How to stay on my horse when using the lasso on another horse?

I've only been able to stay on my horse one time when I lasso'd another horse trying to steal it. Any other time I immediately hop off my horse. I don't know what I did different and I know I can lasso an npc and drag them all over. Anyone know how to do this?
