I don't think any of the grizzlies is in Canada tho that'd be cool. If a separate country was in the game it would have been mentioned.

I think lemoyne is just Louisiana in it's entirety.

Canada is mentioned a few times though. There's a small dialogue of John going to the Yukon for gold and sometimes when going to the trapper's shop he will say he ran his post from here to the border, the northern border that is.

The trapper kind of sounds Canadian to me when he talks.

hmmmmm maybe around ontario. As somebody from western canada I haven't noticed any unique pronunciation among myself or my peers. I would think that if that's true then maybe he was from eastern Canada? Then again judging by his face and the fact the game is based in 1899 maybe they sounded different before then I suppose. Not sure what that accent is but it certainly sounds funny.

He is Canadian. Pearson mentions this when he first mentions the trapper.

my answer is going to be a bit different, i'm not disagreeing with what anyone says as who knows what states in real life the developers chose to base places from, as i've read and seen there are pictures to provide clear evidence of the similarities between in game towns/cities and real life ones. but regardless, here are some of my thoughts

New Austin; part of the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, maybe just a coincidence but a few things hint at this in my opinion other than the desert that is there, the Sea Of Coronado seems to me like its a reference, at least if not based off or a parody of the Gulf Of California, main reason I say its more likely a reference is that California is not actually the area of land touching it, its Mexico, which I'm pretty sure doesn't actually exist officially in game as part of official map(i know theirs mods and you can cross the river in places to get to Mexico, but unlike in the first rdr game, Mexico is clearly an area of the map you visit).

Speaking of crossing a river, pretty certain the San Luis River is a reference, parody and or based off the Rio Grande(the waterfall in game at the San Luis River would also possibly contradict this). Plus, and these could just be coincidental again but, New Austin, possibly because of Austin, Texas and Armadillo, which sounds a lot like Amarillo, another city in Texas. This is completely unrelated, but as I was checking Google Maps, to make sure I correctly spell the names of real places, i zoomed in on Texas and found out there's a town called Van Horn and Valentine, which I did not know about.

West Elizabeth, specifically the part between the upper and lower Montana River; Great Plains, not "the Great Plains", in case people missed it. In real life, the region of the USA here is huge and many maps for the rdr vs real life region say that this area mostly eastern Colorado in game, however personally I think it looks more like Nebraska and Kansas, though it may not be based off them.

Tall Trees; The denser forest in this area of the game does seem accurate to be west of Denver, Colorado, as there are several National FOrests in this region in real life.

Big Valley; the part of this i'm unsure of is the most giant thing here, Mount Shann, could simply be a semi-random mountain developers put here, but its the only thing that makes me unsure if this region is truly based on Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. As i'm sure many know, Wyoming is famous for Yellowstone, but perhaps they didn't want to include that in the game or at least not a reference to it here.

Ambarino; Grizzlies West, Snow defines this area in game so quite obviously its based off places that have plenty of snow and cold temperatures, home to Sadie Adler and her ranch, colter and home to Mt. Hagen, where you know(you get to kill a certain someone in the final mission of the epilogue) Most people say this is not any certain state in real life, just the rocky mountains and Canada, but states i'd say would be northern Idaho and Western edge of Montana, for what places are in the USA

Grizzlies East; still rugged, mountainous terrain. less defines this region than the other grizzlies, home to the indian reservation, cotorra springs(possibly only referenece to yellowstone, but probably still a stretch) and hamish, the veteran, i'm pretty sure this region is based off part of Eastern Oregon and Washington.

New Hanover; Cumberland Forest, consists mainly of forest and fort Wallace, the map of this region vs real life shows that this rather small region is based off Minnesota, Wisconsin and my home state of Michigan with both peninsulas, minus the lakes and tiny bit of north Indiana and Ohio. Unsure about the exact story of Fort Wallace's origin, if based on a real military base, but I would have to agree with what the map says.

The Heartlands; the real life great plains is the base idea for this region, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Both of the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and Montana. Mainly I disagree with  Arkansas and Montana here but other than that, seems fine. The Dakota River is probably a reference to both the Missouri and Mississippi River. The town of Valentine seems too generic for me to say specifically what state or city it could be based on.

