I am trying to do the cougar quest but so far the only one i have seen was in a quest involving a zoo of sorts.   This is despite the fact I have been wandering around the area NW of strawberry for an hour.   Coyotes, pigs, and random small game are all ive seen.   Ive tried attracting them with the bait the trapper sells but so far nada....what am i doing wrong?

I haven't seen them either. I'm beginning to think they are only in the game as part of scripted missions and scripted random encounters

Seen one. Near overlook. Was attacking a deer and made beeline for me. Haven't seen one since, but then I ain't looking.

I heard a few but still haven't seen any. They are definitely there like other regular animals they are just very sneaky and rare.

I have seen one and killed one near the starting camp in the burnt out tree area. It was attacking some random guy so guess i got lucky with a random event

I understand they want to make this game as realistic as possible. But why do they make these awesome predators, and do them so well but you never get to see them? There are rabbits, birds and deer everywhere, but you encounter a predator every 3 hour or so and it seems like it is from a scripted random event when it happens as well. I have seen some black bear in free roam, but they didn't attack me, only a grizzly bear attacked me once. I just feel they made it too realistic and took out the fun here, there is no presence of threat in the nature due to this which is a shame in my opinion.

I more or less agree. While rdr 1 was maybe a bit over the top with dangerous wildlife... rdr 2 has more a reversed problem.

So far I got attacked by wolves once in free roam. Bitten by 1 rattle and got hit down twice by wild boar.

I still have a lot more to play and discover but so far only the bayou seems dangerous with alligators everywhere. Love it!

I did see 1 black bear and several large packs of coyotes but they always run away.

Rockstar should look In to this.

Agree, something in between RDR 1 and RDR 2 would be perfect. Not saying it is a fact, some people may enjoy the ultra realistic nature of this game, and it does make each encounter more special due to it's rarity. But I do think most people would enjoy more activity and more threat in the form of predators, the world is far, far from empty but I think that is one of the reason some may think it is somewhat empty.

While I agree they should be a bit easier to find, I dont think Rockstar throwing them in everywhere is a good idea either.   Cougars in real life aren't the most visible animal and probably would spend great energy avoiding humans.  So in terms of realism its probably really dang close now and im not animal expert but I feel safe saying that most wild animals avoid people if they can.  I would like to roam the wilderness at times without stopping every 5 seconds to fight some wildlife...I am going to go try potent predator bait in the cougar area here in a little bit.  I will let yall know if it works.

I have seen far too many Cougars to the west, and to the north of Annesburg. All of them looking to use Arthur's ass as a scratching post.

I was up in the woods somewhere, rutting around and I hear this deep angry roar, then thudding footsteps.

I looked around, figured I'd bag me a bear, because I know one when I hear one, but all I saw was trees and eerie light coming through them and they all snarled at me.

Listen, I'm bad-ass, okay, but I high-tailed it outta there. I never saw a bear and I'm absolutely fine with this ultra-realistic wildlife system.

And to stay on topic: I'm also equally fine with not meeting any cougars.

That one side-mission (which I'm sure most of you have played by now) in the cave was tense enough for grampa.

West of Strawberry, just south of the Big Valley. Owenjila Lake. Found that area teaming with wildlife. Seen everything from bears, bucks, snakes, boars, big fish in the lake and a couple of cougers (couple legendary's in that region)

Haven't left them parts for a week now as there's also a trapper on the hillside.

Up brandywine way one came after me.   I have not heard that roar nearly as much as I used to.  It used to give me such a rush, much like the deep pant of a bear.

Heard the noises near overlook again, found out it was a random event where a stranger is on a tree and the cougar's trying to reach him.

A guy on horseback about 30 foot ahead of me on the trail shot something in the woods close by and when I investigated, it was a now dead cougar.  Didn't seem like an "event"

I don't usually flail and shoot like a spaz at shadows, but it appears even I have a breaking point.

Anyone looking for cougars that are having troubles finding them  DO NO listen to people in the forum there is no way they being truthful.   I have 12 hours, probably more, exploring the areas that are marked by cougars on the map and the ones suggested by these people on this post.  Tried all times of day, with and without a horse, with both types of baits, everything I can think of and I have not seen a single cougar, heard a cougar, or anything that would make me think one is nearby.

They are supposed to spawn down near blackwater which I am guessing opens up at the very end of the game.  If you go there before then it will instaspawn 15+ guys that shoot VERY accurately.  IF you make is past them it will spawn more until you are dead thus locking the area off to you.   I am currently in chapter 4 and my best guess is that cougars are not unlocked yet.

If any of you want to defend yourselves...offer proof...simply saying "I see them all the time" is complete BULL.

I've seen 3 up in the north east section of the map, on my way to kill the Legendary Moose and Legendary Steelhead Trout.

All three times were near the railroad tracks up there, in between an abandoned small railstation and the waterfalls. When you see one while riding the horse, the camera automatically locks onto the cougar as you ride past it. I assume to counter the complaints about cats jumping out of nowhere and killing you in RDR1.

I am early into Chapter 3, the strategy guide doesn't mention anything about chapter locked animals aside from a few and cougars aren't one of them.

If you guys like, the carcass should still be on the ground up there from the last one I killed, I can snap a pic of it in a few mins.

I think the legendary gator is chapter locked, from what I can see.

I have to admit this worked...I found 4 cougars (need 5)  What I did was walk the area Mach said to found a single cougar....then I would have to leave the area and run to Annesburg and sleep (I dont know how much this actually helps) run back and instantly find another cougar.   This worked 100% until I got 4 ( 1 short of what I needed) I am now 30 runs into this after my last cougar and nothing

final post for me on here unless yall have a question, but I finally found the 5th...and 6th cougars....   There is a sixth because I decided to save the game and reload it, then run back into the area.  Well, 10 feet north of Annesburg I was shooting at a bird to make another improved arrow and I get tackled and killed by a cougar...Lost the 2 perfect cougar pelts I had managed to get.   Oh well, shortly after that I found the last cougar and killed it
