The Red Dead Redemption 2 "Constructive Criticism" Thread

Recommended Posts

I can’t help but point out the irony of all the sh*t talking some people did about open world rpg games on the rdr2 sub forum and then have this game be described as ‘rpg like’ multiple times, haha! I think I’m liking the sound of this game more and more but I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop and the over monetization and locked online only content rears it’s ugly head.

For a game that is going for realism and tries to hide as many menus as possible I'm quite disappointing in the fact that the map is stuffed away in the OPTION screen. At least you can open the map when holding the OPTION button, but still.

Man, if this had come out to PC, I would've installed mods that remove the button holding and the need to use arrow types and pelt/hide quality.

Seriously, what the f*ck were they thinking?

The button holding is very annoying, why did they need to do this? It slows down the game considerably

If your sprawling, 60-hour game doesn't let you at least replay things from a menu somewhere (even if you have to wait until afterwards to mop up missed stuff), then you can take that middle finger and stuff it up your own backside, whoever-it-was who made that particular call...

(I need to stop singing this game's praises eventually, but Assassin's Creed Syndicate has a big page of every possible activity in the game, and you can replay any of 'em as soon as you unlock them the first time - rinsing through 100% completion was a breeze!)

Do they not have a quicksave like GTA V? Or mission replays?

The game seems to have San Andreas Style RPG mechanics. It's not even near to being officially called an RPG . most importantly it doesn't have the most annoying thing RPG games have (IMO) which is leveled Enemies and basically having XP.

So is there a way to turn auto-save off a have Mindless fun?

Saving is the biggest issue of the game so far.

ok one thing that is grating me, i had a repeater, a revolver and a shotgun stored on my default horse, then when i did the mission in one of the small towns where i had to steal another horse to chase some guy i eventully returned to my old horse, opened up the horse's satchel and only the repeater is in there? i've lost two weapons. maybe its something i'll work out but quite annoying now

also there seem to be a lot of annoying little things in the game mechanics i don't like, for example you can't sell jewelry or watches at the general store? i'm sitting on $15 that i could really use but nowhere to sell it? damaged pelts being worthless is another mechanic that doesn't really need to exist, having to eat is annoying as well. i do enjoy having to keep the camp stocked with food in general as it makes hunting more worthwhile but you can't store very much on the horse which is going to make everything more laborious.

all in all, enjoying the game, but don't know why the hunting and skinning gameplay has been designed to be such a pain

you need to go elsewhere to sell it. There's something for this.

- day/night cycle all too fast

- visual mesh effect (especially cloud formation) (ps4 pro)

I will say this, some of the mechanical additions can be confusing. I'm not at all a fan of the "cores" system and how you need to keep them replenished on a regular basis. I like how the weapon system works, but it can be annoying getting off your horse and finding that you're not carrying a weapon that you forgot to mantain.

That said, I don't understand some of the complaints about the map and how it's apparently "dead" and "empty", when really it's no more than such than the original RDR (if anything, it feels more alive). Besides, it's a rural-based wild-west game, so I don't know what else you could expect personally.

One of my bigger concerns going in unfortunately holds up.  The game clock is way too fast for what the game's trying to do.  You can walk into the general store in the morning, have a browse through the excellently in depth catalogue and by the time you're finished it's night time, or maybe even the next morning.  That's just ridiculous and completely ruins some of the immersion for me.  I really don't understand why they haven't fixed that or at least added an option to change it depending on your play style.

Look, I love the game and there's no doubt I'm gonna spend dozens of hours in it so it can't be that bad but there's a ton of annoyances that I feel could've been avoided.

I think it's all the more frustrating because this game is so close to being as perfect as I'd hoped, there's just a lot of little things holding it back.

The more posts I read in this thread, the less bitter I feel about not being able to pick it up on release.

I do find myself slightly torn, however. I love Fallout 4 so find all these comparisons to that game encouraging, but it seems as though there's essentially nothing to do. The reason I'm still playing Fallout 4, and long since stopped playing GTA V, is because there's always something to do in the former. I can work on my settlements (most of them still not maxed out in terms of size). Walking out into the world to scavenge for stuff still feels worth it and finding tins of caps and ammo is still a 'Yes!' moment, because they're genuinely beneficial to your status within the game. And when / if I do start to get bored, I have a ton of mods to play around with. None of that was part of GTA V's free roaming aspects, and it was boring because of it.

