Do pocketwatches serve any purpose?

It seems I can tell the time of day anytime I want by pressing down on the d-pad. Do any of the pocketwatches when equipped give you any benefit? Was this perhaps a feature of the game they scrapped later on? Are pocketwatches pretty much just to sell?? The general store even sells a basic type pocket watch. Thanks.

You can check what time it is without entering the menu. No idea what they are there for, other than for the sake of being in the game.

Yeah it seems they are just to sell for cash. In your satchel it shows an item that displays a list of your pocket watches and you can equip them. It seems like an idea they never finished.

I bought one from the catalog at the general store, didn't see it anywhere until one of the cutscenes in chapter 6, there was a gold pocket watch hanging from my vest. I was wearing the same clothes I'd been wearing for a while and this was the only time I saw the watch.

I feel wrong selling the Rutlinger Antique watch, so I use it as my main pocketwatch
 

It would have been cool if you couldn't tell what time it was without a watch, but you can just tap down on the d-pad

Yeah, they're almost pointless with how easy it is to tell the game by pressing down or pausing the game. 

You can equip them then use them in the same way you'd open binoculars but it just takes so long and then once you have it open, you're restricted to only being able to see the watch until you put it away again.

Must be Immersion then.  Sort of like changing the stocks and such on your weapons and some of the saddle/horse hair styles-no point but to customize into 'Yours' along with about 7 billion others who happen to have done the same thing, well, except for your horse having Dreadlocks, I imagine that a Niche 1.3 billion Market.
