Without spoilers, I just gotta say I played through Arthur's story, and I really think he is the best Rockstar Games Character, anyone who agrees, about this?

I'm almost halfway the story and I like him way more than I thought I would, but IMO Niko's still the best character/protagonist R* have ever created. I'd place Arthur somewhere in the top 5 though even at this stage.

I won't spoil too much, but Arthur only becomes more interesting and interesting.

Definitely up there, but my time with CJ is hard to top.

But this game being compared to and reminding me so much of how San An was a game changer for me, this game is that epic.

Well at first I thought he would never live up to charm and wisdom of john marston….but now that I am 2/5 into the game...arthur morgan grows on you real fast, he is funny as hell, and on a dime be as ruthless as billy the kid, he is up there on top for me.

I'm a big fan.

I originally thought about Niko but Arthur is pretty much a perfection of the repentant outlaw character.

They're similar though. Niko has survivors guilt because his sins cause pain to other people. Only Arthur pays for them. Both are tragedies, in a way.

If the opinions here are true, I might go back on my decision of not buying the game, and buy it off the single player experience alone.

Though I'll wait for discount because now it's way too expensive for me to justify buying the game for single player only.

Incredible protagonist. Wish I could talk more but I'd spoil everything. I'll come back to this when it's ok to talk about the story. It's hard to say which R* protagonist is the best but Arthur is now up there as my favorites with John, Tommy, CJ, Michael and Trevor.

Is he like Trevor or Michael, in terms of personality? Or that's up for the player to decide?

He is kind of a perfect mix

Only in chapter 2 but so far he's pretty great. Way more personality than people gave him credit for based on the trailers.  He has a lot of depth.  I'll see how I feel after getting through more of the story.  I will say that I think John Marston's voice acting performance is unbeatable - the guy doing Arthur is a bit more broad, especially that accent of his; Marston in both RDR and RDR2 just sounds like that's the voice of a real guy, not an actor.  But Arthur's voice still works for the character and makes him very memorable and meme-able, which isn't a bad thing.

He isnt like either one of them tbh. Completely different personality.

I love him and John equally. Out of all the games I have played since I was a kid, John Marston, Arthur Morgan, Naked Snake (MGS3) and Joel (The Last of Us) are the ones whom I hold dearest.

Hmm Its an interesting one, I don't think there is any major character development in most of Rockstar's protagonists, Arthur certainly stands out in that respect.

its all about the Lance Vance Dance baby!

Tough.

My #1 would be Niko Bellic. GTA IV holds a special place on my top videos games list. Arthur is a really cool character though. I like his attitude and sarcastic remarks at times. He does have some humor to him but humor that isn’t forced and isn’t cringe worthy which I like. He’s a badass character to put it simply.

Michael and Trevor? Not at all. You have choice. But his overall personality is pretty much what it is.  He has some serious character development throughout the story.

One character that eh... “kind of” had a story to him was Daniel Lamb from Manhunt 2. The flashbacks and what not. Not really in depth development but it did give you a sense of how Daniel was a really twisted character.

I admit I was expecting some one dimensional badass cowboy but I really like him. He is certainly one of their best. Whether he is the best above all others is a matter of debate but he has a ton of depth.

I agree with all of you. I can’t say he’s the top character (although, maybe he is, but I haven’t seen enough to decide), but he’s definitely in the top 5 after about 35% completion.

One thing I really, really like is the subtle expressions, as I think they do so much to build character. Just like in movies and TV. But it’s quite a new thing for games. But yeah, the way Arthur smirks, squints, and other stuff like his posture, how he turns to look around - all these things combined create a very interesting character. How he does it in response to what others say, or do.. it’s giving me goosebumps just thinking about it. I want to get back to playing!

But apart from that, character-wise, he’s definitely up in the top. This is a very interesting character and he just seems to become more and more so the more you play.

It’s pure joy to spend time with people from the camp. I’ve really come to appreciate the interconnections between the characters. I’ve also come to despise some of those characters...

I voted "one of the 10 best", but he's in Top 3 definetly.

Haven't completed the story yet but yeah... the writing and the voice-acting for him is just incredible.

He might very well be my favorite by the end.

Definitely one of the best ones in Rockstar's line of protagonists.

Arthur's character is well-written and consistent, but most importantly, feels like someone self-aware and conscious of their actions, which I think most players are at times. This means that the gap between player and character action is reduced a lot, and that it feels like you're playing someone who's more intelligent than they look.

I also like that he possesses some more 'feminine' skills (writing & drawing) along with his traditional hard 'masculine' (gameplay) skills, as it helps soften his edge and makes him more relatable while still being able to kicks ass.

Haven't enjoyed any character more than him.

After GTA V's disappointment (I hate Franklin more than any character I've ever played) he is amazing.

Wait, no, my GTA online character is the best. Arthur second.

Yes. Far and away, yes.

He's standing alone on top of a mountain that is a mile above every other Rockstar character ever dreamed up, besides maybe Trevor, but Trevor is falling down some cliffs somewhere near the bottom, a hundred feet above everyone else below in the swamps. Basically, Arthur has no real competition.

Arthur Morgan is pretty much the ultimate mythological cowboy when considering all literature, be it film, TV, literature or video games. That makes him, quite easily, the best, most important and pivotal character Rockstar has come up with.

It will be difficult for them to ever outdo him. It will be difficult for anyone in any art form to outdo what Rockstar has done for the cowboy with Arthur.

I've warmed to him as we go along. I think the turning point was when he takes young Jack fishing. He comes across at first as a drawling, dumb heavy, but your choices with him can make him into a very likeable and sympathetic character. What is very interesting to me is how much John Marston appears in this game (which I wasn't actually expecting), alongside scenes with Arthur, and you can compare them directly as characters. They are very different. Both well written though.

I'm of the opinion though that the two games, as companion pieces, are John Marston's story.
