Caring for the camp

why does everyone feel like they have to spoiler sh*t? You could plain say he dies when you post stuff like that. Please keep the spoilers to yourself, not everyone is unoccupied and has all the time in the world to rush through RDR2. Some people just dont want. Its amazing if you don't go from "caring for camp" to "I don't like Character YX".

While I agree with the sentiment, Dutch's fate isn't exactly a spoiler. RDR came out 8 years ago. ;)

I didn't know. I didn't play RDR. I am not going on an RDR forum just plain spaming what happens in the game. Even if a movie is old, running around telling what happened in it to everyone isn't really nice.

Did you not play the previous game? This is not a spoiler for RDR2 at all.

Fair enough, but basically the only thing you now know is that Dutch actually lives through this game, because RDR follows this chronologically and he's in it.  You're doing the equivalent of going to see Godfather II and complaining when the guy sitting next to you says it's sad that Don Corleone dies of a heart attack later on. Or seeing The Phantom Menace and complaining when someone tells you that little kid Anakin grows up to be an evil dude, but he redeems himself in the end just before he dies.  You should already know this, in other words.

Actually, you just spoiled me that Dutch stays alive in RDR2. Knowing Dutch's Fate means to be informed about what happens to him in either of the Games.

How about not talk about what happens to characters when its about game mechanics? Wouldn't that be great - to just keep story to yourself or post it in spoiler tagged threads?

I think you're being unreasonable here.

RDR2 is a prequel to an eight year old game. Rockstar have written this game knowing that a large majority of the people who play it have already played RDR1. In the last two years, since RDR2 was announced, this forum has been full of people discussing and speculating about the story - but it's never been about what happens to Dutch....because we all already know....it's about how he turns into the character we already saw in the first game. The journey is important because the destination is known. That's a large part of the point of the story!

This part of the forum is spoiler-free for RDR2. That is to say noone should be on here spamming what happens later on in the story of this game.

If you don't want spoilers from the first game (again - a game that most people on here finished eight years ago!) then I'm really not sure this forum is the right place to be.

It's rather unfortunate, but a few second glance at RDR last for artwork alone will show Dutch too.

Consequences of joining franchises late and being active online, lol. Can't be helped really as you're on a forum that story-wise, are far further in, 8 years is a while.

Or, if the topic is about a game mechanic, keep your story spoilers to yourself. Isn't that wonderful? Instead of arguing why its fine to spoiler people, JUST DON'T SPOILER PEOPLE.

I didn't, but we are talking about a mechanic that directly involved a gang of characters that many of us have known for near a decade too.

The interaction with Dutch is this conversation, in a way. The whole reason I enjoy these mechanics is those different interactions and to contrast it with what I and many here do from our last adventure years back is kind of expected too.

But yes, spoilers should be respected. Trouble is, we can't sometimes. Caution is advised coming here.

It's like watching a quiz show or something, and getting a question like 'Who was the lead antagonist in this...'

Can't be helped, sorry.

I am very careful what threads I click into. I don't click into "Who survives the Game?" Threads, but I click into threads about the Camp mechanics since they should have nothing to do with story. In the moment you glance on a post that blantly spoils stuff, you know it.

In your logic, being in a forum before finishing the game isn't recommended - In which cases a forum makes no sense since its about helping/getting help. if everyone needs to finish it first, it makes no sense.

There is no reasoning why it is okay to spoiler someone in a game mechanic thread. If I ask "Are the Satchel upgrades in camp worth farming?" and you reply with "Your horse will die in chapter 3" then there is no good reason why you would do that and nothing to justify it with.

I disagree, the help section is for help, this is general chat. And caring for the camp is part of the story, for some. Discussions are expected when relating to general and an old game.

We literally are explaining/discussing this very mechanic and what it involves. We can't be more on topic if we tried really. It's just unfortunate is all.

How is "I don't care about Dutch, happy I know his fate" related to providing food/money for the Camp? It's like saying "Is there a list of available quests in Saint Deniz?" and you reply with "I don't care about the City, luckily they bomb it in Chapter 5" It's just a spoiler, not unfortunate. It's like saying "Sorry I punched you in the face and kicked you in the head, just unfortunate is all"

Na, that's deliberate assault, lol.

We are talking about caring for the camp. That comes with various interactions. And that's being highlighted as a reason by me and some.

