An open letter to Rockstar: please slow down the fast in game clock and please patch the day, night and weather transitions!

Just had a really cool bug. I aborted a mission and started free roaming. I decided to go hunting and I noticed dusk was still holding. Thing is the clock is stuck at 8.23pm and so is the lighting. Therefore I was able to hunt near a pond for half an hour with end of day lightning, it was really immersive for once!

Yeah I agree with this. The sky goes from an orange glow to dark blue in a second and in cutscenes it’s even more jarring.

Not only that, the moon does extremely strange things. I swear I watched the moon fly across the sky as an UFO and the sky turn from purple to white in a second. Was it intended this way? They need to fix this fast clock, its really ruining the immersive world they built. Does anyone have any idea how a talented developer like Rockstar could gloss over something as important as the day night cycle and weather and lighting? They were both great in RDR 1 and GTA V, why did they mess it up this time?

I agree so much, nice one for starting this thread Merle Travis. My biggest concern about this game before release was the annoyingly fast timescale but with all the build up about immersion, slow pace and beauty of this world I was optimistic that it might have improved but it's worse than I ever thought it would be!! It ruins so many aspects of the game as most of you guys have already pointed out. It puts me off the little amazing details such as mini games, reading newspapers, crafting because I don't like feeling like it takes a full day to do these things! I played Dominos with Hosea for the first time in camp but was quickly put off by how quickly it got dark and did not want to waste a full day!

A lot of people might think this is not so important but for a game that so far (I'm only at Chapter 3 at the moment) for me is a masterpiece and on course to be my favorite game of all time it's such a shame. I think all of those who do have an issue with the fast timescale will also be the ones who appreciate those small immersion building details the most. I do get the point about making the world seem larger but it's at the point where you feel like you have to rush everything which feels out of place in this amazing game. Many times when watching these amazing cutscenes (I have never enjoyed cutscenes so much in a video game) I am thinking how fitting the scene is at night time but then when your half way through the mission its midday.

Even if we had the option to keep at night, day, morning, sunset for a bit that would have been something. I hope they at least take note of this for future games. I still love this game so much but this is my biggest disappointment without a doubt.

Very well put ViceCity09! I agree wholeheartedly. RDR 2 would be on my list for best game of all time if it weren't for the fast clock completely throwing off the pace of the game and bugging out the weather and lighting system. It just doesn't let the game breathe and be the masterpiece it clearly is intended to be.

But at this point I think its very important we all understand something: if we are to have some actual chance of reaching Rockstar with these concerns we need to take them further and outside of GTAForums. Let's write them directly on their support page. Let's write them on Rockstars Twitter page. Maybe even try to dig up some Reddit or email accounts of Rockstar employees and send them messages or any other social media or discussion forum where they would take notice (just remember to be nice about it). GTAForums is a great place for discussion and voicing opinions on this game but we can't be sure that Rockstar actually pay any attention to what we are saying here. We need to take it further.

So lets contact them through the various channels available and make our voices heard, and lets keep this thread going!

SPOILER ABOUT JAVIER'S FIRST MISSION

Spoiler

i noticed this happened to me after i rescued sean and when i got near camp time froze i think at the exact time you mentioned because the game is waiting for you to go into camp where his welcome home party will happen and it needs to be night so im pretty sure you had done the first Javier mission just prior

To clarify, I wasn't trying to suggest that the world goes on when you're not in view. I understand that things and people only spawn once you get "close". I know that the game could theoretically be modded. What I am saying though is that Rockstar will not do it, because doing so will almost certainly break the game (maybe not from every individual player's perspective, but certainly from their perspective).

Also worth noting is that NPC behavior in this game differs a fair bit from prior Rockstar games. Since the NPCs here are much more life-like and realistic in their behaviors, it makes it a lot harder to "mod" them and have things still be ok ... as opposed to a typical GTA game where your average NPC is literally just standing or driving around aimlessly.

