Any hunting tips and tricks?

As many of you have read in another posts cougars are the hardest thing to find is this game for me...as I have found exactly zero and that is with many hours invested looking for them in "confirmed" cougar spawn locations.

I have tried bait and potent bait with no luck and Bait is the thing I would like to inquire about.

Does bait only work if the animal you are looking for is already spawned and in the area?  I have been trying to get it to work with carnivores and herbivores, but I cannot seem to get anything to show up to any of them.  With many animals if you are close enough to "know" they are in the area they have already seen you and are in the process of running out of the area as fast as possible.

I have found the cover scent items to be useful.

I have no attempted a Cougar hunt yet, but I am slowly going through the Legendary animal hunts.

I have not had any success with baits.

This is what I do in search of legendary animals.

1. travel before the known location, and go the rest on foot.

2. apply cover scent

3. walk or crouch and move slowly

4. use eagle eye as much as possible.

5. Do not fire shots until you're 100% sure it's the animal, and you have dead eye engaged.

If you see one, or get a trail of one, and then that trail dissapears or the animal eats you (that blasted bear and gator, for instance).

Then go away, camp for 24hours, and come back.

Otherwise you'll be wondering around for no reason.

During extreme measures, I've had to quit the game completely and reload in.

Hope this helps.

Like in RDR when you want to Skin the dead animal, ride your horse ontop of the dead animal and then Skin it...it will skip the skinning animation...just some side info 😊

I've never had bait work for me... Ive waited for like 15 min. and nothing ever shows up.

Also with the small game arrows it seems like you have to be close enough to knock them out or hit them in the head to get a perfect pelt.

Ya cover scent works really well. I have yet to bag a bull moose, and I’ve only seen one in my 60hrs. Any tips on this?

LUCK.   LOL  I wish I did.  Also, I have had issues with the game even letting me use "cover scent."   It has let me a couple of times and others not so much regardless that I have it in my inventory.   I havent figured out just why yet

The most helpful tip I found for hunters was killing the legendary buck.  The antler can be crafted into the buck antler trinket that "gives higher quality parts when skinning animals."  There are roughly 75 unique animals and 350 skins/feathers required if you plan on unlocking everything, so having the trinket will save you countless hours of frustration.  Study every unique animal so you can see their star ratings while you aim.  If you don't know the weapons required for a perfect pelt and there's no time to read the animal's info while it's running, pause the game, and check the animal compendium.  Having the trinket will often give you wiggle room (i.e. giving you a perfect pelt if you kill a squirrel with the varmint gun instead of a small-game arrow).  When I'm hunting for random 3-star animals, my default setup is horseback with the bolt-action and rolling block rifles.  When smaller animals like squirrels dart out of nowhere, I'll equip the bow and chase them on foot where it's much easier to aim.  Dead-eye as much as you can.  Hunting for those rare animals like the cougar and badger reminded me of getting certain cars to spawn in gta online; they never seem to spawn when you're actually looking for them and your insanity will be tested to the extreme.  Good luck.

Thanks Zoop...good tips here. I knew about that trinket but haven't gotten him yet.

I am admittedly having problems hunting--even with an arrow, a three star critter becomes a two star. I also need to get a bigger satchel crafted ASAP because far too often I'm able to skin an animal but can't collect other parts of it because it's full.

I got the varmint rifle, essentially a 22. Haven't used the shorter arrows yet, has anyone?

I probably need to use deadeye more, but usually I'm so far away from the mark that it's tough zeroing in on a small area. I think I hunt too far away distance-wise.
