Can you disable HUD - fully and entirely?

Recommended Posts

OurJud

I've asked this question and been assured you can, but whenever I ask this question - whatever the game - I never seem to be able to stress enough exactly what I mean. When I ask this question most people think I'm just asking in general terms, and will answer yes, you can turn it off. But then I find that in fact you can't disable the HUD (at least not to the degree I require.

Case in point I've just checked some 'No HUD' gameplay for this game and immediately notice that all manner of crap is popping up on the screen whenever an 'interactive' moment takes place. You step up to the horse and get a glut of button prompts. You loot a body and get a silly little icon showing you what you've taken. And no doubt these little pop-up appear for all manner of actions in the game.

So I'm asking again. Yes, the main HUD can be disabled, but can the plethora of button prompts and other help icons be disabled too?

Try turning off the tips in the menu? Not sure that would help all of your question, but it would get rid of a lot of the notifications in the upper left.

I don't own the game, as it happens. This is just homework.

Thanks for the reply, all the same.

No, because the button prompts are required to play the game. There is no way you could remember them all and perform them without seeing them. Especially the weapon wheel stuff.

Only thing you can't turn off is the bottom right hand context menu.

Im fine with getting button prompts at my horse or other things I can interact with. However I am not a fan of getting info of my targets, ie if I aim at an animal it shows me info about what animal it is, or if I aim at a NPC it will show me what NPC it is. Like if I find a camp out in the wild with people and I aim at one of them it will show in the right corner ”O’Driscoll”. That aiming information should be able to be turned off! On that topic I am also not a fan of the reticle becoming red in general when you aim at animals or enemies - I personally don’t want to know where I have the reticle aimed, its too handholding and takes you out of the immersion. Let me see it myself where it is aimed, dont give me magical info.

Yeah I know what you mean. I'd definitely like the aiming reticle to stay white regardless of whether the shot will hit or not. It would make getting a shot off more satisfying.

Well that settles it then. It also saves me £50. I'm genuinely not interested now I know all this. I've been somewhat underwhelmed by what gameplay I've seen, anyway, but if all this HUD info is forced on you then I can move on and put my interest in other upcoming games.

For the life of me I'll never understand gaming developers who put years into a game's immersion elements, only to kill it stone dead with silly hand-holding button prompts and pop-up information.

LOL. It's a video game folks, not real life.

You want immersion? Eliminate spawns. Make it completely life like. When you are dead, you are dead and must restart from the beginning. 50 hours in a game and you die before the final cutscene? Too bad, back to zero. Damn hand holding respawns.

But there are things in video games you can easily overlook - such as respawns. At least if you're me. I appreciate I'm in a minority with my obsession regarding this kinds of on-screen info, and you're right it really shouldn't matter. But the fact is it does for me, and I simply couldn't play the game in its current state.

What games allow the level of HUD removal that you need? I can't think of many games that have less of a HUD than RDR2 overall, even with it all left turned on.

Just curious, as I think highly enough of this game that I believe everyone should at least try it out once.

GTA V, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Killzone 2/3/4, Farcry 5

Mate I'd say if you can deal with all of those menus and inventories that Fallout, Skyrim and Far Cry have, you would be just fine in RDR2. Those are 100x more immersion breaking than the prompts in the corner, at least imo.

I'm not gonna beat a dead horse here, just saying if you can rent, borrow, or even shareplay the game on PS4, I highly recommend at least giving it a shot.

I normally wouldn't say all this but it seems you want an immersive game, and man this is one, at least to me. Figured I'd try to do some convincing lol.

But the elements you're referring to in those games are no where near as bad as they appear to be in RDR2. I can play all those games you mention for hours on end without ever encountering a single on-screen element. In Fallout, with HUD opacity set to zero, you get absolutely nothing on screen until you trigger it. Things like looting bodies and crates/boxes can be done blindly (on-screen info only pops up if you choose to search the bodies/create). The crosshair can be disabled, there's no auto-targeting (VATS in optional), or names popping up over the enemies head when you aim at them. Farcry 5 and Skyrim are less obtrusive still.

Seriously, if you think the HUD and on-screen menus in those games are worse than RDR2, I can only assume you didn't explore the gameplay options properly.

Except Skyrim and Fallout have PC releases and can be modded day one to solve these issues.

You would be correct in that assumtion, because I typically just play with everything on default, aside from RDR2 because it's so easy to remove the minimap so I do it often.

Oh well, thought I'd give it a shot.

That is irrelevant to this conversation. Don't try to stir up that nonsense in here.

While this may be true, I play them all on PS4 and the vanilla HUD options are fine for me.

Well, please take my word for it that in all those games given as examples the entire HUD can be disabled, as can all button prompts and other forms of pop-up hand-holding.

Take the horse interaction for example. I mean, really. You walk up to your horse and there's... what? Five, six things you can do? Mount, lead, feed, pat, brush. I'm not suggesting I'm some kind of memory genius here, but it would take me all of five minutes to memorise what does what. It's the same with any interaction button prompts, like games that throw up a huge "X to open door" whenever you step up to one. Why do I need to be told this all the time???

I appreciate options are good but the context menu is really important in RDR2 so I can see why they didn't want to let peope remove it.  It's not just 5 or 6 options that you've got to remember, there's dozens of things you can do with the L2/LT context menu and they change all the time depending on what you're doing and where you're looking.  It just wouldn't make any sense to remove it.  Sometimes Square/X is the option to be nice to someone, another time it's the option to jack their horse.  Sometimes Triangle/Y is the button to call out to someone, another time it'll be the option to rob them.

Well then that's just bad game design.

I'm not suggesting any of these help icons should be removed, but why not at least give folk the option to get rid should they so choose? Shouldn't it be up to me to decide what information I have on screen, rather that the developers assuming I need it and forcing it on me?

Have you played the game yet?  It's not assuming you need it, you do need it.  Like I said, I'm not totally against having the option to remove it as I tend to like no HUD on games if possible too, it would just make the game almost unplayable so I can see why Rockstar haven't included that option.

Yeah it would definitely be unplayable. Especially for stuff like quick time events. Times when you need to tap instead of hold, etc. The prompts in the corner are the only way you know what to do.

So like I say bad game design. If these prompts are essential then it can't be very intuitive.

But the reasons are academic. Fact remains I couldn't enjoy this game with so much stuff popping up all the time.

And I still maintain a lot of it just isn't needed. I watched some gameplay of a guy setting up camp and there were never more than three button options at the given stages (sitting by the fire, pitching tent, climbing inside the tent, sleeping, packing up). Are you telling me you couldn't simply learn what button did what at these moments?
