Animal hunting and pelts

Recommended Posts

EssCee

So I get a pelt or two.... Go back to camp and I sell it.... Not sure what the purpose is and if I get an animal and stow it on the horse, I don't seem to be able to give it to the camp. Is my understanding correct? Or am I thinking this wrong?

You just donate to the camp for food, they don't pay you. You can indeed donate the entire carcass off the back of the horse. Just walk up to Pearson and you will find it in the menu. When you donate it, it will disappear off the horse.

If you don't donate food for a while, the people in the camp will get hungry.

You can also sell pelts and carcasses/animal parts to the butcher in towns.

You can also sell them to the trapper, who has a post in St Denis and 4 small camps around the map that aren't marked until you find them. The trapper also gives the ability to craft unique clothing depending on what you give him.

If the pelt is a 3 star quality, you can donate it to Pearson for crafting. These will be stored and as you donate more pelts, you'll be able to combine all the ones stored to craft items via Pearson. Any pelts which are 2 or 1 star are just sold for funds.

You have to wait until it unlocks through the storyline

Ok thanks for the info, I really wanted that outfit but I guess I can only craft it later in the game then.

Semi related to hunting & pelts, and I don't like starting new threads for a simple question. It's well known carcasses go bad when stored on your horse for a while. Is the same true for the small animals that go directly into your satchel?

I'm doing a misc. task where I have to mail a few carcasses, but the catch is they all have to be mailed at the same time, so time is a factor.

Does anyone have any advice with critter hunting? By that, I mean squirrels/rabbits/racoons/beavers.

Because they're so small, I find it tricky to see them stationary - whip out the binoculars to check their quality - and then sneak up on them (as you would do for bigger game).

......so instead I've been just waiting to see them whilst I'm riding along, then grabbing the varmint rifle and blasting them. But I reckon I've had two perfect rabbit pelts for over a hundred blasted bunnies. And not a single perfect squirrel.

Is there anything I need to do to improve my odds? Do I need to do a better job of targeting them in the head? Do I actually need to use the bow & small game arrows for the squirrels? Am I just being really, really unlucky?

You absolutely should use the small game arrows for squirrels. As I progressed through the game, I found getting 3 star pelts easier (so long as they're 3 star animals. I don't even waste time or ammo otherwise). Partly because I'm picking my weapon/shots better, but also I believe there is a hidden skill level, because I can snap fire on rabbits and similar sized game with a Varmint Rifle now and still get a perfect pelt, whereas in the beginning, it had to be a bow with a perfect shot. No, I'm not talking about having the Whitetail Antler Trinket, although that's worth seeking out immediately.  But even now, I still have to use small game arrows for very small critters and snakes.

Beavers are easy. Brain shot with a Varmint Rifle. (Not just the head, has to be the brain. If you can't see it, aim between and maybe a hair above the line between eye and ear). With the Antler Trinket, I can snap fire Racoons, skunks etc. Still not squirrels, frogs, rats, etc.

Top right corner of the map near the Legendary Moose location or Lake Isabella (northwest part of the map), I've seen plenty of moose. I'm sure I've seen a moose or 2 near other bodies of water. Moose will usually be around the water. Northern areas of the map (cooler/colder).

Dead Eye plus Bow, also press info on animal you are hunting, it will tell you what level they are, best ones are young and in prime

Got the legendary moose. Tracked it... found it. Was dead already!

Think my game was glitching. Doing some odd things before the above event. Accidentally robbed someone. Loads of npc around saw it but just stood there. Could walk up and threaten all of them. They didn't move.
