Silent Characters ?

Recommended Posts

Fun 2

One of the most important features about Story mode is how you can interact with every character, and how civilians around can respond back to you.

GTA Online allowed us to design our character as we like but we don't see him/her talking with characters or NPCs. He's just staring at them all the time.

Do you think RDO will be the same ?

I'm hoping we can select a voice pack for our character, I don't want him to be silent all the time, and don't give me that MMORPG crap, where you select a quote but your character never say it yet the NPC respond back.

I think that is the difficult task. Finding a balance where you can still interact with the world, where its isnt scripted to a few lines. Of course the lines will be all the same for everyone. The difficult part is actually having to choose who is going greet/antagonize the npc, everyone is going to do it differently. Good idea having a preset to different types of voices male/ female. Still trying to figure out who exactly are going to be our mission givers?

Maybe, In the original red dead multiplayer our characters had generic phrases so I figure that could be the route they take? Or they could expect us to voice the characters ourselves through the mic (like how yelling at the clerk in gta online would make them put money in the bag faster, supposedly).

I’m not sure how a mute would really fit in back then.

I'm hoping for voices. I wanna talk to our horse and have some form of the NPC interaction system (even if it's only basic stuff like hello/defuse/antagonise).

They should just do it like Saints Row where you have select voice options. All they would need are a few voice actors all with the same lines.

I'd love it if we could have VAs

They went all out with the massive VA list as seen in the credits, it'd be nice if they hired a few males and females to voice the Online characters and give them dialogue lines. It'd just be boring to see your character being a mute in cutscenes again. I'd love to actually interact with.... whoever from the campaign returns for Online. I'm really intrigued to know what time period the game will be set in, is in 1899, 1907, 1911? Highly doubt it's the year Jack's an adult, that'd make the character pool VERY limited

I personally prefer a voiceless player character, especially when the player is being given choices outside of a linear narrative. If I'm taking in the world and building a character for myself, I don't want somebody else's voice interrupting that. I'll approve of exertion noises - heavy breathing from running, grunts in fights - but I don't like feeling I'm a backseat driver to a character with their own personality. It takes me out of the experience more than it puts me in it.

You vocally reassure your horse in SP and vocalise in a lot in mini games etc.

I would be very surprised if we were a mute character again.

I wouldn't mind generic lines and phrases like "Howdy" and "Ya'll rite?" and some whoops and sounds of excitement and anger when Gambling.

It's something I'd enjoy a lot I think. Not given it any thought before now TBH but I do like my role play and immersive gaming and this I feel would add much.

I do feel we should have an option to mute it or stop it because not all like this side of gaming and it would push some away if it wasn't optional.

Maybe for the PvE sessions? Just a thought, but some PvP players might enjoy it too.

With the amount of money and resources available to Rockstar, they could easily afford to have several different voice actors for us to choose from for our online characters. I hope they go that route but I'm not optimistic that they will.

Idea 32 different voices, you never hear anyone sounding the same as a result, filter out the same ones

Trouble with voices is that it limits who/what your character can be, right down to little things like personality/temperament. Things like Mass Effect, AC Odyssey, Saints Row, etc., you'll have different actors reading the same lines, but interpreting them differently - and that's on top of other limiting factors like regional/national accents (like how there's only one British voice in Saints Row - you can only have 'bloke from Guy Ritchie movie', not anything more cut-glass, or Northern, or whatever, or anything for a female Boss).

It'd definitely be a bit weird to have NPCs respond to silent interactions, although that's how older BioWare RPGs used to do it, so... It's a toss-up, I guess - in either case, I wouldn't mind them jettisoning the whole 'rubber-faced characters that do vague lip-synch animations when you talk through a mic' thing from GTAO, particularly if that means better facial animations/expressions and the like.

I dunno... I like the idea of some simple vocalizations for things like calming a horse, saying Howdy to NPCs, but I'm not sure I want a fully acted experience. I kinda like imagining how my character acts and reacts for myself and it might be harder to do that with a VA inserting their interpretation and emotion into it.

At least give us voice packs with a few NPC voices or even main story character voices lol or give an option to be a mute if ya want to as well. That would be interesting but i think Rockstar is going to go the silent character route since it saves them money and time

Elder Scrolls Online has speakable NPCs, so why shouldn't that be possible in RDRO?

There is a reason that the download of RDR2 is 107 GB in size, which may be a lot of sound and Music files including speech...

Just give us a voice pack with 10-20 different voices for each gender and keep the greet and antagonize actions in and "dialogue" when you're calming your horse and stuff like that

I'd like to have voices to choose from, but I would like the dialogue to be very limited. "Thanks" and "Hello" and basic words like that, along with some grunts and laughs maybe, as someone said above. No need for big speeches. But would definitely like to hear a few things.

At this point I'm just hoping for a character creator system like GTA but better and more improved, I've heard somewhere that we'll just get to pick "pre-made characters" which would be terrible to me as I've loved having a character that I have created myself in GTAO.

as for it being a mute or not, I would like it to be a mute, I got used to it from GTAO and I won't mind it here as well, in fact a character speaking would be odd.

New voice packs could actually be quite a good "selling" point for future DLCs--finding one that better fits your character could be tempting.

To avoid players spamming their voice (as often happened in TF2--got annoying), responses could be randomly generated, as in GTA 5's Story Mode characters.

It'd be kinda funny if we couldn't greet people back. The option is there but we don't say anything. We'd slowly lose honor and everyone in town would think we're rude.

^^ Oddly enough, I find greeting townsfolk (at least while on horseback) impractical as-is.

I often have people greet me while I'm very carefully riding through town (which is nice), but I don't have enough time or motivation to look in their direction, hold down R2, and then press "Greet" all before another one comes along... especially if I'm focusing on where I'm going, dodging people and dogs walking right in front of me, or what else I need to be doing in town anyway.

Thankfully, no NPC has yet been miffed at me for not greeting them back.

A small miracle.

I'd be all for having voiced characters, specially if we get to pick their voice style and alter the tone and pitch. I also wouldn't mind having mute characters, though.

I don't think we'd lose the option to Greet and Antagonize people. Maybe our characters would do hand gestures according to each option selected (tip the hat to Greet, flip the bird to Antagonize and etc).

There is said to be 700 voice actors being used for this game. I'm hoping I've spent enough on Shark Cards so most of those who didn't voice any major story characters in towns, camps or what, have voiced a few extra lines, before they left the studios. Voices for online characters, though limited to the standard greetings, call outs, to antagonize.

I can understand that you are used to it from GTAO and I can understand why they didn't voiced them there. But this is not GTAO and interaction with NPC's is one of the reasons why this world feel much more alive than any other game I've played. If the players character is mute, that would be just lazy game design and the game would completely lost what makes it unique.  It's almost year 2019 and we should not put up with ten years old (maybe even more) game designs. I don't need hundreds of dialog pages, just a few lines and responses. If I have to watch an unskipable cutscene like in GTAO where your character just stare without any word or face expression, I swear to god R*!!

I have voiced my concern regarding this before in the speculation topic I think. I personally hope very very much that ~20 or more of those 1000 voice actors were for our online characters. Where you pick from a range of male and female voices. It would be such a bummer if they stripped this feature from Online, after the bar they’ve set with the single player. Even if everyone is “Arthurs” and “Sadies” would be better than everyone being mute IMO.
