RDR2 $725 Million in 3 Days

Imo they took a very long time to bring out a game, so I was expecting it to be good anyway. I wonder how their strategy compares against someone like Ubisoft who bring out games every year targeting smaller audiences but receiving a small flow of income every year.

Not surprised. Both RDR's are best videogame storytelling i ever saw.

Algonquin Assassin

Well deserved. I was losing faith in R* with how GTA V turned out, but they got back on the saddle (no pun intended) with this masterpiece.👍

Just started chapter 6. In all my years of playing video games I didn't think I could be blown away by anything any more, but wow. This game is the best R* has ever done. In terms of story, gameplay, visuals, everything. This game is a masterpiece and more then deserves every penny.

This game has left GTA V feeling so bland and lifeless in comparison to me. The variety of things to do and attributes to work on takes me back to the feeling of when San Andreas came out. The employees and devs on this game deserve a hefty bonus for Christmas time and I'm happy to see it breaking records. Well deserved.

I mean, they kind of aren't.

If Westerns were a very popular video-game genre, then Red Dead wouldn't have been the only Western franchise out there. Other Western games that critically did well (above a 7-8) never did commercially too well.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is successful because Rockstar went above and beyond what was expected with RDR2. Many people are playing RDR2 not because it's a Western in itself, but because it's a revolutionary open world game that happens to be a Western.

People who like Westerns should be happy that the only established Western franchise is also a revolutionary franchise. RDR1 was one of the most critically acclaimed games of its console generation with many publications considering it to among the best video games ever game and RDR2 is not only critically acclaimed it's also considered revolutionary.

Dude, it made 725 million dollars in three days. Are you seriously trying to make 725 million dollars sound like not a big deal because it didn't sell well as GTA V (Not surprised) and it's not number 1 in the charts of one country?

Not at all. But put it into context and see between the lines.

Would be interesting how the console sales went up in that time, too tbh. I know 8 people who bought a NG console just for RDR2 - previously all PC player (5x xbox vs 3x PS).

OT: Deserved - now they're allowed to ruin the SP-game for online /s

It's nice to see a game about the American old west do so well. It's pretty niche at this point, but the simpler times seem to be universally appreciated. Then again it's a well made R* game, so I'm sure many would buy and play it regardless of setting.

Anybody else love to see Agent revived with the level of cinematic detail that RDR2 got? Imagine a complex spy yarn set across Europe... could be pretty sweet I bet.

That whole section exasperated me in the most impressive way possible. I was about to go to bed when I got there and I couldn't stop. I had to see what was going to happen at the expense of sleep.

Huh, you gotta try real hard to only see the "bad" things in this numbers.

In your comparison, you only forgot to point it out that GTA V was the seventh (fifteenth overall) installment of the biggest, well established, franchise, in one of the most popular genres, whereas Red Dead it's only the third game in a not yet established and not so popular franchise, in a dead genre.

Not sure how far a cowboy game can go to establish itself further. What can you add to a cowboy game? You can clearly see Rockstar struggled adding content to Red Dead 2. What else could they add in a 3rd game? They tried to pack it out with as much as they could so people didn't claim it had about as much content as the first one. You can only take such a thing so far. This is why they focused heavily on pushing the attention to detail when promoting the game.  Still a success regardless.  However, the figures are very telling if you read between the lines and think about where Rockstar is as a company at the present time.

I was a little scared because of how much they focus on online in V but I told people on here that RDR2 would not be tailored to the V crowd and I was right. I predicted correctly how this game would turn out.

No matter how you paint it, RDR2 is a massive success.

I know it is. I never said it wasn't.  Just not as big as it probably would have been. But so many people boycotting Rockstar over numerous things. Over GTAV Online. Removing mod tools from PC (PC players review bombed GTAV so much it knocked GTAV's score right down on steam a significant amount)  So many other reasons people are angry at Rockstar right now.  But yes, still a success.

Head of Take Two has already said Red Dead 2 will feature a ton of microtransactions on online. When microtransactions are involved, grinding is also involved. They go hand in hand. You grind your life away playing the game of buy microtransactions. Therefore, Red Dead 2 will be very much like GTAV Online.  Rockstar's games seem to have 2 separate portions right now. A campaign and an online mode. GTAV and Red Dead 2 are no different in that sense.

I know RDR2 online most likely will but at least this time they still gave us a great SP experience. Take two will get their money but I can still see the passion that Rockstar put into this game.

The game is not only huge but it hasn't been out a week. Even people who are plowing through the story are still not done with it. The trophy numbers mean nothing at the moment.

Story completion numbers in big open world RPG's are always on the low side anyway, just looking at my trophy list for RPG's that have been out for years, Witcher 3 is at 30%, Dragon Age Inquisition at 22%, Fallout 4 26%. GTA V's on PS4 is 17%.

One look at this forum and other forums will tell you that a lot of people are sticking in chapter 2 and 3 while doing side stuff and exploring.

You're making something out of nothing with this at the moment.

Got it day one and I am still on chapter 2, just because I have been exploring mostly and don't want to rush through the game. There is a ton to do and it all takes up time into the story, gambling, hunting, side missions. It hasn't even been out a week yet you expect a ton of people to have finished it already?

It's not just a little side stuff. I nearly been freeroaming since I reached the point the gang sets up camp near Valentine. There's so much stuff to explore. A ridiculous amount of stuff. Rockstar has really outdone themselves. Loving this game.

And a lot of people will take the game really slow and discover everything in the world in parallel with completing the story.

I'm one of them - been playing it every chance I get since release and I'm still in the middle of Chapter 2. At my current pace, I think it'll still be another week before I move onto Chapter 3. Depending on work and family commitments, I reckon it will be January/February at a minimum before I've finished the story. Look around these forums and you'll read about tons of players who are doing the same thing.

Come back at the end of 2018 and look at completion percentages and that will a reasonable indications of how people enjoyed the game. But before then, it's meaningless.

Almost nobody is playing it. Are you serious. The game just came out what would you expect. Iam only is Chapter 2 myself. Just because you play game all day and all night other people have lifes to live.

I bought a PS4 especially for RDR2, previously being a PS3 player. Had i had better paying jobs, I would have bought a new tv as well, but it looks fine on my old one, so can't justify it.

Just to clarify: GTA V released on a Tuesday, so it's three days were all week days. RDR2 was on a Friday.

RDR2 has the biggest weekend launch of all time, GTA V has the outright biggest launch, so Rockstar hold both those records now.

Hugely impressive, a mother f*cking western has just smashed everything.

Also less people have PS4s/XBOX ONEs than people had PS3s/XBOX 360s back in the day.

Rockstar f*cking nailed it, the game is f*cking amazing. Didn't expect them to overkill it this hard, especially with how they left GTA V SP behind. Maybe they're aware the GTA O fad is dying out?

RDR is a different series.

Also just because some perceived them as "lacking" in the story department for V doesnt mean it will automatically happen in another game.

1 instance does not indicate a pattern. Especially with R*.

I hope the sales don't go down with the mixed reaction this game is getting.

The game doesn't really have mixed reactions. Generally, everyone's reaction is overwhelmingly positive.

The losers that are flooding Metacritic with stupid reviews are a tiny percentage.

Talking 50 people out of 8 million.

It is a better reaction than IV outside of this forum but there is still plenty of criticism. I love it but it is polarizing.
