Rookie Mistakes to Avoid This Time Around

GTAO was a blast, and I enjoyed it's evolution (for the most part). But, had I gone in knowing what I know now, I would have done things differently. Once RDRO drops, I don't intend to make the same mistakes:

1.) I'm not going to collect 120 horses (most of which I'll never ride). A handful of horses, with different strengths should do me. Maybe a few carriages as necessary.

2.) I'm not going to have 10 different properties that I never actually visit (especially if I can't sell them). A handful of properties (at strategic, sparsely populated places on the map) should work fine this time around. I don't need the biggest cabin on every hill.

3.) I'm not going to blow my meager earnings on EVERY SINGLE business that gets introduced (if businesses get introduced). I'm going to be selective.

4.) I'm not going to join a crew. Messy crew politics are for the birds.

Based on what you learned in GTAO, what (if anything) do you intend to do differently this time around?

I can't say I really made any big, regretful errors in my GTAO career... I've always been reasonably frugal and done my research before making major purchases and I can't see that being different in RDRO.

I think the biggest difference for me will be truly starting from zero. In GTAO, I benefited greatly from the Billionaire Days and between the useful vehicles and properties I bought and the Adder bonds I carried with me after the cash wipe, I was always ahead of the curve for the next 5 years. There was never an update day where I couldn't buy the things I wanted right away. Honestly, if I had known at the time all the free money was being given away that GTAO would be my go-to game for years to come, I would have avoided them. Assuming there are no similar shenanigans with RDRO, I'm looking forward to a different experience this time.

Ahhhh....those were the days. Hoping something like that happens in RDRO too. But, yeah, nothing too stupid in terms of purchases or what have you. The biggest thing for me is how they handle the economy in online. $1k for a horse...ehhh....ok. But if I start seeing super elite horses for 50k then, yeah, I'm not buying into that. I'm sure they'll push for microtransactions in RDRO so that'll be another thing to steer clear of.

Well I have not played GTAO so anything I do is bound to have a bunch of mistakes LoL.

However reading your advice it seems to follow my thinking in things like this. I am looking forward to RDRO starting up.

More than anything, I'm not going to look at what might get added down the line, and hope that it ever comes - biggest mistake I made with GTAO was thinking "y'know, ______ would make for a perfect thing to add with an update!" about things based on single-player and the setting of GTA V.

There's stuff that got added to GTAO that, if you'd said so back in 2013/2014, I'd have laughed you out of Dodge. Not even talking about things like orbital cannons - simply things like R* letting players run Lost-style biker gangs, or legally own hangars at Fort Zancudo. Meanwhile, cars, clothes, etc. that would make total sense in a pastiche of real-world LA still haven't been added, and probably never will. :sigh:

So yeah: whatever comes at launch, that is the game. Anything else is gravy - and don't get too attached to anything specific, in case R* decides to change/remove it a year or so down the line (RIP activities like Distract Cops... :/).

Biggest mistake I did during GTAO? Selling my cars to get money when I didn't really need the money. SI no more selling stuff like that (I imagine it will be horseys this time lol)

Aside from that? I cannot say what other mistakes I could make. I will take it as a trial by fire type scenario. But we all make mistakes, even if we don't want to; sometimes we can't help it. It's the way of life. :)

One more big score and we can get on a yacht to Tahiti, Arthur!

I'll just not persist like I did with GTA:O if this game starts where that left off or shows signs of repeating GTA's nonsense and time wasting.

Simple as that. After GTA, we know their ways, and I want vast improvements in many areas otherwise I'm not playing, or not playing right. I'll MTU everyone out of my online gaming if need be (and possible), or stay with story. Either way, I'll be set. I've no expectations. Though it'd be nice to get more, but that's on R* now. We'll see.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I really hope it isn't, but if RDO does basically start out as GTAO in the West then I'll simply not bother.

I'll get every drop of enjoyment I possibly can out of SP, I've had more than my moneys worth already, and call it a day.

The existence of Adversary Modes already in RDRO makes me sick to my stomach; combined with the existence of "Homing Tomahawks" (seriously Rockstar?!) and other already implausible weaponry makes me increasingly wary.

I'm hopeful for something better than GTAO.

I'm expecting little more than a reskinned version.

I'm with you on every point apart from 4, planning to start a crew with some friends, gonna be a blast!

Agreed, the guys I've gamed with for a while and I are all chomping at the bit for online, so we can get out of forever alone mode and have some fun together.

Actually, the only things I won't be doing is buying useless luxury items. I'm sure there will be a possibility to buy a boat and maybe in die time use the Blackwater Pier to travel by boat or live on it. I don't need the biggest and most expensive ranch, don't need the fastest horse, the most exclusive horse, the biggest horse or such.

I'll be playing exactly like I do in GTAO; big fat lonewolf party. I hope RDO will go a lot more towards the RP end and stay there, instead of the "blow everyone up" PvP end.

I'll do missions, bounties, hunting, hopefully home building and redecorating. All by myself or with very close friends only.

When a flee bitten donkey rider crosses my path and let rain down millions of gold bars on top of me, I will buy as much as I possibly can for that money.

Back in 2013 I bought a Buzzard, a Rhino, a Stinger GT and a Z-Type, but not a lot more, half of which I still own (the other half was on my 2nd char who has since been overwritten). I still have the Buzzard and the Stinger GT, and the game still won't let me sell the Stinger GT (not that I would ever want to).

I was very surprised that I got to keep them, and money-wise R* didn't remove as much as they could have. I write it all off as pure luck. The Buzzard has been a true blessing.

^^ I have a feeling that (unlike GTAO) RDO will have some hard-wired limits in it, such as max number of gold bars or cash a player can own.

Whatever falls from the sky, I'm not going to worry about it--though this isn't the PC (yet) so it should be pretty cheat-free.

If the hot air balloon is the practical equivalent of the Buzzard in RDO, I want it. :) Watch Rockstar let us add it to our saddle bag.

Not approving it, but I foresee all manner of wild west equivalents to modern weapons and equipment being added in DLCs... parachutes, airplanes, grappling hooks, grenades, maybe even wingsuit-like gear.