Again, it's no more a slip of the tongue and unfortunate as these discussions regarding long standing franchise characters here.

Anyway, we disagree. Moving on, but be cautious of forums with players that have followed a series for 8 or more years, about all I can advise. Peace out.

Well no, because the first comment is spoiling the first game (which is viewed as perfectly fine on this forum), and the second comment is spoiling RDR2 (which should not be done on this forum yet - only in the Armadillo Inn).

Again, I think it's mad that you're playing a game where it's expected that you know the ultimate fate of Dutch (and several other of the characters, if not all of them) before you start, and complaining when someone makes an off-hand remark about that fate.

The game is a sequel to a very popular, 8-year-old game.  Clearly mods here do not view info from RDR as a spoiler, and rightly so.  If you have a problem with that, take it up with the mods.  I don't think anyone is being unreasonable to expect you to be familiar with at least the broad outline of the plot of this game's predecessor, even if you never played it yourself.  The title, after all, is Red Dead Redemption 2.  Events of Red Dead Redemption 1 are not spoilers any longer.  And it's not like this is a hidden Easter egg in RDR, either: "John Marston hunts down members of his old gang" is the entire plot of that game.  Go read a plot summary of it, or at least stop complaining.  Whining about spoilers for years-old games/movies is the absolute worst.

Isn’t donating money to the camp the same as banking it in GTA? That’s kinda how I looked at it.

You then spend that money upgrading the camp for your own benefit so you’re not losing out on anything. Your gang members don’t take the ammo or tonics etc from camp. That’s all yours to save you going to the shops.

So if anything, the few cents etc from the gang members are just a wee bonus!

I think the other gang members do take ammo/tonics/food from camp over time, don't they?......certainly the supplies in my camp go from Yellow to White to Red if I haven't restocked them (and I almost never take anything out myself - I find enough on the road!)

Plus, if you 'bank' the money in camp, you can't take it out again and use it on bounties or horses etc.

I still do donate regularly - but I view it as a contribution to the greater good rather than keeping it myself which would be the more selfish and efficient way!

Hmm, I’m not sure then..

I thought the white, yellow, red was to indicate if you were donating enough?

So if they’re all white things are good and morale is high, yellow is middle of the road and red is an unhappy camp.

Either way, I pretty much ignore them now. I do donate stuff like rings or pocket watches though as they’re no good to me anyways.

you spoiled it for yourself.

you assumed "his fate" meant death.

you up could have continued the game thinking Dutch was going to die & been surprised that he doesn't, but instead you lashed out and found out otherwise.

and if you need a better answer for the OP:

i don't like Dutch because he does nothing for the camp. the rest of the gang is seen doing chores, cooking food, hosting minigames while Dutch hangs out in his lavish tent listening to music with a whore in his bed.

Dutch's name doesn't even appear in the Ledger for donations.

he's leech.

he he sits on top of his white horse with his fancy clothes and looks down on the rest of us.

Arthur has been part of this gang for 2 decades and is still treated like an errand boy.

I haven't even left chapter 2 yet so maybe I don't know in the long term, but so far I actually love the camp.  They struck a perfect balance of it being something you can fiddle with and lavish a lot of attention on if you want, or mostly ignore it and it doesn't actually impact your game very substantially.  It doesn't seem required but if you like doing it, it's rewardingly deep (sort of like how I imagined the businesses in GTA Online would be, but aren't).  Before the game was out I thought I'd be in the wilderness alone most of the time as I was in RDR; instead I find myself returning to camp often, sleeping many nights there and contributing whenever I can.  I'll probably be a bit less attentive once I've upgraded everything and gotten all the crafting I can from Pearson, but even then I think I'll still be hunting for them and making sure supplies are full up.

I find the camp to be a representative example of them figuring out some things they have previously not done very well.  Arthur's weight and hair is similar - the kind of upkeep I found kind of annoying in San Andreas has been done just right here, where you can interact with it occasionally (or just let it immerse you in the game), but mostly it stays out of your way.

I love it too, I think it's really well done -- except for the caveat that it seems to render going to town almost useless. I have a place to sleep, to get food, to get medicine, to get ammo.

I think it should have kept just the basics at camp, and still give me a reason to go to town and buy more advanced stuff or more diverse stuff. I get there are saloons and a gun store in town, but other than that... I can really get everything in camp. It's a little TOO convenient.

