What is wrong with people?

The fact that this game's being bashed for its 'over'-realism, slow pace and 'boring' story makes me lose the little faith I had in the gaming community.

It's the most engrossing, smooth-playing (FPS-hit permitting), and diverse open world ever made. I must've clocked 35 hours so far, and only done 25% of the story, and I'm still hooked. There's no game out there that sucks you in like this. The depth is staggering.

People just want throw-away, Michael Bay entertainment. When Red Dead Redemption 2 is more slow-burning Stanley Kubrick. Who's with me?

I agree but most of the gaming world just wants pick and up play fun. Why do you think GTA IV was trashed while V is still a monster five years later. Rockstar should have made this game more like V and more arcadey and streamlined because that is what most people outside of this forum want. People don't want a horse riding simulator. After the reaction they had with IV why did they do this again?

I agree that we can all probably think of a number of aspects of this high-concept, faux/pretentious literary approach that Rocktar took for RDR2 as being inadvisable, and just plain WTF, relative to the majority of the gaming community.

The slow burn, long, long replay will appeal only the a fraction of appreciative gamers, like the OP.  As a general rule, how many normal gamers can stay hooked into a story mode game, after they've beaten the game?    So yes, it's a legitimate question - WTH was Rockstar thinking?  After GTA IV?  After LA Noire?  Why make another downer story game?

RDR2 has probably diverted / reduced a month or two of steady pure-profit shark card sales, as people play RDR2 rather than GTA  Online.  So that's lost income that should be deducted from the total revenue that RDR2 brought in. Furthermore, the longer people play RDR2, the longer shark card sales will be reduced.

However, it can still be a win-win, if Rockstar totally goes PvP arcade mode in Red Dead Online.  Screw realism, screw atmosphere, screw mission story depth, just turn the whole  map into a wild west version of the street in front of Tinsel Towers.  The kids will come back.

I don't understand why you keep blaming GTA IV all the time. If people didn't want a horse riding simulator then I have no idea why they bought a WESTERN seeing as that's what people do in westerns the majority of the time. Ride horses. If I don't want a soccer simulator I don't play FIFA games, if I don't want a military shooter simulator I don't play COD or Batttefield. I don't know what's so hard to understand. Yes in a western we ride around on horses. It's like some people have never played a western themed game in their life.

Also I'm amazed that you keep (conveniently forgetting) that Red Dead Redemption was not arcadey yet it's hailed as one of the best games ever made and it's FULL of sombre/serious moments through out the story. R* didn't make Red Dead Redemption 2 in accordance to how some viewed GTA V. They pretty much stuck to their guns with how they made Red Dead Redemption and applied it to the sequel (well technically prequel. Lets just say follow up). If people really only want "fun" and "over the top" games there would be no market for games like The Last Of Us, Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain or basically any game where cinematics are the driving force over mindless mayhem.

I would day say just like Red Dead Redemption this game was not marketed towards a wide spread audience due to the fact the western genre (particularly open world games) is fairly niche. How many western open world games have there been this generation? Atm Red Dead Redemption 2 owns an entire sector to itself. It's not another typical AAA game like Fortnite, Assassin's Creed, Call Of Duty etc that people get used to because they're churned out every year.

I am only repeating what I hear over and over again on boards. Boring horse riding and cowboy simulator is what I constantly hear from people. I am not blaming IV but it seems that this game has received the same kind of reaction from people. They say it is not fun and fun is why most people play games.

The OP asked what is wrong with people and I am explaining why people feel the way they do. You can go on and on about all these details but if people feel the game is not fun to play then it is pointless. It's like beautifully presented food that doesn't taste good.

There he goes again making wild statements about "most people" not liking the game on forums despite the fact multiple people on this forum have objected to it. Discussion about the game at the moment, across the entire web, is extremely positive.

It's straight up trolling at this point.

You keep telling yourself that. This is the biggest backlash since IV,

Some people want flying horses with rockets attached to em. That’s why.

Also, a select few like to stir up the controversy so to speak. (A little bit too much...)

Seriously? You bash the game in every thread. Then you act like this forum is full of the only people that like it. The only reason I made an account here was for this game. I’m on a few boards and find very few people bashing the game. In another thread you even linked an ign article about why people don’t like it. Articles are written by people, with opinions, which does not speak for me or anybody else. Get on Xbox and scroll thru your friends list. Most people are playing rdr2. Doesn’t seem like “most people” (as you keep saying) dislike the game to me. Sounds like you’re bias, and prefer the gta style gameplay, so try to make it sound as if most don’t like this game. Simply untrue.

