game, GTA III, which is another reason as to why I personally believe the Kill Derrick option is canon.

Mike Toreno=United Liberty Paper Contact, self explanatory

Donald Love=Thomas Stubbs III, for the same basic reason as Ray and Francis, only they’re both corrupt politicians. Also, similarly to Ray, Donald used Claude. However, Francis used Niko Bellic while Thomas Stubbs III used Johnny Klebitz.

Salvatore Leone=Jimmy Pegorino, as a matter of fact, I think I heard on GTA Wikia that Jimmy P is actually based on Salvatore Leone.

But Derrick is a sympathetic figure, unlike Francis.

We're talking about similar characters from 3D and HD universes, NOT who's a sympathetic figure and who isn't.

You know, before someone brought up Ray Machowski, I never would've guessed that Francis had his own 3D counterpart. I always assumed him to be similar to Tenpenny in being a corrupt cop who blackmails the protagonist into doing his dirty work. In that regard he is, but Machowski is also a good match given he's a corrupt Liberty City cop who gives the protagonist jobs. It's the first double-equivalent I've seen at this point.

The thing is, having a similar character in 3D version doesn't make either of choices canon.

Salvatore Leone - James Pegorino

Although the Leones are more powerful than the Pegorinos

Hmmm nice bike

Zero and Lester, although Zero is way less annoying and more likeable of a character. Lester just comes off like a f*cking creep.

Jimmy Pegorino is basically Salvatore Leone in the HD era with very few differences, Salvatore was better though.

Dimitri is similar to Catalina too, as they both served as allies to the protagonist and turned on them and betrayed everybody they come across. This is out of context but Dimitri is quite similar to Neyla from Sly Cooper as well. He just reminds of a lot female characters in games.

I made a topic about the Spanish Lords being the HD counterparts of the Diablos sometime ago, because they are very similar, both of them are latino gangs (mostly puerto-rican), both of them use blue and red as one of their colors, both of them have a crown as as symbol, and both of them are based on the Latin Kings. However, they have also some differences, like the Spanish Lords being stronger than the Diablos

Maybe:

- Niko Bellic : Vic Vance. Soldiers at least once, with more outstanding good traits than the other protagonists.

- Roman Bellic : Lance Vance (VCS' personality). The cheerful siblings who always try to make profits the wrong way, leading to unpredictable bad situations.

- Johnny Klebitz : "Big" Mitch Baker. Calm, but ruthless biker presidents who always consider their club a family and have a very noticeable hatred for the law. And Tommy in some ways? I don't know, for some reason he always reminds me of him.

- Jim Fitzgerald : Cesar Vialpando. Clever gangsters who usually manage to gather some very helpful information and set good plans, while also being so effective in fights.

- Billy Grey : Frank Tenpenny. While not a corrupt police officer, he is very traitorous towards his own club and brothers, which makes him corrupt even within his own gang. He also has memorable lines, and many of them are humorous. Some would argue that Billy might be more similar to Big Smoke than Tenpenny, but I disagree, because what makes him more similar to Tenpenny is the fact that both of them are known for being very bossy, sadistic and humorous.

- Brian Jeremy : Eddie Pulaski. Blinded side-kicks of the antagonist who act even more of douches to the protagonist than the antagonist himself.

- Mikhail Faustin : Ricardo Diaz. Believable psychopath crime bosses who hire protagonists, but get killed by them later.

- Manny Escuela : OG Loc. Try-hard rappers who want to make a name of themselves, but unsurprisingly, never taken seriously.

- Liz Torres : Catalina. Maniac, unpredictable female drug lords.

- Playboy X : Jizzy B. Gangsters who see themselves as the real deal, the "playa", and think they know and own everything.

- Francis McReary : Leon McAffrey. All I can say is that both of them are corrupt police officers who blackmail the protagonists to do their dirty work for a certain time.

- Ray Boccino : Sonny Forelli. Shady, classic and ruthless Italian mobsters with some serious connections, even though the first is a capo, while the later is the don.

- U.L. Contact : Mike Toreno. Corrupt government agents who are likable, and very helpful and honest to the protagonist.

- Tom Stubbs III : Colonel Cortez. Corrupt, but likable law men who are always calm, and are in very good terms with the protagonist.

- "Gay" Tony Prince : Ken Rosenberg. Both have a very similar paranoid attitude.

- Luis Lopez : Toni Cipriani. Not so many similarities anyway. Two protagonists who have mothers who don't respect them that much, and are very loyal to their bosses. And despite being protagonists, they just feel like side characters within their respective storylines, while the main focus centers on their bosses.

Some of them aren't really THAT similar, but I tried to make them as close as I find them to be. And by the way, I didn't arrange them based only on their positions and lifestyles, but more on their roles, personalities and overall attitude. That's why I listed Tenpenny alongside Billy, rather than Francis McReary, which also explains why I put Colonel Cortez besides Tom Stubbs, rather than listing Donald Love in behalf of the former.

Didn't include GTA V's characters since most of them can't be taken seriously.

In addition to my list:

- Dimitri Rascalov : Armando Mendez. Both are ruthless leaders of powerful criminal organizations who force the protagonist to work for them to make up for a loss the later caused, making it seem like there's going to be some kind of an alliance between the two, only to double-cross him after he gets the job done, trying to get him killed. Not to mention that both kidnap a character that's very close to the protagonist.

- Jimmy Pegorino : Salvatore Leone (LCS only). Both are paranoid mob bosses who try their best to spread the power of their crime organizations and improve their reputation within the criminal underworld. Salvatore and the Leones are obviously more powerful than Jimmy and the Pegorinos, but still not as much as they became in GTA III.

- Dwayne Forge : Madd Dogg. Both are black middle-age men who suffered from depression due to their lose of almost everything they had. Madd Dogg retrieves what he lost, though, as opposed to Dwayne, who stays as he is even in case he is spared.

- Bernie Crane (originally Florian Cravic) : Reni Wassulmaier. Not very noticeably similar, but both act somewhat like the opposite gender they were born as (Reni took it to a way further extent, though), and usually had goofy attitudes.
