The Red Dead Redemption 2 "Constructive Criticism" Thread

If you like shooting things and big explosions, then games from Rockstar are not made with you in mind.

Gonna have to cut you off there. A majority of their titles are faster paced than this game. Also, it’s not about the slower pace that makes the game boring or unenjoyable. It’s the incredible amount of linearity and forced immersion that makes the game a slog. Some people do not want to spend 5-10 minutes riding all over the map and holding buttons all day. The notion that people are ADHD impatient folks is ridiculous. Bad game design is still bad game design.

Something being not your own cup of tea =! bad game design. The things you and most of the folk in the B&M thread are berating, is exactly why it is loved by others. It's a slow, deliberate, non-gamey experience which completely immerses you in the world. It's not insta-gratification, endless pockets, arcade-walk-over-stuff-to-pick-it-up. It's not GTA. It's RDR.

And don't stay near someone who told you to leave.

The latter kind of sucks, since he still drew his weapon on you for no good reason, though.

Well it was weird one because they were standing near Photo studio in St Denise. So while I was hitching my horse they already started to act hostile and then I just tried to avoid them and get inside the studio. However,  they drew their guns and started to shoot at me and left me no choice.  It would be nice if we can just surrender to law enforcement while they "investigate " instead of shoot to kill approach even though I never drew gun out on them. Maybe there is an option to surrender?

Indeed! I for one love these things! The good definitely outweighs the bad by miles. Nowadays if there is something a player doesn't quite like, the full game is immediately bad. I heard someone say skinning is boring, but it turns out you can just skip that if you wish. I don't know for sure since I haven't played, but I for one will go through each of that scene and not skip. It's more immersive and it makes the game last longer.   :)

Does that excuse it for being super slow paced, boring and really, really dull?

It took five hours to really get into the meat of the game. If a film took five hours to get going wouldn't you call it sh*t?

Hopefully there is an option to surrender. Would be weird otherwise. Heck, I think it personally would have been cool if they'd drop you in a jail where you could free-roam in. Maybe even fight with other prisoners if they're there? And you can either decide to escape, pay off the debt or wait for an in-game day until they release you.

I couldn't disagree more. As said to the other guy, maybe it just isn't your cup of tea - that doesn't mean it's bad. In fact, I've put many many hours into it over the weekend and haven't been bored for a minute. It boggles the mind how someone could be bored in such an expansive and living world. But here we are.

The intro takes 2/3 hours and after that the world, and everything in it is free for you to explore. Don't see how that in any way or shape qualifies as 'sh*t'.

This is an uncompromisingly slow game.  Which is what I like about it.  You're supposed to stop and smell the roses - and pick them, turn them into a tonic, and sell that tonic in a meticulously detailed general store where the wood floors creak and dust motes glitter in the sun.  It's an exploration-and-simulation type of game.  If RDR was not really GTA-on-horses, this game is as far away from that as possible while still being kind of in the same 3rd-person, open-world genre.  It's slow as hell on purpose, and it's not going to be for everyone.  Personally I found it very slow at first - much slower than RDR - but after questioning the design, the next couple times I played I found myself getting utterly lost in it.  I spent a good 30 minutes today hunting one deer, only because it was more rewarding to crouch in the tall grass and follow its trail, looking for a perfect bow-shot, than to ride around until I could just quickly deadeye one to death; that's the kind of game this is.

Which is admittedly not going to be for everyone.

Regarding the graphics, I don't know how you could play this for more than 3 minutes and think it's only a marginal improvement on GTA V.  It is significantly better-looking in every single respect.  I would agree that it's not quite as eerily beautiful as Horizon though (although it is more detailed I think).  Rockstar keeps upping their game, but the state-of-the-art graphics games are PS exclusives (by which I mean Horizon and Uncharted 4/Last of Us 2).  However, this is a REALLY good-looking game, and as an overall technical achievement I think it surpasses even those games I just mentioned.

Five hours of a 50+ hour game is about the same as 10 minutes of a 100+ minute film.  So no, I wouldn't.  I'd chastise myself for being so damn impatient.

I was like that well kind of, once I unlocked free roam I felt lost, didn't know where to start but I think that was because I was tired from a long day at work, but the more I started playing the more I started immersing myself into the game and bored I am no more with this game, maybe you gotta make your self some time while being fully energized and not tired or bored to begin with, hopefully that helps and if you still don't get into it then hopefully you have a physical copy and you can sell it

Yeah, maybe there is but I didn't see anything. I know that we can hold down triangle to rest if out of stamina so it could be that there is surrender button as well but when you are being hunted down first instinct is to run fast as you can. :)

yeah i don't get the honour/bounty system that well either.

yesterday i got in a barfight with some drunk who started the fight, after a while an NPC came in to HELP ME,that NPC kills the drunk, and i loot the body and move it to some other place  and i get a witness for that?

for some reason i did not get a bounty but still weird that the witness would report me,especially if he was in the saloon during the fight seeing that it was not me who started it and killed the drunk.

