ALifeOfMisery
Once RDO has been released we will, thankfully, find our characters in a time and place where mobile phones, email, text messages and almost all forms of instant communication have yet to be invented. Hopefully this will mean the days of being endlessly harassed by NPCs are over. However, it does leave the question of how players will communicate with one another? Obviously being in a party chat or on public mic will be an option, as will both platforms messaging services alongside 3rd party services such as discord. But, will RDO have in game text based messaging? If so, how could it be implemented? Could it be implemented, be practical and still remain in keeping with the period of time in which the game is set? IamCourtney
I suppose we could send mail and telegrams... maybe even have NPC couriers who actually track you down and deliver them! K3nil, R3CON, ALifeOfMisery and 2 others

Lonely-Martin
I'd like it to be a 'within the area' approach myself. Aside party chats and maybe friends on ya list bring clear to us each in session. If 2 guys are having a bit of banter up north while I'm in Saint Denis. Makes little sense I hear it. So glad mobiles aren't a thing. A little pop up telling me I got mail is all good, easily ignored but won't interfere with gameplay when in a tight spot. I'd actually enjoy being tracked down by a courier delivering a "1v1 dUaL", "FkN P$$y" and of course that favourite insult from the Old West "Lzzzzz" in telegram form. 1 hour ago, Gallows said: Proximity chat would be good. 1 hour ago, Lonely-Martin said: I'd like it to be a 'within the area' approach myself. Yeah, proximity chat would be much better than lobby wide voice chat. Display Name, Lonely-Martin, IamCourtney and 4 others
Slonitram
Proximity chat would be far better than lobby wide chat. I guess text based messaging in-game would be done by mail that you have to pick up at the Post Office. Imo, having a courier tracking you down everytime someone sends mail to you would get pretty annoying. CrimsonFolo
Yea proximity chat would be the best fit and having messages being sent by mail would be good and immersive too. ALifeOfMisery
Shadowfennekin
"You've received a letter from a courier pigeon" "Buy a car! - Agent Archer" "You're ignoring me, play my Adversary modes! - Guido" In a better world though, you can just pick up mail from the post office like in SP. It'd just get annoying if somebody kept mailing you letters and a courier brought them to you, just for you to read "Money pls" They better charge you per letter you send to a player to discourage that kind of behavior DentureDynamite, ALifeOfMisery and MostlyPonies
DentureDynamite
^^ lol I like the "Guido" Bay Watch reference there. The only downside of using proximity-based voice chat is that you potentially reveal that you're within a certain area of the map. Easy to avoid if you just don't talk or use text-based chat. Revoemag
Text chat like in gtao pc, or better systems like in most rpgmmos . Text chat in my opinion is equal to talking, so it doesn't need to be "of the era " .. if anything it could equate to sign language.. But text chat needs to be in the game. Without it in gtao ps4 was difficult to group with random people, and being in a public voice chat is super toxic DentureDynamite and IamCourtney

Something like The Pony Express would be cool. They probably shouldn't deliver mail and messages to you in the mountains somewhere, but they could easily deliver them to your camp, or last known whereabouts. White Shark
Proximity chat would be best of all. And no instant messages or "letters". Messages sent get delivered to the post office, and the icon becomes highlighted on the map if you have letters to be read WHICH you can choose to ignore. For the love of God, allow us to ignore them, R*!! Otherwise that damn post office is gonna find itself on fire. DentureDynamite

Smokewood
Proximity only, including voice chat in game. Just like in chapter 1, Arthur could barely hear Micha and had to rely on Dutch to relay the message just 2 horses in front of him.
