Failure

He is certainly one of the best characters ever created by Rockstar Games, but still falls behind Niko, Cole and John. If I were to rank him, I'd place him next to Max and Tommy in the top 6.

He's definitely THE best.

I can't say much without spoiling but he's definitely the most sympathetic and you really get to know and feel for him. He knocked John Marston and Niko Bellic off their pedestals.

I was a bit... doubtful about him at the start but when the trailers arrived he began looking interesting and I'm glad he turned out different from the GTA V trio. He actually developed as the story went along and went through changes. I love Arthur and I think he'll be REAL hard to top, perhaps the 60-100 hour campaign has to do with that. This game has made me VERY excited for GTA VI and what it can provide.... but for now, I'm just hoping for a SP DLC that can expand on the universe. Hopefully an in-canon one this time, there's so much potential and I could easily see GTA IV fashioned DLC

I've played every Rockstar game ever, aside from Midnight Club and Table Tennis.

I'd say yes, Arthur Morgan tops every single R* games protagonist so far.

When playing as John Marston, I figured he would be Rockstar's best due to his seek for redemption, and ending loose knots in his past to keep his family.

Then there is Arthur. Without giving too much away, the level of depth with his character is comparable to what Freddie Mercury is to music. There is such a range in their personalities, traits, actions, and speech that fluctuate.

Niko is likely my third favorite.

Hes definitely the most "alive" feeling character in the sense of like progression and feeling you know? Like with niko it didnt really feel like he really was striving for sh*t but with Arthur you get the sense of feeling like you need too provide for the people around you and the missions with Mary Linton are good examples of that. No matter how bad of a guy you play deep down there is a human being in that character that knows right from wrong.

Yes definetly. I have never seen a character develope as much as Arthur during a game. He starts out as a cold loner, then later on he starts caring about the people around him

So I just finished the story, and Arthur Morgan is without a doubt one of my favourite protagonists ever. On par with Niko Bellic in terms of character depth and development. In fact, let me sum it up in more details below, but beware of spoilers. View hidden content at your own risk!

I was actually quite disheartened when Arthur was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and throughout much of the game since then I loved seeing his shift in life. I chose to help John at the end of Chapter 6, and the fact he was so determined to let him get out of the life even when his own was coming to an end, I really love it. I even felt sad when his horse got shot (I mean for god's sake, I NAMED that thing

☹️. Even after completing the last 70% as John Marston though I actually miss him. I feel nothing whenever I kill Michael or Trevor in GTA V (I had a save to test that out) and honestly, I couldn't care less about them. But Arthur I still miss to this moment, so props to Rockstar on that half!

I very much like Arthur Morgan. I can see that the second trailer of the game could give off bad vibes for the character but none of the trailers do the character justice, nor does it do the campaign any justice.

He's up there with Niko and Max Payne for me. Really enjoyed playing as him.

Major story spoiler

Watching his health decline during chapter 5 and 6 was awful. That one part where he tells the nun at the train station that he's scared to die is absolutely brutal.

It was great playing a Rockstar  game with a protagonist and NPCs I actually liked again after hating almost every single character in GTA V.

I feel like Arthur defines the whole concept for Red Dead REDEMPTION way better than John. I mean its hard not going into spoilers, but as some mentioned, the character development is very captivating and makes him feel like a real person. He is totally relatable. And towards the and of the story there is a particular Stranger Mission with an returning character, which almost made me cry. I’m totally hooked to Morgan’s story and his personality, his dramas, his questions. To me he is one of the best characters R* has ever created, easily. And I just love his accent.

I definitely really like the way his character is conveyed to the player- it's not blatantly thrown into our faces that Arthur is supposed to be a certain way.

Instead you get a whole lot of small interactions with people that slowly build up his character so that he grows with the player, and a whole of lot small world-building details (the most important of which is the journal) that suggests that he's more than what he seems to be.

I haven't played that many R* games, because my game interest was in a totally different genre, but of all those I did play, Arthur is by far the best protagonist I've played. I even dare saying he might even beat any other game protagonist I've played, but I'm not done with the game yet, so I can't say.

Please no spoiler replies, but if Arthur kicks Dutch's ass one day, he'll climb high up the ladder real fast.

For me up there with Niko, probably higher than Niko.

I appreciate that Rockstar decided against a playable trio or so like in GTA V.

I find him similar to Johnny Klebitz and that's a good thing

They're both senior members in a gang that has internal struggles and is falling apart because of poor leadership

I don’t understand how Niko is in anyone’s top 10. I hate him so much I can’t stand playing GTA IV unless it’s TLAD or TBOGT  haha

OT; Arthur is amazing, the way he reacts to every little thing in the world and you have the ability to influence how he develops blows my mind.  10/10, top character from Rockstar (Until they made GTA:SA again lol)

How is Niko not in your Rockstar top ten of protagonist. What did you dislike because to me he was a good tragic character. He wanted a new life and before he did that he wanted to tie up loose ends from his past life. Niko is a character that in my opinion started this deeper and more personal looks at Rockstar protagonist. After his introduction the stories of newer games had more realism to them and you could attach yourself to certain characters and feel for their struggles in their respective lives. I'd advise you to give him one more chance and go back and play the game as I did early I felt he was an okay character but I went back and played the game I was older now and I appreciated it more than me playing the game as an adolescent. Give niko one more try!

The problem with Niko is, he is just not fun.He is Way too serious and sad. Cheer up man! You're a GTA protagonist FFS!

Arthur is funny while being a respectable developed protagonist which makes him even better.

Arthur is the best protagonist of any Rockstar game so far. Part of that is due to the writing, but a lot of it probably has to do with the improved technology that allows for a far more nuanced performance by the actor and animation team.

It's not that hard actually. You just have a top 10 list and have Niko towards the very top (on top is better) and presto. You're done.

So far (i'm at the beggining of chapter 4) he's not the best character ever, in fact, i'd say he's quite poor as a character. Probably not the worse either, but he's poor in my humble opinion.

I respect everybody's opinion in here obviously, but for me he has the personality of a stick. He doesn't voice any particularly strong or interesting opinions, he has no smart humorous comebacks or charisma. The biggest display of anything close to a personality are during the missions where he's trying to collect money from debters in which case he acts like a tremendous bully douche. Not that that's bad given it's an outlaw, old west game but still nothing i sympathize with.

His motive are also virtually non-existent. Unlike Marston who had a purpose (finding Dutch, etc, saving his family, living a live of regret over his past) or Niko (wanted to be rich, esape Bulgarin, find the guy who killed his comrades, etc), Morgan's has no purpose. He literally just exists, serving the gang. Trying to escape some Pinkerton agents over a recent robbery. Thats it.

I think you may change opinions by the end of this very chapter. Maybe not but anyway, you come and tell us later :)

Im with you on that, I thought John Marston was one of the greatest but Arthur tops it. I liked him at the beginning but now it just seems to me like he's becoming a bit of a prick, except my friend pointed out he's the gang's enforcer so he's likely to be like that. Niko is hands down the best GTA protagonist character of all time, followed by Arthur and then probably Klebitz.

That's what makes him so great. He's just a normal person trying to get by. In real life, me and you literally only exist and have no real purpose - we work, play and eventually die. It's nice to not play someone on a journey of revenge for once.