Don't loot people.  My guess is that even if it was self defense,  you still don't have right to take his possession since it should go to his family.

Horizon was my GOTY for 2017 and I love this game. I will say it is not everybody's cup of tea and I respect that but for somebody who likes my open worlds to be immersive and detailed it is right up my alley. I will admit the intro is slow paced but I still enjoyed and once you are done with it the game is addictive as hell. You really feel like you are an outlaw doing whatever it takes for survival.

I wouldn't call it boring, it's all a matter of taste. For instance, I've been far more interested in just seeing the animals and landscape than in doing story stuff. That's not going to be for everyone.

Think of it as less of a GTA crime sim, and more along the lines of an RPG, like The Elder Scrolls. It's a completely different game to Rockstar's usual output.

I think that's what misconstrues many peoples expectations of the game sure it's Rockstar Games the creators of GTA, and although they do share the same rage engine, this ain't GTA, and I applaud them for going in a whole other direction and I know this may not be a game for you, but I feel like I will play this for years and years to come!!!

As someone who absolutely adores Horizon and didn't expect RDR2's visuals to be better, well, they are IMO.

The games lighting in particular is a class above any other game I've played.

And as others have said, the slow paced intro and gameplay is completely deliberate. This is not a game - or a series - designed to be played at GTA or Horizon level speeds. It won't be for everyone, but the game wouldn't be the same experience without it. I spend so, so much of my time walking when I'm exploring, not running, because running around like a typical RPG protagonist just aint what this game is about.

My advice to a couple of people I've spoken to who were on the fence with it was to take it slow, explore, go out and interact with NPC's, the camp. The game throws fun and interesting content at you constantly. It's riddled with memorable moments both big and small.

You get a bounty/witness whenever you pick up a body. I have no idea why. I tried to pick a guy up my horse had crushed and instantly got a wanted level.

Disturbing/desecrating/transporting a corpse/disturbing a crime scene.

Take your pick, all are crimes even today. Only the Undertakers/Morticians/Law Enforcement had that right.

Part of the fun of RDR was sending people flying with my horse and now I get an instant bounty for it. Boooring.

I love the game. Seriously love it so much, I enjoyed nearly everything in the story.

But I don't like the witness thing. It's a good idea but it's just kind of bad. You do one crime and all you do for the next 10 minutes is run after witnesses. Because once you scared one, another saw that and then you have to scare that one too. And so on.

Also I don't like the slow walking in the camp. It takes just too long.

Third thing I don't like is how lets say you start the mission in camp, go to St. Denis during the mission. Then you finish the mission in camp just to find out the next mission is back in St. Denis. And the distance gets worse as the story progresses. I got so frustrated last night about having to travel from A to B all the time I just went to bed.

Excuse me for wanting to play a video game, not a movie that plays itself. And correct me if I’m wrong, but OP opened the thread with issues that seems unnecessary. Being ridiculously slow with spending 3-5 hours of tutorials is bad game design. The game does not need to be that complex. The game is consistent on micromanaging as if it’s real life and that’s not fun, especially from a game that is a sequel to a game that was more simple. It’s not about a matter of taste, but rather about pushing “immersion” as a number 1 priority over engagement with the player.

Took a 'help me' guy to the doctor in Valentine yesterday. He was still alive when I got there, but no doc was in the house. Dude died while looking for the doc and I got a wanted level, bounty and the population chasing me. Went back a save and left the 'help me' guy die when he was yelling for help when I saw him again. f*ck being mr Nice Guy!

As you see all over this forum and beyond, many, many people enjoy the level of immersion this game offers, and don't see it as a negative. So yes, it's very much a matter of taste. And this clearly isn't yours. That's fine though, different strokes for different folks.

I want the GTAO Double-Action Revolver in my inventory as it was supposed to be since Chapter 1, but knowing how Rockstar tickets go, I dunno if that'll get anywhere.

I'm a GTA player, and I gotta say I'm struggling with the controls in this game but I know for a fact that it's because of it being different and not bad, I'm starting to get the hang of it and I love it.

Also to the OP, yeah, it's just you.
