Free Aim vs Aim Assist (lobbies)

I come from the days of hardcore free roam on RDR1, so I vote for free aim lobbies. Aim assisted lobbies were filled with players auto locking onto you with the high powered pistol (high damage, high rate of fire). That was an OP weapon I hope never sees the light of day in RDR2 Online. Combining this weapon with lock on Aim Assist was straight BS.

hardcore free roam was where I found real fun and skillful players.

Auto aim here, I'm just not competitive enough with combat.

Both should exist though, just because I don't, others relish it. Loads to these games now. :)

I'll be in auto aim. I plan to be in PvE lobbies for the vast majority of my game time anyway.

Yes to both and a real hardcore free roam. Rockstar can’t fool me with sticky aim. RDR2 has is too.

I notice players are choosing auto aim because they believe it would be more forgiving. The truth is, normal aim assist will be more brutal. WHY?

Normal Aim Assist lobbies will be where new players go, and new players are more likely to shoot on sight.

Unlike free aim lobbies where the chances of missing your shots are quite high, auto aim lobbies almost guarantee every bullet your shoot will hit its target (meaning more PvP deaths). The ONLY thing that would cause a shot to miss in auto aim lobbies would be an object between the shooter and their target.

Free Aim lobbies in my opinion would be more forgiving. Less shots hitting means less death. Players would think twice about shooting another player fearing they might miss their shots. There would only be a handful of skilled gun slingers in free aim lobbies unlike auto aim lobbies where every player (noobs and veterans) would shoot extremely accurate.

^^ For this reason alone I fully intend to ditch all PvP in favor of co-op with players against NPCs--at least until a PC version comes out.

Then I can quite comfortably handle a little PvP if need be. Trying to free-aim with a controller is an epic headache compared to a mouse and keyboard.

This is my main concern while we wait to see how Dead Eye will work online... I really don't want it to negate the need for accuracy and timing in free aim gunfights.

If I had it my way, Dead Eye would only reveal vitals when used online.

Painting targets is a little OP especially combined with lock on auto aim and a high powered weapon.

One tonic/medicine I wish/hope we get in Red Dead Online is one that temporarily makes us immune to Dead Eye. I would pay for that. I’d stock up on it before leaving town.

I am not a fan of auto aim what so ever so free aim it is for me... Also I am no fan of PvP either so same as in GTAO I am mostly looking for co-op and occasional PvP against my friends, just for the lols...

I want seperate lobbies for both. In GTA V, they added free aim WITH ASSIST?? That makes no sense as free aim players were put in with players with assist and believe me, that assist is as nearly as good as auto aim itself. Just have Free aim lobbies, auto aim lobbies and the PvE lobbies should be either, like allow both aiming types as you don't affect other players in those lobbies

auto aim makes no sense here. in gta you could escape by drving flying or hiding away. in rdo you have no chance to escape a auto aim griefer on these open ranges

I want free aim and forced first person lobbies.

i hope they add those options, so you have

1. First person aim lock and assist

2. First person free aim NO assist

3. Third person aim lock

4. Third person free aim NO assist

Ya guys know if they remove assist entirely for online we'll have 1 United player base instead of 2 right?

I played GTAO free aim and RDR1 MP, but that might change here. Really depends on how I spend most my time. I don't think I'll want to hunt animals with free aim.

I'd rather there be 2 separate-but-satisfied player bases than a compromised unity that leaves everybody wanting things to be different. Like I've said, I have absolutely no problem with Auto Aim existing, I'm glad it does for those who like it, I just don't want any unasked-for 'free aim assisted' nonsense from GTAO making it's way into RDRO.

Maybe so.

But less players, as I know I'd have no interest in it, wouldn't feel like the R* games I love to me, and most of what appeals about their games goes with it if I'm having my options reduced, much like that 'public only/locked content' crap of GTA:O.

Therefore one less frerloader making up numbers on quarterly calls, or person to monitise more as we know GTA:O is seen as undermonitised too. I would stop buying the games beyond if it comes and remains. Shareholders won't allow this company to limit revenue like this, that's why we're getting PvE sessions.

Too much money lost if they limit their games after 20+ years of cementing their ways. Add to it, by all means. Absolutely. And I fully agree with others about assist in freeaim. Completely defeats the point of the term free aim entirely.

Online gaming isn't worth me adjusting that much to play in a way I find uncomfortable and frustrating rather than relaxing and fun. These games are far more diverse than a hard-core shooter only. Got COD for that. (Again, add the COD-like stuff, but in it's own lobby - Battle Royale pap for those keen, etc).

Feel the same about 1st person too, or I'd have played Far Cry ages ago by now, or other games, lol. Looks good, but limited because I can't stand the FOV. It breaks my immersion and is just weird for me. But I come from a story/sim/racing background so know I'm sh*t at combat, lol.

Hence my not wanting it hard-core throughout.

Sorry to add, but I feel the playerbase could unify just the same if the playstyles aren't forced to clash.

Ya guess I can see the need for options. Besides, I wouldn't want to play with a bunch of whiners crying about not having aim assist.

I'm crap at competitive gaming. It just feels there's always a million people better than me. Having said that, I like a challenge and I prefer the idea of free-aim, so I shall be playing free-aim. I mean, if I play enough free-aim I'm bound to get better. I've been playing RDR2 completely free-aim which is easy enough as Dead Eye exists. It will be really challenging in RDO but, I'll probably be playing co-op stuff mostly, anyway which will be fine.

If Dead Eye in multiplayer even remotely resembles it's single player counterpart, I'll be sticking to Free Aim.

The votes tend to be split. I do agree that having multiple server types will divide the player base, but if they don’t make hardcore free aim a session option then Rockstar will be forcing those with a free-aim preference to switch to the auto lock aim assist setting in order to compete with those auto locking onto everybody. That isn’t fair and isn’t right for long time hardcore RDR1 fans. Most of us were still playing RDR1 up until the release of RDR2, and I hope they recognize and acknowledge us.

We Want Free Aim Sessions.

  • 3 weeks later...

Due to the existence of ability cards, it appears that free aim lobbies are NOT coming. Why?

There is an ability card that grant it’s user the ability to prevent other players from locking on to them while using dead eye. This ability card would be rendered useless with the implementation of free aim lobbies, and I don’t think rockstar would want that. Sucks. I still want free aim lobbies.

I don’t recall, but it’s only active during dead eye. As soon as your dead eye bleeds out, the ability goes away.

I'm not so sure... it also blocks players who have the Paint it Black card from putting target markers on you, which makes it a hard counter. And in a free aim only session, Paint it Black is arguably even more powerful since there's no auto aim system to fall back on.

I've been making good use of Paint It Black to compensate for being free aim and I've been holding my own against auto aim attackers.

SALO or The 120 Days Of Sodom

if they release free aim I'll try it out to see if it's a different quality of players.. if not, then I'm taking my ass right back to aim assist.

free-aim in this game with aim assist all the way off takes a good amount of time to get accustomed to. i'll be the first to say that i am nowhere near as proficient of a shot in RDR2 as I was in RDR or GTAO, but it's fun working my way up there again. the sway you experience during combat is a heck of a thing, truly, but i'm hoping that it will force the PVP in free-aim lobbies to be much more thoughtful than it was in GTAO. i'm not saying PUBG levels of thoughtful combat but just smarter than resorting to sticky bombs and explosive rounds..

oh also, anyone else here that free-aimed in story mode feel like the weapons handle differently online or is that just me?
