Where the heck are treasure maps?

Help me out, I'm not sure if I have missed something or am just not far enough along yet.  I am early in chapter 3, storywise.  So far I have found two treasure maps, kind of.  One was given to me on one of those Strauss missions where you just go collect a stash from a tree, and barely counts.  The other is half a map I stole from some crazy hermit lady in Ambarino, and I assume I need the other half before I can use it.  That's it - haven't run into a single full, useful treasure map yet.  Treasure hunting was my jam in RDR so I was hoping to do a lot more of it in this game, so where can I find the maps?

My first map was bought from a random stranger.

Another one of them is found in a cabin after a duel with a gunslinger.

If you preordered the deluxe or ultimate editions on time there is a bonus quest. The first map is in the jail house of the burned out town of limpany.

Which gunslinger? I killed that pig farmer fellow but I couldn't enter his house, I don't think. Door was locked. Not sure if that is who you mean.

The Limpany thing - I had heard that, but there is no treasure map in there for me even though I did preorder on time and entered the two bonus codes that came with it. Not sure what happened there, but I've checked that jail several times and never found anything there except the two dead bodies the first time I went in.

@Nutduster: The easiest way to get info on the treasure maps is just to watch some YT vids, but I suspect that's what you're wanting to avoid?

There are a couple of random strangers dotted about the world that will sell you a treasure map (or you can steal it). There's only about 3 or 4 total treasure hunts in the game though, so the NPC's are easy to miss.

If I recall one of the NPC's that gives a map is on a hill somewhere near the train station you find Reverend Swanson at in early chapter 2 and there's another somewhere around east-north east of strawberry if I remember right.

Yeah, they often spoil things I don't want spoiled. You guys are better about giving just the useful information to get a guy started.

I think I have a stranger mission there still waiting to be done. Will go and check now!

It's funny - I think you and I are playing along at roughly the same pace, but we're experiencing the game very differently! That Stranger (just to the south of Horseshoe Overlook, on the way to Flatneck Station) was literally the first thing I did when I got out of the mountains. Ran into him on my first foray out of the camp, and then began a treasure hunt!

Question for all the other treasure hunters though - when I was playing last night, all of a sudden a random message popped up on my screen saying something along the lines of "You can sometimes buy treasure maps from random folk in the wilderness". But I looked all around me, and couldn't for the life of me see anyone there. I was a little to the southeast of Emerald Station, close to the Heartlands/Roanoke Ridge border. Does anyone know if there's indeed a treasure map for sale around there, and I was just been blind, or was that a random glitch?

I found one in the camp where you have to kill that Mexican gunslinger for the book quotes. However it is extremely vague.

Maybe it's the same map we found, but I came across a crazy hermit lady way up north (as far north as you can get) in West Elizabeth. Sure you found yours in Ambarino?

The one I'm speaking of is found in the crazy hermit lady's hut as far north-west you can possibly get in West Elizabeth. There's a river starting there and her hut is located just north-east of where the river stream begins. If, indeed, you have found your half of the map in Ambarino - please tell me where that was! ☺️

Edit/addition: I too like to try and solve the treasure maps and stuff as much as I can on my own, same goes for the challenges. I'll probably use https://rdr2map.com/ to collect all the stuff when I feel it's time though. I don't think I'll have the patience to go around the map trying to find all dreamcatchers on my own, lol.

Maximo is south of horseshoe overlook, by the train station where you learn to play poker. thats who you can get the jack hall treasure map from, also if you don't feel like or dealing with the pain in the ass Arabian horse, then kill maximo and steal his horse. its a Nokota with good speed to start the game with.

Ah, that's the only one of those famous gunslingers I haven't dealt with yet.

No, I assume it's the same one.  I thought I was in Ambarino but wasn't paying too close of attention.  I found that half a map, just been assuming I'd find the other half, as the first one is very vague.

However, I did find the Jackhall map just now thanks to this thread, I had been ignoring that stranger mission since I didn't notice it was there until the end of chapter 2 and had more important things on my mind.  Already found the next map in the series just by riding around, too.

Flaco. NW area of the map, Cairn Lake. It is The Poisonous Trail treasure. It is a fun set of maps that gets you 4 bars.

Strange about the Limpany map. I found it beside the prisoner on the left hand side.

Yep, got the map from Flaco tonight. I already completed the other one I got from the stranger, too... just coincidence that these were about the only two things I could've done in chapter 2 but didn't (or in Flaco's case, chose to save it for later).

I went back to check. Still not there and I don't know why. I bought the ultimate edition, ordered in August; there were only two codes in the case if that means anything to you.

Actually... looking at the special and ultimate edition announcement, I don't seem to have any of that stuff. I got the war horse which I think all preorders get. Kind of wondering now where my stuff is!

Did you find the poisonous trail map? I've had it for ages then found in the guide that apparently it's a secret hard to find map because there is not a single clue or mention of it in the game.

yo i found half a treaure map in Ambarino but it was off a crazy hunter or man. If you want to know where it is, it is

Spoiler

in the top right corner of Ambarino near some train tracks, there is a hut. a crazy man should come out and tell you to piss off. I killed him and he had a rare shotgun and when i looted his house, there was half a treasure map.

I believe it was a digital pre-order bonus for those who ordered before 31/7 that was extended for two weeks (???). If you have a physical copy, regardless of when you ordered, you won't have the map active in game.

Yes, I figured that out today.  I have the special edition content (though I can't find the thoroughbred - does that unlock later on?).  But no treasure map since I bought the steelbook.  Bummer.  I don't really get the logic in making some bonuses digital only; I'm paying a lot of money for the nicest edition, why can't I get the one dumb extra treasure hunt?  Eh.

There was a slightly confusing amount of versions initially announced with "order by date" offers & different extras for physical & digital editions.  Not to mention the collectors box thing that didn't actually have the game included.

Im still quite pissed about that... i bought the ultimate edition pre august.. because i wanted the steelcase and aditional map.  thats litterally the most expensive option besides the collector box.

Therefore I was very dissapointed when i read the extra treasure map (les tresort des morts) isnt for us.. but only digital pre orders.. as well as the GTO 2 million. i think this is ridiculous an non explainable to people who paid the most for ultimate edition.

The Thoroughbred is in the Valentine stable.

For some reason only the Valentine stable has any of the pre-order or special edition horses.

Go there and select "Buy Horses"

It will be listed there and you can buy it for 0.00

Yeah, that confused me too. Had to ask support and they confirmed it. So I had a (polite) mini ramble about pay in 90 squid and not getting the full game.
