Algonquin Assassin
I have to admit the thought of horse permadeath is a worry, but it makes things feel more real. I have a very close bond with mine (I decided on Whiskey for his name). He's the first horse you get. Even though I'm still at the beginning we've already had some crazy adventures. I hope he makes it to the end of the game. I would actually shed a tear if he died lol as pathetic as that sounds. R* really know how to create bonds with with our 4 legged friends. Haha365
I was pretty close, until we fell down a hill. My health took quite a hit but, well, he wasn't going to make it. It was towards the beginning and we were in the middle of nowhere, with no revival kit. I didn't let him suffer. I'm now carrying two kit's and on the second level with my new horse, Speedy. TexasOdysseus
The bonding process doesn't seem to take too long, and I will mash L3 quite a bit. I don't feed it much, but doesn't seem to matter or affect the horse cores much. Not bonding that's my problem, it's killing my dang horses... SeniorDerp
I loved my first horse, ended up getting ran over while stealing Stages. I carried around my saddle for probably 10min just being sad lol My current (2nd) horse is a draft horse I stole off a carriage in St. Denis, no where near a fast horse but can take bullet and survive a good fall. It’s become my favorite one
DarkDeciever
I didn’t realise how close I was until we went for a few days hunting in the grizzlies today. We kept falling down hills and the noises and movements Shadow made were terrible! I started leading him around dodgy passes after that! Didn’t realise I would be able to get attached! CrimsonFolo
Giving your horse a name and permadeath actually gives you a reason to care about the horse rather than regarding it as just a horse lol. First horse died on like the first day i played sadly but I don't want my second horse to die. Algonquin Assassin
Vanzant
I thought my first horse was Female, because of the Beige color. Named Her Annabel...then I saw it had huge nuts, so changed the name to Kentucky. We've gotten along much better after the name change. They did a phenomenal job with the animation, sounds and behavior..horses feel real. Edited October 30, 2018 by anthony

It's like the old west equivalent of having a modded car in a GTA game and you're worried you're going to lose it lol. GN 92
Is there a way to check the % of how close we are to our horses? I haven't had time to check this out yet.
Gallows
My first race horse got nicked by the train, stumbled and was stuck between a fence and the train, getting torn to pieces. I could not revive her. Having the Ultimate edition, I could just get a new one, but still a shocking experience. I really love the horse permadeath. I take care of my horse and do not expose her to unnecessary risk.

I'm not 100% sure but I've seen an option in the start menu where you click on player and there is a tab for horse. So I would assume that you can probably check that out to see horse bond. Not 100% sure tho. GN 92
Rykjeklut
I've got 3. 100% on all of them. Had to revive one of them 3 times yesterday while doing some exploring in the Grizzlies. Good horses, but not quite Skyrim-level.