Roanoke Ridge, Annesburg, Van Horn and Butcher Creek. First thing, Roanoke, Virginia feels like a direct hint to the area this region is based, most the Carolina's and Virginia's, as well as part of Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania , I saw pictures earlier about the place that most definitely inspired the town of Van Horn, but I'm pretty much puzzled about everything else and what inspired them.

Lemoyne; Scarlet Meadows, Rhodes and the Braithwaites. The feud between the families in chapter 3 is inspired by real life families, the area near Rhodes in game is like the deep south, mainly the states of Mississippi and Alabama, with bits of Tennessee and Georgia, seems very accurate. Many think all Lemoyne is just Louisiana, but certainly if all of it isn't, a large portion undeniably is.

Lastly, Bayou Nwa, The Grays and Saint Denis. Straight and simply Louisiana because Sant Denis is based off and a parody of New Orleans. Can't say much else besides, I wonder what Siska is all about.

I know this was a lot and don't honestly expect anything, but I thank anyone who took the time to read what I had to say

Saint Denis & Bayou Nwa = New Orleans, Louisana

Scarlett Meadows = Mississipi

The Heartlands = Real-life Great Plains states (Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Eastern Wyoming/Colorado, etc)

Roanoke Ridge = West Virginia/Kentucky/Carolinas

Cumberland Forest = not sure, maybe somewhere in the midwest. Wisconsin maybe?

West Ambarino = Rocky Mountains (so Colorado or Wyoming)

East Ambarino = Wyoming/South Dakota

West Elizabeth = Pretty stumped here. Somewhere west of the Mississippi and east of the Pacific is all I got.

New Austin = Real-life American Southwest (West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Southeast California). I think each region in New Austin roughly corresponds to one of these states

The thing about Red Dead is that the states are not really based on specific locations, like Liberty City is for New York or South San Andreas is for South California, obviously besides Saint Denis. The locations are far more generalized - Western New Hanover is the typical Great Plains State, Ambarino the Rocky Mountains state, New Austin the Wild West state, etc. Even ten years later people are still arguing about whether Blackwater is based off the real life town or somewhere else like Saint Louis.

Pretty sure that's incorrect.

I'm certain that all of Lemoyne is based on Louisiana.

I live in Louisiana, and know the state's history well.

It's identical.

The town of Rhodes is a real life location.

...as is Pleasance, Bayou Noir, The Pirate Ship, The Braithwaite/Gray families, and much more.

All of it ties back to a real life location or history from the state.

I'm sure many would disagree with me but In my opinion, Blackwater is either Dallas or Houston.

Possibly, even a combination of the two.

Thanks for the clarification, I have only flown to New Orleans so it was just guesswork on my part.

So whats the verdict on Roanoke Ridge? Quite an interesting region of the game for me as climate wise it seems to be fairly warm up there.

I would say the Ozark mountain ranges around missouri and Arkansas

so RDR and GTA are supposed to be in the same universe, but I did noticed that in one of the dialogues, Arthur asked Dutch where they were gonna hide, and one of the cities he mentioned was New York

they should have said LC, right?

I've never heard they're in the same universe, they're both in their own separate universes. GTA V's map of San Andreas is basically California and GTA maps are pretty much always on an island whereas RDR has edges of the map that are land.

saying "the made up state of San Andreas is a giant island" doesn't make them seperate universes

In some interview around the release of Vice City I think, the Housers said something about all GTA locations existing alongside their real ones. Like, Vice City and Miami exist at the same time.
I get the feeling their internal stance on it is “it doesn’t matter, don’t worry about it.”

they also said the old universes and the new HD universe of 4 and 5 aren't the same ones

which explains Grove Street or San Andreas being reduced to one major city

just imagine if they just made Vice City 2 instead, and moved on to remaking San Andreas in all it's glory now

no its not. because hercule fontaine is from haiti. and he even mentions how he is not from guarma. so its definitely not haiti.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Guarma is indeed part of Cuba, being the second island east of it, it would either be part of Bahamas, Cuba or Haiti, but considering the cuban army led by Alberto Fussar occupies the entire island then it probably makes it part of Cuba or at least owned by its government to some extent, a sort of cuban colony to make things easier.

TexasOdysseus

I can't believe I hadn't mentioned this before, but Pike's Basin--as well as some of the Mexico vistas in Nuevo Paradiso--could very much be patterned after certain places in Utah, notably Dead Horse Point State Park.
