Smokewood
I love this game! I have spent all weekend just hunting and playing poker. I'm still in chapter 2 and have barely touched the story line. The Algerian, AUScowboy, _SMOKEY_ and 5 others
AUScowboy
Same for me but with canoeing and fishing. It is such a beautiful change in pace from GTA, but at the same time, makes me extremely excited for what VI will be and look like on this generation's hardware.. Yes, this is an amazing game. That kind of game that makes you want to go out and experience more stuff in real life. The first RDR had the same effect on me when it came out too. RDR2 is the most alive, authentic open world I've ever seen. _SMOKEY_, Sonny_Black, ALifeOfMisery and 7 others

HockeyMike24
Part of me wants to avoid the story as long as I can, another part of me wants to do the story until I unlock all of West Elizabeth. Smokewood

DarksunDaFirst
That is kind of the beauty of Rockstar games and their immersion factor. They take this middle of the road approach that they have these "survival" aspects to their game, but they're not really required. You don't have to eat and drink or maintain your horse or weapons...you only suffer minor penalties (which if you're really good, won't affect you in any significant way). You can play the story to complete it and not do anything remotely "Immersion" driven...just playing the game for the sake of playing. On the other hand, you could RP yourself into a full blown survival aspect and focus on just living in the world. It's not for everybody looking for a hard experience in one extreme or the other, but it fulfills both the need for immersion and the need for just a "digital shooting gallery". Smokewood
Well, I try to do the story but as I am riding around I am like: Oh a turkey! Track it down and kill it. Start riding again.. Like much of the rest of the game, it starts slow. The game takes its time introducing you to the gang, its way of life and involving you in its day-to-day capers. I wouldn't know personally, because like many people on this thread I've been playing all weekend and still haven't finished Chapter 2, but from reviews and reports it seems like the story narrative gathers speed significantly in later chapters. But because of the slow start, giving you all this time to interact with the gang before the plot kicks in, it should make it all that much more emotional when things inevitably (I assume) go to hell in later chapters...... It's an incredibly patient form of storytelling that I'm really pleasantly surprised that Rockstar still feel they can follow. Brave too, because I imagine a lot of instant gratification players aren't going to get far into it before they give up. 15 minutes ago, Smokewood said: Well, I try to do the story but as I am riding around I am like: Oh a turkey! Once that's available, I may never be able to walk past another pond or stream again! Dr.Rosenthal
Finished Chapter 2 last night. I definitely agree with you guys - I've waited so long for this, I don't want to rush it. I love the hunting (and fishing), just like I did with RDR. I have zero interest in getting on GTAO right now, even though (of course) I still love that game and I'll return to GTAO eventually, and will probably cycle between that and RDO. There's just so much to explore in RDR2 right now and I can't get enough of it! The story is very interesting this far, too. And the combat mechanics and chance encounters... ouggghhh mah gaaaawd it's so good. Waldbear
AUScowboy
If the mainstream game sites gave it 11/10 I couldn't get mad at them. For every minor hang up or gameplay issue (there are few IMO), there are ten things that are so amazing and brilliant that they quickly make up for even the more serious gripes. Algonquin Assassin
As much as I loved Red Dead Redemption I finished the story in roughly the same amount of time I've been playing this game for which is about 26 hours or so. The story's great and I just broke into chapter 3, but it's tempting to get sidetracked. When there's homesteads to rob, fish to catch, people to shoot in the face with a shotgun and watch their heads explode, strangers around.... the temptation is just too damn high. Tonesta
Yeah, as I feared the distractions are only getting worse! I'm falling into a pattern of playing for a couple of hours each day - and in that time, I'm only ever doing one story mission. 30+ hours in, and I'm only one mission into Chapter 3. It's not as if I'm rapidly completing the challenges or the collectables either - my completion of those is not even keeping pace with the story progression! I rode over to West Elizabeth yesterday with a goal of doing a story mission over there - and instead spent an hour hunting, searching for plants, and climbing Mount Shann from the difficult side. No particular reason - it was foggy so there wasn't even much of a view from the top - just because it was there!
Lonely-Martin
Yeah, I do like the freedom to go our way more in these games. This one particularly had just so many little optional extras it's awesome. Really is a modern day San Andreas for me. Edited November 6, 2018 by Lonely-Martin Autospell fail!