So here we have an open world, first-person game by R* with elements similar to Fallout 4 - sounds like a dream come true - and yet, even without having played this game something feels terribly off... as though R* may have dropped their biggest blunder to date.

I've always maintained R* could make an absolute killer open-world apocalypse RPG survival game, and the more I read about RDR2 the more I wish they had.

Just got to St Denis and unfortunately the frame rate is pretty poor, even while doing random stuff like riding a horse through the town etc. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? Slim PS4 here. :(

Time to play some stunt car racer on your Amiga for a few hours. Then go back to the ps4 and 25 frames will be mint.. game wont be as fun but it'll look smooth again

Well that's because you're currently checking out a thread which is meant to be filled with the game's flaws. You won't find anything positive here. I don't know why you're surprised. This thread is meant to be filled with the game's problems. Even if this game was the best thing ever this thread could still be filled with the problems since every game has flaws.

I never said I was surprised. And I know this is for posting the game's flaws - that's why I read it. I'm not particularly interested in what the game does well because it's not as helpful. It's like amazon reviews. One should always read the 1 and 2 star reviews because they're far more useful than the 5-star reviews.

That's not very sound logic, people that have no issues with something will most times not post about it at all, so the rate of problems vs. no problems is actually a lot lower than you think, as only the people with complaints will be vocal. Amazon reviews are a great example of this, people who like products will not always rate it 4-5 stars, but people who hate them will almost always run to rate them negatively, and this doesn't mean at all that the product is bad. People just complain more than they praise.

This thread only points out the flaws. "reviews" always point out pros and cons at the same time. But you got something right. This thread is perfect for you if you want to feel good about not picking the game up. It's a clear thing. The more bad sh*t you hear about a product you ignored the more satisfied you feel about your action and the more positive things you read the more you feel you're missing out.

A good place to learn things too.

Often in the GTA:O B&M thread players would do their bitching (rightfully of course). But often some just made a mistake or misread something in-game with just how much there can be to remember. Great place to share nuggets, IMO.

But if ya looking for comfort in seeing the crap or dig out folks loving their gaming, it's good for that too. Entertaining. :)

It's a bit early for learning things though. Right now no one seems to know what the f*ck is going on in the game. It takes a while to get used to the game since it's Rockstar's most complicated game to date.

Eh, it depends on where you're coming from, I had low expectations for this game, so none of the complaints seem too bad at the moment. The few complaints that have caught my attention were actually pretty informative because I never even considered them, like the weird button configuration or the complicated menus, they're just giving me a better picture of the game. Now if it turns out a lot of sh*t was held back for the multiplayer, then I'll feel vindicated AF.

It's kinda funny, a few people seem very let down by the game, mainly because they obsessed over and hyped the game so much - if the game manages to not sh*t itself with the Online only bullsh*t (no one can say it wont yet, it's only been out for a day), I'll probably wind up enjoying the game way more than those people who meticulously followed the game for months, picking apart every little detail and blowing things out of proportion in their heads, ultimately ruining the game for themselves because nothing could match what they made up in their minds.

This all might end in two very valuable lessons:

- It pays to be a cynic.

- and never, ever jump onto the hype train because you just might ruin the very thing you're hyped about. Just chill out and wait and see how things unfold.

Well I was on the hype train and I'm alright. But I rather call myself a realist.

Gotta warn you though I'm actually certain there WILL BE online only content. Only this time we MIGHT get SP ONLY content as well. Don't know how you would feel about that but to me it doesn't seem good based on the fact that they already confirmed a gun and a horse being only in online. But once again I'm sensing an SP EXCLUSIVE DLC as well. They really seem to treat Online and SP as different games that each have their own purpose. Things might look better in your eyes if you accept that as well but that's up to you. For me Red Dead Redemption 2 is one game and Red Dead Online is another and nothing can ruin the SP for me if it's good enough it's own no matter what happens later in online. (unless they break it by releasing constant updates for online)

This. The night's go WAY to quick. I also felt the stars looked a bit too big. The first RDR had it spot on the way they glittered across the sky. Other than that. Perfect game.

It looks like R* put immersion onto the players instead of giving them agency to choose. I don’t like that.
