Red Dead Online Thoughts/Ideas/Concerns

LONG post. Read summary at bottom if you're impatient or dont read well.

As a huge fan of GTA Online, and someone who is looking forward to RDOnline, I have to admit that after playing the game I am a tad concerned about the logistics here.

Obviously many of the same general ideas can be applied to Red Dead Online, such as businesses, missions, etc. But I'm just wondering how it will compare when the weapon upgrades seem very limited, and there are only so many variations of horses and so on.

Do you think it will be primarily focused on missions? If so, what exactly will there be to spend money on, and to continue spending money on? Whereas the options in GTA were almost limitless, I'm still struggling to imagine where they will go with this.

TLDR:

What will there be to spend money on besides horses, properties/businesses, and a few guns?

Has anybody considered this and come up with any ideas?

Properties and Businesses and Camps, along with all sorts of upgrades is an obvious choice. Maybe even building a gang of sorts. But without tons of fun stuff to buy with all of this it will all be rather pointless.

Guns and upgrades for guns. But singleplayer has shown that there are very few useful upgrades available beyond cosmetics. Gatling guns I can see happening.

Horses are obvious but again these options are going to be very limited. I could see some sort of armored carriage for sure. MAYBE even a primitive car at some point.

Thoughts?

My thoughts is

Horse will eventually die and outlaws will be forced to work as a cattle farmers down in the south with a funky accent "ay yau daun't cawm herye again naw ya hear! Gawdamn boyy"

and extremly racists against muslims asian blacks and jews

I’m concerned that lassos and trains won’t be online again like RDR1. They didn’t exist. Also, there are so many features in RDR2 that I fear won’t make it to the online portion, but that happens with every game I guess. Crossing my fingers that Rockstar can revolutionize the online open world multiplayer experience by delivering everything the single player game has.

I hope a bounty system similar to SP makes it. AI Lawman and other players can come collect your bounty and bring you in. Could make for some good bounty hunter or lawmen crews too.

GTAO had trains running so I'd say there's a good chance we'll see them in RDRO, especially since they offer more gameplay than any R* game previously.

I'd love to see lassos online but they'll need a whole different set of rules for breaking out of them and cooldowns on repeated use to avoid becoming the troll's dream tool.

Trains should be.. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't.

The lasso though... they need a spam B(Or playstation equilavent) button to break free. That way somebody can't spend their life tied up on a horse

Even lassos just to be used agains NPCs would be good. In the first Red Dead Online, they couldn’t get the rope physics to work properly in online which is why we didn’t see the lasso or the ability to hitch your horse. Trains didn’t synchronize either so they were left out of Online. The location of the train was different for everyone.

Lassos NEED to be online this time. Even if they don’t work in PvP, bringing in bounty’s in Online would be fun fighting against other players over who brings the guy in.

I'm wary to see how it works Online... in the original Red Dead Online it meant you could peg somebody with a revolver from a mile away, I'm really hoping some more work went into balance this time around...

Dead Eye needs to be locked to NPC's in online or remove it completely. Lasso's need to stay, but either lock it to NPC's only or make it easy to break free.

Wait did they say that about the train not being in rdr1?? When?

I *really* hope the honor system closely carries over.  This, in my mind, would significantly discourage the kind of griefing GTA Online is notorious for encouraging.

I can’t remember where it was stated, it was years ago. But the train didn’t synchronize with every player properly (from what I remember reading).

I got a bad feeling about e free roam mode after what I saw i story mode.

Money might be a big part in the way the game punishes you but with a free to play twist. Like if you have a high bounty dying will not reset it back to zero and you will constantly have players and hostile NPCs coming (same cheating bull**** A.I from GTAO) to kill you until you grind enough money to pay it off, almost making the game unplayable to a point.

Horses could get destroyed and have their stats reset after a revive from the stable and you will have to pay a heavy fee ad the only way you can guarantee safety from griefers is to go into some sort of passive mode which also prohibits you from doing sand box activities, making the game miserable to play by design to push microtransactions..

I also have a strong feeling that they are going to horribly fail again with the avatar creator again like do something as equally pretentious and stupid and "innovate" a system where every single player start off with a bald buzz cut and would have to wait time to grow and stylize it or something and/or reuse that stupid parent system that is going to lead to clones again because everyone wants the same preset that does not result in looking like a no chin troll or an elderly person.. I think I saw the gumby shoulders in a online pre order bonus too.

I doubt it would discourage much aggressive behaviour. Plenty of people WANT to be dishonourable and will wear a negative rating with pride. Hell, I don't plan to be shooting everyone I come across but I'm not gonna be a boy scout either.

I'm hoping the Honor system will be something like the Mental State system from GTAO and warn you of what kind of player people are, but on a more permanent basis. It should take a lot more than a few missions or hours offline to erase negative karma.

I'm looking forward to online as i feel it will be more balanced than GTAO, we shouldn't (fingers crossed) see so many overpowered vehicles as they wouldn't fit the era of the game.  Also the map is huge or at least feels a lot bigger that LS, it could take 20 minutes or more for somebody to ride to your position if they want to attack you as opposed to a minute in a hydra or Op mkII and i can't see many people bothering.  The "large" city is not actually that large compared to LS and i imagine that the players will be more spread out on the map and not all congregating in one area as is frequently the case in GTA.