I am not bashing the game myself but I predicted it would get a backlash and I am right. Calling the facts as I see it does not mean that I share their opinion.

He doesn’t necessarily bash the game. It seems that he just cares what others think who bash the game. There was a thread earlier he made about his friend trading in the game over a f*cking looting/skinning animation... like, really dude? lol

I'm not really noticing any backlash from this game at all. I mean there's a little noise here and there but most YouTubers and gamers I know are mesmerized by the RDR2 experience. Don't where people are coming up with "slow burn." I'm a bit surprised. I'd love to know what games they were playing before RDR2 if they think it's a slow burn. As Miami said, it's more of the original RDR.

I didn't really love IV when it came out either but mostly because you were stripped of (IMO) decent rewards and things to do outside the story. But RDR2 is so full of detail and activities and rewards, I don't see any similarities to IV at all, really other than perhaps a little more detail and realism than an average GTA, quite possibly as they afford to  have more detail as they aren't dealing in bustling cities with a huge soundtrack and lots of things going on simultaneously.  I can respect GTA IV now but didn't like the sweeping change from 3 cities to 1 and removal of the countryside. But I appreciate why people love it and I do enjoy myself on many levels.

I would regard GTA Online the biggest backlash since IV. Perhaps your view is a bit skewed Woggleman? I mean that in a respectful way. Are you going into more topics with negative views on RDR2 or something? Maybe getting all that confirmation bias?

Were people surprised by RDR2? Was it not what they expected? It's exactly what I expected and lots more. Although I didn't watch anything other than the trailers and stayed away from hype, speculation and spoilers of features.

It wasn't just the animation but he said it was the cherry on top of a terrible cake. In his words the game sacrifices fun for realism.

Because most people want arcade, fast paced, mindless fun, when they play games. RDR2 goes on a very different approach, no doubt about it.

That´s why RDR2 is receiveng more critics than V.

For me, personally, I prefer this approach, and this game crushes V easily.

Ok, understandable. If you look for something hard enough, you’re sure to find it. In other words, if you search for bad reviews then that’s what you’ll notice.

For sh*ts n giggles I got on bing, typed red dead redemption 2 reviews, and the entire first page was all good reviews. The only negative thing was about the auto save, and even then they admitted the game is the new milestone for future games. I think you’re just looking for bad reviews and ignoring the millions of good ones.

I'm not telling my self that, I've been keeping up with discussion about the game across major gaming networks.

I have literally thousands upon thousands of people telling me the game is great. Not every game is flawless obviously, and no game is universally loved by everyone, but the reaction to RDR2? It's no different than the people who sh*t on CoD, or Fortnite or any other big game. If you seek out those comments you'll think the game is hated by everyone and yet people still play them in their tens of millions.

It's the vocal minority, as always. People who hate or dislike a game are far, far more likely to go online to rant about it then the people enjoying the game but in the case of big games the vocal minority is still tens (maybe hundreds) of thousands of players, so it seems like a bigger percentage of people hate the game more than there actually is.

Then how about you contribute to this forum in a positive manner if you enjoy the game, instead of beating the same dead horse in every. single. post. you make.

The path you are on right now is borderline intentional trolling and derailment of topics. Do I need to tell you what the next step is?

To put it simply, I don’t give a damn if other people bash it or not. I’m enjoying this game so much. It’s some of those people’s opinions so hey, whatever they say doesn’t really touch a nerve one bit. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got to get my horse (Pie-O-My) and head over to Saint Denis for my next adventure. I’ll probably go fishing before I do so and maybe grab a meal.

Not all but I would say most of the complaints probably come from the mass market.

The mass market want accessibility, fast action packed theme and something that is not gritty...it can be dramatic tho, but not too much.

It's similar as a Transformer / Fast and Furious 8 / Mission Impossible movie versus a The Prisoners / Sicario / The Counselor movie.

In a little over two weeks, RDR2 has already shifted more than 17 million copies - making it one of the Top 50 selling video games in history. Already! Before RDRO even gets started.

Yes a slow, deliberate game like this won't have the same legs that GTAV did (or still does), but R* are doing just fine thank you.

It wasn't the most obviously commercial move releasing a game like this - but even if sales tail off quickly because the kids are bored, it's made a ton of money, they've received rave critical plaudits and they've clearly made a game that a lot of more mature gamers (and probably they themselves) really love.