no need to clarify, i started my post by saying you are right, for example, hosea's first mission he claims it will take a day or two to get to the bear and you have to camp out after hunting the rabbits, so that mission would be screwed up and require it's code to be edited to fit a longer day, like hosea's mission might need to go farther or it would need to start later. so i dont think it has to do with random peds doing ambient type scripts like some guy working with lumber but rather it screws up routes you need to take in missions and rockstar doesnt want you to ride your horse up into the mountains and back down to your camp in a single day... so not scripted peds but rather the entire game would need to be updated especially the size of the map and where you go in missions, it is a huge update to edit the length of day... ive modded IV and V for years... i cant think of a single scripted event a ped would do that would get interrupted by a longer day since the activity they are doing is set to happen at within a certain timeframe of the day like day or night and the scripted event happens in real time and lasts like 10-30 seconds so they are tiny events that happen in real time but gta world time is sped up... so in real life you can shoot a basketball into a hoop ten time in one minute but in gta you can shoot the basketball barely once in one minute, the length of day feels the same to you as it would a ped... i know that might be too deep to understand lol

gta time is only sped up for the day night cycle but peds do everything in real time or else peds actions would be sped up... anyways this is all obvious im just sayin

Great points in this thread, but I seriously doubt Rockstar cares. When has any developer changed a huge thing like how the time works in a game?

Hmmm nice bike

Not gonna lie, this is something I noticed yesterday and do find a little annoying. You could literally see the moon moving in the sky like if it was flying. Plus, given the slower-paced nature of the game, time moving at a slower rate would make more sense. I noticed this when I went back to the snowy section of the game, and though the nighttime in that area is astoundingly beautiful, I kind of wish it just lasted a little longer.

I agree with you that there is a potential issue of not wanting the player to be able to travel "cross-country" in a single day. I hadn't really considered that before but you're right. For me personally though I wouldn't really care about it much. Anytime we play a video game we need to suspend disbelief in various ways in order to allow ourselves to be more immersed in the game. Depending on the person, it's easier to make one concession over another. For me it would be easier to accept that the day hasn't changed during a "cross-country" voyage ... than to watch it change from afternoon to full-on night in about 15 seconds. All that is to say that I wouldn't care ... not that it doesn't matter. It does matter and that certainly seems to be yet another reason why Rockstar would not make a change in the day/night cycle.

Maybe they could at least make it be the full 48 minutes, because right now it seems to be speeding up when it feels like it. At the very least they should patch the sunsets and the moon phase to be actually slower so they can be enjoyed, right now its pretty ridiculous to observe both of them they fly across the sky, especially the moon is very weird.

So I'd say maybe at least stop fast forwarding time and let the 48 minute clock play out when you are out in the wild...that way it could feel like RDR 1 at least, with proper time for sun and moon. You know I never even noticed the sun or moon move in RDR 1, just like real life, just like it should be. In RDR 2 its the complete opposite, you literally start looking at it because its moving so damn fast it looks ridiculous, moving like a goddamn race car in the sky😂

Haha I hadn't actually noticed the sun or moon move yet. Though I have certainly noticed shadows moving ... and yeah ... that looks super damn weird. I agree about the sunsets. Even if they kept the same length cycle but just elongated the sunsets -- even slightly -- just so the transitions weren't so damn jarring!

I absolutely would love to slow down the game.  Like 5-10x the amount.  I agree 110% with everything the OP said.  Longer sunrises and sunsets.... and longer day/night cycles.  A rainstorm should last for 1-2 days in RDR2 and those 1-2 days should last HOURS.  So a rainstorm in game for 2 days... should last 4 hours in the real world.   You can slug it out for 4 real hours in the rain... or drop a campsite and sleep for a large portion of that time.... It would make you appreciate the sunny days A LOT more.

My personal opinion...
24 hours in game = 2 hours real world time.
12 hour night time = 1 hour real world time.

So when you "sleep" in game for 9 (game) hours... that's essentially skipping forward the clock 45 minutes (real world time).  This would allow for slower weather patterns, slower sunsets/sunrises and make "sleeping" in game seem more important.

Yeah that would be pretty much perfect. IMO it would make the game feel way more immersive (than what it already is).

I had it rain for 4 days straight earlier. I tried sleeping thru it but no matter what it stayed raining. This may have been intentional and the system working as intended, but it seemed buggy the way it happened.

Then, as I was returning from a hunt, I literally created the top of a hill and the screen got all bright. At first I thought it was a lightning strike, then I realized that the game had IMMEDIATELY changed to a bright sunny afternoon. That part was definitely not intentional lol. It was really strange it went from pouring, then bang it was bright and sunny in literally a split second.

48 minutes is enough. It gets boring if it's longer. BUT they should slow it down during shopping and shows.

