Motka
What are some of the dumbest rumors/speculations that sprung up before the release of a GTA game that y'all remember? Here's one: The dudes at IGN unironically thought that Michael DeSanta was Tommy Vercetti when they analyzed the first trailer. Ned Luke barley even sounds like Ray Liotta but OK. Eugene H. Krabs
I’m sure there are far worse rumors out there but I remember the days before GTA V, people thought we would be able to go fishing

Every older white guy with short hair was Tommy and every black guy was CJ to some people. And then there were people who assumed Franklin was CJ's son (and guess why they'd assume that?!). The rampant racial assumptions made on this website and others was really pathetic. And even earlier than that, when GTA IV's first trailer was revealed (but before we knew Niko's name), I remember when some people suggested that Niko was actually an older and battle-hardened Claude who could finally talk. Someone else thought he was voiced by none other than TV's Craig Ferguson (because faux Serbian accents sound similar to Scottish I guess?). There was also a rumor that Niko was going to die halfway through the game and, in a surprise twist, Roman would take over as the protagonist. And if you want to go back even further than that, around the time I joined I remember when a rumor was spreading around that VCS was going to use the same engine and mechanics as GTA San Andeas, when really it was just built off of Vice City. But the rumors spread so much that they actually stuck a big, bright animated banner at the top of the VCS forum that said something like "VICE CITY STORIES DOES NOT USE THE SAN ANDREAS ENGINE, STOP ASKING ABOUT IT!" shaking around in a bold all-caps font. [...]
When the first GTA V trailer came out, some people on both GTAForums and YouTube started suggesting that that black guy running away from the police could be Cesar Vialpando. There was also a period of time when people speculated that GTA V's storyline, characters and general atmosphere would based on "Breaking Bad". It still amazes me that there are some big GTA fans who don't know about the universe barriers. 17 minutes ago, (Ambient) said: When the first GTA V trailer came out, some people on both GTAForums and YouTube started suggesting that that black guy running away from the police could be Cesar Vialpando. Damn, Cesar must have fell asleep in a tanning bed then if that was actually the case.

I remember that. I think Breaking Bad was just so big at the time that everybody really just wanted "Breaking Bad: The Game," and people thought they were seeing references to the show in pretty much every screenshot and trailer frame possible. I also remember a rumor that Michael's son would join him on a heist and become a bank robber, which was also stupid considering you can even tell from trailers and pre-release content that Jimmy was not going to be doing any sort of actions like that. Also, I remember when everybody assumed that Michael was from Liberty City. Besides his accent not really being like anything on the east coast, what reason would people have to assume that? Because Tommy in VC was from Liberty and CJ lived there for some time before SA? Someone on here even voiced displeasure at his background after the game came out, saying "I thought he was gonna be some suave former LC mobster, turned out he was just glorified trailer trash from North Dakota." As much as I dislike V's story, at least they didn't go down the same path that they did before twice. 1 minute ago, Motka said: It still amazes me that there are some big GTA fans who don't know about the universe barriers. Yeah, there was a time when a few people thought that Liberty City was destroyed and rebuilt to what we see in GTA IV. I think it's more casual fans or people from IGN and other sites who also don't understand the universe barriers.
