It all depends on the bounty, i got in a fight with an o'driscoll in valentine and when the sheriff came He told me to leave town. I had a robbery bounty for 20 bucks and got locked up. Sheriffs arrest you when they see you in town, if you have a high enough bounty that bounty hunters come after you, they won't try to take you alive. Original Light Posted November 7, 2018 Share Posted November 7, 2018 (edited) You can surrender to a lawman by being unarmed, locking onto them with the interaction button, and hitting Triangle (PS4) or Y (Xbox) to Surrender. From what I've observed, it's easiest to do when you already have a bounty, and you start antagonizing the sheriff. They will then hold you at gunpoint, and you can then surrender. Ahh so that's why I wasn't cornered. Here I was strolling into Valentine with a $1000+ bounty on my head, made my way to the Sheriff's office and had chit chat with him, the prisoners then played some poker. Nobody came to get me though (I don't think I had a high enough bounty on me). You can only surrender before any shots are fired against the law. I just spent the night in jail, then was released.
