Poker is once again hypnotic

Actually I think it's even more hypnotic in this game than it was in RDR.  The animations are superb and the conversation has a real flow to it now, it doesn't feel as much like just a collection of random phrases.  I played against the two guys in the mission with the drunk priest (basically the introduction to poker) and really enjoyed the very different personalities of the AI players - both of them were bad, but in completely different and somewhat realistic ways.  One is a total donk, betting constantly regardless of his hand, and the other is a calling station who calls everything and never bets or raises even when he has the nuts.  Once I got used to it, it was quite easy to relieve both of them of their money.  Looking forward to finding some higher-stakes games later on - I assume there's a good one in St. Denis somewhere...

I wish you can play with more than a dollar.

For real, I want to play some high stakes games.  Hopefully there are bigger betting pools in the big cities than these little podunk games in camp and elsewhere in the Heartlands.

Cutter De Blanc

I played against Uncle, Lenny, and Strauss. Absolutely captivating, I had to stop or I would have spent all day playing against various members of the camp

Uncle is a damn fool and plays poker like a damn fool

All the NPCs are terrible that I have played so far. They never fold their starting hands no matter what. They will bitch if you do it often. I spent 4 or 5 hours in the Valentine bar and took all the cash from several NPCs.

However, Texas Holdem didn't even exist at the time. We should be playing 5 card draw.

5 card draw would be more probably accurate, but hold 'em dates to at least the early 1900s and there's a good chance people were playing it earlier than that.  (The official story on these things is often just "here's our best guess.")  Anyway, I'm fine with them fudging it a bit because hold 'em is a much better game than 5-card draw.

I'm on chapter 4 and the highest stakes I've found was $5 buy in in St. Denis. It's definitely very enjoyable but yeah don't expect to make a fortune doing it as it takes time. NPC's are very predictable. Best advice I can give you is that they do not bluff but at the same time they will call you all the way down with a pair of 2's. Thats technically not bluffing as they have "something" but any actual person would know that a pair of deuces are useless. It's a great way to make some easy money while smokin a bowl

I love it, too. But as @Cutter De Blanc mentioned, you sort of have to restrain yourself. I could easily sit for hours just playing poker. Like I said, I love it.

Tonight I'm going to try and begin with a couple of the Master Hunter/Herbalist/Survivalist challenges..

No, actually it's pretty clear. Texas holdem was invented in the 1960s. I studied the game for about a decade.

Well, maybe not... i don't really know. It's impossible to know.

I love the game too.

According to Wikipedia it was popularized by Las Vegas in the 60s, but is formally acknowledged by the state of Texas as having been invented in the early 1900s in Robstown, TX. Of course even that could be spurious or based on just one account. Oftentimes these stories are dreamed up after something takes off in popularity, maybe just because somebody was trying to claim credit. Try looking up who invented various popular foods (like the Philly cheesesteak, the deep dish pizza, or pizza in general) and you'll see what I mean. There are often competing stories and little proof of anything, because the real inventors weren't documenting their invention when it happened.

The interesting thing about the Robstown story is that I can't even find a formal version of it online. There's no Joe Holdem or anything. ;) It's just one of those "according to legend" tales.

Actually a dollar in 1899 was a pretty high bet. Accounting for inflation that would be $32 present day. And these are not rich dudes. That's a pretty big bet. People made about 25 cents an hour tops in wages. Most games where actually probably penny nickel dime with a  quarter limit I would think. If you had $20 that would easily support you for  a month..

I wanna progress in the game to where I can wear my fancy City Poker Shark suit and run tables at $500, so I can make (or lose) some real money.  😛

Also I like how they raise when you raise & call your bluff (All in) instead of Spook fold.

The ambience trully is on point when you're sitting at the Table.

If you want true immersion in the game . The value of money is something you need to realize. In 1899 you could buy the best Steak DInner available for a dollar. You could have a call girl for a dollar.

Does anyone know if there is a way to cheat, like with the elegant suit in the first game?

Ive been taking the game super slow doing a lot of free roam and only just unlocked poker last night.

Yep, I'm loving the poker too right now. Awesome to play in 1st person view and a massive improvement on RDR1.

Hoping to share a few hands with Herbert Moon if he's in the game in Armadillo when I eventually get there. Might take a while tho as I'm taking my time with this masterpiece....

Lonely-Martin

Yeah, this is one thing I've no doubt about...

I'll nod off late night one night, wake up at 3am and think 'I'll just play this hand and save it up' only to win and squeeze another half hour in, lol.

Guaranteed.

Not really a poker man. But you will see me at the Blackjack table 😉

Hopefully get some games in RDR online

If you disable all the game's HUD, does it kill all the HUD while playing poker too? I'd prefer to learn what buttons do what rather than have them on the screen the whole time.

Played 4 hours of RDR2 yesterday... 3 of them were poker.  😁

It sux that a day in game is like 38 minutes (faster than GTA 5).

It's my biggest gripe with both games.

I would rather have in-game time match real life time.

You played poker for 3 hours? That's almost 6 days straight!!!!

Is it just me, or is Lenny either mf'ing lucky, or just a real badass player? Seems to be the only player in camp able to beat me.

I find the npcs are prettt good even head to head but when they’re short stack they make stupid decisions with bets.

Lenny is a piece of sh*t.

Folds 9/10 times, and has a Royal Flush when he does play a hand.
