Would Rockstar be able to recreate the first RDR

Recommended Posts

Would Rockstar be able to recreate a version the first RDR as add-on content to RDR2 single player? It wouldn't be exactly the same, you wouldn't need tutorials. but I think the map of that region is basically the same, and you would have to add buildings etc.

They would be able to if they felt like it, yes.  It would be a lot of work though, especially if they wanted to incorporate RDR2's NPC interaction system into RDR.  That would require probably re-recording most or all of the non-cut scene NPC dialogue, and writing a bunch of new stuff.  The rest of the game is not terribly different, especially assuming they don't bother with any kind of camp and just keep Marston as a loner.

There are rumours that they might just do that. We'll see.

Yes they could

but I don't believe they would.

Basically they would have to update nearly every single texture, add mexico, update other characters textures (Like Abraham Reyes, Nigel West Dickens, etc....) which is a sh*t load of work

It's definitely a ton of work, but the plan is mapped out and the foundation is there for them to do it. They made a few retcons and I think one or two plotholes with RDR2 so I kinda get the impression they're gonna fix that with an RDR1 expansion, by modifying the story in same ways and creating a "definitive" Red Dead Redemption experience. It'd also mean that RDR1's story would finally be playable on PC.

They already did most of the work in RDR2. New Austin and the Blackwater region are already fully updated. Cutscenes are made by controlling characters and recording (think GTA V film editor but better).
It is possible, but I'm curious as to if it would be worth it.

Uh not really lol. Video game cutscenes in AAA games in 2018 are full motion capture filmed by directors. It's essentially like filming a movie but you're in a mocap suit on a green screen set.

I am familiar with how they do it and I was in no way suggestion that they did it with controllers. But mocap still involves them controlling, and then recording, digital characters.

So for RDR1 reboot they could take all the character inputs, from the previous game, and have them control the new, updated versions of their characters. Even use the same audio I would imagine.

I wonder is someone may have already done the work. Has anyone actually seen the scripts? They could have recorded the dialog in advance for a future release.

I know a lot of people want Mexico back with the RDR1 story, but after seeing New Austin again I would much rather prefer a map expansion in another direction. I would love some more snow covered area with a snowy town the size of Valentine.

IMO if they added the same Mexico from RDR1 it would be just as boring as New Austin is, compared to the rest of the map that was designed and made for current gen.

Ah fair enough.

But yea, it depends if the animations and stuff are up to pay for the game in 2018. They already got John's voice actor back so they could redo all his if they need be but there's a ton of other actors they'd have to get back if they had to redo a lot of the mocap and voice work.

Why wouldn't they be able to use data the already have?
That is my thought, take the pre existing mocap inputs, voice recordings, and then update the character models.

The quality standard of animations and audio are a lot higher now than they were in 2010. It's a last-gen game remember, it has last gen assets. The raw data they have could well be good enough still of course, I wouldn't say it's certain though.

The animation/audio not being up to the quality needed would be an issue because it's an RDR2 expansion and not a stand alone experience, so there's gonna be some sort of mishmash of RDR1 and RDR2 features and if the RDR1 assets aint up to par it'll be jarring or just look and feel bad.

Able? Yes. Will they? I highly doubt it. I'd rather wait for something new for a Single Player DLC. Maybe the story leading to the ferry robbery in Blackwater? Heidi McCourt was talked about, we saw Arthur in Great Plains and one shot in Blackwater in the trailers. Maybe that content was in the original game, but then was cut and they decided to expand on it and release it as a DLC. A prologue to the events that led them fleeing north to The Grizzlies.

Wouldn't want them to. The original game is fine as is imo.

The Xbox 1 enhanced version has all the DLC, plus Undead Nightmare for $30...

And I was able to get it for $10 on sale...

Seems like way too much work, I would rather get new stories via DLC
