Newspapers Online?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if there were purchasable newspapers online that cover the activities of all the players in the session? Examples:

- If a player robbed a store in Blackwater then the newspapers in every town would write about it the following morning.

- If there was a duel or shootout in the town of Valentine, that could make the headlines too.

- The newspapers could have a “Most Wanted” section where session’s players with the highest bounty’s would be showcased. When or if a wanted player gets brought to justice then that could make the paper the following day.

- Train robberies, bar fights, massacres, etc could be other examples. We could even make the papers by doing good things too. If we bring in a bounty or stop a robbery.

Newspapers could be a fun addition to the game. I know I’d probably enjoy trying to make the headlines one way or another. It sure would bring each sessions to life. Maybe our personal bounty will carry over from one session to the next, and every time we enter a new session the papers would write.... “Wanted Outlaw Spotted In The Region”. Things like that would be cool in my opinion.

Yes that would be brilliant and fun.

They could also use the newspaper as a way for players to find special events in free roam. A new newspaper every day with a chance of some event - a train with special cargo, a coach, a NPC looking for guards. It would be semi random, so the newspaper would hold the information about what the event is, the location or route and the time.

Agreed! Newspapers would be a fun, immersive way to advertise weekly events/bonuses, daily objectives, new updates to the game etc.

I like the train and coach ideas.

Similar to how you can "watch the news" in your GTA apartment and see police chases of people in the session. I do hope they have little things like this, makes the experience so much more immersive

Yes, and if a player retains a bounty for a few days in game, the newspaper headline could read....

”OUTLAW STILL AT LARGE” With the players picture and gamertag on the Wanted Poster.

Maybe the bounty would increase the longer the player isn’t brought justice.

The problem with all this though is speed and availability of communication if you want to maintain plausibility and time period relevance (which I suspect most players want, to avoid the slippery slope of becoming what GTA Online now is).

In GTA Online, it wasn't an issue; mobile phones took care of all that.

But in RDR2 Online, if a player is outside of a town, how are they plausibly going to know someone just got a bounty? If they suddenly leave the session, how would they know it's no longer available?

Plus, the news would either update too often to be realistic, or be so realistically slow that by the time we read it, the players will likely no longer be in the session.

I think it should stick to reporting game activities and updates, maybe once every two weeks.

Maybe..... If the player with the bounty has exited the session, their actions/activities won’t be listed in the newspapers. OR, any and all expired headlines could state they are expired within the newspaper article.

When a player gets a bounty, all 30 other players shouldn’t be automatically made aware of their status. That would be unfair. Give that player time to get supplies and prepare themself for the inevitable onslaught of every other player/bounty hunter in the session.

The newspaper could have both session news/info and game activities and updates. It’s shouldn’t be restricted to one or the other.

That would be interesting. It would also be cool if every few months or so a new sort of "event" happened online to keep things interesting. Maybe a group of outlaws have taken over Rhodes and it's extremely dangerous to go there now. Or a new structure/town is built in a less populated area.

I love the idea of newspapers being used to advertise current/upcoming events in the game or to talk about things other players have done, it would also be a good way to give us some story background on where RDO falls in the timeline.

I’d like a dynamically changing world like that. Good idea.

I don't see anything saying why my argument is invalid.

I just dont see how the newspaper will be efficient for realtime occurrences such as bounties. If we have a radar and are able to see bounties (going off GTAO), putting the bounty in the news will be pointless.

I haven't seen any arguments on how a bounty can work in a newspaper.

I speculate the bounty's location will popup only if you are in the nearby vicinity and not to the whole lobby.

Countered and invalid are two different terms. Invalid means they hold no ground, and to be clear I didn’t use the term invalid. I used countered which in this case means the arguments have been challenged.

I like the idea, but a huge part of what makes the newspaper fun to read is the personalized themes. If it would be about online events it would have to be rather generic descriptions (hence quite boring to read), or it would be a nightmare to code.

The newspaper could use events from the game and use lobby events in generic articles and even insert the names of players. Over time R* can also modify the articles to keep them fresh.

I don’t think the main content of the newspaper should be to report what has happened, but rather what is going to happen, so players want to check the newspaper to find out where and when events are going to happen.

Newspaper could last for a game in-day and then changes the next day. So if a player has a big bounty, theoretically sheriffs could have mailed the newspaper creators or other towns the bounty posters to catch the criminal. If the player leaves the game, the next "issue" of the newspaper could simply have the bounty poster still for an extra day before saying something like "x person has been reported missing/left the state/is believed to have perished or any other excuse"

Newspapers could be a very interesting Idea and maybe Rockstar could event hint at events through it in game, e.g. A gun advertisment could be on a newspaper "Introducing the upcoming x gun" which could tease the weapons release and the likes.
