Jason
Just to clarify: GTA V released on a Tuesday, so it's three days were all week days. RDR2 was on a Friday. RDR2 has the biggest weekend launch of all time, GTA V has the outright biggest launch, so Rockstar hold both those records now. Hugely impressive, a mother f*cking western has just smashed everything. White Shark
Awesome stuff. I've never ever been into westerns myself. Never played the first Red Dead or Gun, etc. Honestly, I was in two minds on whether to get RDR2 but in the end I wanted a change of pace from GTA Online. Am I glad I did! Rockstar could make any premise to anyone a big seller! R3CON, Rafae, Lonely-Martin and 3 others

TheExclusiveMan
Honestly at this point rockstar could make a game about a guy who washes windows for a living and the whole game reflects that and it will sell well, they are on a whole other level saintsrow

The last few last gen Call of Duty's did some huge numbers, Black Ops 2 did 500m and 7.5m sold in the first 24 hours and 1 billion in 15 days. Ghosts shipped 1 billion worth of copies in 24 hours but sales were down on Black Ops 2. Bethesda did a similar thing with Fallout 4, claiming it shipped 750m worth of copies in 24 hours. Shipped meaning shipped to retailers, but not sold to consumers. Rockstar have always reported sales to consumers. More recently, Black Ops 4 did 500m in sales in 3 days. Last years CoD:WWII, did similar numbers I think. That took 47 days to hit a billion in sales. saintsrow
SneakyDeaky
With this being a western, a dead genre, those numbers are hugely impressive. GTA will always be Rockstar's bread and butter but you can rest assured Rockstar now have another extremely successful series. RDR 3 will happen within the next 10 years without a doubt, and RDR Online is going to be big over the next few years. I think the beta will be the tip of the iceberg, I expect major updates in the future. morx555

Ice_cold2016
It didn't even make no 1 in the UK sales chart. (UK being the 2cnd biggest market) FIFA 19 is still number 1. When GTAV released is took 89% of the market share. Red Dead 2 has taken just 60% of the market share. So 40% are still buying other games over Red Dead 2. Only 11% were buying other games over GTAV. And 68% of sales are on PS4 btw. Edited October 30, 2018 by Ice_cold2016

Huh, you gotta try real hard to only see the "bad" things in this numbers. In your comparison, you only forgot to point it out that GTA V was the seventh (fifteenth overall) installment of the biggest, well established, franchise, in one of the most popular genres, whereas Red Dead it's only the third game in a not yet established and not so popular franchise, in a dead genre. If Westerns were a very popular video-game genre, then Red Dead wouldn't have been the only Western franchise out there. Other Western games that critically did well (above a 7-8) never did commercially too well. Red Dead Redemption 2 is successful because Rockstar went above and beyond what was expected with RDR2. Many people are playing RDR2 not because it's a Western in itself, but because it's a revolutionary open world game that happens to be a Western. People who like Westerns should be happy that the only established Western franchise is also a revolutionary franchise. RDR1 was one of the most critically acclaimed games of its console generation with many publications considering it to among the best video games ever game and RDR2 is not only critically acclaimed it's also considered revolutionary. 5 hours ago, Ice_cold2016 said: It didn't even make no 1 in the UK sales chart. Are you seriously trying to make 725 million dollars sound like not a big deal because it didn't sell well as GTA V (Not surprised) and it's not number 1 in the charts of one country? CryptReaperDorian
If something is a "dead genre," then it's definitely worth reviving. Look at Battlefield 1. Around that time, World War shooters were being produced in pretty low numbers, and World War 1 specifically was virtually untouched in the realms of the AAA gaming market. Yet, Battlefield 1 ended up being a colossal success for the franchise (in terms of sales). Doing the same, old thing will usually result in reduced sales at some point (definitely for annualized titles anyways).