Both of these happened to me, too. I had nonstop rain for several in-game days and I was worried that the weather system was glitched in my game. And while hunting, the weather changed from dark grey skies and pouring rain to sunny in a matter of a few seconds while I was looking through the scope of a rifle. I'm pretty sure both are glitches.

The evenings are a shame really. The lighting is spot on but we only get to see it not even longer than a minute. I want to be able to set up a camp in the woods. Cook some meat and listen to the nocturnal creatures come out while the sky slowly gets darker and darker. I am in AWE how the morning looks and sounds however. R* REALLY nailed that.  :)

One of the things I looked forward was exactly this, to see the gradual change from day to night, just chilling out in the wilderness and watching the sun slowly set and the evening grow darker bit by bit. Hopefully they patch it, as it is now its gorgeous but just like you say way too short.

Newbie here. The fast day/night cycle is the only thing, the only thing, that upsets me about the game. Everything else about this game is wonderful beyond words...

Ideally the day/night cycle needs to be slower when you want it to be slow, like watching a sunset, and faster when you need it to be fast, such as conveying the sense of distance when travelling from town to town.

In the future, say five or ten years from now, this will be possible in games. Open-world games will change game time dynamically in play, so that game time passes slowly when the protagonist is moving slowly or not at all, and it will pass quickly when the protagonist is moving quickly.

I actually think it already is possible, just isnt implemented yet. But yeah. I think they must fix the sunsets now in a patch, because they arent enjoyable. The game feels very rushed as it is now, too rushed for its immersive world. Even if they keep 48 minutes day length, they need to fix the sunsets and jarring lighting bugs. So many people now have had that lighting bug where it just switches to another lighting like a flickering of a lamp switch. They could easily patch them, and while they are at it they should add an option to slow down time in the menu.

Like you said, its the only thing that really upsets about the game, because its so out of place in a immersive western experience to make time go so fast. Consider writing them on the links I provided in the topic, the more that do the better!

So, any chance this could be fixed? I put the game on hold hoping for a patch to fix this immersion breaker and i’m back to ACOd. Wow, the 10min long sunsets, want that in RDR2.

It really seems like the lighting isn't transitioning the way it's supposed to sometimes. Instead it's as though someone flipped a light switch

Yeah I have noticed this too. Especially at dusk or dawn, its like there is a little jump in the lighting from dark to bright or vice versa. I have a hard time they intended it to be this jarring, its even more gradual in GTA San Andreas lol.

Yeah it’s way to fast it should be three to even 6 hours easily for an entire in game 24 hours. I mean we have the ability to sleep to advance time to when we want. Or if you want different weather just rest up somewhere for a couple hours. Right now it’s rediculous, go in to customize a few weapons and I’m there for a day and a half like what?

Rockstar should give us a option to link the ingame time with the system time.. So if you play at night.. the game is in night....

I just read this on gamefaqs, seems to make sense, in an overly complicated way

Quote

Someone on Reddit tested and timed the day/night cycle. It turns out in game time slows down after midnight and speeds up after noon. Noon is the longest in game hour, and midnight is the shortest in game hour:

In Game Time/In Real Time
- 12am-1am = 1m 05s
- 1am-2am = 1m 16s
- 2am-3am =1m 23s
- 3am-4am =1m 29s
- 4am-5am = 1m 40s
- 5am-6am = 1m 52s
- 6am-7am = 2m 12s
- 7am-8am = 2m 29s
- 8am-9am = 2m 39s
- 9am-10am = 2m 40s
- 10am-11am = 2m 50s
- 11am-12pm = 2m 56s
- 12pm-1pm = 2m 57s
- 1pm-2pm = 2m 48s
- 2pm-3pm = 2m 35s
- 3pm-4pm = 2m 32s
- 4pm-5pm = 2m 29s
- 5pm-6pm = 2m 16s
- 6pm-7pm = 1m 58s
- 7pm-8pm = 1m 38s
- 8pm-9pm = 1m 30s
- 9pm-10pm = 1m 22s
- 10pm-11pm = 1m 17s
- 11pm-12am = 1m 06s
- Total Day = 49m06s

Meanwhile time moves ×2 slower while in camp.

Ah cool. Pretty good to know.  Guess that confirms days are longer. I just wish it were the same for every hour. Games like the crew 2 and i believe Far Cry 5 do the same sort of thing as RDR2 when it comes to time cycle.