Really? Its already been noted that you can buy wagons with Gatling/Maxim Guns (Turrets) on the back, if we have a time jump to get past RDR1 and 2 we could see cars and bolting a gun to the back of one of these is not out of the question, gliders and planes could be possible and the excuse could be you are dropping dynamite and fire bottles from it and boom you have a bomber.

People have to realise that R* does not have a choice. Take2 wants a repeat of GTAO and for people to keep spending money on Buffalo Bonds they need to keep releasing content that makes previous content obsolete so you need to buy it to keep up. Eventually they will have to release absurd and over the top stuff.

I honestly don't mind guns eventually wearing out and needing replacement, as it makes finding or looting them all the more valuable.

Bottom line is that, with less historically-accurate content that can be added, other game play has to pick up where that leaves off.

But I can already see where weapons like the Maxim are going to be a bit of an issue; and you'd better believe that Rockstar's microtransaction system is (sooner or later) going to seriously erode game play.

...unless Rockstar has had a complete change of heart in regards to carefully guarding game play balance. But I suspect we all know the answer to that.

Unless it's an unintended bug, NPCs in Story Mode can actually escape from being hog tied--has happened a couple of times to at least one YT'r (XpertThief) (either Dat Saintsfan or Typical Gamer) while trying to mess around with them.

It typically happened when he got further away from them, or wasn't keeping them in view. He'd turn around, and they'd be running away. lol

Nailed it right here. Hot air balloons are already in-game, and flying machines only need Rockstar to put a "these won't crash" stamp of approval on them (unlike the ones in Story Mode).

I'm sure Rockstar has some even wilder ideas coming--the longer the game thrives (talking years here), the more, uh, "marketably attractive" content they're going to need.

Going off that as well, they could *cough* balance Cars Vs Horses and Wagons by making the cars slower than a fully galloping Horse. Make them more a fashion statement than actually the best items.

Stagecoaches will do everything a car can but faster but cars will be a MASSIVE draw for some people so its win win.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see a slew of pre/early World War I-era weaponry make its way into the game (as we already have with the Maxim gun and expensive pistol).

By setting the date to 1899, Rockstar have sneakily managed to drive a permanent 'foot in the door' to options for future content; whether or not it makes for plausible game play like Story Mode possesses.

I guess my main concern, if I didnt make it clear, is that to make online sustainable for years and years there needs to be a steady stream of new content. Properties and horses, and even guns arent gonna cut it. What's the point of buying businesses and grinding, and more importantly buying shark cards, if there isnt any interesting content to spend it on? And given the setting I personally have difficulty coming up with ideas for interesting content. At least in a long term sense anyway. There are only so many horses and weapons available in this time period.

Also, as pointed out, the LARGEST city in the game is like the size of one city block in GTAO. A large portion of the map is....well...nothing really. It doesnt really make for a good equivelant to Los Santos.

And don't get me wrong, I love RDR2. These are just concerns I have for how they will make the online mode even remotely like GTAO was.

I fear the travel time, as the horse is the fastest? There must be someway to speed up or shorten the travel time, shortcuts or whatever.

why???

Can't people just log onto GTAO for all that stuff?

If all this happens, it will no longer be Red Dead...

Do you honestly think that Take2 cares? They are the holding R* leash and R* will do as Master says. The head of Take2 has already been noted as saying that he thinks GTA Online was under-monetised and he wants to see Microtransactions in all future Take2 games to a wider and deeper degree.

Red Dead Online will follow the exact same format as GTA Online.

Microtransactions, sure.

Changing the game into something else... I don't know.

All of the over the top military stuff can be justified (loosely) in GTAO, I'm not sure that will work in RDO. First off the time frame doesn't allow for it, and there is also the fact that this game has a very different target audience.

I would expect MTs for clothing, horses, housing, camps, etc...

I would not expect to buy in game cash with real life money (like they do in GTAO) because if they do...say goodbye to blackjack and poker.

I just hope R* goes back to the original Co-op mission/heists model, where everyone is an equal, rather than the boss/lackey model that most of GTAO is now. In my experience that really degraded Co-op play because everyone wants to be the boss and ends up doing their own thing rather than working together.

I also hope that everyone's location is hidden. IMO that would make multiplayer much better if you could be stealthy and didn't have a blip showing everyone where you are 24/7.

I dont mean the OTT Military stuff. I mean the updates will get more outlandish as time goes on because that's how you keep people coming back. That's simple, you have Buffalo Bonds and Carried Money, MT's are deposited into Buffalo Bonds which can be used to buy items but not Gamble and cannot be converted to Carried Money and Carried Money can be used to buy items as well and Gamble and cannot be converted in Buffalo Bonds.

In short you cannot use Buffalo Bonds for gambling ever. Even if you had twenty million in BB's and the Poker buy in was one dollar.

That would work too....

Now get them to open the casino in GTAO and separate the money is a similar fashion!
