RunRunner
Okay, so I never post on these things, but I felt motivated to create an account and see if others are experiencing this issue (or if it even really is an issue)... So I’ve basically just started RDR2... I’m off the mountain, and tasked with exploring Valentine, and there’s the first three missions on the board... My problem is that no matter what I do, somebody will attack me at some point, probably every ten minutes or so. It might be O’Connels, it might be some guy on the road who runs his horse into mine and gets mad, it might just be some guy in town who’s standing outside a door, and when I walk out, we slightly bump. However it happens, I’m never the guy to draw first. And of course the button to calm the situation is always grayed out. So basically, I am given the choice of letting the psycho(s) kill me, or defending myself. EVERY TIME I HAVE DEFENDED MYSELF, I am then somehow guilty of murder, and a wanted man. There have even been a couple times where some lunatic starts shooting for no reason, and I run away... Still I’m wanted. Who the hell are these “witnesses”, btw? Friends or relatives of the weirdos shooting at me? Lol I have almost no money, yet owe every place on the map I’ve been more money than I have. Unless money becomes much, much, MUCH easier to come by as the game goes by, I don’t see how I will EVER be able to pay off these wanted bounties. And again, I’m “innocent”, or whatever. I’m just defending myself from guys who want to start shooting for NO REASON. Basically, I kind of find myself tip-toeing around, trying to get even the simplest thing accomplished, like say, getting from the woods to a town to successfully sell a pelt without... what? I don’t know- my horse makes too much noise or something? Which causes some psycho to start blasting, which then brings the law because it’s somehow my fault, and sidetracks the whole damn thing. It’s just not very... Fun. I find myself so tense and focused on not making a single wrong move which will cause the whole stack of cards to come down. It’s just kind of tedious. Anyway... Does this sound right? Anyone else experiencing this? Is my game bugged? Is the game in general bugged in terms of overly-aggressive AI’s and the rules of self-defense? If so, is RockStar doing anything to fix this and make it more playable? Nothing is wrong with your game. From what you described, everything seems normal. All of that is normal gameplay. You just have to be a bit more careful and think about what you are doing. Watch where you are going. If you get into an altercation while in town, best thing to do is run away. Fighting or killing will always end up with a bounty on your head. Too many people in town, too many witnesses. Reinstalling will likely accomplish nothing. AmyStone
I agree. You might have just been unlucky and stumbled on things you shouldn't have. Play the game like it's real. Things have gone a lot better for me since I've been more careful when riding around and making sure I don't bump into people. Sonny_Black
Here is a couple of advices for you; -Pull out your gun only if it's a matter of life or death. -Always defuse the situation and/or walk away. Sometimes it will not work and it's not fair but that's how it is. -Don't rush, especially with your horse, be careful of your surrounding. If you bump into someone on foot violently, apologize and walk away. -As said above, play the game like it's real. -If you want to rob and kill people, do it in the wilderness for start and then if you commit crime in populated places, make sure nobody is around and put a bandana or a mask on, that way even if there is witnesses and the crime is reported, you can ride away and you will not be indentified. -Lawmen do shoot at other people if needed. Sometimes you didn't started it and it's not fair, that's how it is. Don't except the game to be gentle on you, you can't always win. See it like 'Westworld', you can be whoever you want and do what you want, but there is always consequences even if minimal. You can become the Man in Black, sure but be ready to deal with the consequences. If you have some clip of what happened to you, I'm sure me and the others would gladly take a look at it. BatLB
I rushed my horse through a city.ran over a guy - witness called the police. policeman attacked my horse, I jumped off, shot him, ran into the harbor, got followed by 30 police men, killed most of them, even more came, I fell into the water, couldn't find a ladder back up, drowned. lost 4 perfect skins on my horse and got 315 Dollar Bounty. 10/10 would rush through city again Mister Pink, TDWPMark, slippery slope and 4 others
Deadman2112
I get into fights all the time but get no bounty if I split right after. As soon as you are seen doing anything you can get a bounty for get on your horse and run. As long as you get out of town fast an the law men don't see you, Instead of saying wanted it should say investing. However killing someone in a town almost always gets a bounty on your head. KingpinRCR
I feel ya op. This is my first rdr game, I bought it because of gtaforums. It seems everybody wants to do me harm. Even when i’m out in the wilderness and I can see for miles there seems to be some invisible witness. Everytime I greet someone I get unfriendly or even aggressive responses. Defusing the situation never seems to work. I always defuse, turn around and walk away, yet they keep comming after me to attack me. I wanted to be the good guy on my first playthrough, but everything I do makes me the bad guy. Find a corpse in the middle of nowhere, loot it -> bad guy. Why? He’s not going to use it anymore and there no-one around for miles... And than there is the “issue” with the controls. I’m not used to them yet, I don’t know which button does what, which results in me accidentally doing something the other inhabbitants don’t like by accident. Yeah, your experience seems like my gameplay. I appreciate the other responses above counseling to be careful, but believe me, I am being EXTREMELY cautious... During like the first half hour of play (after I got off the mountain), sure, I ran my horse through town, talked sh*t to somebody if they acted like a dick, etc. etc. But for the last several hours I’ve been dotting my i’s and crossing my t’s... But the game perpetually forces me into a conflict, no matter how cautiously I play, and then brings the whole damn world down on me. Even when I act like a giant pussy and back down. And that, I guess, beyond the plain technical frustration of trying to get through a mission, is my biggest beef... I don’t want to play as a giant pussy. Arthur Morgan is apparently an outlaw and gunfighter. From what I can gather, a rather notorious one. Why is every f*cking townie farmer swaggering up to him and treating him like a punk? Why does the game have such a weird compulsion to make you play like that? I’m all for realism. Make it realistic. Maybe have an element where townie guys, too afraid to fight you, might try to shoot you in the back (ala Bill Hickcock) if you insult them... Whereupon you can defend yourself, and witnesses will tell the sheriff it was a justified shooting... Whatever, I don’t know. But I do know that a game where a notorious outlaw and feared gunfighter has to tiptoe around like a scared kitten while random jackasses harass and attack him, and he has to just take it, like McFly getting a noogie from Biff... Well that is neither realistic nor fun. Edited November 3, 2018 by RunRunner unfairlane
Sonny_Black
Can you record some clip of all that, of how you play ? Beside Arthur and his crew are very well known and wanted in New Austin. You can play as a f*cking killer and outlaw but there will mostly be consequences, more or less. And fellers who make fun of you and provoke you just like that are gang members and criminal, they rob and kill anyone, they sees you, it's a challenge, don't think they will be afraid of you. You will not always win in this game, whether you were right or not. How many hours I roamed and walked around Valentine ans Saint Denis without any problem. TyrionV
I was the same to begin with. I actually thought the bounties were a deliberate thing to stop me going to certain areas of the map at the beginning! Mostly though it was like you described, bumping into folk or whatever. I had to pay around $2000 worth just to let me start exploring without being hunted down!