....

Agree about (non) spoilers, too, btw.

The statute of limitations on media spoilers ends after a certain time; and on video games, it has certainly passed by 8 years, especially when there's a sequel/prequel. If you haven't played it by then, you probably aren't gonna. On top of that, a game with an epic ending like RDR1 is relatively "common domain."

It would be one thing if someone is spamming details deliberately where they don't belong, just broadcasting it out loud, but making an offhanded semi-informative statement that IMPLIES that a character meets a certain but unspecified fate at a certain but unspecified time is simply too vague to fall into "spoiler" territory for an 8 year old game. Sure, it's slightly off topic from the OP, but message board threads sometimes devolve into more than the EXACT topic that was originally posted. Don't think there's room to complain. If you're worried about having RDR1 spoiled, I suggest putting down RDR2, get off this forum, and go play RDR1 immediately. I mean, I recommend that anyway, because anyone who had the means and opportunity but did NOT play RDR1, I question their serious gaming credentials, since it's an all-timer.

This is how my ledger looks every time I visit camp.  Two full pages of my contributions (mostly valuables stolen from dead O'Driscolls and top-shelf meat, carcasses and pelts), interrupted by one other gang member donating a worm-eaten leaf worth half a penny or some sh*t.  Aggravating - get it together, gang!

Yellow (gold) is full.

White is ok.

Red, you need more of that item.

The color indicates the stock level of that particular item.

The gang does indeed use the supplies. Otherwise mine would stay gold all the time because I've never used any supplies from the camp.

Any information about the first game is not a spoiler. It's common knowledge even for those who haven't played it. 8 years is plenty of grace period, it's time you knew.

Edgar Ross forces John Marston to kill/capture Bill and kill/capture Javier. He catches up to Dutch eventually and Dutch jumps off a cliff killing himself. Edgar Ross then kills John Marston. Years later, Jack Marston finds and kills Edgar Ross.

The end.

Notice how wildly bipolar Dutch's mood swings get?

He gets super paranoid with Arthur when camp provisions are low/ppl are starving. Worst Arthur got from this PMS was Dutch point blank asking Arthur when he was going to takeover the camp. Had all 3 camp icons in red at that point. A few gold bars & $$$ thousands in donated gold bar funds later, camp was well provisioned, fully upgraded and with all 3 gold icons. Arthur rolls back into camp to find everyone having a rave party. Dutch stops what he was doing in his tent, walked out into the middle of the festivities, and proudly proclaimed Arthur as "his boy Arthur" aka his long lost prodigal son who had returned at last. In whom he was quite apparently well pleased.

This praise didn't seem to go over well with the likes of Bill btw. It seems no matter how nice/polite Arthur is whenever he sees him, Bill just comes across as sounding gruff or rudely dismissive whenever he speaks to Arthur

Bill may be the bully of the group (or is this Pearson?) One of these is always riding the Reverend's dick.  But to be fair, everytime the Reverend gets "victimized" it always seems he's getting caught at something. Like 5 finger discounts to the community chest that are bigger than what he's apparently donating. Or helping himself to a larger amount of stew etc. lol

Since Arthur is clearly the breadwinner with so many mouths to feed, I wouldn't mind if these members got permanently "lost" after leaving camp

1. Micah. Too wild, high visibility roller, always getting arrested, hot tempered and unpredictable. Had to look up the fate of this posse member. Because I was tired of bailing his ass from the law. So weighing how much I would risk Arthur's reputation/savings/life other members to keep him alive. He was responsible for getting Sadie's homestead burned to the ground. Turns out:

Spoiler

Thankfully this one dies. You get bonus items if you find his hidden camp when he was on the run. And if you revisit Mt. Hagen after Chapter 2, you can loot his weapon off his frozen corpse to complete collecting all weapons in the game.

2.Reverend WTF is his name. WTF does this drunkard do really? He lacks the basic sense of thieves honor ie.you don't steal from your brother thieves. You'd think he'd have at least ONE redeeming skill set since he's so useless. Like gambling. Fool doesn't do sh*t around camp. Correction: all this fool ever does is eat and sh*t. And attempted theft when when nobody else is looking.

3.Bill. For being such a mean SOB.