RunRunner
f*ck this. Explain the “realism” of a bunch of O’Connel Gang members hanging around Valentine and beating a guy to death, nobody says anything, then when they see me from across the street and start shooting, I’m wanted. Explain to me the “realism” of saving a kidnap victim being chained in a basement, (I didn’t hurt anybody or actually “rob” anything to do it), and I’m wanted. Explain to me the “realism” of riding on a railroad track and accidentally coming upon a train robbery, while the robbers are in the act of fleeing and when I decide it’s none of my business and head the opposite direction they turn back from where they were fleeing to chase me and kill the f*cking White Arabian I spent TWO f*ckING HOURS acquiring. Yes, I had the horse reviver. Yes, they let the timer circle nearly close before killing me, ensuring not only do I lose the f*cking horse, but I lose the reviver tonic as well. f*ck, explain the “realism” of literally just riding on an empty road at night doing nothing and suddenly the “witness to a crime” alert pops up, followed shortly by “wanted”. I love Rock Star games. But I’m not a fanboy of anything. I’ll call it like I see it... And this game needs f*cking fixes. Anybody who thinks this is “realistic”, or perfect, or otherwise unflawed is speaking out of fanboyism, not objectivity. unfairlane
Go Team Venture
NOOOOOOOO WHITEY BULGER!!! WHYYYYYYYY I feel your pain. Can’t stop playing, no matter how many times this game breaks my heart. I just lost my white arabian during a random shootout I wasn’t even part of, I ran up the street to save him but he was already dead. I think I’m going to go see if the rumors that they respawn at the lake are true. If they are I will report back.

At the beginning, you get bounties quickly, for way more money than you have, you're getting killed all the time by bounty hunters because you don't have enough ammo or a decent gun or game experience, and it's pretty frustrating. Not exactly incentivizing. In between slowly doing missions, I reverted to my tried-and true mindless grinding mode, honed to perfection from years of experience in GTA Online, for hours and hours, to loot enough money to buy a better gun and some ammo, so I could slowly crawl out of the hole. Now I'm still grinding, out of habit, laying in wait for bounty hunters, so I can take them down with the satisfying sound of my Lancaster Repeater, loaded with Express and High Velocity Ammo, and looting them for a few buck so I can run back to the Fence. Deep.
Go Team Venture
So, I’m off-topic, but yeah, you can get another white Arabian from the lake up north. I just did it. Whitey Bulger LIVES! Funny story about reality and the game: I just went into Valentine to go the stables to rename her. There was some dude by the camp challenging another dude to a duel and he killed the guy. Then because I was watching he challenged me to a duel too, and I accepted and I only wounded him and I’m wanted for assault!!!! So I assaulted a dude who just murdered somebody but I’m the bad guy ha ha ha ha yeezy203

RyuNova
I say this with as much respect as I can but what the f*ck are you people doing? You don't just randomly get Bounties on you for nothing or gently bumping into people. The game has an inbuilt system where NPCs move out of your way so unless you are actively aiming for them or moving so fast the system can't keep up then you should not be hitting them and if you are then it's your own fault. Stop sprinting and galloping everywhere. Apart from scripted events in towns you won't ever get attacked unless you instigate it. Out of towns you have plenty of space and it's easy to avoid people even when you gallop. Ever since I've been riding more careful and using my mask at the right time I've never had a bounty. Chrismads
I bumped in to a guy in saint denis. He said "hey watch out." I said "YOU GOD DAMN MAGGOT". A policeman started looking from 15 ft away. The guy came over and pushed me so i beat the sh*t out of him right infront of the cop. I then greeted the cop and said something like "you're doing a good job".. no bounty. Later same day I slit the throat on some random women in an alley, with a mask on. Ran around the corner and took off the mask and waited. When the law came to investigate I walked up to them with my bloody hands. They questioned me a bit and i answered so they told me to move along. I don't how you're doing it wrong, maybe pay attention to what's going on and what you're doing. ShadyCreeksKiller
I’m glad that I have to stay on my toes and can’t simply stand around or run around without consequences. One of the biggest immersion breakers in open world games, let’s use GTAV as an example, is the virtual invincibility you have. Short of standing around gang members or getting in fist fights, you were safe...just don’t get the cops on you. Part of what makes RDR2 more immersive and dynamic is the litany of NPCs (and animals) that can harm you.
